Vic Firth has some “learn the music” videos from dci shows that you can look at. It would be cool to see you try some out on your channel (marimba or snare).
Interesting fact about the high brass feature after the ethereal exhaust pipe feature... the entire hornline is playing on high brass instruments, including tubas. That was impressive on its own because to go from that low of a range to suddenly having to play an entirely different instrument opposite of what you usually play was astounding
At 10:04 you missed a snare drummer's drum falling off, which this is pretty cool because you can see one of the field judges pick it up and bring it back to him at around 10:32
As someone who marched this show and know how much controversy there was around it, it's really awesome to see someone who appreciates the complexity of this show design and orchestration.
Loved all the double and (I'm guessing) triple tonguing. How hard must that be to do while simulatnously marching quick step, sideways and backwards, etd.? Carolina Crown is just plain amazing.
One thing you might not know from the first clip is during the show after the metallic percussion feature all of the brass is on either trumpets or mellophones so the tubas and baritones had to learn trumpet or mellophone for that feature. Pretty amazing that they were able to put that together.
fun fact: Carolina Crown loves B♭Major/g minor scales. For example, Inferno(2015), E=mc²(2013), Out of this world(2014), Relentless (2016), It Is (2017). all in those keys for the good majority.
@@Treble_V2 while i do agree, i think the fact that their music is in Bb allows them to play more challenging licks. which results in Crowns massive Brass Flex.
@@Treble_V2 They tune in Just temperament on Bb, which is perfect for these types of horns. Since they're super in tune on Bb harmonics, they sound louder when playing those chords. Definitely gets them Otts every year for a reason.
Arrangers have a thing. Listen to Bluecoats from the past 10 years. Since Metropolis, there's been musical development around a certain sound that came to a head in Tilt. Same with most of the world class corps. There's a set sound concept that comes through in every arrangement to highlight the features in their brass line they focus.
In this show, everyone in drumline plays snare for the opener. The other line is the original snare line and the one he is in is all bass and quad players. Very unique
Thanks for checking out Crown! I think this is one of the best all-around shows in terms of brass, percussion, guard, as well as visual. Really crazy to think that this show got 5th (one of the strongest years in DCI as of late). It also has my favorite moment ever starting at 8:28 when all of the hornline hops on either a trumpet or a mello and then just tears the roof down. Would totally recommend making it to a show in 2021! Crown in person is even better than Crown on video.
Also - good picking up the timpani on the field, but there's like 10-15 concert bass drums and gongs all around the field as well they they use at the end ;)
i play mellophone and they NEVER fail to impress me in this show and corps in general. you get so impressed w the smallest things that normally only a marching band kid would appreciate !
2014 crown was the show that my university horn professor first said, “ok. Every brass group sucks, but this group is the real deal.” I taught with a bunch of folks who marched in 2013/2014 at crown. Good folks. I’ll tell you though, marching on a field, you barely can hear the crowd cheering. You are just so gassed after every production. You just hear the final applause. Lol.
Honeslty, I still think they should've taken it. BD's brass was good, but Crown had the harder book and still managed to sound just as good as them. It doesn't really matter though. When hornlines are that good technically, it really comes down to who's tone you prefer.
If you watch crown 14 you have to see my age out - cavaliers 14 “immortal”. There’s a whole marimba moment that slayed the house down. I marched color guard at cavaliers but our percussion is 🔥 every year.
The brass feature in the middle of the show has all of the Brassline apart from mellophones playing trumpet. I have heard from members that the tuba players work relentlessly to get really good at trumpet.
The first vid carolina crown has to be the hardest like music book to hit DCI in my opinion. Like sure it was technically easy or un-complicated but that triple-tonguing and double tonguing at the end is HARD to get down. Now I haven’t really seen many shows but just what I think rn
you can go on musescore.com and look up music scores for whatever you want as long and someone’s uploaded it! almost every drum corps show for every instrument is on there
Oh yeah forgot to mention one of the thing so as you watch the colorguard every single member is able to spin the primary military pieces of equipment. Which is the foundation of marching band programs it is the flag which represents the groups colors well in today’s performances it helps at the mood. The saber which represents the fence and honor. Which most of the time our blunt at predominantly either white or silver metal but that doesn’t mean custom-made have been made to fit the show. And the last one is rifle which is kind of in balance so we have to rebalance it in order for spin properly as we do with all of our equipment and less kill which is a recent ad on is dance and the ability to separate the top and lower half so were the one moving to done at the same time.
29:46 If you want to get a little more of an idea of how the battery's music fits in the whole show, you should take a look at LearnTheBeats or VicFirthMarching videos. They have videos of the drumline playing with the sheet music of what they are playing. Lots of these videos are taken from In the Lot performances or also include the pit(with sheet music for them sometimes, as well). Very occasionally they have full shows, or you essentially have enough footage to get an idea of the whole show, which is super cool!
I believe the world renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie arranged the percussion feature for Crown that year for this show. Maybe someone out there can verify this.
I would like to point out that at 8:27 all of the tubas and baritones/euphoniums switch to trumpets for this section so that the entire hornline is playing high brass instruments
That section with the exhaust pipes is based on this Evelynn Glennie piece called Shadow Behind the Iron Sun. Check it out. ruclips.net/video/RviH0QQ2SNs/видео.html
I’m super late to seeing this, but for a little explanation. There is no rhyme or reason to the things people say during shows. As shown with the “presenting the Krabby Patty”, it can be some of the most random things. Other great examples are rue Nani na from 2015 bluecoats, also 2017 bluecoats contra head cam and euphonium head cam
Hi, Adam Tan! I know this that my question is horrifically unrelated to this video, but I wanted the best chance for you to see this. Recently my band director asked everyone in my front ensemble to work on a solo for school. Sadly the only marimba I have access to is a 4.0 octave marimba. My question for you (because I really wanted to work on one of your solos..) is whether or not any of your pieces could be played on a 4.0 octave so I know which one to purchase. I also want to say that your channel is a big reason I play marimba and I love the content! If you’re able to go out of your way to answer my question, that’d be lovely. But if not, that’s ok too. Thank you !
you should react to some of the best high school marching band so u can see the difference between the pros and high school i highly recommend bands from Texas.

Did you catch how the brass feature starting at 8:26 was on all trumpets and mellos - and the low brass switched to high brass horns for the feature?
Vic Firth has some “learn the music” videos from dci shows that you can look at. It would be cool to see you try some out on your channel (marimba or snare).
@@AnDream109 I'm going to do this next week :)))
When he paused for the timpani I thought he was going to point out the snare player who lost his drum
I remembered reading about that before watching it but didn't spot it until later 😅
Adam Tan ruclips.net/video/wYKkR04UUTY/видео.html
Just in class you wanted to see from the drummers POV
Ryan Hall he will never live it down
Yeah facts, it's probably not super noticeable for a first time watcher I guess

Yep here it is: ruclips.net/video/wYKkR04UUTY/видео.html
I saw the head am first, and then as soon as I saw this I knew it was this show
Adam at 12:11 "so romantic."
Me: oh you havent seen Crown 13' yet 😂
True that ballad made me a little misty eyed the first time i watched it.
Impossible you say?
As someone who marched this show and know how much controversy there was around it, it's really awesome to see someone who appreciates the complexity of this show design and orchestration.
There was controversy? I thought the show was cool
Loved all the double and (I'm guessing) triple tonguing. How hard must that be to do while simulatnously marching quick step, sideways and backwards, etd.? Carolina Crown is just plain amazing.
Ridiculous amounts of hard work and skill, respect 💪

rickydude133 but it works for them so why do anything different. Bb wins them Otts.

He missed the snare drummer dropping his snare in the CC show lmao.
This guy is my spirit animal.
i always get chills in every single carolina crown ballad.
I love these videos, it's so interesting to see the thoughts and perspectives of DCI from someone that is new to it :)
I’ve had so much work from school lately that it’s been hard to watch the videos but glad to be early again 😁

If that wasn’t the year of Felliniesque, Crown definitely would’ve gotten another Ott. Their brass book that year was insane.

My son was marching Crown, but "Immortal" was one of my favorite shows that year. That marimba feature blew my mind every time I saw it!
The brass feature in the middle of the show has all of the Brassline apart from mellophones playing trumpet. I have heard from members that the tuba players work relentlessly to get really good at trumpet.
I love the subtle not-so-subtle “The Planets” motifs
Adam, you're the only channel where I enjoy watching react videos. And yes, it's also because I love DCI.
Cool video!
THE DRUM FELL
those triple strokes at 25:55 were flammed so they were actually quadruple strokes
He missed the snare drum falling off and the field judge bringing it back to him lol
At 13:00 it's actually Jupiter from "The planets" by Gustav Holst
Ya
At 10:04 you can see the snare on the right end’s drum fall off and the field judge picks it up and returns it to him as he continues marching
I like how he knew they were exhaust pipes not by how they look but by how they sound when you play on them lol

Oh boi if it wasn’t for my internet being sh*t
2011 Carolina crown....😍 you gotta watch it. Gives a little love to us synth/piano players
You should consider watching open class! Gold, SCVC, Blue devils b, etc.
you need to watch, crown 2013, 2015
The closer of that CC show was from my favorite brass band piece of all time Vitae Aeternum...I highly recommend checking that out. It’s amazing
10:03 dudes snare just came off his carrier and the judge runs over to give it back to him
8:26 he doesn't even know how crazy this part is. If y'all don't know, all low brass switches to high brass. crazy
The yell that scared you at the beginning of the snare/tenor vid was "DO IT UP. DEVILS!"
He didn’t even notice that low brass switched to trumpet for the ballad
20:43 fun fact: the solo trumpet playing here is was one of my visual techs for the past two years!
Yo as a drummer we usually say dumb stuff in time for the meme lol. It helps keep time but it's also for THE MEME.

It really makes you realize how much the drumline plays in the background that you NEVER hear
I’m a simple person. I see Carolina crown, I click
same
I think the cross rhythms happen because it's in 3/8 or something similar. Either way if you count in triplets it fits in easier
