    I really dig these machines. I bought two Z440 from an area business that was selling off some older gear. Both have E5- 2683 v4 CPUs, one with 32GB RAM and the other with 96GB, one with a Quadro K4200 and the other with a P400. Got them both for $200 combined. Simply fantastic home lab type machines.

    With most games I've found & I think it's been tested. That in most games, "ultra" settings are more often than not visually indistinguishable from the 2nd highest option but have a major performance impact. Most of it being related to lighting & shadows. So high settings & max texture detail is often the best bet for these older GPUs that stay usable because of their giant VRAM pool. This whole thing for only $350 is an absolute steal considering it probably cost over $5000 back when it was new.

    I have a pair of recycled Z420 machines that my son and I gamed on for the past 4 years. They are incredibly sturdy and reliable. Last Christmas we switched to the latest PCs but the Z420s are not e-waste. I loaded five hard drives and TrueNAS (which loves ECC memory) into one of them and they make awesome servers. Way cheaper and way more reliable than Synology. The parts issues you mentioned are not a problem because e-Bay is flooded with parts brokers and these machines have everything available for them at very cheap prices. These machines are so cheap that you can experiment with them and not risk a ton of money. Our second chassis is going to get modified so that it can take eight hard drives and I'll use a SAS controller for them. HP Z workstations are awesome.

    I had similar computer at work in around 2013. Definitively the case was almost the same. Two Xeon processors 6 cores / 12 threads each, 64 GB RAM, Quadro GPU. Working as C++ developer, the RAM was plenty (32 GB would be enough), but I could always use some more CPU power. Solid foot heater under the desk.

    Like for the Z620, there is a riser board available, to add a 2nd CPU with 4 DIMM slots.
    Also, Registered ECC can be considerably cheaper than unregistered (UDIMM) on the 2nd hand market, because it cannot be used in consumer machines. Some older workstations did lower the memory speed when more slots were populated, not sure if this is the case with the Z640 with "only" 4 slots.
    Also, these machines support bifurcation, which let's you split a x16 slot into 4 4x slots, meaning you can have some fun with cards like the Asus Hyper M.2 X16.

For the Z640, a cpu upgrade to E5-2667v4 gives you 8 cores with a max turbo of 3.6GHz or if you plan on staying with 1 cpu then the E5-1680v4 or E5-1660v4 are great choices. I have a few HP Z series workstations, really love the build and component quality. They are made for 24x7 operation. Will be curious to see how bigger chips fare, because they mostly only go down in clockrate potential from where you already are with a 1650v3, although L3$ does go up. Decent gaming is a nice bonus, but I think the primary value in these second-hand X99 systems is in budget workstation/homelab uses where tons of cores and RAM can be had for extremely cheap.

    Feels nice to get a Z440 and a PowerEdgeR530 from someone who didn't want them. It's hilarious because the heatsink for the second CPU on the Dell was more expensive than the second CPU. With 12c/24t, a GTX 1650 and 64GB of RAM, it's not much faster than my laptop with a 3rd gen mobile AMD APU 4c/8t and GTX 1650, at least running benchmarks on Windows 11 for fun. Really cool machines though.

    Having functional quad-channel can make quite a difference to application performance (depends on the task), but it would be fascinating to see the effect on gaming performance. Any chance you could fit an extra two 16MB DIMMs to provide quad-channel and run some comparative tests?
    With older consumer boards (X79/X99), having quad-channel can help offset the lower RAM clock vs. newer designs, but that presumes the presence of higher clocked i7s and suchlike rather than XEONs, so can a XEON system even take advantage of the additional quad-channel bandwidth where gaming is concerned? As always, it'll likely depend on the game, resolution, settings, etc., influenced also by the GPU used.
    Maybe one wouldn't see much difference with an M6000, and perhaps one would have to run more demanding games like Hogwarts and RE to see any tangible difference, though at that level one might be erring more toward a better GPU anyway. As always, there are so many variables to consider. Certainly, the larger VRAM of the M6000 is extending its longevity wrt being able to use better textures. RandomGamingInHD often talks about this, often maxing out textures when the VRAM is avaiable, while turning down other settings to raise the frame rate to an acceptable level.
    Still, an excellent deal for that spec. Reminds me of the dual-socket Dell T7500 system I built long ago.
    Btw, some multi-socket mbd listings on Aliexpress describe their channel configurations incorrectly. I convinced Kllisre way back to change the listing for one of their boards because it was described as 8-channel when the wiring was only quad. Buyer beware.

      It's interesting how these older systems get a lot of praise for having a good layout and design, but when GamersNexus looks at a pre-built Dell G-series desktop or Alienware, they just absolutely (and deservedly so) trash it in their review. They call out all the proprietary components and bad design "choices" like the "load-bearing CPU cooler mount" or the pseudo-ATX12VO power supply repurposed from a server. Do these older workstation systems get a pass even though they have proprietary components?

    • @MixerVM
      @MixerVM Год назад

      @@galland101 The quality of those nonstandard components plays a large role in the common opinions regarding them. The pdf manuals are already gone, but the drivers and BIOS files are still up... So anybody with a Z440/640/840 may want to archive those before they disappear too.
    HP tends to remove support files after machines get 10+ years old... Terrible policy.

    Just some food for thought - V4 X99 CPUs are basically the same/slightly slower lower in terms of performance as the V3s. It's because IPC is mostly the same between Haswell and Broadwell, but the power consumption of the latter is lower. V3 are also cheaper and can be turbo boost unlocked - running at full throttle all the time.

I installed an AMD RX570 GPU, and it is still speedy on emulation, web browsing, and indie games nearly 17 years later. A 16 year-old computer supports 32GB RAM...that is what boggles my mind. Got it for $20 at a thrift shop. Old workstations are most certainly still worth it, but keep in mind the lack of instruction sets the older you get. That alone causes me to want to upgrade a few years down the line, but it still certainly does the trick for now, even using it as a game server with Sunshine.

  • @alexanderhaag2431
    @alexanderhaag2431 Год назад

    Phil, you mentioned single thread IPC is the downside of this setup. One way to tweak the performance is to use software overclocking with Throttlestop. The CPU voltage can't be adjusted but the max turbo can be pushed up on the unlocked E5-1650v3. You might be able to get to a stable 4 or 4.1 GHz on the first and second core, depending on the "compliance" of your CPU sample.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  Год назад

      Never had success using this method. In general these HP workstations are sort of locked down when it comes to overclocking. Not saying it is impossible, but some methods involve modifying the BIOS with an external programmer... If you want to overclock you might be better off going with a Huanazhi board and custom build.

    • @alexanderhaag2431
      @alexanderhaag2431 Год назад

      With Throttlestop, no BIOS modification is needed. It's just a windows program that allows for adjustment of the CPU clock multiplier "on-the-fly" so the BIOS is never even touched. The downside is that you have to do it after every startup. Some motherboards also allow the modification of the turbo power limit as well, but I think the HP boards do not have that ability.
      I successfully used Throttlestop to tweak the operation frequency of unlocked Westmere, Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, and Haswell CPUs on Dell (T5810) and HP workstations (Z400,Z600, Z420)
      Might be worth a shot to see if you can extract a little more Single-Core performance from the good old E5-1650v3 😊

    I really like the case but, the hardware inside is not of interest to me. I would like to buy an 'empty' case and mod it as necessary to fit an ATX PSU, and my own choice of standardized hardware. I'm not a fan of RGB, glass fish bowl, case designs. I like a hearty front I/O, several 5.25" ODD bays, and plenty of interior space. Honestly , there isn't a single 'gaming' case on the market that checks all the boxes of features I would like to have. Not one.

    • @philscomputerlab
      @philscomputerlab  3 месяца назад

      I wouldn't go with dual CPU but rather a single high core count CPU. The 2667V4 is highly recommended, good blend between clocks and cores. Personally I'd want the top core count model but they aren't cheap.

    • @heyLucifurr
      @heyLucifurr 3 месяца назад

      @@philscomputerlab It came with 2667 V4. But like you said, and I think its a cheaper option to get dual CPU rather that opting for high spec core count cpu. I got the 2650V4 for $8 AUD each amazingly cheap and the CPU riser for $130

    Some of these systems can handle overclockable chips and SOME can handle the Haswell V3 exploits. I would NOT recommend getting 18-22 core CPUs if your tasks require higher IPC. The 10 & 12 core chips work best for boost speeds as the TDP on all these is capped and the high end chips will be held back by core count. Personal recommendation is the OEM only 2666v3 a 10 core 20 thread chip with a 3.5Ghz all core. If your system can take the Turbo Unlock exploits you can get all 10 cores to 3.5Ghz. The 2666v3 is OFTEN found for $30-40 USD.

    • @toseltreps1101
      @toseltreps1101 Год назад

      The 2697v3 14 Core can also do 3.5-3.6 allcore when unlocked.

    • @greenprotag
      @greenprotag Год назад

      @@toseltreps1101 once you get above 10-12 cores, you will lose max all core turbo speed due to TDP limits. You can undervolt, but it's harder and harder to hit the all core turbo. I would say, if single core speed is important, I would not go above the 12core 2690v3. You should be able to hit close to 3.5 all core with undervolting on that chip.

    • @greenprotag
      @greenprotag Год назад

      I personally own the 18 cores 2699v3 and the 10 core 2666v3. Even with turbo unlock exploits, my 2699v3 could only get around 2.8-2.9 all core. Meanwhile my 2666v3 is hitting 3.4-3.5Ghz constantly. I run both of these chips in workstation dual socket motherboards with these exploits.

    It's not "ultra detail" or "high detail". It's "ultra preset/settings" or "high preset/settings" because preset doesn't only affect detail related settings (LOV, texture resolution etc) but also reflection, AO quality, GI quality, soft shadows, and more importantly, lighting quality. Funnily enough texture resolution barely has any impact on performance as long as you've got enough VRAM.

      @@philscomputerlab As far as I know the M6000 is the ultimate GPU that has support for CRTs. That’s why I was wondering. A newer GPU based on Pascal or later would need some kind of HDMI to VGA converter which tend to introduce lag at least the converter I have. I got the S3 equipped P3 Win98SE laptop I mentioned in another video. You showed that the S3 Savage4 can play FF7 and pass all the tests but ironically it refuses to even launch the game or the config. Every other game I’ve tried works so not sure why that is.

    I was checking these Z640 Workstations out a few years ago and their main Achilles Heel are the lack of 8-pin PCIe power connectors from the power supply and the proprietary parts. You really have to be careful with what you're getting and triple-check the specs of the machine you're buying. You could wind up with a low-end dud that you need to sink money into, which defeats the purpose of buying a used Workstation PC in the first place. You also won't be able to legitimately install Windows 11 on them without hacks since they pre-date the Intel 8th Gen CPUs.
