    CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Things get hot on the old plantation when Bette Davis squares off with everything and everybody to get to what she wants in William Wyler's adaptation of Lillian Hellman's drama of greed in the turn of the century south THE LITTLE FOXES (1941). Shot in full period splendor at Samuel Goldwyn studios during one of the hottest heat waves to hit California in decades, "The Little Foxes" was a troubled shoot from the get-go. Bette Davis and William Wyler fought incessantly over her interpretation of Regina, the lead character, which had been immortalized on stage by Davis' rival Tallulah Bankhead. The heat, along with the frayed nerves, the heavy costumes and the long waits for Cinematographer Gregg Toland to set up intricate shots drove Davis to walk off the set, the production into delays and the tempers into high gear. Wyler vowed he'd never work with Davis again. Yet, despite the problems, the film proved to be a spectacular achievement. Most of the Broadway cast was brought out for the production and all had lucrative film careers after the picture's release. For her part, Davis received her fifth nomination for Best Actress and should have won over eventual winner Joan Fontaine. But the troubles on the "Foxes" set combined with her resignation as president of the Academy had made her too unpopular and although the production itself received numerous nominations, it took home nothing. The scene where Regina sits back and watches her husband die demonstrates what the craft of acting is. Bette Davis just uses the expression on her face and in her eyes to convey her emotions - without saying a word. I cannot even think of any actress today (2018) who can do that. I loved Bette in this movie and the rest of the cast was almost as brilliant as she was. Bravo!!!

      She was one of the greatest FILM actresses of all time. She knew what to do with her face, her hands, her shoulders, how to walk down a staircase, how to pick something up and put it down etc. etc. etc. In her prime she had a kind of impeccable 'film sense' that is unmatched.

      @poetcomic1 :: You hit the nail ! It wasn't just Davis. She was of course unique. I'm talking about actresses being trained in how to descend staircases ; how to walk ; how to open a door and walk into a room ; how to hold a champagne glass ...
      The actresses today don't have those technical skills, except Sigourney Weaver ("Dave"). Kevin Beacon from the male side.

      Yes, she is wonderful in this movie. It was a great part for any actress, especially one with he skill. I saw "The Little Foxes" on stage in 1981, with Elizabeth Taylor as Regina (hers was a fairly mediocre performance, but she WAS Elizabeth Taylor, so it was awesome), but the part of Birdie was played by Maureen Stapleton, and she just totally broke my heart. To this day I can't forget that performance. One of the greatest I've ever seen.

    I share your enthusiasm for this fabulous classic! But I’m sad that you left out my favorite part - the romance between Richard Carlson and Teresa Wright! That part was so popular that a sequel was planned. I don’t know yet why that didn’t end up happening. I’m looking into it!

  • @ladywisewolf3942

    That scene with Marshall desperately trying to climb the stairs ( Wyler had to use a double for Marshall crawling up the stairs because he had a prosthetic leg having lost it in WWI) to get to another bottle of his medicine , and Bette just absolutely frozen in that chair. Someone else reviewing this film said her face looked like a mask( I think that was done on purpose) unnaturally white and expressionless. Oohh ! It still gives be chills when I see it today! Her character was just the definition of Machiavellian malevolence!

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  8 месяцев назад

      Wyler fought against her make-up throughout the filming, but just as she did later in "Baby Jane' she chose that white make-up to give her a kabuki like effect. Wyler said the white ghostly make-up served to de-sexualize the character and that Regina used her sex appeal, especially with her husband, to get what he wanted. He urged her to take a softer, more flitatious approach and not throw her weight around until she had to. That way, she gave the character more of an arch with someplace to go. But Davis thought she should be hard, cold and evil throughout and wouldn't budget. They fought constantly and as a result Wyler vowed he'd never work with her again and he never did.

    • @ladywisewolf3942
      @ladywisewolf3942 8 месяцев назад

      @@STEVEHAYESTOQ Wow! I didn't know the mask-like face was her idea. I'm hard pressed to know who was right, Wyler or Davis? 🤔 I think the white face worked well for that particular death scene, but Wyler had a point for the rest of the picture.

    The infamous scene where Regina sits rigidly in her chair while her husband dies struggling up the stairs was due to William Wyler. Bette had, as usual, whipped out her legal size yellow pad and pencil and insisted she have more dialogue. He told her to put away that 'damn yellow pad' and snapped the pencil in two and told her to do the scene as he wanted it. Later, as they watched the dailies together she turned to him and said 'You were absolutely right.' This was the story she told to Dick Cavett. She said that Wyler was the only director she trusted and he was always right.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  4 года назад +1

      But she didn't trust him enough not to make him miserable throughout the shooting and after the hell she put him through with "Little Foxes", he vowed never to work with her again and he never did, much to her dismay. She often shot herself in the foot and this instance was one of those times. So stupid.

    This is raw savagery and so far ahead of its time. When poor Patricia Collinge is slapped so hard it speaks of a world of abuse, and you're in a time where Bette Davis is monstrous in order to survive. I can't begin to imagine how the audience reacted when this was first shown. Lillian Hellman wrote the original play and tackled subjects not dealt with before.

Didn't realize it was also a Wyler directed film. Did you catch the introduction that Wyler's son gave to Jezebel on TCM? It was super informative about his father's contribution to directing and how well he worked with Bette Davis, bringing out her excellence albeit combatively. And at the end Mankiewicz said they'd had an affair. Can't wait to see Little Foxes!

      I think youll love "the Little Foxeses". I believe her three with Wyler: , "Jezebel,. " The Letter" and "The Little Foxes", are, with the exception of "AllAbout Eve", her greatest roles. They were co=-wrkers, lovers and they often fought like tigers, especially during the making of "Foxes", with Wyler bowing afterwards he'd never work with her again, but like John Wayne & John Ford, Gary Cooper and Howard Hawks, Hepburn and Cukor, Bogart and Huston, Errol Flynn and Michael Curtiz, they had that magical spark that raised their work together above all the others. Thanks for watching and I hope you subscribe. Best Wishes; Steve

    Good review. I notice the majority of comments here praising Bette Davis - and nothing wrong with that; she may be the greatest actress who ever lived. But I always have to draw the attention to Herbert Marshall, so wise , sympathetic, and utterly domed here. Greatest performance he ever gave, and he absolutely should have been nominated for Best Actor.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  Год назад +2

      I totally agree. Marshall never got his just rewards and he did it all while working with an amputated leg, which he got in WWI. Subtle here and wonderfully villainess in "Foreign Corrospondent" and as the beleagured husband in "The Letter" once again with Davis and all made around the same time. I later loved him as Somerset Maugham in "The Razor's Edge". Re,arkable actor! Happy New Year! Steve

As for "The Razor's Edge", that's actually the other movie I thought he should have been nominated for. His turn as Somerset Maugham was Best Supporting Actor-worthy. Clifton Webb was really good in that too. Thanks for the reply, happy new year to you as well!

    Davis was criticized for copying Bankhead’s stage performance, and if she did, it was the right thing to do. It is a brilliant characterization and, if it is copied, it gives you a sense of what the great Tallulah Bankhead may have been like on the stage, as she never seemed comfortable with the camera. This picture makes a lot more sense and packs more punch if you see “Another Part of the Forest,” which Hellman wrote as a prequel to explain how these vicious, terrible people got to be the way they are.

      Hi Steve,
      As I didn't see a review of "The Man Who Came to Dinner" (starring Monty Wooley, Bette Davis, Ann Sheridan, Jimmy Durante and one of my favorite character actresses, Mary Wickes) on your RUclips channel, I thought I would make a suggestion to you to review that film sometime, when you have some spare moments. Frankly, I am surprised you hadn't already done so, as you seem to review most classic films which star the best-known actors and actresses in cinema, of which Miss Davis certainly qualifies.
      And I figured it would be a good place to send you a message on a RUclips page (such as right here) of another Bette Davis film, since there is no longer a link to send private messages on RUclips. I don't like to use social networking sites such as Facebook and Google+. But I have been registered on RUclips since before Google purchased this site. And I like it that one may always edit and delete one's comments if one chooses.
      I have actually been looking for a source for film reviews since the deaths of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. And while "Tired Old Queen at the Movies" doesn't review brand new films, you certainly do provide a lot of fun in your campy and offbeat analysis of classic films. Whenever my best friend and i have one of our film marathons, I always try to include one of your reviews on the viewing menu before or after watching the film.
      But please tell me, Steve, do you ever totally trash any truly bad films? All the reviews I have seen on your RUclips channel have been on the positive side. And I am betting you could really skewer some terrible films in the same excellent manner that you provide clever and witty criticism about the films you enjoy. But if you don't like to waste time and precious web space dishing bad films, is there another RUclips channel or website you recommend that does provide witty condemnation (in video format) of awful cinema, either of new or old films? As the old TV commercial for "The National Enquirer" used to put it, "Inquiring minds want to know."
      Keep up the good work! And Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2019!!
      Jim M.

    Bette Davis is famous for being the wrong actress in every role she played except 'The Man Who Came to Dinner', which she did only because she wanted to act with John Barrymore who didn't get the part. She ruins Hellman's perfect 'well-made play' with that absurd hairdo and her ridiculous mannerisms. Then Wyler dumbs it down for the average audience. Davis isn't even old enough for the part, Bankhead would have been better, or Claudette Colbert, or Myrna Loy...or anybody.
