This games has the best race AI and car damage - I limped from 1st to 13th with a blown out tyre and sparking rims. The only negative I can spot are is no body roll when cornering. Makes all the other race games on Switch look cheap.
For the switch it really looks like a homerun since it hasn't got a single actual good racing game and the known kinda good racing games ported to switch are just horrible with very low performance, low visuals and high input lag... However in terms of all platforms I can't say I ever liked GRID, I played all of them in my Xbox360 back then, the game looked great, sounded great but the gameplay is very strange and annoying for me, the First one I also played in the PC and was more for drifting but was super damn strange... Wish there was something like the good old Gran Turismo or Forza or whatever... But then again with the lack of analog triggers is kinda pointless, even spintires I had great time on the PC with the Xbox One controller, but on the switch is horrible without the analog triggers on any controller and I won't be buying any other controller, Switch Pro controller and nintendo Switch console overall should have had 100% analog trigger support from day one. PS: I heard GRID supports analog triggers but I won't be buying gamecube controllers anyway and I only play portable, it even makes me sick the super expensive crap joy-cons not having analog triggers when a huge amount of cheap android controllers have them and with even better joysticks too...

Great review, but is there practice and qualifying in the game? Can't find any review that says if there is. Never really liked driving games where just start at the back of the grid all the time.
Great review as always - Its a fab port that fills a huge gap in the Switch line up so I have no problems with a 9/10 in the context of it being a portable switch game. It's puzzled me why devs have struggled to get a good looking semi-realistic racer at a decent frame rate up and running on the switch when they were fairly common back on the 360 and PS3 era. Its my hope that this sells like hotcakes and Codies / Feral roll around in cash for week or so before green lighting a switch specific adaption of a Dirt or F1 game as a follow up. However with regards to your comparisons to other consoles / pcs, I think there are some stunning racers that cater for all tastes and hardware specs which surpass this - after all, it is a port of a mobile port of a 360 era game. Personal favourites include... Project Cars 2 in VR, Assetto Corsa on pc for sim authenticity, Dirt Rally 2.0 feels incredible with a wheel setup and for arcade / simcade knockabout fun there's the Forza Horizon / Forza Motosports / F1 201X series, which I've sunk 100s of hours into on the xbox x. Drifting (chortle) slightly off topic, the last couple of months of releases suggests that 3rd party studios and port specialist devs have finally got a decent handle of what it takes to optimise and work within the constraints of what the Switch can do (or more likely, they saw Switch game and console sales explode last year and we're just now seeing the fruits of their efforts when a studio takes the switch seriously as a commercially viable platform)... I mean recent games like Spyro, NBA 2K, Snooker / Cricket19, Bulletstorm, Divinity II, Sonic Team Racing - sure there are compromises like res scaling and 30 fps caps but they are all technically solid, playable ports that look good and work well as portable full fat adaptions of their source material... multiplayer is still an area of concern but I actually think that's at least partly due to the shortcomings of Nintendo's own half baked online service.
Thanks Scott! Firstly, hope all is ok with you - and thanks for the kind words as always. I'm a huge fan of the F1 series - picked up a PS4 again over the weekend because I couldn't be without it for much longer lol. F1 2019 is brilliant, love the F2 part and the rest is as good as ever. You're spot on about the ports too, Switch has some ace ports and when you really think the Switch is basically a mobile tablet, some of the stuff is very impressive. For all its faults, I still think FIFA is a great port version considering its pretty full featured. I won't be getting 20 on the Switch though as they blatantly taking the pee!!
@@SwitchedOn I'm actually not a huge F1 fan in real life but picked up F1 2016 on steam a few years back after I impulse purchased a Logitech wheel for the Xbox / PC - found it a bit meh. That was nearly the end of my F1 gaming career but along came 17 with decent reviews and a cheap early sale and I gave the series another go... and suddenly something clicked. F1 2018 and 19 have been week 1 purchases for me - both are great fun and a really solid evolution of the series each year :-). I'd still prefer a Dirt or Dirt Rally port though on switch - tried Vrally after seeing your review (that's how I stumbled on your vids) but it just didn't click for me - even after the US launch patch fixed some of its issues. WRC8 is above average on Xbox but will wait and see what the switch version is like - the bar for what's acceptable (to me) in a portable racer has jumped up suddenly in the last week for some reason :-). And regarding FIFA 19 on switch... (looks around to make sure no one on the internet is watching him praise an EA game)... I quite liked it too :-). I get why serious fans dislike the lack of parity with the other consoles in terms of game engine, features and game play but I picked it up on sale by which time it had been patched up a bit and was just looking for a bit of a kick about against the CPU with TV style production values... and from that perspective, I had fun!
If I were them now (and all the licenses worked out), I'd hold the physical back for the multiplayer release and have it all on cart. Would be a nice feature.
Both quite different. Asphalt is very arcade based with super fast races and over the top stunts - still very good and a lot of fun. GRID is more "sim"Cade focussed on track racing and being more realistic. Definitely room for both and Asphalt is free to download, so no reason not to try it.
Tbh one massive problem you didn't mention is the real life tracks insane level of inaccuracy. It honestly drives me a bit nuts on the tracks I know really well because it fundamentally changes the way you have to drive them. The most noticable problem could be done on purpose but it's that the tracks are twice as wide or more than real life. Bathurat and brands hatch especially are big examples because those tracks are pretty narrow in real life or on any laser scanned versions of the tracks. But just about every real world track in grid autosport is at the very least way too wide but also some seem to be completely wrong layout and undulation wise too. It's a real shame IMO because it kind of ruins what would be my favorite tracks
I get what you mean Hugo, but it is a 'sim-cade' game and tbf, they are close enough representations and more importantly, the 100% accuracy has probably been sacrificed to make the tracks enjoyable. Its never going to be a Project Cars or iRacing etc, but it is a fun time :)
@@SwitchedOn well on the driving side it's not much worse than a project cars or a forza so I think especially since the races top out at 12, they could've made the tracks accurate. It's not like they have to fit 40 cars on the track. The f1 games have decently accurate tracks too and I think the physics engine is about the same for those Maybe the real reason they're so wide is because they're just upgraded versions of what's in grid 2 and instead of redoing the tracks to be accurate they left em as is It's just a killer for me because I know those tracks so well besides algarve
Totally agree with your review. It's as close to a 10/10 racing game for the Switch as we could dream of. If the multiplayer lives up to expectation I don't see any reason it shouldn't get a top score :)
It's great but not the best and missing a lot that makes a full racing game. Id say its closer to a game like ridge racer than grand turismo. 1st the Career mode isn't a full mode, there's no garage or map to look at customize and buy or upgrade your cars. Your just giving a new car and track in each event and sent on your way. What's the point of high res graphics if you can't view and modify your own cars.im not talking about tuning which you can do. O btw it also does not look great in handheld mode! Controls are fun and intuitive.V rally 4 might not look as good but is a much fuller experience. Let's hope wrc 8 is a more fuller experience.
@@SwitchedOn tbf? I think I was playing in performance. I may have downloaded the hi res pack wrong. Does it matter if the game is installed on the system and the pack on my sd card? Do you think I should redownload game on to the sd card? Also when I hit another car in the game the effect looks like glitchy particles, is it sopusped to look like that?
@@maxloomis1712 tbf = too be fair, sorry! Yea, the 'glitch' when you crash is deliberate design choice and I guess meant to simulate the 'camera' getting a whack. I don't really like that as I play with helmet cam so wouldn't have a 'camera'.
@@SwitchedOn do you play with a wheel? You should try and do a video on compatible wheels with the Nintendo switch now that were getting better racing games. If your into racing wheel set ups?
Zsokorad same here but the car keeps oversteering into a spin all the time. To stop it I’ve enabled the Stability control but that causes an accelerating lag where the car won’t accelerate until the stability control has everything settled. I’m using a switch lite and it’s annoying as the cars don’t feel like I’m in full control. Using Balanced and simulation handling the issue is the same with the stability control but without it the cars are almost impossible to control.
This isn't even a maybe, it's a must have.. we have to support this sort of switch endeavour. However, I'm going for the physical :) Can't believe one moronic metacritic reviewer dragged the final score into "mediocre" range. Idiots. Hopefully more publications give it much deserved higher ratings to bring it back into the green.
@@SwitchedOn They complained about frame rate and lack of analog control even though they did mention gamecibe controller compatibility and right stick throttle option.. they ragged on the game for no reason basically as the frame rate is amazing for switch and they should have *commended* the developer for offering all the analog options that no other racing game on switch does, and actually tried it, rather than rip them apart and say "it's useless on switch cause of the maximum acceleration at all times when right rigger is pressed" Idiots, they should have their metacritic status revoked. Anyway, at least I know never to take any review of theirs seriously again. I'll BRB with the particular reviewer's name..
@@SwitchedOn Ok the rogue publication is 4players.de however the overall score is back in the green since 2 more positive reviews have popped up.. it's sitting at a 76 which i think is too low, it should be more around 85. But whatevs. (have already played it on my friend's in handheld mode but I have resisted buying as I was waiting for the physical to come from O/S to aussie).
I bought it. The graphics are great but every single car is a nightmare to steer. All twitchy with brutal oversteer. No reviewers are mentioning this but look at all the review videos of this game. You can see the horrible steering in action

@@videsjlv i 2nd this. i drive worse when i use the joycons vs the pro controller cuz the sticks on the pro has more play so you can do incremental turns whereas the joycons play is very short so the turns end up being jolty

The f1 games have decently accurate tracks too and I think the physics engine is about the same for those
Maybe the real reason they're so wide is because they're just upgraded versions of what's in grid 2 and instead of redoing the tracks to be accurate they left em as is
It's just a killer for me because I know those tracks so well besides algarve
Totally agree with your review. It's as close to a 10/10 racing game for the Switch as we could dream of. If the multiplayer lives up to expectation I don't see any reason it shouldn't get a top score :)
Yea it will defo be scored up if the multiplayer 'works'
Vroom 🏎
wooooooosh!
THE AI DRIVE LIKE SHIT WE NEED AN UPDATE ALREADY CRICKETS ARE CHIRPING
Give it a chance! Only been out a week or so and I'm sure they are hard at work on patches.
SwitchedOn it’s been a month! Came out sept 19th
Fair points Max! I thought it looked great in handheld tbf. What mode were you playing in - graphics or energy saver?
Wow totally shocked that the same game they shitted on in the xbox and ps, they say it’s awesome on the switch 🤔 someone please explain this
Was it? Always thought it reviewed well. Its a super impressive port on Switch anyways.
And another game goes on the wish list
Ha! How long is that list?
SwitchedOn 39 games and I only need $1400 to pay for them all! Thanks for your reply and keep up the reviews!!
grid autosport juegazo
i dont know how long its gonna take,, but the joycons are twitchy,,,.. hard to control :(
I turned off all the helpers except for ABS. It was like night and day for the controls.
@@Zsokorad me too. Joycons are fine
I'd always play with pro controller over joy cons if you can.
@@SwitchedOn well im getting used to it now,, every assist off except abs
I love it, such addiction i got last time while playing zelda botw
Yea I think the short races help to have 'just one more go' :)
Last
This isn't even a maybe, it's a must have.. we have to support this sort of switch endeavour. However, I'm going for the physical :) Can't believe one moronic metacritic reviewer dragged the final score into "mediocre" range. Idiots. Hopefully more publications give it much deserved higher ratings to bring it back into the green.
I don't know what you (they) couldn't like about it? Crazy!
It's too arcade.
It's on the fucking Switch with no analogue controls. What are you expecting? Asseto Corsa? Moronic comment.
You can tweak loads of settings to make it less arcadey. Have you checked the driving model option? You may be on full arcade?
It's made by CodeMaster. What do you expect?
I bought it. The graphics are great but every single car is a nightmare to steer. All twitchy with brutal oversteer. No reviewers are mentioning this but look at all the review videos of this game. You can see the horrible steering in action
are u adjusting your suspension and ride height? do the lowest ride height and the stiffest suspension. Also adjust your brakes. worked for me
Make sure u are playing in performance mode as it’s easier to play. Otherwise I really don’t know what u talking about I find it awesome to control. also try handling in arcade mode.
Get a pro controller
Hmmm controls were fine for me - try adjusting some of the difficulty/help until you get a feel for the handling then you can start to lower them down.
@@videsjlv i 2nd this. i drive worse when i use the joycons vs the pro controller cuz the sticks on the pro has more play so you can do incremental turns whereas the joycons play is very short so the turns end up being jolty
It runs on switch but not on android fuck this shit!
