I have a Z8O0 with dual Xeon E5-2699 V4, it’s a 44 core beast. Don’t let anyone bash the HP Z series, because they are built tough. I love both my Z420 six core and my 44 core.

I find stuff like this all the time at Goodwill stores . My main computer ,a high end HP desktop computer year 2020 I bought for $5 at a large community yard sale It had 16 gigs ram a core i7 8 core . I added hard drives and serves as my main computer . Some people have no idea how useful older computers are . Good find .

Old machines are still useful. I just recently retired my old dual core laptop as a daily driver. Light weight Linux distros extended it's live by years. Only reason I stopped using it was because the frame cracked almost in half.

Those old HP Z series are awesome finds. Got a Z620 dumpster diving when covid first hit, 2x 8-Core Sandy Bridge xeons, 64GB RAM, I recently uograded it with RX7600 GPU, 2TB SSD, and Win 11 (TPM Check Bypass). runs like a dream machine despite being 12 years old! Thanks HP 💪

I love these HP systems; they are very good builds. I recently picked up a Z440 with an E5-1650 V3 and a GTX 1070 installed for $90. It runs perfectly, is quiet, and has the memory coolers installed. Overall, these are solid old systems for general use or light gaming.

We don't have yard sales as such much in the UK, wish I could find some of the stuff you get. I got a similar machine as that where the power supply clips out plus on the one I have there is a hard drive compartment that swings out. I had to buy a seperate converter cable to connect to a GPU unless I put a self powered one in.
I only connected it up to see it it works, it does but for now its stuck in my workshop, I need to set it up properly.

Great video as always. When selling it, maybe also offer it as a workstation/server. If that's what they want change out the CPU and sell it as that. Even more people might want to buy it if there's an option for the work they want to do on it... or I think there'll at least be a bit more interest.

I just picked one up too. I just need to add memory and a drive. Mine came with the second CPU/memory riser card. That's why the cooler is offset, to make room for the second CPU riser and cooling ducts. Its Dual Xeon E5-2690 V4, 28 total cores, 2.6 base, 3.5 max turbo. It's over kill for what I'm going to do with it. Will put Linux on it running some docker containers and a webserver. That includes Home Assistant and other toys for my home lab. Do I need it? NO, because I already have a slower server in use. But its just fun to repurpose things and build up your home lab.

Recently picked up two almost identical HP Z420 workstations. Both very clean, not a spec of dust, hair, grime, etc They came from a local TV station and drives had been totally wiped, no OS
Specs for both, 32 gig memory. E5-1607 v2 cpu, 708615-001 MB, 3 1TB drives. DVD drive , Removable hard swap drive bay with 1TB drive. Nvidia quadro k4000 video.
One computer had a serial card and an additional network card.
    $17 each.
Have several newer video cards I can swap out and maybe upgrade CPU's for pretty cheap.

I this very same model. with an E5-2637v4 cpu 3.50GHz 24GB of ram with a GeForce RTX 2060 6gb card. I ran HELLDIVERS 2 game on it and it ran very smooth. your rig is slightly configured different from mines be is essentially the same. However, after installing both an SSD and a SATA drive I noticed the boot speed was not as good, so I removed the SATA drive for max boot sequence, I recommend to be consistent with the drives, go with SSD only, also 160 hertz monitor makes an obvious difference when gaming no screen tearing. best to always use a good gaming monitor. And just to add, this pc can run two processors you can find the caddy on Ebay but it's a bit pricey

The 2nd CPU card would have 4 more RAM slots. I think HP gave it only a total of 8 slots to force people to buy the more expensive flagship HP Z840 which has 16 slots and can take up to 512GB with RDIMMs or 2TB with LRDIMMs.
The empty pads for RAM slots on the Z640 are there because the same motherboard is used in the HP Z440 which has 8 slots but no connector for the 2nd CPU

That's actually a really nice looking MB...we need more colored* PCB action in the market for real....who wants to be only be able to pick only white, black, grey or only some combination of only those 3 colors....it's just so dumb, give me some pink motherboard, blue...purple, green ones....really manufacturers, you want to sell more, give more options the b,w,g is just epically stale already for custom PC builders forcing them to rely on RGB for color in their builds. I'd really like to this board in some sort of all BLUE build...its' really nice and would really 'pop'.

You actually don't need one of those adapters to run a bigger GPU, the extra 2 pins are ground pins, and the 6 pin connector already has ground pins in it. Adding more ground pins won't change the fact that the GPU is already grounded. On top of that, the 6 pin connector will fit perfectly on an 8 pin port and it will only fit the way that it's supposed to sit in the connector, so there's no risk of plugging into those extra ground lines by mistake, the connector won't even fit in the wrong position. The worst it will do is shutdown the PC if it doesn't go well, though I've never had that happen and I've done heavy gaming on a 6 pin plug in an 8 pin port.

Because you only have 4 RAM slots, you can only do dual channel RAM. But if you have 8 slots, you can have quad channel RAM. I wonder if the chipset on this board actually supports 8 slots because you could just solder on the extra 4 slots.
All these old Xeons are a bit weak on single thread score. The 1650 V4 is roughly equivalent to a Ryzen 1600.
Cache is king when it comes to gaming and beyond that, single thread performance. But the people who are going to be buying your PCs are going to believe it is all about clockspeed. This is the reason AMD branded the Athlon XP the way they did because they were getting the same performance at much lower clock speeds. So they branded them in P4 clockspeed equivalent terms. Unfortunately, the megahertz wars are back. However, things aren't working out so well for intel. I got a good chuckle over the i9 debacle. I've been saying for a couple years, it doesn't matter how many times intel says it is OK to run at 95C continuously, that doesn't make it true.
I wouldn't use an IDE DVD drive as a hole filler. A waste of vintage hardware that someone out there would probably use.

Does it meet Windows 11 hardware requirements? Since Windows 10 security support ends in October 2025, it will be dangerous to run Windows 10 after then unless one pays for extended support. MS says that it doesn't promise any updates for Windows 11 running on unsupported hardware. If this machine doesn't meet Windows 11 hardware requirements, its lifetime might be quite limited.
