Used this to fix my 7 year old mixer by myself. I ordered just the gear without realizing but since I had the part I went ahead and tried. Using the techniques from this video I was able to get it all working again on my own! Thank you so much!
My same gear went out mixing 2 bowls of loaf bread dough. Machine not tough enough in my estimation. 3 days to get my part. I ordered gear only, i would recommend getting assembled as author if this video did! Worth time and hassle I went through. I bought 3/32 punch to remove ring pin. Put tool money into assembly. Hello from England. I've been trying, without success, to find someone to service my Kitchenaid. Having watched your clear and informative video, I shall attempt to do the myself. I've subscribed and liked. Thank you
thanks for the video, you just helped me tear down a friends kitchenaid which had sentimental value and wouldnt run. they are well built and hers just needed the rotor cleaned
Great video ,thanks ! Followed your instruction to change the plastic gear wheel .This wheel is plastic and all others metal to act as an overload protection and strips the plastic teeth if too much of a load is put on the machine . I decided to dismantle the wheel from its housing and found the pin through the gearwheel easy to remove with a fine punch . In the UK the wheel alone is £13 , while the wheel complete with housing is £32 . Thank you very much for taking the time to make such an instructional video !!
Just bought my first KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer yesterday - -This helps a ton for future repair purposes!! I am a frugal diy'er also and this video definitely helps. eReplacement parts, & Repair Clinic have been my go to for lawn mower, blower, weed eater, washer, microwave, and refrigerator parts - fortunately I also have a local appliance parts company 5 miles from my house that usually stocks whirlpool/maytag/kitchenaid/GE, etc... parts, so I can get them same day and save on shipping - - also proven to be less expensive than the online parts companies. ie: recently replaced (2nd time)GE fridge, evap fan on both online stores was over $80.00, local store had in stock for $35.00..Thanks for the very informative video!!!
Great video! Actually gives me confidence to get a KA now that I understand what the "Plastic Gear" is all about and how it can be reasonably replaced. I wanted a KA, but was getting frightened off due to all the reviews about this issue.
Thanks ....I just ordered the gear, ....saved your step by step video and I think I can do this. I was reading that his is the first thing to break as to save the motor and other parts from breaking . Thanks Again...great video
My wife is Filipina too and her kitchenaid is making a clicking sound, but still functioning. I'm glad I found your channel. I'm sure I can relate to a lot that you've shared. I look forward to watching more of your videos. Thank you for this video. I have a feeling that the clicking she heard might be the same gear about to fail. We hope not because she uses that mixer for so many recipes. Now, she's making ube pandesal with cheese and halaya. Yummy! The dough is pretty heavy which is why we think the mixer is working overtime.
Wow that was awesome yes I have one of those in the garage I broke yours ago same thing happened to mine I never fixed it still in the garage I will make sure to send this to the person that owns it now good job love you
Thanks for this! Notes: It's called a "worm gear." Kitchen Aid and Whirlpool manufacture them of nylon purposefully, so that it will break if the motor becomes stressed (for example, when your young adult child tosses a hard-frozen stick of butter into the bowl while the mixer is running, thinking that it's a Kitchen Aid and therefore indestructible!) thus protecting other, harder to repair components. A web search for replacement parts, indicating the model number from the label on the appliance should locate a source. I paid just under $20 for the part and 2-day shipping. Worth it for a $350+ small appliance, the use of which I have been sorely missing!!
Just fixed my mixer from watching your video $0 ~ the little pin that you took out and then put back had fallen out. put mine back in and it was fine. Thank you
Great job on the video, but a few things that come to mind that I’d like to add: 1. When I took mine apart, our use the dome cover on the back, it’s a little bowl for my screws. 2. The worm gear, is deliberately made plastic to protect the motor, it’s designed to self-destruct if too much pressure is put on the gear. 3. To replace the gear itself, remove the tower as shown in this video, and then take a smaller Phillips screwdriver, and type out the pin found in the shaft. This security The worm gear. 4. Before assembly, be sure that you apply ample amount of grease to all the gear surfaces. As to little grease as in this video video, will result in the worm gear failing sooner
Got my gear from ereplacements, raining today so it's out to the garage to do the deed. I'm thinking I can get away with just removing the 4 screws under the motor housing. I'll be back and report when it's done. Thanks for the clear video, pal! Now I know to hunt down the square driver and to take a can or something out there to catch the grease. [Later] OK, I'm done. You're right: it has to come apart as you said (which is not intuitive...did you have help? The ring and the drive pin are not especially obvious.) The shaft with the pin was badly stuck so the only thing I would add would be to have penetrating oil handy and be sure to grease all shafts during reassembly. Otherwise it went just as you said, and again my thanks for the video!
To day I was mixing dough and the Planetary stops spinning was lots of noise so I end up probably w a broken gear don't know yet but BIG Thanks for your Vid.
Good job, but there is one thing you need to know (and all watching this video as well). That "plastic" gear is a safety feature. This is "the weakest link" by purpose and it's there to fail if one of the attachments encounters something which would make the drive stop. If not designed to fail more bad things could happen, like gear damage beyond repair, or a stuck motor which might catch fire or burn out. This little gear is the safety net. You should have replaced the grease with new food grade grease. The gear sells for $12 on Sears parts website and for $8 on Amazon with free two day shipping for Prime members. Amazon sells also the food grade grease for $10/jar. Merry Christmas!
Why didn't you replace that contaminated grease? They sell food grade grease at most big box hardware stores. Not knocking you... Just curious since you were already in there
Nice! Tips to remember if you do this job on your own for other viewers is safety first unplug it, make sure to remove all the old broken chips out of the "food grade grease" and only use food safe grease in them this is very important. Never use automotive grease. I'm curious how they are powered over in the Philippines are they wired for 240Volts? or do they use a power converter? I know in Canada they are 120Volts and if you hook it up to 240Volts it will burn out the motor and mini circuit board real fast. I didn't get a good look at the plug in this video to know if Kitchen Aid is making a 240Volt model... Hmmm?
Awesome video. I’m watching because the agitator shaft (shaft that extends into the bowl and connects to attachments) on my K5SS broke at the tip. After removing the planetary I could not figure out how to separate the shaft from the gear / rest of planetary. Do you have any insight or help? The replacement shaft is sold so I assume it is possible. Thanks for the great videos
Personally, I would have replaced all the grease. When I fix mine (just found out this morning the accessory drive doesn't work), I'll be doing just that. It's recommended to replace the grease every 2 - 3 years.
Ever had an issue with the variable speed on/off switch? When I slide the switch to any of the speed settings nothing happens for several seconds. When itdoes turn on by itself the mixer runs perfectly. thanks
You are amazing! I haven't EVER done anything like this.... but I bake a mean batch of cookies!!! Almost daily.... Don't judge! I am so excited to try to fix my mixer next week. How did you know what to look for on the internet for the part? I would just call it a motor spinny thingie.... IS there a name for it? And what type of website am I looking for? I order everything on Amazon.... but I figure this would be a specialized shop... and specific part. Yes? Thank you!!!
Did you notice the part you purchased, gear is not same quality metal as the old one. Do you see a pin, in that new assembly or the old one you jave, is it bent? Mine is bent. Is that normal
Did you by any chance remove the stater pins on the machine. If you didn’t it’s OK, you can disregard this suggestion. However if you did, as I did on mine, these Stator pins have to be put back On the proper side, AND Correct orientation.
Hi There, great video. I think I have same machine. The front part where the attachment head moves freely. Which shouldn't move like that I guess. How should I fix that.
@@LifewithaFilipina Actually I was able to open. To my surprise everything looked fine, I noticed the pin had come off, due to that, small gear was not moving. I put the pin it started to work. Here is what I found, small pin was bent is that ok or normal?
Hi, thanks for the great video! At 5:11, you remove two screws from the back. In mine, these seem to be a square (Robertson) drive. Are they in yours, too? If so, did you need to buy some specialized screwdriver for them? Mine is also an Artisan stand mixer. Thanks!
Hi Jhonatan - I had one of those long screws at the rear of the mixer drop out during operation (caused the bowl to jam as well). I was able to tighten the screw with a Phillips Cr-V Screwdriver Bit No.2 I have been unable to source a set of 'square' driver bits anywhere, to add the the multitude of strange-shaped bits I already have...!
I have a Kitchen Aid brand blender., The bug worked and suddenly stopped working., What will., Since this type of repaired I have never done it., I have repaired other things but this is the first time .. someone help me please thanks....
J avais le même problème que vous , j ai réussi a changer le pignion , par contre , maintenant min kitchenaid demarre a la vitesse 2 et non 1 .pourquoi ??merci de me répondre
That unit being 5 years old and used quite often needs to be re-greased! AND, you didn't grease the new gear. You may have plastic pieces in that grease. You need to take all that old grease out of their and re-pack it. Don't they make that plastic gear with metal rather than plastic?

Lol! Thank you for the great video.
Very thorough and with a mild sense of humor, probably not intended.
I’d exact same issue. Your video saved me $$$$. I’ve replaced only the gear for $10. Thank you very much for the video 🤟👏
Great info on how to open the machine, for a variety of repair reasons. Thank you
Thank you! I have never fixed anything in my life. I was able to repair my Kitchenaid and save $300.
A very helpful video. We just got our mixer fixed for the same reason by following this video. Many thanks.

Well done!
I wanted to thank you. Thanks to your amazing video , excellent explanation, i changed the worm gear successfully. I fixed my KitchenAid 🥳🙌

I agree but most parts are crappily made now! Why do they sell 10 packs of these gears?
Hey there, I must have sent 50 people to your site recently after fixing my mixer. Thanks

Hello,
Thank you for the video.
I think the same thing happened to our mixer.
Do you have a link to the part (s) you replaced?
Thank you!
Thanks
The worm gear is at the shaft of the motor, the plastic gear is the spur gear that will break to safe the motor.

Do you see a pin, in that new assembly or the old one you jave, is it bent? Mine is bent. Is that normal
The tilt head control on my KA mixer stuck. Can you help? Thanks
What is the plastic piece called?
By the way excellent guidance. Loved the video

I'm from Montreal i speak French
Help! I can't remove the pin that you removed at 2:40, any tips?
lo hacer ver muy fácil asi que lo voy a intentar
my mixer turns slowly and stops. what will be the problem
What is the model number of your KA mixer ?
Hi mate,,mine when i flug and put in 1,2,3 or 10 is dosen't work and even no noise in the motor,so may what is the problem on that.thanks
No noise from motor, that's not good. Check to see if power is getting to the switch, then check if it's getting to the motor
