    1) In 1894, Japan invaded China and Korea, the Qing govt was defeated and signed the [Treaty of Shimonoseki] to cede Taiwan Island to Japan.
    2) During the WW2, at the Cairo Conference held in 1943, China asked the transfer of Taiwan's sovereignty back to China after the war. This content was included in the [Cairo Declaration] and later reiterated in the [Potsdam Proclamation] that it shall be implemented.
    3) In 14 Aug & 2 Sept 1945, the Emperor and govt of Japan issued the [End War Edict] and [Japanese Instrument of Surrender], Japan surrendered and accepted the [Potsdam Proclamation]. Japanese troops in Taiwan surrendered to KMT General CKS and Taiwan re-entered the territory of the Republic of China (ROC).
    4) Soon after that China civil war broke out in between KMT and CCP, the KMT was defeated and fled to Taiwan. However, due to US intervention, the CCP without strong navy at that time has no ability to unify Taiwan. The CCP then established the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. The civil war continues.
    5) In 1971, UN Resolution No. 2758 ruled that the PRC had obtained the representation rights and all legal rights originally owned by the ROC in the UN. That means the PRC is China’s only legal govt under international law and is recognized by 181 countries around the world, including the USA.
"The USA recognizes the Government of the PRC as the sole legal Government of China."
"The USA acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China."
Joint Cummunique on the Establishment of Diplomatic relations between the PRC and the USA in 1979.
Please refer to President Jimmy Carter's Speech on Relations with China.
    6) Therefore, according to international law, international reality, and the wishes of the 1.4 billion Chinese people, Taiwan should return to PRC and the PRC have every rights to protect it's sovereign integrity.

Agree 100%. For its own security and image, China should not let Taiwan out of its hand for it to become the lapdog of the US that will be used as a military base right in front of China's doorstep. But I hope China will not make the mistake of attacking its own people. Moreover Taiwanese built what they are today without any input of mainland China. China can be authoritarian but needs also some level of tolerance for Taiwan. Don't become a hopeless dictator like Russia or North Korea whose people are suffering a lot. Force is the last option for china, not first like USA.
USA also thought the same in 1950, Korean war. They didn't listen to China's warning, thinking china is all talk no bite, and even if they did bite, usa alone would just crush them easily, let alone with SK, and 17 other UN countries combined as well.
Then reality happened, whole US divisions and even whole armies got crushed, USA was forced by China to do the longest retreat in USAs military history, and they were forced to retreat halfway across the whole of korea to the 38th parallel where they remain till this day. The exact spot that China warned usa not to cross otherwise china would join the war and use force to make USA comply. Which they did do(enter the war), and have done until today(make usa stay below the 38th parallel)
That was back in 1950, 74 years ago and when China had nothing. No technology, no weapons, no nukes, not even an air force or Navy, and no economy whatsoever. Yet China still chose to enter the war and force uss to comply with Chinas wishes(stay below 38th, stay out of Chinas land neighbours territory). China warned USA again during Vietnam war but this time is listened and never stepped one foot into North Vietnam during the whole war lol.
The term paper tiger was also coined by mao/China to describe usa just before the Korean war to convince Chinese generals etc to fight a war vs USA since many were scared of usas technological and economic might compared to Chinas. Its pretty funny since it basically has the same meaning as all bark, no bite..
You are thinking the same thing that usa did 74 years ago, and something that china also claimed about usa.
Difference being that history has proven China was right. And usa was wrong. Since 1950/Korean war, many others have believed China and also proven that USA is indeed a paper tiger. Countries like Vietnam, Afghanistan, Cuba, etc. today countries like Russia, Iran, Venezuela and of course China itself continues to prove the point that China made 74 years ago is still true today.

    When ?

  • @MillennialAngst
    @MillennialAngst 22 дня назад +1

    Here it is:
    1) The current legal status of Taiwan is based on the Treaties of San Francisco and Taipei, in which Japan merely renounced sovereignty over Taiwan. However, Japan never formally transferred sovereignty to anyone, not even the ROC. This means that Taiwan's sovereignty belongs to nobody. The ROC merely controls and administers Taiwan; it doesn't legally own it.
    2) Pro-unification people conveniently ignore the Treaties of San Francisco and Taipei, yet they readily cite the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations as "proof" that Taiwan belongs to the PRC. This is hilarious because: a) declarations, unlike treaties, are non-binding (i.e., they don't carry legal weight), and b) the two declarations were between the US, UK, and ROC; the PRC wasn't even in existence yet.
    3) The UN resolution (which is non-binding) recognizing the PRC as the sole legitimate government of China relates only to representation in the UN. It doesn't legally establish that Taiwan belongs to the PRC. Since both the PRC and ROC both believe in "one China" and that the UN chooses to recognize the PRC, of course they're going to say that Taiwan is a province of China. If the UN were to switch to recognition of the ROC, does that mean that mainland China belongs under the rule of Taipei?
    4) China uses the word "reunification," but the PRC has never controlled Taiwan. Taiwan has been under ROC rule longer than the PRC has existed. Further, the idea that Taiwan is being "separatist" implies that it's under the control of the PRC, which obviously isn't the case.
    5) If "reunification" means that Taiwan "belongs" under PRC control, then why? As already mentioned, the PRC has never controlled Taiwan and the PRC has no legal claim to Taiwan.
    6) The idea that Taiwan is being "separatist" because it's seeking formal independence is also laughable. The KMT is totally against the idea of a "Republic of Taiwan," so formal independence is not politically feasible at the moment. The vast majority of Taiwanese are in favor of maintaining peace, understanding that a declaration of independence would incite war. This is also the U.S.' official policy. The U.S. doesn't support Taiwan's independence, and it supplies arms to deter Chinese invasion and protect the safety of the Taiwanese.
    7) An invasion of Taiwan would be a continuation of the civil war between the PRC and ROC, in which case the ROC has every right to defend itself. Who it gets weapons and assistance from doesn't matter, doesn't violate the One China policy, and has nothing to do with the One China policy.
    8) Having established that the PRC holds no legal claim over Taiwan (thereby debunking the "separatist" myth) and has never ruled Taiwan (thereby debunking the "reunification" myth), we can conclude that the PRC's desire is nothing more than to annex Taiwan, overthrow the ROC government, and bring Taiwan under CCP rule - against the desire of the nearly 24 million people who live there and simply want to be left alone.

The US' position has always been that it "acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China," according to Jimmy Carter. It has never admitted or agreed that Taiwan is a province of the PRC. Countries choosing to recognize the PRC as the sole legitimate government of China do so because the PRC has made it their policy that it will only establish diplomatic relations on the condition that they don't formally recognize the ROC/Taiwan.
So when the UN says that Taiwan is a province of China, they are merely stating/representing the PRC's position on the matter. What if the UN were to recognize the ROC instead? Would that mean that all of mainland China territory suddenly belonged under ROC sovereignty and the capital of "China" moved to Taipei? I don't think so.

Taiwan and Penghu are leftover issues from World War II. See Treaty of San Francisco.
At the time, the U.S. government helped the Chinese Nationalist Party (Republic of China), which had been defeated in the Chinese Civil War, escape to Taiwan, which was then a Japanese colony. See Formosa betrayed.
After the Chinese Kuomintang came to Taiwan, it still maintained dictatorial rule, but moved towards democracy under pressure from the United States, and the Taiwanese entered the Republic of China to fight for their rights.
The Chinese who lost their privileges in Taiwan united with the People's Republic of China to steal Taiwan and Penghu.
