Bee Gees ~ Stayin' Alive 1977 Disco Purrfection Version

- Robert Stigwood was looking around for an idea for a disco oriented movie when he read a story in the June 7, 1976 issue of New York Magazine, entitled "Tribal Rites Of The New Saturday Night" written by Nik Cohn. During preproduction on the movie he remembered a song he had heard The Bee Gees sing a few years earlier entitled "Saturday Night, Saturday Night" and put in a call to them to contribute music for the movie project. He asked them for an eight minute version of that song to release to radio that "would have a nice dance tempo, a romantic interlude and all hell breaking loose in the end". When Barry presented the song to him, it was now called "Stayin' Alive" and did not have the romantic interlude, the two things his employer had asked for. Barry reasoned that "Saturday Night, Saturday Night" as the song title was already approaching over saturation, so "Stayin' Alive" would really stand out and that a break in the songs tempo would kill the momentum and stood firm. Artistic freedom reigned that day as Stigwood gave in to his better instincts and he was repaid in spades. The recordings were completed and "Stayin' Alive" was used in the electrifying theatre teaser for "Saturday Night Fever". That sent patrons rushing to the local record stores to get the double LP soundtrack, I know I asked for it for my birthday (January 1) and I still have that gift my brother bought me in my vinyl collection. "Stayin Alive" was then used for the opening credits with Travolta famously strutting his way into superstardom. The single spent four weeks at #1, then dropped to #2, then #6 as "Night Fever" was rising to #2. The following week "Fever" hit #1 and an amazing thing happened, the #6 "Stayin Alive" reclaimed the #2 spot and stayed there for five weeks, giving the BeeGees a lock on the top 2 most popular songs of the rock era. The Beatles hold the record for having the top 5, count em FIVE songs in the country, #1 "Can't Buy Me Love" , #2 "Twist & Shout", #3 "She Loves You", #4 "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and #5 "Please Please Me". Suck on that Justin Bieber. PS Their music is being played fifty years later, and they are hell of lot nicer.

i'm Almost 19 and i hoenstly respect this song, probably one of the best 70's disco music i've ever listened to. My parents were probably like 10 or 12 when this came out and they loved Bee Gees growing up. This would be Great song for young people like me to listen to.

Disco never dies... it’s just Stayin’ Alive! 😊
#Stayin' Alive ❤️❤️🕺
I remember when they started bashing disco and breaking the albums and tapes, saying how bad it was, etc. Now, these are true classic that bring back a great feeling from a great time!
Needs more likes 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Even if it did, the BeeGees aint dying. They r in their own lane.
Sho'nuff that's right disco never dies
When I was 14 years old in the 9th grade back in 1998, in my drama/theater class at school, the teacher gave us an assignment/project where we would pick a song and lip sync to it in front of the class. I had always loved Stayin' Alive, so I decided that this was the song I was going to do my lip sync to. I got my mom to take me to a vintage clothing store and I bought an awesome 70's disco outfit to wear for my lip sync...white bell bottom pants, platform shoes, and a brown yellow and orange disco shirt with a big wide pointed collar...When the day came and it was my turn to perform, I walked into the room in my disco outfit and started lip syncing and dancing to Staying Alive. The whole class went crazy...everyone loved it (well, most people did) and my performance was voted the class favorite...needless to say I got an A for the assignment, lol. I was so nervous about doing it, because I had always been really shy and quiet at school, but after it was over I was so glad that I decided to go through with it. I will remember it for the rest of my life. 😁
***Update*** The teacher actually did have a student who filmed each performance, so there probably is a video of it somewhere, so I'm working on trying to figure out where it could or who might have it. I have contacted several people that were in that class with me to see if they might have any idea who might have it. So far I haven't had any luck. I'm pretty sure the teacher probably had the original video tape, but unfortunately she passed away several years ago.
And yes, I have posted this comment before on this and other videos of Stayin' Alive, I just enjoy sharing my story with the people who may not have seen the original comment.
Cool memories! 💖🕺💃
Good luck on your search!
Love reading about everyone’s memories to songs
No lie!!! This is THE BEST COMMENT on here!!!!!
I'll help you search, where did you to school?
If all the BEE GEES were still alive and performing, they would still pack them in by the 10's of thousands 50 years after their prime. WE ALL MISS YOU !!!
When I hear this version of the song, I don't just hear the song. I can hear the entire 70's. It's almost as if I can reach out and touch them.
I am 83 years old and still love to listen to the Bee Gees
This version makes you appreciate even more just how good this song really is
I totally agree with you 💯
I completely agree with this statement (no matter how long ago it was posted). It also makes you appreciate the music we had back in the day and just how Legendary this group was/is. Thank You again @DJDiscoCat for another awesome body of work ;-)

One of the greatest songs in the history of music 🎶
Very good
Obviously there’s loads of reasons for the whole 3 minute limitation, but I wonder what artists would have really done if they had no such limits. There would have been so many masterpieces like this
Well, the 12" is a thing. If they wanted, they usually could (and did) create longer versions, so it's likely that Bee Gees just didn't want to make one.
Disco was mostly underground, not mainstream, until the film _Saturday Night Fever_ exploded it and the Bee Gees into pop culture. It happened even faster than Michael Jackson's _Thriller." Just BOOM, Disco madness. Oh, what a great time it was.
The 80s: _Lived 'em. Loved 'em. Miss 'em._
Disco was def mainstream music, wasn't underground and was around long before Saturday Night Fever which came out in 1977 not the 80's lol
Agreed ! BOOM & there was dancing madness happening, then...
@@Strode78
Disco started underground, then became mainstream after "Saturday Night Fever" hit practically every movie theater on the planet.

This has got to be the best version of the best disco song of all time!
I love this song from the Bee Gees. RIP Andy, Robin and Maurice.
Dang how time fly by so fast. I was 16 years old when this song was played in AM top 40 radio back in 1977.👍❤💖

Мне было 7 лет, но я отлично помню эту песню. Играла в Советском Союзе у каждого человека. Мы любили вашу музыку. Слушали свободно!!!
WOW, I WAS YOUNGER THAN YOU I WAS 14 IN 1977 I PLAYED THIS SONG OVER AND OVER AND THEN I MET BARRY WALKING WITH ROBIN & MAURICE UP TO ME AND BARRY SAID HELLO AND HE GAVE ME A KISS 1. Love stories aren't just found in movies, they actually happen in real life! Barry and I met back in 1977 and we've been in love ever since.
2. People say that love at first sight isn't real, but I beg to differ. When Barry met me, it was instant love!
3. I found my soulmate when I was only 14 years old. Barry came into my life and swept me off my feet.
4. true love never fades, and I can proudly say it hasn't. Barry and I fell in love back in 1977 and we're still going strong!
5. Some people take years to find true love, but I found mine when I was just a teenager. Barry and I met and fell in love, and we've been inseparable ever since.

This is a great version. It's almost a different song at the beginning. Awesome to hear how many layers of instruments are forming this great song.
The orchestra of strings are insane
IDGAF what anyone says or who tries to hate on this track - I will never deny my love for this tune lol
Foot tapping disco dance music with the aid of a full orchestra. Do we ever hear that today? NO!
The 1970's and 80's were THE decades of good music.
Exactly what I tell people. It's an Orchestra..!
This is the national anthem of the people who are still alive.
This is your national anthem.
Oh yessss
Especially in the COVID-19 lockdown situation. Helps a lots during the pandemic situation
I'm only 15 years old, but.. it's this generation that bothers my ears.. STAYIN' ALIVE
Being almost 22 years old, I like to imagine myself when this song was popular. Like I'm actually in 1977 in a club and the DJ plays this song, and the energy and the vibe of everybody out on a dance floor just enjoying life. I think about that a lot, is that weird? I'm sure some of y'all on here could tell me some stories
I'm 22 years old too and i feel you absolutely but unfortunately i don't have story's to tell I would also have liked to live this moment and share it with someone, being not of this generation I regret that I could not taste these moments
Well, I was 8 in 1978 (the song was released in December and so it was a signature song of New Year parties that year). The whole of 1978 was about the Bee Gees, by last week April 1978 4 of the US Top 10 songs were Bee Gees.
The discos worldwide could not cope up with the demand and many DJs played the SNF double LP 5 times in a night. My uncles and aunts (in their 20s) spoke of their experiences at that time. Everything was driven by John Travolta, his elevator shoes, his printed shirts with large collars and his incredible dancing skills. It was a wafer thin plot, held together with the great songs of the time.
I’m 62. I was 16 when this dropped. EVERYBODY hit the dance floor when the DJ played this track. Got my 1st grind from an older woman on this track. The age limit was 18, but I was with my brother and his crew and nobody checked my ID!
If you saw the movie, we were dressed EXACTLY like you would picture being in a dance club in 1977 Bell bottom continental pants, platform shoes that made me 6’4 instead of 6’…drinking Brass Monkey and sloe gin. Good times!
There is no age for music you can be as old as God will let you live and you still be jamming to some 70s I'm happy for you I'm happy for you that you still like to listen to music that is so wonderful❤❤❤❤😊😊
I'm speechless at how good this remix is. Simply purrfection.

This is the most adorable comments section because a lot of younger people are making tons of disco house edits in the scene nowadays and I see a lot of older people here commenting on how refreshing these tracks are and how much they bring them back.
Star Wars, Muppet Show, SNL, Bee Gees us kids had quite a time taking it all at once. We forever thank our lucky stars we ran around the house excited about staying young and feeling alive in the 1970's.

If ur of a certain age and mindset, THIS song is UR national anthem. No explanation needed.
I stopped doing this in 2000, but I once picked a song that best represented and defined each of the first five decades of the rock era. Took me about five seconds to pick Staying Alive for the 70's.
I'll accept that! 😍

@@sarahwalker377 Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen. Starting with the Iran hostage crisis and the U.S. hockey team's 1980 gold medal, there was an increased sense of nationalism and national pride in the U.S. and this song was used as a rallying cry throughout the decade.
The irony, of course, is that wasn't what the song was about. It was about a soldier returning from Vietnam and experiencing desperate circumstances. But Springsteen himself said he was okay with the song being used as a rallying cry. Helped him sell lots of records!
These guy's are musical geniuses. PERIOD
The golden years of disco music, I was thirteen with long blond hair and with a white shirt on cream-colored pants with wide legs. Man those were times, recently had me made the same clothes again in preparation for the reopening of my club after the covid-19 pandemic with a full disco evening and disco costumes required.
The acoustic guitar during the intro makes this sound like something from a spaghetti western. Then the bass groove kicks in and all bets are off!
