[How to KILL WEEDS] in Your Lawn WITHOUT KILLING the GRASS
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 31 май 2020
- How to kill weeds in your lawn without killing the grass is a question commonly asked by lawn care enthusiasts. Weed control can be a full time job and really takes the fun out of your lawn care program. The weed control that I like best doesn't involve a weed spray or chemical like spectracide, roundup or image weed killer. The best long term weed control is to grow a healthy lawn and mow it regularly at the correct height for your grass type. This creates a natural weed control because the tight turf creates a situation where weeds have trouble competing with the lawn for the resources they need to grow.
The best way to immediately get rid of weeds without killing the grass in your lawn is to simply pull the weeds manually. That said, chemicals can help initially kill broadleaf weeds and other lawn problems like crabgrass.
Options for chemical weed control fall into 2 categories for application; liquid or granular. Both types of weed control products have their pros and cons. Liquid weed control products like Image weed killer or roundup work very quickly to kill weeds. The downside is that they are also much more likely to damage or even kill the grass which is what we don't want. I wouldn't use roundup on weeds within your lawn because it's a very powerful herbicide which WILL damage any grass near the weed being sprayed. Keep roundup for ornamental beds weeds growing in places like your sidewalk. Image weed killer works great for tough weeds like nutsedge but even it is hard on the nearby grass.
Granular products like Spectracide weed control work slower than the liquid versions but it is also much safer for the lawn. When it comes to herbicides you want to use as little as necessary to kill the weeds and nothing else. Granular weed control like Spectracide also contains Dithiopyr which is a pre-emergent to prevent new weeds from growing back once they're gone. Remember all we're using Spectracide for is to buy us time to grow a healthy lawn.

Just bought my first house and never knew how much work my dad put in to make the lawn look perfect. Thanks for all the info I’m excited to get started
It's a lot of fun Snack Pack! Enjoy the journey!
Same here. Weeding, pruning, mowing, planting, etc. so time consuming. I have about an acre of land too!
@rsvpevents6780 an acre is a lot to take care of for sure!
I also just bought my first home back in October and you ain't kidding haha. I have been working on my lawn all summer and it's finally almost to the point where I'm happy with it. I have some experience in landscaping and that spectracide works great. I would always recommend it for customers who have a lot of weeds in their yards.
Right? My dad mowed our lawn which wrapped around the whole loop of the street we lived on. Incredible as I get closer to his age remembering how much work he put into it! 🥰
Thank you Ron! 3 years later spring 2023 Pacific Northwest. I applied Spectracide Weed Stop Granules last fall my lawn is now dark green very healthy and no dandelions to be seen!
Awesome! Happy to help! 🎉😎
I’ve been following your channel and taking your advice in a lot of videos. Lawn is finally starting to look decent (new construction hybrid Bermuda in NC). Keep these awesome videos coming, love how you present the info in an easy to understand straight forward manner. Even my wife finds it interesting. Keep it up!!!
Thanks so much putman201.I'm glad that you and the Mrs are finding the content useful and entertaining. There's nothing like seeing the benefits of your hard work. Glad that your lawn is doing well. Appreciate you watching the content. 😎👍
This is *exactly* what I needed, and I didn't have to wade through pointless fluff at the start of the video. Thank you!
Glad that it was useful Jori. I try to keep my videos short at to the point. If you'd like to learn about another option for killing weeds, check out this video: ruclips.net/video/nzkpNlsKIro/видео.html Even shorter than the one you just watched. Appreciate you chiming in. 👍😎
@@RonHenry Oh my gosh, you responded. And instantly. I feel special :) Based on your video, I just ordered Spectracide for my lawn, Roundup for the weeds in the cracks in the concrete, and a mini broadcast spreader. I hear that the foxtails in my area are going to be really hard to defeat, but at least I'm starting to take action, and we'll see how it goes. I've got at least two other kinds of weeds too.
@@jorilindley It sounds like you're definitely on the right track Jori. Getting the weeds knocked back is definitely a process so I'd start with what you have and see if we need something stronger for the foxtail issue. Thanks so much for watching! Let me know if I can help with anything else. :-)

Thanks for making the world a more beautiful place to be. Some people look at things like it's my job instead of looking at the big picture. As a lawn care person I look at it the opposite way. When I pull up on a lawn it's my personal goal to make it the nicest lawn on the block
I agree Kevin. I love taking pride in creating the best lawn possible. There's always something that could be better which is part of what makes it so much fun. Thanks for watching.
Another great video Ron. Your recommendations regarding selective and non-selective herbicides are great. I see some of the questions and responses you're getting are specific to different geographical areas. Perhaps helpful to recommend to the audience to contact their local ag extension office for help in identifying proper timing of when to apply specific products. I've found the local Master Gardeners on staff are very helpful and can also make product recommendations for my area.
Great point Blake. Quite often the recommendations are on the product labels but I can definitely see how local knowledge would help you make more effective herbicide applications. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thanks Tim! I'm honored that you're looking at the content all the way from South Australia 🇦🇺 . I'll try to do more comparison videos on grasses. I have an update that I'm doing on my Arden 15 overseeding project that I'll be releasing soon. What kind of grass is common in your area? 😎👍
Ron Henry thanks Ron, very similar to you with couch ( Bermuda) kikuyu ( caterpillar) and I have over seeded my couch with perennial rye for the first time.also your street looks amazing.
Thanks sir! It's so cool that you on the other side of the world you guys are using similar grasses. Do you access to the same products that we have in the US? (Milorganite, etc) or are there Australian alternatives that are more common?
Thank you Ron for a very informative video! I wished I would've watched this before applying Spectracide weed stop granules. The bag itself does not instruct recommended temperatures for when to apply and I applied it when it was 99 degrees Fahrenheit. O'well, I guess I have to wait for result to see if I have to re spread on better temperatures.
No problem Adrian. It will probably still work but might not get as good a result as you might have gotten. Spectracide is great stuff so it shouldn't damage the lawn. Thanks for watching the content. I really appreciate the support. Let me know if I can help with anything else. 👍😎
Thanks so much. Tried it my self and results where amazing. I planting new grass and my weed to grass ratio was 50% :50%. It didn’t kill the crab grass but I can just pull those out easy. Like you say in the video just follow the instructions on the bag and can’t go wrong, thanks again. I think this is probably the easiest way to get rid of weeds.
Glad it was useful. Thanks for watching.

☀️ Nice! I’m a fan of Spectracide, too! Great for spot treating. Kills crabgrass and nutsedge, too. ☀️
It's a great product Sunny. It provides good value for money. There are better products out there (Prodamine and Dimension) but they're far, far more expensive. Spectracide gets the job done at a reasonable price.

Hi Ron. This is the second video that I'm watching. I gave a thumbs up and hit the subscribe button from the first video. Great content and love the delivery. I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and the weeds were out in force this year. I like the information you provided and for full on lawn care and tackling the weeds, I'm going to try the third product you recommended. I'll see if I can get it from Home Depot first and if not, then Amazon. I was thinking to apply it in the spring; which the time they recommend putting down fertilizer. We do have fertilizer that is laid in the fall so to nourish the lawn through the winter and then early spring we fertilize again. So, what do you think? Thanks again and take care.
Hi Stacey. You should hopefully be able to find the products shown at your local Home Depot. They're fairly common. Something else you may want to consider is pre-emergent. It's a special herbicide that's applied twice per year (spring and fall) that prevents the weeds from germinating in the first place. I have a video here that talks about different options and how to use it. ruclips.net/video/p1sazlEXAXc/видео.html Hope this helps. Really appreciate you watching. Thanks for watching the support.
Looks phenomenal!

Hey Ron, first I want to say great channel!! Perfect information for lawn care rookies like myself! I have a question, I planted blackjack bermuda seed late March, its coming in decent but I have a lot of weeds. What is your opinion on getting rid of weeds in the lawn for new grass? Will it damage immature bermuda?
Heya Julian. Given that you've recently made the investment in planting new Bermuda, I'd do my best to keep herbicides off the turf. Once the new grass is fully established, you can use Spectracide but until then, I'd just weed manually. I know it's a huge pain, but it's the safest option for the turf. It's what I did for my lawn when I overseeded. Assuming you don't already have one, grab one of those weeding tools from your local Home Depot or on Amazon: amzn.to/3fdeCqG Thanks so much for the kind words about the channel. Glad that you find the content helpful. Be sure to let me know if I can help with anything. Can message me here or ron@ron-henry.com

Great video Ron ! Very informative Thank you. After I control my weed in my entire lawn what can I do to get my lawn back to it’s color. I have discoloration or dried patches. Can I treat that simultaneously when killing weed ? Should I apply weed feed instead?Or after weed control? Thank you !
Hi Mgz_ Once you kill the weeds, just start mowing your lawn regularly. That will get rid of the dead weeds and also stimulate new growth in the grass. If you'd like a good starter fertilizer for a recovering lawn, this is a great choice: golfcourselawn.store/products/12-12-12-starter-fertilizer-with-3-iron-and-bio-nite™-granular-lawn-fertilizer After the fertilizer application, just mow, mow and mow some more. This is great!! I just moved into a fixer upper and just recently tilled my lawn and re-seeded it and all the grass is growing but so are the weeds and its nowhere near long enough to mow the lawn yet, I wanted a way to kill the weeds endnote kill the grass thank you.
So happy that you found it useful Owens Home. What you experienced is pretty common. Bare soil mixed with sunlight is great for growing grass but unfortunately also great for weeds. You can spot treat them while you wait for the lawn to get fully established. I'd go light on any herbicides until you're confident the grass is in great shape. Let me know if I can help with anything else. I also have a recent video covering another herbicide option: ruclips.net/video/nzkpNlsKIro/видео.html Appreciate you watching sir.
Great video, Ron! I’ve recently used Image on my lawn as I’m just getting a good Bermuda lawn established. I’ve noticed some discoloration as you noted in the video. I’m curious how long this discoloration will last? Is this something I can mitigate with proper fertilization? Thanks. Take care!
Heya Bailey. It will last about 1 week assuming that your turf is healthy. I hate that particular side effect of Image but the product really does work great against nutsedge. The big thing is to not over apply the product. Literally all you need is one pass over the nutsedge. No need to soak the area. Using a liquid fertilizer will probably help the lawn recover a bit faster. Granular takes longer to break down so by the time it starts working your turf will like have recovered anyways. A good liquid option is this: amzn.to/2WRaPrI It's very similar to Brandt Supreme Green product I apply in this video: ruclips.net/video/uedc-v-lnbY/видео.html Let me know if I can help with anything else! 😎👍

Take care Ron, all the best
Love the video! How soon can you put down grass seed after applying Weed Stop?
The granular with pre-emergent in it? I'd wait 4 months for the best possible result Kevin. You can try before then, but don't be surprised if you don't get great germination.
Hi Ron. I laid down a couple bags of spectracide Recently in my lawn to help with a crabgrass problem. The bag mentioned not being able to lay grass seed for 10 weeks. How soon have you tried to plant grass seed after using Spectracide. Your videos are really helpful. Thanks a lot!
Heya Ryan. I would really wait the 10 weeks on the grass seed. Depending on which type of grass seed you're putting down it probably represents several hundred dollars. If you spread it before the 10 weeks is up, you'll likely get some germination but not as good as if you'd waited. If you want to still give it a go, I'd recommend doing a really good aeration of the lawn prior to spreading the seed. This will damage the pre-emergent barrier making it less effective against preventing germination. Does that make sense?
That does make sense. I bought some Arden 15 seeds that I hoped to plant this year but I think 10 weeks probably takes me completely out of season for growing new grass. Is there anything that you recommend that I can do in the meantime that might be helpful for growing new grass using seed next year?
Hi Ryan, I'd work on getting the soil as healthy as possible. So do a soil test assuming you haven't as yet and make the amendments to get the soil into primo shape. www.mysoiltesting.com/shop?aff=11 Again, you *can* overseed this year but I'd be sure to aerate heavily before doing so in order to make the pre emergent less effective. 👍😎

Great video, Ron. Quick question: I noticed that Spectracide Weedstop has a concentrated liquid formula as well as a hose sprayer version. Are these acceptable alternatives like the granular version, or do they have the same downsides as the liquid agents you discuss?
Hi Arie. Yes, the liquid concentrates work well while not having to apply to wet grass like the granular. If getting rid of existing weeds is your main goal, I'd go with liquid vs granular. An alternative to Spectracide that's professional strength is this product: golfcourselawn.store/products/broadleaf-weed-control-triad-select-3-way-herbicide Hope this helps.
Hi Ron,
There are so many products being discussed, not sure where to begin. We live in Florida, we have floritam grass, overall looks good, however, I'm noticing clover and crabgrass in many areas, what do I start with to kill the unwanted weeds and what do I maintain it with to keep it healthy and weeds out. Thank you.
Thanks for this informational video! It is appreciated! Btw. Beautiful lawn!!
P.S. I have an huge area on my driveway in the backyard that has been taken over by all different types of weeds (even those prickly ones) after the tree next door at a rental until has been cut down last year. This year the weeds have spread almost the entire width and I am about to use a weed puller and dig them up completely. I was gonna use a weed killer that last up to a year, but I don't want birds and squirrels to become sick and die from coming in contact with the area, so I was thinking of going the homemade vinegar and soap method and then pin down a heavy duty landscape weed barrier to hopefully help keep them from regrowing. Any tips at how to kill these off permanently? Or do you think because the tree stump is still there, the weeds will just continue to return every season?
Glad you enjoyed it!

Good video, I've been taking care of my yard for over 35 years, and all of your statements were right on.
I would also recommend against relying on Scott's Bonus s Weed and Feeed. It doesn't work and it's expensive. Years ago it did, but they keep weakening the fertilizer and weakening the weed killer. And so you have to use twice as much but not all at once or it'll kill the grass
Appreciate you chiming in Kathy. Thanks for the feedback.
When I moved in to my house I had a full clover lawn and I actually loved it... Over a few years my lawn has become ALL other weeds that grow knee high within two days... 😭 I just want my clover lawn back!
Hi Lauren. Unfortunately, I can't tell you have to grow clover. It's tough to pick the weeds you grow in your lawn. The issue you'll run into is any herbicide that will be effective against the other weeds is likely to also harm clover too. I appreciate you watching. Let me know if I can help with anything.
@@RonHenry Thank you! I think I'll just murder the whole lawn and hope thr clovers take over again. I read they can br pretty stubborn! Or ill just have a dead lawn this summer and grow some grass next year like an adult. 🤣
Best comment ever. :-) Well if you want a good option for eliminating the weeds in liquid form, check this out: ruclips.net/video/nzkpNlsKIro/видео.html
Brother that is a gorgeous lawn, well done.
Wish I had neighbors like you. Nah I got idiots that Like to park their cars in the yard till it kills their grass. This brings down not only their property value, but mine as well.
Again, great job dude.
As you do a great job with your lawn, your neighbors may start taking notice. Appreciate you watching.
@@RonHenry Yeah I get compliments from the good ones. I try to inspire. Sadly my hood is going south. Just time to move I guess. Just waiting for things to settle down inflation wise, if it ever does.
I subscribed. Good info you're putting out and to the point.
Grass is looking very green👍👍
Thanks sir! It’s starting to get there! 😎 This heat is helping.
Great information. Subscribed! Came to you from a recommendation from Princess Cut Lawn Care.

Thank you for sharing 🤗
You are so welcome Catherine. Thanks for watching!
Sounds like a good product. I have weeds creeping in from an area where it's just dirt and weeds
It does work well and is available at a relatively low price.
