Kurtis Blow ~ Christmas Rappin' 1979 Funky Purrfection Version

- This was the first single that Kurtis Blow released near the end of 1979, just before he recorded his debut LP for Mercury Records that included his breakout hit, "The Breaks" and rapped his way into hip hop history. Kurt Walker was born on August 9, 1959 in Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, NY. At the age of 19, he recorded this ode to the season of Santa Claus cleverly updating the story by rappin' to a funky disco beat. The one off single got him signed to Mercury to record a full album. "Christmas Rappin'" sold half a million copies and made recording history as the first rapper to be signed by a major label. His music has been sampled by many, and "Christmas Rappin'" was no exception, the R&B group Next used a clip from it for their 1998 blockbuster hit "Too Close" which spent five weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, and three weeks at the top of the R&B charts. Blow went on to release ten LPs over the next eleven years and experienced a revival for his song "If I Ruled The World" that was include on the 1985 "Krush Groove" soundtrack which was entirely composed of rap music. Then he lent his talent to the Artists Against Apartheid album that included the fiery "Sun City" a plea for social change. Blow has kept active and in touch with his audience and toured the world even playing for US armed forces overseas. He suffered a heart attack wile arguing with his son near a Woodland Hills, CA bus stop on October 29, 2016. The LAPD received a call about a robbery and when responding, found instead that Blow was suffering a heart attack and he collapsed. Kurtis stated “The police saved my life, a Black man. In this day and age, people need to hear that,” the “The Breaks” rapper said in a statement. “They got there so fast. If they got there any later, I would have died. I want to thank the officers from the bottom of my heart, no pun intended.” He is currently on the mend, and hopefully will be creating more music in the future... his son is following in his footsteps.
I remember this classic from Kurtis many years ago in North Texas. This one song was a cacophony of elegant brilliant sounds that exclusively challenged, traditional Xmas parody or genres The deeply humorous song in the beginning was focused, and the poetry presented here as a form of "Rap" that demonstrated the brilliance from Kurtis. This artist touched a side of inner city youth (and many types of people) who became excited as a result of this song and who never listened to a traditional Xmas song in this fashion. Happy (belated) Xmas, to all !!!
This is still a very good song ever since it came out over 45 years ago. The more I hear it the better it is keep playing it.
bassline kicking like bruce lee!
The greatest rap Christmas of all time....
To the best of my knowledge, anyone and everyone who bit from The Chic Sound not only had a hit record, they usually had a damn good one. This is one of them!
thanks Kurt this song will have life to remember good celebration in hip - hop music you are a musical trooper of inventions and style
This song is the OFFICIAL start of the Christmas season in my neighbor"HOOD". LOVE THIS!!!
It was 1979, I was 15, and I was in the city centre of Nottingham, England, I lived about 5 miles away, it was snowing and cold. I went into Woolworths, we had Woolworths back then in the UK, and I saw Kurtis Blows album for sale at £4.99. I had exactly £5.00 on me. I bought the album without hesitation and then realised I had no bus fare to get home, so I walked the 5 miles in the snow, most of it uphill too, I'm 58 now and remember that walk like it was yesterday, but I never regretted buying that album back then and still don't to this day!

he shown good creativity is not limited to where you from and he pushed the boundaries of hip-hop to expose its great artistry & enjoyment
First rap song I actually like
Santa I need a little more funk in my stocking this year!
For people who are tired of the usual songs.
The R&B group Next interpolated a piece of this at the beginning of their song "Too Close," earning the "Christmas Rappin'" writers (Kurtis Blow and J.B. Moore) credits on the track. This turned out to be very lucrative, as "Too Close" became a huge hit in 1998, going to #1 in the US for five weeks.
@I STAN Kim Jong-Un but Can't STAND Trump Actually, I like both of them but I am sure Kurtis Blow and his songwriting partner are very thankful to Next, as are all who fell in love with "Too Close" and their other jams!
Timeless !!!!
Another one bites the dust bassline or chic's Good Times...can't stand rap in any form but the music and rhythm of the track is catchy.
Bob F. sorry.

Oh snap I ain't heard this in ages and we talking 1979 if I can remember. I was lookin for the long version because whenever they played it on the radio, it was like 3 minutes long and I remember hearing it when I was like 10 yrs old when the long version played. Looked all over until now. The only problem is... hopefully I don't go to work having this stuck in my head and people getting ready for the new year
"and the grown ups got some present too a new TV and a stere-U"..... LoL. That always cracks me up.

CLASSIC !!!!
O album "the Breaks" foi um divisor de águas na história do rap. Blow conseguiu romper as barreiras do harlem e ganhou notoriedade mundial através desse disco, que tem como característica marcante os arranjos extremamente bem elaborados com a mais pura batida funk music.

HELL YEAH !!!!!!!!!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
So, who's original rift was it? CB, Queen or Pink Floyds? Back then it was excepted and respected, not selfish.
Chic came up with the funky bassline recording "Good Times" which was released on June 16, 1976. "Another One Bites The Dust" came out August 16, 1980 over a year later. I don't have an exact date for Kurtis Blow, but the copyright was done in 1979 and I remember hearing it during the 1979 holiday season. The Chic guys remember that bassist John Deacon was hanging around the studio when they were recording Risqué, as he wanted to learn their techniques. Then Deacon took the Good Times bassline and morphed it into the bass line we all know and love of "Another One Bites The Dust". Kurtis seemed to have also channeled Chic here, so I'm thinking he came up with his own riff resembles Queen's, but Christmas Rappin' was already on the charts when "Another One" was released.
@@DJDiscoCat Wow, great insightful and unpretentious answer. Knew parts of it. Where's you get that information from?
