I just did a lawn renovation. My lawn was 26 yrs old and needed redone. I killed the lawn first with round up. And left it almost a month to make sure it was dead. I then rented a sod cutter and removed the existing sod base and hauled it away. The bare ground was as clean as whistle and no further weeds or grass appeared over the next week. I had a tiller rented as well and tilled up the base so the new seed would have a good base to attach to. I added one tandem load of top soil from the same company that I rented the sod cutter, tiller, and roller from. We spread out the soil and noticed some dead grass pieces in the top soil of which my experienced landscaping help had never seen. We pulled out most of what we could out of this new top soil. The lawn was spread out and rolled a starter fertilizer was laid down and mixed in along with Scott’s turf builder sunny mix/ bluegrass with water tech coating as we are going through a drought. The seed performed as expended and appeared evenly in about 10 days. Everything seemed to be going great. Then all these bladed like weeds stared appearing. I looked it up and it was crab grass. Apparently I purchased contaminated soil. As I now have more weeds than I did with the old lawn. I will have to have this bad soil removed and start over as my goal was to be starting with nice clean slate of grass and not a mess of weeds. My neighbour purchased the same top soil from the same company and he now also has to redo his lawn as he has the exact same crab grass weeds.

Drive label states not for use on St. Augustine grass. That's what I have, my whole yard and all my neighbors have St Augustine grass. So...what is going to work on Crab grass in Sta Augustine?
My lawn had crab, bahia, and dallis, but all were able to be pulled up, root and all. Some weeds snap off when you pull, despite your best efforts so you can't pull the root out. But these pull great. Over time, this stuff is all but gone because my St Augustine filled in the gaps they left. These are very satisfying to pull!
Thanks, nice video. Great explanation for life cycle of crab grass. I try to use organic lawncare methods and I don't worry too much about weeds. One organic alternative for prevention is to have a thick, healthy lawn that crowds out the crab grass as much as possible. Your lawn is so thick that I do not think you need to put the preemergent.
I overseeded last fall and this spring. Even used the Sunday lawn Care plan. Lawn was very full and looked fantastic! I definitely had the best looking lawn all summer. Then I still got hit hard with crabgrass this year. It's taking over and I have no clue what to do aside from ripping out the entire lawn.
LCN, did I screw up or what? I had an acre of trees, stumps and brush cleared, leveled the soil out as much as possible, started a new lawn seed growth going and I think the mold from last winter killed the lawn. So I started over, but now the killer crab grass and weeds has dominated the lawn. Didn't know I was mowing the seed back into the lawn. Lesson learned. I'll give it a go this time as to controlling the crab grass and get this lawn going again. Much appreciated on the experience you share with us. I have almost 2 acres of lawn and I just keep my eyes open for crab grass while I mow with my walk behind mower. Once I determine where I have issues I take my heavy claw garden digging tool and dig it out roots and everything and toss them in my wheelbarrow. When I get a full load I dump them in the woods behind my home. I like to sprinkle some grass seed into the bare spots left by the weeds to help fill in those areas afterwards. It’s a lot of work but it keeps the amount of weeds low from year to year and I’m not dumping chemicals on my lawn.
Crabgrass always seem to effect my dad's lawn and not our neighbors. I friggin' hate crab grass with a passion. You mow your lawn and by that SAME NIGHT, you can see that the crabgrass is already taller than the surrounding area. Thank you very much for this video.

Hi Lawn Care Nut Any chance you could elaborate a little more or make a short video on the clumping fescue? I would love to rid my lawn of this. Thanks Steve
Depending on how much you have, you can use full strength Roundup in a small needle glue or oiler bottle that can be purchased to Hobby Stores. You can put one drop on each blade, and it will kill it. Fescue is really a problem grass unless you have a horse pasture. Obviously this one blade at a time is tedious but it is selective, and does work if you have patience and not too much Fescue. If you have a lot, you might consider killing it all with Roundup, and then replacing the sod.
AD. you have to kill it with Roundup through the leaf or blade. If you dig it out first there is not enough plant left to kill, and it will come back through the roots remaining in the ground.

Great video. As a heads up, the Lesco Pre-M isn't available everywhere and I believe Home Depot only sells it in the southern markets. I tried ordering that this past year but they can't deliver it and it isn't in any stores around here. Instead I was able to get a Lesco Pre-M through John Deere landscaping.
Ok, at 3:30 you talk about a different type of grassy weed, specifically a clumping type tall fescue. I think I have some of that in my cool MN lawn, but I KNOW I have quite a bit of Yellow or Green Foxtail. I have struggled to remove it for over a decade. What can I do to get rid of it Allyn? Maybe you can do a video on it, and other grassy weeds!
Ohhh my lawn has tons of it...moved in last year and neighboors say previous owners have done nothing with lawn since house was there, since 1974.....it looks somewhat better now since I've been working on it, but now along with dandelions, I've got crabgrass lol.....gotta get me that pre-emergent for next spring, thanks!
It is a good idea to buy the pre-emergent early in the spring. Once they run out of it at the store, they do not restock it until the following spring. I have had very good luck with Scott's Weed n Feed with HALTS. I buy the 15,000 square feet bag, and only use 1/3 of it at a time, wait two weeks and use another 1/3, wait two weeks and use the final 1/3.
This is the golden age of ordering online. You can order things any time of year and have them delivered to store or directly to your home or business.
I live in Houston and moved into my house about 2 years ago. Every year I manually get rid of these things, and every year they come back. The previous owner foreclosed on it and let the yard go, so I've been doing my best to repair it but it's always a battle. It goes from 20-30 degrees in Jan-Feb straight to 70-80 degrees in Feb-Mar. Hadn't heard of using a pre-emergent until this year when it was too late - had just been doing Scott's Weed 'n Feed bi-annually. Hopefully next year I can get it done right and have some semblance of a lawn.
Just got my first home and I want to have the best lawn in the neighborhood which let me to your vids. keep up the good work your super informative and fun to watch. who know lawn care could be so much fun! Thanks
Obviously this is a 3 year old video, but YT brought me here... I saw the earlier clips of Chicago and heard NWI and got all excited, as a fellow NWIndianan, just to find out your home sold. Lol. Love your videos!
You are a lawn care genious we cut it and you tell us how to grow it and to.......wait for it........DOMINATE WITH GREEN LUSCIOUSNESS! as always you make learning about turf management fun AS HELL!
We call it Quack grass. Ordinary week killer has no effect on it, and it can eventually take over the whole yard. You can spot treat it with weed-and-grass killer.
I don't understand why people like to mow their yard so low ,especially tall fescue ,that was the problem in the last yard ,mowing too low ,and not fertilizing well.. Here in California we like to do pre-emergent herbicide in February, because in March is already 70 degrees. I like to do fertilizing 1 mont before the Dimention 270. Is only a opinion.
+Cobra 03 Same here. I've seen people absolutely scalp their grass and not only is it really bad for the health of the lawn, it just looks bad. Some people don't have the first clue how to care for their lawn and to make it look great but strangely in their minds they're doing it right and everyone else is wrong!
Sadly, my neighbors do that and even the landscapers they hire do that. They scalp it down to the dirt and destroy the roots. They also like to mow across into my property too where I try to keep my St. Augustine at least 3.5 inches. They are probably like, "This lazy guy here... his grass is so tall, he must never mow it. I'll just send him a message." I guess if you can buy a riding mower and a trailer, you're all of a sudden a "landscaper" lol. Then they mow it down to the dirt and kill the grass. smh. Others are just too lazy to mow so they think if they mow it as low as possible they can wait a month before mowing it again... lol Then one of my next-door neighbors has the most epic sea of 1000's of yellow dandelions. He is a health nut who walks every morning at dawn but is too lazy to mow... huh? When my lawn is healthy and at nearly 4 inches, the dandelions can't even grow in my yard, no matter how many he has.
I gotta tell ya Mr.Lawn Care Nut you should create a classic section for this crab grass info; Near perfect delivery (language and board work.) Is there more to crabgrass that you could and probably have talked about? But of course. Trust me this is a gem.Warren at the start of the Boston Marathon in Hopkinton.
I have been following your tutorials and my lawn has improved very much. There is a Crab Grass invasion though and I am glad you made this video. I will follow instructions for next season. As always, thanks for the guidance.
I know this is a 5 year old video, but I came for Crab grass info and saw downtown Chicago.. Then heard NW IN and then saw an area that looks very familiar! Morse Place! lol I had a buddy that lived down the street. I live in Hammond. Weird Take care!
Crabgrass is the bane of my existence. Great informative video. I have a thick lawn & the lawn care company came out March 31 in central Ohio. Why am I still seeing crabgrass in my yard? It's exasperating!
Great video lost my yard a few years ago after injury, could not take care of it,now that I am better I ride twice to power seed but results are not what I wanted, If possible can you talk a little about power seeding ,it would really help Thanks Again Great Lawn
seriously... you people think you are entitled to pour poisons on your lawn to keep it green. That garbage poisons groundwater and sickens or kills beneficial organisms such as bees, worms, birds...
been working on my yard trying to get rid of this crap. I had given up trying to kill the stuff off myself and hired a local lawn care company to fertilize and treat weeds. While the fertilizing is doing decent, they haven't been able to hardly kill any crabgrass. I've had them retreat a few times and it's still not dying. The last time they hit it with quinclorac and the crabgrass turned white. After a couple weeks it started going green again. Ugh! I bought some Wipe-Out and did 3oz/gal with some dish detergent to see what that'll do. fingers crossed. I might just have to deal with crabgrass for the rest of the year and hit it hard with pre-emergent next spring.
I have been in a new house for over 5 years...no crab grass until now. But I was not able to know that the seeding stage was for crab grass. I assumed (and based on my Googlefu) it was pasture grass since the area I am in was farm land before. Now I have an army of crab grass!
By far the best video on a normally pretty dry topic. Loved the simplicity of your explanations on the whiteboard! I'm not a grass fanatic, but might become one if I keep watching your videos. Just bought a ride on mower and aerator, so I'll be watching your videos a little closer. Just trying to work out what I currently have and what to seed over the next 4 weeks! Currently in the process of trying to get rid of Crabgrass as it seems to have taken over this year!
Lawn care nut need your help!!! So out here in Sunny California we're still under drought restrictions. Looks like no one is following the restrictions but me. I use to be the envy of the neighborhood. My grass is shot. Some parts are still green but most still trying to service. Crap grass taking over, these thick patches of tall fescue growing randomly. I watered the lawn for 30mins using a oscillating sled sprinkler and noticed the area that's dying slowly, the soil/dirt is hard and I believe the water is not penetrating to the roots. The part that's green was nice and soaked. I dug up the soil and only about 1/4 of top soil was wet while the other end was great. What can I do? Should I dig up the bad spots and restart over? Should I aerate the lawn? What can I do? By the way, it's sod (tall fescue)
I would like to know the following about maintaining one's Crabgrass: How often should one water, what fertilizer to use & how often, what insecticide to use etc.? Asking for my neighbor
Good details about crabgrass.. I have 95% of them in my yard taking over whatever grass I grew last year. I’ve started pulling them out now as there is no other natural or non toxic method. There’s Going to be a lot of patches in the yard. I want to re-seed those areas making sure no more crab grass come out next year. Any tips on how to stop them from the get go? And if I should use natural fertilizers for rest of the lawn? Thanks!!
In Oklahoma, planting bermuda will strangle out all the clumping fescue, but I believe it can only be grown easily in the south. In fact it will strangle everything except crabgrass.
Great video - one of the better ones out there. But none of these videos address the biggest question. What do I do after I kill all the crabgrass?? I used a post emergent and killed massive areas of crabgrass. Now I just have dead crabgrass in my lawn. It’s way too hot to reseed right now. Will the existing turf naturally spread on its own into the dead crabgrass areas? Or did I just stop the spread and will have dead clumps in my yard the rest of summer. Not one video on RUclips actually talks about what matters. Which is how to get your turf lawn back after killing the weeds!! Someone please help out. I’m willing to dig it out and just patch it with EZ seed I guess but that’s a ton of work for how much area I need to cover.
What should I do if my yard is all crabgrass and I want a fescue lawn. I was thinking cultivate the soil which is mainly sand then put topsoil down and then grassed Thanks
Thanks for the tips! My crabgrass is rampant right now...just like you said it would be in July. I'll be sure to lay down the pre-emergent this coming spring.
Ok Allyn, I've lived in Highland Park for a year, grew up in Vegas and now am in South Texas. South Texas near the coast is by far the most uncomfortable HEAT I have ever felt. No complaining sir.. hehe
My neighbor has crab grass all over their yard. Every time I get rid of the crab grass in my yard, the seeds from their lawn blow over into my lawn and the cycle starts all over again. Now I know I need to grow my lawn thicker. My back yard is thick and green, it isn't so easy in my front lawn. We are experiencing a doubt and a 105+ degree summer right now in Texas. We are on water restriction because of it.
We had a heat wave in the Northeast and suddenly thick looking grass has sprouted all over the lawn which I had looking great. I bought weed b gon spray hose . Hopefully it kills and prevents the seeds for next year.
I have a desert landscape so DRIVE or whatever you mentioned once in 9+ minutes of video would work great for me. I want it dead, gone and back to just desert rocks!
So it's April 3rd in Chicago and not only do I need to grow my grass with seed but I have a lot of crabgrass that's brown right now and it look like it's going to try to take over my lawn what should I do
Do thistle next I work with TruGreen currently and it is one of the toughest weeds in my area to "weed out" unless I spray when they are already semi established and not mowed over.
Sharp knife and some time takes care of the large crabgrass. What might look like a giant patch is most likely 1-2 big boys. Snip at below soil and pops out
I'm in zone 7b. I've used prodiamine as a crabgrass and annual bluegrass pre-emergent on my Tifway 2 lawn for several years, with great success. The crabgrass here appears in mid- to late April, and I spray prodiamine around March 1 before the weather breaks, and again three months later. No crabgrass whatsoever, which will otherwise swallow this turf whole, _regardless_ of other cultural practices. I spray again in early September to take care of the annual bluegrass. I haven't used quinclorac in years, due to the success of prodiamine, but it was an amazing product the one time I did. Killed mature crabgrass dead as a door nail within 48 hours. But, as mentioned, it left dead brown grass scattered amongst my unaffected Bermuda, and I spent a lot of time and elbow grease raking it out by hand. Don't want to go through that routine ever again. If you start to get to the next level where you're really interested in serious lawn care, and have acquired yourself some quality sod, forget about the herbicides at Lowe's, etc. - you're wasting your time and money. These pro-level herbicides may seem expensive initially (and they are), but they are dirt cheap in the long run compared to what you're paying for the tiny amount of useless chemicals you're getting in those OTC preparations. And a bottle of quinclorac/prodiamine will last you until at least doomsday on an average-sized lawn, because of the concentration levels and extreme power they have. And don't buy brand names, either. Buy the cheapest stuff you can scare up on the interwebs that contains the pertinent chemical. Same applies for glyphosate. Never, _ever_ buy the Roundup brand of that - you've become a victim of highway robbery when you do that. Get a 40-50% concentration of it instead at Walmarks or off eBay under one of many other names.
Very well thought. Now I like to ask, I live in the northeast MA to be exact. I have a big problem with Japanese knotweed. I have tried basically everything to get rid of them that it’s hurting my budget. How do I get rid of them for good?
What’s the best and easiest way to deal with a lawn full of different weeds (including crab grass) my neighbor suggested cooking it, covering the lawn with a large tarp for a couple of weeks in the summer and cooking everything and starting from scratch.
I live in Elkhart Indiana have a lot of crabgrass how did you get rid of yours call me one 269-845-6235 I'd rather be out on the pontoon boat then worrying about my grass love to hear from you
for spot control, how about canned compressed air? Everyone says crab grass dies at the first frost, so since compressed air is cold, won't it kill the CG?
Hi, I move to America not a long time ago and from big city. Now, we have house and lawn and flower beds. It is easy to watch you moves and lean how to take care of it… Could you help me please. I saw another people tell, that baking soda kill the Crabgrass? Is it true?
k. question. can you put seed down after the "Drive" stuff? We moved into a house that was real badly neglected because the owner was sick with cancer. The whole lawn is crabgrass. We're trying to grow good grass in between, and then weed out the crabgrass once the grass is more established. If that doesn't work, we'll just till and put down sod.
The Lawn Care Nut Is there anyway to get rid of bermuda grass from st augustine without resodding the whole lawn? or keeping it from growing in zoysia cavalier grass?
I would like try Drive 75 DF, but I hear that Tenacity Herbicide is good product as well and it's powerful. It help crabgrass and grassy grass in during summer. It has post and pre emergent.

MJ Hammer Exactly I have learned when you realize you have a grabgrass infestation it is to late to buy the stuff to kill it!
"Oh wait, this is what your grass probably looks like." Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaa. I can't. That was awesome!
That was hilarious
Just got my first home and I want to have the best lawn in the neighborhood which let me to your vids. keep up the good work your super informative and fun to watch. who know lawn care could be so much fun! Thanks
+Adam Ducharme yes on seed/soil contact - very important. And you can seed and starter fert same day.
He has permanent stripes! If he did it double wide and towards the street you'd be jealous..
Obviously this is a 3 year old video, but YT brought me here... I saw the earlier clips of Chicago and heard NWI and got all excited, as a fellow NWIndianan, just to find out your home sold. Lol. Love your videos!
Congratulations on the sale of your home LCN. I hope you do not move in next door to me though.
heystarfish100 you never know! :)
+heystarfish100 LOL
@ 3.38 what weed is that.. it destroyed my lawn. You say remove it
You are a lawn care genious we cut it and you tell us how to grow it and to.......wait for it........DOMINATE WITH GREEN LUSCIOUSNESS! as always you make learning about turf management fun AS HELL!
clumping fescue, man i always thought that was crabgrass
We call it Quack grass. Ordinary week killer has no effect on it, and it can eventually take over the whole yard. You can spot treat it with weed-and-grass killer.
IN Antigo Wisconsin this year i got crap grass the 2 week in April lol SO I HIT UP RUclips TO FIND HELP U R My new go to lawn guid/help ty so much
I don't understand why people like to mow their yard so low ,especially tall fescue ,that was the problem in the last yard ,mowing too low ,and not fertilizing well..
I'll just send him a message."
I guess if you can buy a riding mower and a trailer, you're all of a sudden a "landscaper" lol. Then they mow it down to the dirt and kill the grass. smh.
Others are just too lazy to mow so they think if they mow it as low as possible they can wait a month before mowing it again... lol
Then one of my next-door neighbors has the most epic sea of 1000's of yellow dandelions. He is a health nut who walks every morning at dawn but is too lazy to mow... huh? When my lawn is healthy and at nearly 4 inches, the dandelions can't even grow in my yard, no matter how many he has.
You my friend need your own tv show.... great video clear and entertaining!
Great Video!
Dude ... U are smokin! Not grass, of course but highly informative.
we should smoke some grass and then work on our grass.
🙏 Thanks LCN, you helped me get rid of the crabgrass in my lawn
Great videos!! Very fun! I sense you watch Casey Neistat??
Garden Answer yes and I see some of that in your vids too! He has been an influence on so many.
The Lawn Care Nut Agreed!!
Garden Answer yes
What's the name of the music in your video
Garden Answer 3 yrs later
I have been following your tutorials and my lawn has improved very much. There is a Crab Grass invasion though and I am glad you made this video. I will follow instructions for next season. As always, thanks for the guidance.
pumareyes1 you're welcome! glad you're getting results!
Good demonstration ....... thanks for returning to the most basic and best , yet least used ( on RUclips anyway ) instruction aid - chalkboard
Yesquiet I figured it was the only way to really demonstrate the lifecycle of crab grass. Glad you liked it!
lol, except it is called a white board.... Not so basic, it is cutting edge tech..haha
Awesome video. You really made an effort to show us a wide variety of lawn samples. And thanks for the illustrations! Those were a great help!
Thanks. Very informative.....but that music HAS to go!
ok I'll fix it.
The music was EXCELLENT!
That music is lit
Fellow Hoosier here. Love the channel thanks so much
this dude takes his lawn way 2 serious. lol
No such thing as too serious. It's called pride in ownership
i will take anal any day .... oh wait .. shit..
Rather he wait till the HOA jumps on him till he works on his yard?
shit ton chemicals holy fuck ..cancer much
gasdorfic muncher troll!
I know this is a 5 year old video, but I came for Crab grass info and saw downtown Chicago.. Then heard NW IN and then saw an area that looks very familiar! Morse Place! lol I had a buddy that lived down the street. I live in Hammond. Weird
Take care!
Learn to get to the point dude
Learn to put a point on the end of your sentence.
Or find another person to watch.
Exactly, they need to be on point RUclipsrs.
A - MEN !!!
I agree!! I'm looking to people who've tried a certain product, etc to see if it works or not, that's it!!
Crabgrass is the bane of my existence. Great informative video. I have a thick lawn & the lawn care company came out March 31 in central Ohio. Why am I still seeing crabgrass in my yard? It's exasperating!
Too much useless dialog. Get to the point
Great video lost my yard a few years ago after injury, could not take care of it,now that I am better I ride twice to power seed but results are not what I wanted, If possible can you talk a little about power seeding ,it would really help Thanks Again Great Lawn
don't put chemicals on your lawn.
seriously... you people think you are entitled to pour poisons on your lawn to keep it green.
That garbage poisons groundwater and sickens or kills beneficial organisms such as bees, worms, birds...
god made those for a resion , rich people dump chems in soil .
What is "resion"?
peppe I don't use anymore. Your right it kills, alot of wildlife. We use to see alot of horn toads, bees, not now.
peppe don’t put hamsters in your butt
Super thanks. I am dealing with this since last year. Never had it in my lawn before.
been working on my yard trying to get rid of this crap.
Never thought a lawn video would be entertaining
Good details about crabgrass.. I have 95% of them in my yard taking over whatever grass I grew last year. I’ve started pulling them out now as there is no other natural or non toxic method. There’s Going to be a lot of patches in the yard. I want to re-seed those areas making sure no more crab grass come out next year. Any tips on how to stop them from the get go? And if I should use natural fertilizers for rest of the lawn? Thanks!!
In order of operations, how should we take space out the over seeding & malorganite relative to the pre-emergent ? Thanks Love Me Some LCN
I was thinking cultivate the soil which is mainly sand then put topsoil down and then grassed
Thanks
What month should I use the Drive and how long after can I seed?
Good information, unless you live in a warm climate like Florida where we don't get winter or temp below 60 degrees
Always with the quality content sir👏🏽👏🏽
Great video Lawn Care Nut. I've been dealing with crab grass and really hate it, your video was both entertaining and helpful. Thank you!
Very well thought. Now I like to ask, I live in the northeast MA to be exact. I have a big problem with Japanese knotweed. I have tried basically everything to get rid of them that it’s hurting my budget. How do I get rid of them for good?
Love your video editing and humor/attitude great vid
Thank you for this huge tip on crab grass. I just wish that I would have watched this video before I spend over 300 dollars on my lawn.
What’s the best and easiest way to deal with a lawn full of different weeds (including crab grass) my neighbor suggested cooking it, covering the lawn with a large tarp for a couple of weeks in the summer and cooking everything and starting from scratch.
You are the grass doctor! very informative video.....thanks!
omg i have fell in love with the info n his sense of humor lol he needs a movie.
This video, was so helpful,Sir. Thx you so much.
If i scalp the lawn after tenacity and overseed including aeration thatching and scarifying will that be ok?
I would like try Drive 75 DF, but I hear that Tenacity Herbicide is good product as well and it's powerful. It help crabgrass and grassy grass in during summer. It has post and pre emergent.
AirlineChannelVideo Tenacity is a great product, but not accessible in small amounts to homeowners. That's the challenge.
I got a real laugh out of the bonus footage. I have crab grass galore! Thanks for letting me know it was an annual..
