The problem with the "take them at their word" approach *in this case* (obviously we should've taken Hitler seriously and literally) is that the CCP has been saying that they will invade Taiwan (eventually) for over half a century now. It's been so frequent that citizens of the Soviet Union made a running joke of the phrase "China's last warning" all the way back in the 60s and 50s. What complicates the issue for Free World policy makers is that a threat from Beijing is an empty threat - until it isn't.

Also why do we take china at their word - as far as I know they never said they wanna only reunite militarily. They always say they "wanna reunite, ideally peacefully". Which ofc includes the possibility of military action. Now compare to Ukraine. It rejected Minsk II and said it rather fights for Donbass instead of getting it back through the peace deal. Ukraine officially said it is not gonna do Minsk II and it officially said it is going to "militarily" (not by all means necessary, but specifically by force) take back Donbass and Crimea. What exactly did people expect from that? That Russians don't listen to them? That the Russian intelligence services don't see that the Ukrainians build up an ever stronger army?

Indeed. We in the US have to wake up to the fact that trying to go and negotiate and open up markets with nations like this have extreme risk.
Russia’s actions in 2014 should have been the wake-up call for Europe but they didn’t act. Now they are facing the consequences of that inaction.
If they had acted, maybe the message would have been sent that there is a line Russia should not ever dare cross.
China has demonstrated similar actions where they have border conflicts with every one of its neighbors, got into a conflict with India at their disputed border that killed soldiers on both sides, and have continually escalated their despotic rhetoric.

The bigger issue for China is the massive decline in young workers due to the lingering effects of the One-Child policy. In ten years, China won't have enough workers to sustain their export model. At the same time, they don't have enough wealthy middleclass citizens to sustain a consumption economy. The simple reality is that China is staring down the barrel of demographic collapse.

Do you honestly think that if the CCP demands it, local governments will not make the births happen? They will. One way or another. They are already trying to force marriage heavy handed now. If this is not going to work, and it really is not so far, _other measures_ will be taken.

If Taiwan was smart and wants to stay independent they would build such a deterrent that china would think twice. Anti aircraft missiles and missiles like the tomahawk and better that would sink ships well before they got close to Taiwan, like in harbor. China wiil shoot missiles also of course but you have to have a sizeable force. This is only if they want to stay free.

I was initially skeptical about this womans political leanings, but she's been accurate on many topics for a while now. She knows what she's talking about & backs up everything she says.
China wants Taiwan because it's the island of the golden capacitor. The very best chinese semiconductor can't match the worst Taiwanese semiconductor.
Chinese tech sucks & nearly everything developed in china was stolen from the west. Russia found out the hard way how much they reverse engineer everything.
Many high-tech industries are incentivised to pull out of china & it's working well.
There's also the problem of nationalization of a western fabrication plant overnight. That's a multi billion dollar loss overnight with zero chance or recuperating their losses. The risks are now outweighing gains of cheap labor, no epa, no unions, no heathcare & favorable incentives to locate.
There's a massive amount of advanced high technological development in Taiwan.
Everything you own from motherboards/ PCB's to memory modules are Taiwanese.
It's probable they will go after Taiwan once they've developed enough load carrying capacity to make a successful assault. They're getting there quickly.

Taiwan has been the king of smaller. China can barely make 50 nanometer while Taiwan has been pumping out 5 and 10 nanometer.
A.I. needs 3 nanometer and smaller.
Under Biden, the US has passed a law which forces the manufacturers (such as NVIDEA) to produce these 3 nanometer and smaller ONLY on US soil.

Or that she’s a Columbia and Harvard grad with numerous published books?

Private companies shouldnt have any influence over politics because for private companies there is only one goal and that is to make money. So they will infleunce decisions that will make them more money even if they are bad for everyday working people (and they usually are) and that conflicts with very purpose of politics which is to make life good for most people. Now some will say "politicians are bad, they dont care about you" which is partially true. But see, in the description of politicans job is to take care of the people so they will at least somewhat think of them while making political decisions while private companies wont think about them at all.

    • @gerardmichaelburnsjr.
      @gerardmichaelburnsjr. 2 месяца назад +2

You are right about corporations, but the purpose of politics is to promote the power, wealth, and prestige of politicians and people in high positions of government. That is a worse problem than the one of corporations. Constitutional systems are intended to give people who are not intimately involved in politics, and therefore do not get their wealth and prestige from it, and little or no power, the possibility of forcing or at least influencing those in political office, or bureaucratic office, to at least give some consideration to the rest of the population.

    • @odietamo9376

So you think governments only have the best interests for everyone at heart? You are really naive. Sure, the private sector wants to make money, but government wants, more than anything else, POWER. Do you think government cares for ordinary citizens? You are really naive. Business might want your money by buying their products and services, but they can’t force you to buy them. Government takes your money and you have no choice in the matter. Corporations can’t arrest you and put you in prison. Only government can do that. Wake up.
