    Oh, glad you cleared that up! When the Scott's company found a way to eliminate clover from their grass seed formula, they had to convince the public that clover was bad for lawns. So by the 1960's, after an aggressive ad campaign, people identified clover as a weed. Knowledgeable gardeners know, however, that though a clover free lawn may look pretty, clover is actually beneficial, and much easier to maintain.

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  8 лет назад +6

      once again, I don't care if it's beneficial... it's an eyesore. And I've never called myself a "gardener" - I'm a lawn care nut - meaning I like a pristine, weed free lawn. That's what this channel is about. If you don't like or appreciate that, there are tons of great gardening channels you can watch and you can call them names if you like. Or, what I really recommend you do, is make your own vids, telling the world how great a lawn full of clover actually is - I'll be your first subscriber and I'll be respectful enough not to call you names.

      I don’t care that much for the clover, but I do think of the bees. Don’t seem to see near as many as I did growing up.
      Then again, I am not playing in the yard as much either. I am outside a lot. It does seem to be a lot less bees than years past.
      Carpenter bees I am not so sure about.

I know bee population needs help. I only spot spray weeds. Works for me. Thank you for the tips from your videos.

    Another good home based surfactant is Dawn dishwashing liquid. It cuts thru some of the oils that some broad leaved weeds have for protecting the leaves from our herbicides. This oil can also slow evapotranspiration on hot days. Both the shampoo and Dawn make a good herbicide work much better.

    Upthumbed only for the advice and execution of sprayer use and chemistry logic, but I'll use that to deal with every other thing except clover. I've got a patch that goes to flower almost every week, while surrounding grass is still not so high as to need mowing 2.5" or so. Point is it's helpful to support bees, goes along with other pollinator-friendly plants I've got going here. Plus it looks great, and the mowed-off leaves are a huge nitrogen additive to the whole lawn.

    I actually plant clover in my backyard for the dogs. I have two Golden Retrievers and their urine kills my backyard grass instantly, so I noticed that the clover is unaffected and I researched it and decided to plant more clover. I reseeded the grass and applied clover to the bare spots, covered with peat moss lightly and watered twice a day for 2 weeks. The grass and clover both came in and the clover filled in the former dead spots and there isn't any more bare soil. My goal was to have a nice green place for the dogs to play and do their business and this worked for me. The clover looks nice after a 4' mowing and it feels soft when walked on. We have a sidewalk that supports most foot traffic but the dogs run all over and their urine doesn't seem to affect the white clover I planted. At $11 a pound, it wasn't expensive as 1lb goes a long way (1200 sq ft back yard)...

      Fix.....don't let dogs urinate on your lawn!! Very unhygienic and you can't enjoy your lawn, walking dog pee into the house.....touching the grass with your hands. If you have to let the dogs use your lawn as their toilet......segregate just one area they can use......Gross!!

      finally, someone with a modicum of common sense!!!!! this man's lawn is horrifyingly barren and empty! a hallmark of the damage down by widespread chemical pesticide use! If you want a clover with some pizzaz look for crimson clover seeds. They're frequently sold in seed mixes for sprouting. The flowers are a brilliant crimson red! its the most beautiful color I've ever seen on a clover! I suggest finding a spot to put a few pots of zinnias while you're at it, they're very low maintenance and come in a variety of sizes and colors. I'm trying out Peppermint Stick and Sombrero this year but usually I use "cut and come again", "dwarf pumilla" and "giant cactus." Last year I tried out a giant show zinnia called "purple prince." Next year I plan to try the shocking green "Envy."

    Good vid ans I love your Toro Mower but I have to point out some issues,
    1* WEAR A MASK/ RESPIRATOR if you can small the fragrance of the baby shampoo then you are also breathing in the chemicals you used on your clover, wetting agents also work as an absorbing agent for your skin and lungs
    2* Fine mist spraying is perfect for clover application but depending on the active ingredient of the product used you just contaminated your shoes and clothes, Surfactant's work for and against you.
    I have worked on golf courses for 7 + years and know 1st hand the dangers of improper precautions for even then simplest jobs

      Two dogs lawncare I am all for wearing the proper and suggested PPE. I sprayed for TruGreen for 15 years. These are minimal risk pesticides and the PPE is long sleeves, long pants, rubber gloves, boots (these are my water proof spray boots) and eye protection. That is what is listed on the label and is what I followed. All of my spray clothes get hand washed by me in my slop sink.

    I love clover and actually prefer a lawn with clover over a completely uniform grass lawn. I have several different types of clover, including white clover, red clover, and mini clover...and am I'm trying to get a little ornamental peanut established too. Clover and ornamental peanut, aka Perennial Peanut, use less water than grass, and are nitrogen fixing plants, so don't require fertilizer. Mini Clover and Perennial Peanut do not get very tall, so can be mowed less often, or not at all. Plus they have pretty flowers that attract bees. Oh, by the way, the finest mist possible that you recommend in the video for spraying, while I agree is likely the most effective at saturating the plant, is also the most prone to drifting in the wind. You had mentioned that the weedkiller smelled great after you added the baby shampoo and fine mist sprayed it on the clover, so that means you were likely breathing in little tiny micro-droplets of the spray, which I don't believe would be considered a best practice :-)

  • @Robin-ci2kx
    @Robin-ci2kx 4 года назад +3

    Actually clover is a good thing to have in your lawn; it crowds out actual weeds (before the invention of weed killers all lawn owners wanted and planted clover for it's ability to put nitrogen into the soil and it was the chemical companies who couldn't figure out how to kill broadleaf weeds without killing beneficial clover, too, that decided to claim clover was an undesireable weed so they could sell their product) like dandelions and crabgrass, produces wonderful food for the bees and other beneficial insects, puts a huge amount of the right kind of nitrogen into your soil without a penny out of your pocket, and holds up much better to drought and heat than lawn grasses. Plus the flowers are pretty and when you cut it along with your grass with a mulching lawnmower it feeds all the beneficial microbes in your soil which makes for a healthy turf over time. What you take out in lawn clippings you leave you put back in as mulch. And for those who claim it leaves piles of unsightly clumps of grass clippings all over, well I have an extremely by-the-book tidy normal-lawn guy next door who doesn't even know I never ever collect my grass in a bag (shh, don't tell him- he'd have a heart attack!) All he knows and wonders at is that even though he never sees me toiling endlessly over my yard it looks greener most of the time than his which he is always busy fiddling with. he doesn't ask and I don't mention it. I'll tell him when he asks...

    That's funny, I was going to suggest to use dish soap but baby shampoo works too. My go to weed killer to wipe out everything I don't want to grow is straight Vinegar with 1/4 cup salt and 2 tsp of dish soap to every gallon of vinegar. Now it does kill everything but you have to get it to the roots or you only kill the surface. If you want to plant later in the spot where you used salt, you have to replace the soil because it takes a long time to go away. On the flip side, my pup LOVES the clover and pure Rye grass, but not enough sun to grow with our shade trees. It's soft on his little belly to lay with his legs kicked out behind him. But that's just us. We never use any chemicals of any kind on our lawn and put down Milorganite about once a month to fertilizer the best weeds Mother Nature blew onto our property. Really enjoy your videos even though we'll never have amazing grass like yours. I learned about Milorganite from your video's...so thank you.

    it attracts butterflies birds and life, it is a wonderful addition to a yardscape, people are obsessed with perfection yet have no idea what perfection is, In Nature, Life happens, things grow and we try and take some control.

      Actually a weed is defined as any plant growing in competition with the desired plant. So in this case, if the desired plant is grass then yes Clover would be a weed. It's the same concept as field corn being a weed in a soybean field.

    After getting rid of 95 % of the creeping charlie in my lawn, I'll take the clover that has begun growing in its place. The little white heads are a much better sight than the bare ground the creeping charlie leaves as it takes over the lawn. How did I do it? I got on my hands and knees and pulled it out working in the shady areas when the weather was hot and then in the sunny areas on cooler days. About 1/2 an hour a day and my27,000 square feet was basically rid of charlie in about a month. Now I still pull out the vine- like weed the day before I mowsi it doesn?t gr\et cuhg uo\; ki the ml
