Just submitted another DCI show for you, 1989 Phantom Regiment. DCI has been around since 1972 and has evolved a lot since then, so it's nice to go back and see some of the older shows; they just have a different feel to them. If you like story shows, watch Carolina Crown 2013. Classic love story, paired with the best hornline in modern DCI. Can't go wrong!
You start music in elementary like 4th grade. You learn a lot of music and different instruments in middle school 6th to 8th. When you hit 9th you join the marching band and start competing in field shows. I graduated high school doing marching band, we do concert orchestra symphony and jazz band when football season is over. These people continued in to college where as I go married and had kids. Now my kids learned music and I get to perfect their music. People spend their whole schooling to do this . Band is some of my favorite memories. Even doing field shows and parades in the hottttt summers heavy clothes mesmerizing music and counting steps to make these shows while keeping footing (left right left right). Very hard work, well worth every miserable moment. ❤
I love seeing outside reactions to DCI shows! While competitive circuits exist outside of the US, it's the most popular here. One important thing, videos do NOT do these guys justice. These Corps are LOUD. If you've ever been to like a really loud concert before, this is pretty much the same. Truly an incredible experience to have in person!
Once again thank you! As a former DCI marcher myself, I believe all of us thank you. The is a woman from New Zealand who does reaction DCI vids on RUclips too. She loves it too. It is drum corps - international. Great performances for the whole world to enjoy - not just USA and Canada. By the way there is another organization... Drum corps UK.🎉
Spartacus was -- according to legend -- a slave in the Roman er who led a revolt and was eventually executed for it. The "I am Spartacus" line comes from a film version of the legend where the Romans have the revolting slaves surrounded and offer to go easy on them if they surrender Spartacus, their leader. Spartacus, played by Kirk Douglas, offers himself up to save the others, standing and stating "I am Spartacus." Then others slaves start repeating it, making it impossible for the Romans to be sure who's the REAL Spartacus. In the Regiment show, "I am Spartacus" was originally repeated only by members of the corps -- mostly the color guard -- but eventually the AUDIENCE started saying it...resulting in a legendary moment of audience-participation
Fun Fact: The lady who plays Spartacus' love interest got a concussion from landing on her head at 10:26 and still continued the show. Truely Incredible.
Phantom had long been known as the best corps to never win the championship (they had tied for first in '96 and took second place on several occasions, most recently in 2006). And they had come in at second place in semifinals the night before. It was a huge, huge deal when they won the title. The murder of the emperor was a new ending to the show, added one week before the championship. Basically they made it clear that they were going to continue killing people until they won the title. Overall, Phantom is all about the carnage. This isn't the only show they've done that included an on-field murder, and I'm pretty sure their competitive placement in any given year is generally correlated with the number of deaths in the show.
I’m in a high school band and my director was in DCI and he is still obsessed with it. Because of this he told us a “fun” fact about this show(it’s not fun). At 10:27 when the guys throws her down she actually gets knocked out which is why it may seem like the color guard guy struggles to pick her up. He is basically carrying dead weight. When he brings her to the sideline it seems like he tells the judge and it seems like soon after he is calling someone through a possible mic he has. I think he also goes over there to check on here again. Idk if that’s what was happening with the judge but all I know is that she got knocked out.
Great Reaction. I will never forgot the first time hearing this show via CD. I only got to Blue Devils that summer who I thought they were going to win it all but after listening to the CD with my mouth dropped I understood. Well deserved championship win.
and as amazing as the music was that year, it was Koji Mori (good Roman) and Will Pitts (Bad leader/conductor) who pushed it over the top with that brilliant final execution (hah!) of the spearing.
there's a wonderful video by Grant Miller called "What is DCI?", and i'd highly suggest watching it if you want to hear an insider's perspective of the activity. it'll allow you to see the performances themselves in a different light. fantastic video, and hoping to see more of these! :) SUTA
I love seeing new people get interested in the activity! Every year world championships are hosted in Indianapolis, Indiana on the second weekend in August. If you wanted an experience seeing these guys in person, that would be the time. I'd recommend watching Carolina Crown 2013, that's the greatest hornline in dci history.
Matthew, I'm from the HQ city of the Phantom Regiment--Rockford, IL. If you don't understand the story here, you ought to watch the Kirk Douglas movie version which was released in 1960. Without knowing the story, you won't understand much of the theatrics. One thing I wish you'd done is given the performance a little more volume for us. In addition to all of this that we're seeing, there's what's called the pit, where the xylophones, etc. are playing. These kids travel overnight to the next performance, then spend the day out in the sun practicing, then put on a show that night, then repeat the process all summer long, and when they turn 21, they're too old to continue. You'd like to see this live? It's held in mid-Aug. each summer in Indianapolis. A very short synopsis of the story is that Spartacus was a slave during the Roman Empire days around 200BC, and eventually led a slave revolt which ultimately failed. The Roman commander said he would let the thousands of men in the slave army live if they'd just give up Spartacus, but they couldn't do it, so when he admitted he was Spartacus, the entire slave army drowned him out with "I'm Spartacus", and every last one was crucified along the Appian Way.
Fun fact about this show: when the guard girl got thrown to the ground, she wasnt acting when she was unconscious. The guy threw down so hard she hit her head and blacked out.
I march a slightly lower ranking corps called the academy. This year we did "sol et Luna: until our next eclipse" which was awesome. Easily our most iconic show though, was 2016 "drum Corpse bride" it'd be awesome to see you react to either of those two
To give you context on how much they practice. Between the months of June and august, these performers meet and rehearse basically every single day for 10-15 hours a day. For 2 straight months
He's very new to viewing, and honestly how is he supposed to know anyway? Marching varieties often have alternate names as you know. Hell, most people probably don't even know what the heck a concert baritone is.
nah.. TROOPERS 2022 for something REALLY over the top and relatively unique. And actually in the proper miltary respect tradition of DCI - I loved the fun of Waking The Dragon, but both it, and this acid-trip Garden of Love belong in BOA, and NOT on a Drum Corps field. Brilliant shows, wrong activity.
Matthew, I was just over at the Santa Clara Vanguard show you watched about a year ago, but gave up when I fast forwarded, and found that the volume never got high enough for us to hear the show. Sadly, it still hasn't improved. Bye!

I agree 100%. There’s nothing that compares to seeing these groups live! You literally feel the vibrations in your bones
Especially the Carolina Crown crown. They are a solid wall of sound you can feel in your chest
Fun fact. They added the kill at the end the last week of the season. And finals was the only competition that Phantom won this season.
Koji slayed lol
That’s not quite true. They won shows in Birmingham and Alabama that year.
They won the Allentown show that year.
Lol the dude who kills the other drum major is named Koji Morey and he’s a teacher at my school. Pretty cool for a big DCI fan
Koji Mori** important to get his name correct.

I was there on the 50 yrd line, row 30. Greatest night of drum corps in my 30+ years in the activity.

Yeah, my band director was telling me about her because he was in this show, she got back up and went with the show
She wasn't acting when he carried her off. Apparently IIRC according to her she was unconscious.
I was here this year from the UK. There was something in the air that night!
“Don’t let those trombones get you down” was the most adorable sentence had me giggling 😂
the girl that died in the ballad actually got a concussion from that fall btw
would you take a concussion for a gold medal? I think I would but I've never had one before
🤓
@@DiLLuTed-_-5333 what is your problem
She did an interview years later and said she was fine, she was prepared for the fall due to activities she did years prior.
She said she didn’t have one I thought.

Love the DCI content, keep it up!!
Love to see people getting into DCI. Please keep it coming!
They're sweaty because this championship DCI contest is held in August...summer time here.

You haven't lived until you've seen these top corps live...the sound will knock you off your feet.

My high school competition marching back did Spartacus in 2010

It was fun listening to your reactions, because this was one of the most intense drum corps shows ever.
My band director was in this show
The genuine concern on his face is sending me! LOLOL
Fun fact about this show: when the guard girl got thrown to the ground, she wasnt acting when she was unconscious. The guy threw down so hard she hit her head and blacked out.

i recommend watching hebron high school 2022
My good friend and local band director marched contra tuba in this show.
This is one good chicken gyro recipe
DCI is awesome.

Definitely Madison 1995
Their entire summer is drum corps. They are either traveling, practicing or performing
Feel sorry the DM had to lay dead for the end .. he must have been bursting inside
Fun fact, the girl actually got knocked unconscious when she hit the ground.
Definitely react to Blue Devils 2014 while you’re reacting to all of these great DCI shows!
"Who is Spartacus"? OMG that was funny...
This corps won by .025 of a point.
If you wanna see a crazy game ending watch bears vs eagles 2018 wildcard final minutes
what the actual fuck does a football game have to do with this? Get that shiz out of here!
I'm a very triggered Baritone player at 11:46 and ya'll know why 😤
He’s called’em “trombones” on at least two vids now … 😤😆
He's very new to viewing, and honestly how is he supposed to know anyway? Marching varieties often have alternate names as you know. Hell, most people probably don't even know what the heck a concert baritone is.
at least he didnt call them Euphoniums or Flugelhorns. Noobies to Brass intstruments can easily get those three blurred together.
The 1990 Star of Indiana. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Or 91 just for the Cross to Cross....Zingali's magnum opus.
bluecoats 2014
They don't use trombones in DCI lol
Well now they do. They have used them since like 2015 or 16
Bluecoats 2022
I’m not sure this is a good show for the novice
nah.. TROOPERS 2022 for something REALLY over the top and relatively unique. And actually in the proper miltary respect tradition of DCI -
I loved the fun of Waking The Dragon, but both it, and this acid-trip Garden of Love belong in BOA, and NOT on a Drum Corps field. Brilliant shows, wrong activity.
Also, those are baritones, not trombones.
Euphs bro. Don't do us euphs dirty like that
@G3-7162 My bad bro, I'm bout that pit life, you all look the same to me. 😆
Matthew, I was just over at the Santa Clara Vanguard show you watched about a year ago, but gave up when I fast forwarded, and found that the volume never got high enough for us to hear the show. Sadly, it still hasn't improved. Bye!
“Certainly top 5” certainly not certain to be top 5…. Casual take
