Thanks for the video!! I’ve been waiting for this one.
you are quite welcome
I was born with a cataract in my left eye, but for my whole life (47 years), my right eye has compensated for the impairment to such a degree that I drive a Class C better than most. My spacial awareness is very keen. I was dismayed to learn that I needed to pass an eye exam in both eyes to get a CDL, but watching this video has given me new hope. I have an appointment with an optometrist at the end of the month to consult about removing the cataract, but I hope I can just leave it in and pass the newly revised test to get my CDL.
good luck!
how did it go ?
My left eye can't see clearly. My right eye can see very clearly. Do you know if I can get a truck license?
Thank you very much. You have helped me more than I could imagine.
Glad I could help!
Thank you, Dr. Do to this new standard, I was able to clear a physical and get on the road and do to the information you made available, as you did, which has limited availability with this topic on the Internet. I had clear knowledge of the steps and process I had to take, simplified. Thank you for showing concern and consideration to your dot physical patients and potential patients. We appreciate Medical professionals, like you.
This is great to hear! You are very welcome 😁

@@EasyDOTPhysicals Does this apply for Florida residents? Can I take this form to America’s Best here in Florida? I failed the DOT vision test today, because my vision was 20/100 in my right eye and 20/40 in my left eye, with horizontal vision being 90 degrees in both eyes, what are my options?

Broo do you have vision in just one eye?
Good job
one of your eyes must be 20/40 or better
Thank you so much
Thank you very much. As a ME, if you need answers for this you should come here since the FMCSA and vision departments cannot answer these questions.

You are welcome. Good luck!
@Easy DOT Physicals I have 20/20 right eye w glasses
I have 20/50 left eye with glasses!
can I still pass dot physical cdl class A interstate
This was a great video!!!
My vision in my left eye has been getting more blurred with slow slow slow passing of time. However, over the past 2 to 3 months, the blurryness has quickly increased. I drive OTR and my right eye has been able to adapt tremendously fast.
I can see out of my left eye, and distinguish nearly everything I see, even tho it is severely blurred. I just can't read text out of the left eye, unless I know what the subject is about, then I can just piece 2 and 2 together and muddle through it.
But my right eye can see eye can see everything. Obviously I have something going on, and the rapid deteriation of the left eye might be a concern, and definitely is for me ... but my dominant eye has adjusted quickly.
I wonder if this would still be a disqualifying scenario?
I have mono vision after Lasik one eye see's far other see's close using both I can see perfect
🙏 I hope I pass
Thank you for this information. With the current standard, if a driver has 20/40 in one eye and 20/50 in the other but a combined of 20/40 are they able to pass?
They would be required to go through the alternative vision standard
They're finally coming around to see how important drivers really are
This update has been a long time coming

Dr.Nuesse I have a question i have been held back too get my CDL because of my vision. I had a accident that damaged the vision of one my eyes. I have 20/20 on my left eye & 20/70 in my right eye. Will I have any trouble getting my CDL License? I have a appointment with my Local DMV tomorrow or should I wait till the new form is released sir? & thank you posting video been waiting on this for ever.
Thanks for the question. You can not be medically qualified to drive commercially until the change goes into effect. Once this date happens you would need to follow the steps in the video exactly.
@@EasyDOTPhysicals Thank you Doc!
Do you know anywhere I can do vision test without many composes?
is the FMCSA rules you speak of only in your state or is it a nation wide agency with same rules in every state ¿
TY
This changed the game for me, I had a traumatic eye injury in 9th grade. I had cataract surgery and have a bifocal implant (this was when they were brand new) however it’s near impossible to get it to 20 40. Is this an one of the automatic disqualifications. I have had some cells lasered off before and my vision got a little clearer kind of like wiping a slightly dirty windshield.
How did it work out?
Thank you Dr. Nuesse. Now, I just scheduled my DOT physical for May 12th. Should I see an Ophthalmologist BEFORE that appointment?; And would the DOT give me the necessary form?
Print the form from the link in the description of the video and take it to an opthamologist BEFORE your DOT physical
How did it go?
Can’t find the form in the DMV website can you help ?
With dot physical is a testicular exam or pantsing required in anyway?
Our providers are having a hard time confirming what to do if an examinee comes in for his/her DOT physical, and their failure to meet the standard of 20/40 visual acuity in both eyes is not discovered until after the physical has been started. Are they allowed to place the examinee on Determination Pending while he/she gets the form completed, or must they disqualify them, and have them perform a new physical, once they have obtained the required documentation? Your assistance is appreciated!
I will be failing drivers in this situation. Hopefully the FMCSA will give clarity on this in the future.
I got my Medical card last month I just left orientation to be a school bus driver they want me to do a physical by their doctor I'm a little nervous because this doctor might fail me even though I already have my medical card 🤷🏿♂️
This is wonderful, but the State of Ohio requires a driver with a CDL to have 20/40 vision in each eye, with or without correction. Do you know if this change with the FMCSA will have any impact on the state standard?
This rule applies to interstate commercial drivers. There is no guarantee that all states will adopt this standard.
How Will we know which states accept it?
When can we expect a video about breathing issues such as asthma and any other COPDs? I used to have asthma as a kid and it went away during my teens. I caught a case of pneumonia that brought it back in 2019 as an adult and have been working on it with a pulmonologist. Should i take a letter from my pulmonologist saying it would be safe for me to drive or would a letter from my PCP suffice? I am on corticosteroids to manage it and a rescue inhaler when needed. Will this disqualify me? Ive tried researching more on it but cant really find much on it.
The reason you won't be able to find much on the subject is that most of the time this is under the doctors discretion. Certainly bringing in as much information on the situation as you can should help.
My left eye can't see clearly. My right eye can see very clearly. Do you know if I can get a truck license?
Hello again,
I still have (with glasses) 20/200 in my left eye and 20/30 in my right eye, will have a problem still with passing, if I haven’t mentioned earlier I have Retinopathy of Prematurity.
Thank!
under the new standard you may pass just make sure you follow the process I described in the video
Does astigmatism affect the DOT physical in any way?
Say you have a bit high blood pressure and you also pass by alternative vision standards. Could those two close passes be put together as a fail? Or they will still be considered completely separate?
we would consider them separately but each provider can make their own determinations
Question if a company pays for your DOT and get fired do they keep the medical card or do I need to take another one
The medical card is issued to the driver. I have not heard of an instance where an employer would confiscate it.
I have a question concerning eyeglasses thank you for doing this video man I’ve been fighting this for a lot of years just as you’re describing with this form I’ve been doing that for a lot of years I go to my optometrist have them write a letter I take it back to my physical take the DMV in hopes they would accept it and give me my drivers license I Magine you can see the stress in knowing that you may not be able to do your chosen occupation I have a question my right eye is 2025 my left eye is 2070 they always tell me I have to wear glasses to drive but glasses really hinder me it is safer in my opinion to not wear glasses while driving commercial vehicle but they always stamp on my license must wear corrective lenses under this new process do I still have to wear glasses even though I don’t even pay any attention to my left eye my brain only looks through my right eye what do you think
Hi David and thanks for watching. If your vision can be corrected with glasses to fall withing the FMCSA typical standard then you will be required to use them and the new standard will not apply to you. If even when corrected your vision is not good enough to comply with the typical standard it will be up to the eye specialist to evaluate if you need your glasses for safe driving.
@@EasyDOTPhysicals good info thank you
Sir, How soon do you think the different states will activate this change? Especially with COVID ?
I imagine states will still be able to set their own standards but they typically adopt federal guidelines
Just like the DOT exam the doctor has to be certified or on the Federal list. Is this alternative eye exam the same also ? Or any optometrist or ophthalmologist qualified?
any ophthalmologist will do
Do you get a restriction out on your license? If only 20/40 in one eye
Does this mean we no longer have to apply for a vision waiver or send anything in to the federal motor carriers.... The letter is confusing and didn't say either way
Yes this will do away with the vision waiver
so after you get all this done what do you take to the DMV?
Check out this video for the answer ruclips.net/video/rG4IrhSKAww/видео.html
Hi how do we get the alternative vision form can we download from websites or do we have to pick up form at a cdl dmv?
you download it.
Is there anything in the works to get thc off the testing?
Not at this time
Hey will the people at the dmv also ask me to do the vision test on the machine there ?
yes
Now what is it going to take to get individual states to adopt this alternative standard.
Write to your governor. Worth a shot. That’s what I’m going to do here in FL
What if u was shot in the eye does this count can a employer deny u to return to work
Thank you I was heart broken today when my doctor said that molecular vision was going to disqualify me
just go through the process and you should be okay
What if my vision is 20/30
I have cataract in my right eye but I wear glasses.....Will this hold me back from getting my CDL during DOT physical ?
you would need to comply with the vision standard. I have two videos on this channel on vision.
How can I find optometrist or ophthalmologist to get the evaluation report?
You can Google search and print out the form then bring it to any optometrist or opthamologist
I have a question I was shot in my left eye 20yrs ago and its completely blind but with these new rules I could possibly get a C.D.L with good vision only in one eye ?
correct
Is there any sort of standard for below the knee amputees that would require anything further before being able to pass the dot physical
yes, you would need a skill performance evaluation
I can see 100% with my left eye , if a lack of vision only in my right eye , can i drive cdl truck over the road or only locally or i can not ?
The video answers this in detail
Hey doc! Does the dmv drug test you after you pass the written test ?
Or do I only get tested at my physical appointment?
There is a lot to explain about CDL drug testing. Please watch my videos on the subject for the most complete answer.

I have a question: what if you were suppose to go under the alternative vision standard according to a drs. Reports but some how the dot examiner determined you were ok and passed you under normal standards.. But then your next Dot it comes back up that you don't qualify? can you then switch to the alternative vision standard?
yes you can
Is this work for cdl aplicant or only for cdl holders???
Thank you

Does the fmsca actually require you to take a road test too?
I have a video on this rule
If I passed a at home drug test twice do you think I can or have a high chance to pass a DOT urine test?

i am one eye blind.. but other is almost to perfect vision. is that an automatic cdl physical fail? florida
You would follow the alternative vision standard for federal certification
I'm diabetic and I take metformin should I be worried and do I need paperwork showing i take meds for my diabetes
These things would be up to the discretion of the doctor doing the exam. My advice would be bring as much info as you can.
Hey so I take this to my eye doctor to get approved there and then take it to my Dot examination for a second approval
yes
@@EasyDOTPhysicals thanks for your help I would never known this if it wasn’t for your video !
Will this ever change? Because I’ll be driving package cars for ups in about 2 years and with the old rule I wouldn’t pass a dot physical because I have amplyobia in one eye
You good.
Dr. Nuesse, I have a concern. This is a federal law, but will all 50 states honor this? I'm worried people with monocular vision will have a hard time being insured by carriers, because individual states will not go by this federal law.
There can definitely be state variations although the states have typically adopted the FMCSA standards in the past.
So you still have to take the eye test at the dot physical also? Or just at the optometrist?
both
So I'm essentially blind in one eye due to an accident (not due to medical condition). I understand that it says less than 20/40 but the vision is bad enough in my left eye where I'm not sure it can even be measured. I've been driving issue free with one eye for 7 years, having pulled several trailers on a regular basis with no accidents and I'm very comfortable behind the wheel. I guess my question is, can I still get this exemption if I have basically no vision in one eye?
Yes you can still get the exemption
@EasyDOTPhysicals Update: I now have my class A license. Thanks for the video and info. Your channel is great. Helping people stay up to date and understand all this stuff.
Is it still like this in 2024?
Is this new vision test still as effect as in 2023 bec I just have one good left eye ? Is it all for all states ?
yes
I just got hit with this a few days ago during my DOT physical. Question Doc, would medical examiners perform an additional vision test AFTER drivers receive the green light from an optometrist/ophthalmologist???
I would need you to pass in one eye and have the form filled out by ophthalmologist. I allow before seeing the ophthalmologist or after. can’t say for certain what others require.
@@EasyDOTPhysicals That’s exactly how it happened with me. Right eye was 20/40, left 20/70, both eyes 20/50. Got an appt set up with an Ophthalmologist next week, wish me luck. As always, I truly appreciate your insight and content! I’ll definitely spread the word!

Hello Doc. I have a situation here. I took a DOT physical last month and I didn't pass the vision part of the DOT physical. The doctor said my vision is 20/50. I went to an optometrist and got new prescription and new glasses but my vision appears to be roughly the same. I have astigmatism in my left eye. I have a pocket Snellen eye chart. Do you think that is a good source to judge one's eyesight? I feel like my vision is somewhat impaired even with my new glasses. My vision is much better in my right eye and is impaired in my left eye. I reckon I may be able to get by with the new alternative vision standard. Any suggestions?
