Well, after the last marching video I made, I got tons of requests to watch these two videos so here's another look at my firsthand reaction to these amazing performances! Thank you to everyone who suggested to watch SCV 2018 + BD 2017, I can't wait to watch more cams and full runs. As always, if you have anything you'd like to see on this segment, head to www.adamtanpercussion.com/submit :) Thanks for watching!

The show "Metamorph" is a show about how Blue Devils has grown and changed over the years, with tributes to past shows. Yeah, only the Blue Devils can do a show about the Blue Devils, the biggest flex.
There's usually like 4 to 5 movements in a show: The Opener, sometimes starts out with front ensemble only (sometimes its a "pre show" with choreography), the 2nd movement (aka the meat and potatoes), The Ballad (usually third), a short percussion feature (where you see the snares, tenors, basses get a solo), then a Closer that's Fast and Loud.

So a drum corps is a marching ensemble that has brass, percussion, and color guard. Color Guard consists of the people spinning rifles, flags, and sabers (swords). And Drum Corps is very brass heavy compared to other ensembles. A Drum Corps show in person is unlike any other. Basically, the season starts in late June and goes onto the beginning of August. And throughout the winter, spring, and summer these members that perform the shows practice all over the United States at high schools where they sleep on gym floors and wake up to perform on American football fields. They practice every day for months straight, every day is about 10 hours of practice with some breaks to eat. Shows normally have around 6 corps but could have up to 20 at regionals. These shows aren’t only in Indianapolis they are all over the country. Lucas Oil Stadium just holds the last three shows of the season where every Corps comes together to compete against one another. In 2017 the Blue Devils won with this show and after winning the finals, the corps gets to perform one last time until next year which is the “Victory Run”. Every year the corps switches their shows and the members learn another 12 minute program in hopes to win and build relationships while doing it.

2017 was the 60th anniversary of the corps, and the show was meant to represent how they had evolved over the years as a group. The whole show is an extended metaphor, and was (literally) showing a metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a butterfly at the end of the show. That’s why flight of the bumblebee was included, and the color guard had wings towards the end. Also, the “concord, blue devils” line at the end was (I think) the voice of an announcer from the first DCI finals that BD participated in, or at least something similar to that. I’m glad you enjoyed this show, it’s personally one of my favorites

    • @samsignorelli
      @samsignorelli 2 года назад

The voice at the beginning and end was BD director Jerry Seawright at their very first competitive run as a drum & bugle corps in 1971..2 years before they ever left California on tour. Nice to see Jerry get a ring as a performing member (after he passed in 2004). The wings are also from the early 80s....we used them in the 84 show.

Adam in the show there’s different movements I bet you already know this but just to make sure the first movement (at the beginning) is the opener where they introduce their show and show the momentum. The second movement is the Ballard where you said it had a good melody or it sounded calm that’s the Ballard where it’s nice. And then finally the third movement where everything changes, you can’t really call it an ending but it’s an ending. It’s supposed to be powerful and strong and it’s supposed to be big and gives you goosebumps. And that’s the form of marching shows hope you needed this :)

This show is about the change of ideas over time. That’s why it’s called metamorph. Like how a caterpillar goes in to its cocoon and comes out a butterfly. A lot of the things they play come from their past performances. The Corp itself has been around for like 70 years. That’s the basic idea of the show.

I know everyone will suggest their favorite shows for you to watch but here’s an underrated yes amazing feature: Cavaliers 2019. Welcome to this community and I hope you continue to follow it! Catch me on the field :)

The crowd is going crazy in the first “triangle” set (actually a diamond) because the brass is so insanely loud your ears bleed. It is so hype being in the first few rows. I was in the 3rd row for dci San Antonio this year and after blue coats went I couldn’t hear anything!

Older concert percussionist here - great to see your fresh-eyed perspective on DCI stuff!
I’ve been gaga for Drum Corps ever since I was in high school at the tail end of the ‘70’s and early ‘80’s, and realize now that I’ve seen the whole latter-day artistic age of the activity form in front of my eyes, right from the years when it started to happen.
Mine was probably the first generation of fired-up teens to accept it eagerly as an art form, not just a pseudo-military pageant, and accept things like flowing movement and dance, sideline percussion ensemble, and advanced concert music repertoire.
Me and my band classmates devoured DCI World Championship LP’s like other teens rocked out on Kansas, Yes, and Procol Harem, oohing and aahing at the sophisticated sonic wonders of Santa Clara Vanguard, and the mindblowing roar of the Madison Scouts in their prime. We spent our school days trying to cajole our marching band director into more of a cool “drum corps” mentality, begging for drum carriers (trash the straps!) and new uniforms in the current cool drum corps style.
Only regret? My music school training at Indiana University crowded out all the summers I might have been able to spend playing with the now-legendary Star of Indiana corps, which was in its first couple of seasons right there near campus.
    What a trip, man. 😎

Hey Adam! I’m so happy you enjoy being exposed to the marching arts and drum corps, and it’s very encouraging that you are exploring other sections such as brass and color guard, as well as this different world of percussion. I’ve loved this activity for many years and have marched, and I would love to have a live chat with you to discuss some of the intricacies and backgrounds of corps style marching, and a little of how it’s evolved in the past decade, plus answer some of the questions you may have about it. Please let me know if this is something you’d be interested in, and in the meantime, I’m looking forward to all of your upcoming content!!

It's so much fun to watch you watch this and appreciate it.
These musicians and dancers are filling local theatres and orchestras annually.
For perspective, performing after you know you've won must be one of the most liberating feelings a professional could have.
It's all about showing off and style at that point, isn't it?
I won a state championship in the Indiana State University stadium. Whatever the hell it was called. "Biggest assemblage of aluminum bleachers in the state", or whatever.
Last year anyone won a state championship there.
    "We burned that fucker down!"

I recommend Bluecoats 2019, instead. I find both to be well done, but Blue Devils always have a similar flavor of movement and style each year, so I would love to see him react to something different. Not knocking BD, but there is a reason both corps fought all season for 1st in 2019.

Happy you opened with SCV! They've easily got the best percussion across the activity. Here's some background on the last piece you watched:
This was the 60th anniversary show of the Blue Devils organization, hence all the references to diamonds.
The recorded vocal at the beginning ("Ladies and gentlemen, the corps on the field" and the end "Concord Blue Devils" is a recording of the late Jerry Seawright (passed away in early 2004) -- director of the corps from it's inception until the end of the 1983 season -- announcing the corps at it's very first competition after adding bugles around 1970. They'd been a drum and bell corps prior to that.

Hello Adam! I loved this video of you reacting to drum corps. For more context of the Blue Devils 2017 Show, it was to celebrate their 60th “Diamond” Anniversary.
You might see their reference with “Shine bright like a diamond”
    and
    “Crystal” -Trumpet Section
And the show is called metamorph to show their change throughout all 60 years of Blue Devils. This is shown with the ballad section of “Everything must change.”

It’s so cool seeing other people from other regions finding out and enjoying DCI! Some other fun things to know:
All of the people in the corps are anywhere between 17-22! (There’s technically no minimum age enforcement, but due to how many hours of work they do and how competitive it is, usually the youngest are prodigy 16 year olds)
Being in a corps takes up all of your summer, beginning in late May all the way till Mid August (DCI Finals), with a few free days spread apart, but overall you won’t be able to return home until the end of finals.
Practice hours are very long, going well over 6+ hours almost everyday outside (even in the intense summer heat)
Most nights are spent sleeping on a high school gym floor, a bus, or sometimes college dorms.
    Group showers
Bus rides are very long and very common halfway through the season. Buses are used to transport from competition to competition. One night, there could be a show in Tennessee, and 2 days later, Atlanta Georgia. Most of your time will be spent on the bus
The average cost of participating in a corps could be anywhere between $2400-4500+
Despite all of this, many people still love preforming and others strive to be able to be able to preform. Personally, I would love to audition, but like many others, the $3000+ price tag prevents me. It’s great to see others enjoy dci
(I also recommend you watch Bluecoats 2016, 17, and 18, and Carolina Crown 2014 and 2018, great shows)
(Anyone else is welcome to correct me and/or add on!)

Dude the live sound from these corps would BLOW your mind. It’s insane. I’m a high school assistant band director for a very competitive marching band on the east coast. Every year we get to go to Annapolis Maryland to see a DCI show. The kids always loose their minds. It’s seriously AMAZING. We have had a few kids (including 2 staff members) go through the Cadets Corp. it’s really an amazing activity and performed on such a high level. Actually got to see this blue devils show live at that competition. It was 10+ minutes of goose bumps 😂

Fun fact Adam, Lucas oil stadium is partially designed for sound just for drum corps and that’s also why there’s a huge black curtain in the background (and the blue devils tag before the last note is from an audio recording of their very first dci performance in 1972!)

I recommend watching two cams from that show miles kenobies quad cam 2017 victory run (this way you can see what batterie is somewhat like) and And the lead trumpet cam for victory run 2017 (so you can see what it’s like to be a soloist in these shows) but definitely look at other shows too I just think these two videos would help you understand what it’s like marching as an individual and give you a glimpse into what their sections are like. Its also cool to hear the show from the marchers perspective because it’s a very different feel.

I marched in 1977 and Mr. Seawright was a friend, mentor and a really bad cook - his voice and pride (as a Marine) were unmistakeable...they don’t make ‘em like that anymore so he expected us to make ourselves...good leaders do that....

The concept of the Blue Devils - Metamorph show was a throwback to their beginnings .... progressing into todays style of movement and arranging. The voice samples (announcer) call back to their first ever performance in 1973. Many of the motif's in the intro are from some of their most famous productions over the years. The winged flags that are used are also a callback. If you know BD history, you'll enjoy this show even more. As you said, so much going on at all times and too much to reference here. At the same time, they get knocked for standing around a LOT!!! But they just keep winning.

  • @fausto8686

2017 was the blue devils 60th anniversary and their show is about how DCI has evolved as an activity and the direction it may head. You can see that in the shift from more traditional marching onto the field with the full uniform and shakos (hats) into the more modern more experimental uniforms/visuals/music. The ballad section where the brass all goes right in the front is called “everything must change” by Bernard Ighner and the show uses the concept of metamorphosis (hence the name metamorph) as a central theme.

You need to come out to the US in the fall during marching season especially if you were able to sit in with a practice session so that they explain all the terms and what they are used for. I think it would be more difficult to get to sit in on a DCI practice session. but you could go to the finals in august. next year. it really is an experience you would never forget. But it is way better to be on the field playing though.
