GRID Autosport Solves One of The Biggest Issues On Nintendo Switch

  • GRID Autosport is out next week for the Nintendo Switch and brings another simulation racing game to the system. This time though it looks like Feral Interactive figured out how to get around the digital triggers on the Switch controllers by allowing you to use the analog buttons on the Gamecube controller. This would be the first time a racing game added in native support for the Gamecube controller to this extent for accelerating and braking in a simulation racing game on the Switch and I hope other developers do the same thing going forward.

    I don't own a GC controller, and I'd probably be fine with mapping to the right analog stick(maybe), but the fact that the devs put a performance/quality mode switch and that degree of GC controller support is super respect-worthy, and I'm sold on the game.

      I still have a Gamecube that I use regularly (I have a GC Video HDMI adapter and SD Media Launcher so I can do virtually anything with it). @Robert Siegfried I think we're all aware that it's a last gen game. You're not breaking any news there. You do realize that GT and Forza were also on LAST GEN, right? All I'm saying is that this game is of that kind of quality and is far better than any racer on Switch thus far.

    • @John6-40
      @John6-40 5 лет назад +19

      @Robert Siegfried I didn't mean that it's like GT and Forza due to being exclusive to Switch. I'm just saying it's a high quality game, even if it is last gen. It's just a well crafted game, and - sadly - the selection of realistic racers on Switch was pathetic to this point. So getting something that is akin to GTA 6 on PS3 is a huge upgrade. I can be happy about getting it while simultaneously being unhappy with our racing game selection (and 3rd party support in general).

      you have to look at it from nintendo's perspective. the joycon pair is the primary controller. to the greatest extent possible, they want the pro controller to have the same features and no more. the pro controller doesn't have analog triggers because the joycon don't have analog triggers. the joycon probably don't have analog triggers in order to keep the cost down; using two controllers instead of one requires twice as many of a lot of components. everything is driven by the joycon.

    • @renovatiovr
      @renovatiovr 5 лет назад +13

      @@sirmoonslosthismind That is such a flawed logic. First of all, Pro controller is a premium level extension of Switch and that is reflected in the price. It is supposed to be better than the stock joycons that you get. It is even in the name, "Pro". It is supposed to have all the main features that just having Switch alone would not get you. Secondly, it costs pennies for Nintendo to produce a Pro Controller. It is not like they are struggling to keep it profitable. The overprice on that thing is enormous. The pro controller is just a more comfortable form factor for that setup. It sucks because Mario Kart is one of their biggest selling games and they didn't factor that in the ability to feather the brake and throttle into their design for the controllers.

Analog triggers would break pretty easily and would make the controller bigger, more expensive to manufacture, and less ergonomic than they already are for both double and single use. It made sense not to have analog triggers cause the console is portable. Also, having quality and performance modes as well as a battery saver mode goes that much further to producing a quality Switch port.

    Loving this and loving the fact they included support for analog triggers (at least for the GC controller). I think you were spot on though if they could support analog triggers on all controllers that connect to the Switch - that'd be the ideal scenario. I hope Nintendo will just release new joy-cons with analog triggers... that way we can have the sim-racing genre come to the Switch. It's silly that they excluded analog triggers altogether.

    I know the Pro Controller is not quite the correct controller for sim racing mostly because of feathering or braking, but it's worth mentioning that the Pro Controller uses the gyroscope so you can use motion control for precise steering, not to mention using the C-stick for partial throttling/braking, even if it's an unpopular opinion. Of course you can also adjust the sensitivity and linear options of the GameCube, but I'm more of an motion control driver than directional-stick driver.

    I think for supporting the analog triggers on the 8BitDo controller you're talking about, they'll have to chat with them (8BitDo) directly. From what I've seen, the controller doesn't send anything more than a ON/OFF to the host and it'll probably need some work on the firmware (maybe it'll show up as a GameCube controller to the console?) for changing the trigger's behaviour internally.

  • @Rodox2k10
    @Rodox2k10 5 лет назад +1

    I'm afraid there's no way the game could be able to just "figure out" whether the player's controller has shoulder buttons that travel. The only way would be to let the game know the controller ID (or hardware ID) and cross that information with a database fed by the developer in order to enable progressive throttling.
    What that means is that every single controller has to go through Feral's testing, which will update the game as more controllers are added in on the list. Yeah it sucks, but that's the only way to go around the Switch controller's shoulder button limitations.

    • @sirmoonslosthismind
      @sirmoonslosthismind 5 лет назад +1

      it's very unlikely that nintendo gives developers that level of access anyway. this is between the controller and the driver. the nintendo switch has three drivers, for joycon, pro controllers, and gamecube controllers. if your third-party controller claims to be a pro controller, it's going to act like a pro controller, including digital triggers.

  • @ColpoRosso

    Sometimes I play more sim car games on the keyboard, just to go old school. Or even on old controllers with no analogue triggers, like the saturn one, and if you go fully manual gears you'll have a lot of fun and you'll get control over the throttle.
    Having said that, is it so weird for a game on switch to support analogue triggers? I mean, just because the main controllers do not have analogue triggers, doesn't mean that the Switch in itself doesn't support that kind of input, as the support for gamecube triggers clearly shows.

      it's almost certainly impossible for feral to do what you and spawnwave are asking. the nintendo switch has drivers for three kinds of controllers -- joycon, pro controllers, and gamecube controllers. if your third-party peripheral claims to be a pro controller, it's going to act like a pro controller. if it claims to be a gamecube controller, it's going to act like a gamecube controller. if it claims to be something else, the console will reject it and the game will never see it.

      PIXELFLUX. First, OPTIONS are always good, no matter what your small brain thinks. If you want to play with a mouse, NO ONE is forcing you to use a controller.
      Second, a controller is quite comfortable for couch gaming in your living room or in bed, as opposed to gaming while sitting in front of a desk.
      Third, you can use a modern controller with a gyro like those of the PS4 and Switch and use it with motion aiming, which is as good as a mouse if not better, but that depends on who is playing

    Imo, this looks like a band aid solution to the problem when comparing what the competition offer but it's a legitimate one like banging your fuel tank on a Friday after the fuel pump motor Austin Beaver itself during your drive home. Of course, it fixes the issue but it shouldn't be gone ignored. Maybe Nintendo can convince Codemasters to port more of their games such as Dirt or F1 Race Stars and also EA/FireMonkey to port Real Racing 3. unless third parties can get their controller seen as gamecube controllers, i don't think that support for analogue trigger will be added. im not sure if there is any way to have a wireless controller be seen as a gamecube controller using bluetooth. it'd have to be a reciever like the wave bird has, and connected to the gamcube controller adapter.
