- While out cycling, I came across HMP Styal Prison and Young Offenders Institution. So I had a quick look around the publicly accessible areas outside the prison via the open path, taking care not to go inside any buildings or the prison itself.
It was a very clean and tidy facility, and the site has an interesting history. There were no signs saying no photography anywhere I went, and the bylaws type sign at the road entrance made no mention of taking photographs. I particularly liked the Clink Restaurant and the fantastic work it does with its students.
I had a great interaction with a friendly lady prison officer (who incorrectly told me I couldn't film outside the prison, and asked me to leave the property), and 2 not so great interactions with shouty guys.

Unless there is a bylaw saying no photography, it is perfectly legal and lawful to photograph from a place with implied public access.

"Not allowed" - wrong, it absolutely is. Making demands to stop filming and implied threats of calling the Police (who have zero powers to do anything about it) is contributing to how sh1tty this country is becoming thanks to morons who happily give away (or vote away) their, and others, rights.
The same thing happens here in the States with auditors being confronted with bogus orders shouted by loud mouth bullies. License plates on vehicles are visible in public and are captured all day long by cameras everywhere. You are to be commended on how you calmly and gracefully handle these encounters. The clink..been there for meal few times lol. Its staff are all prisoners, chefs do NVQ’s for qualifications when they leave. The food I have to say is fabulous..so anyone who reads this and not been..it defo worth a visit 😁👍🏻
Section 40D(3A) of the Prison Act 1952 only prohibits the transmitting or receiving of images and sound within a Prison.
Is being on the property classed as "within a prison"? The female officer doesn't really give any detail of what section of law you are in violation off, she just trots out the age old "not allowed".

Styal is not an open prison so photography and video is possible on the prison grounds. The law (section 40D of the Prison Act 1952) is about no photography or video inside a prison. That means where prisoners are. In an open prison, prisoners can access any part of the grounds. So no photography or video is possible in an open prison's grounds.
Marti Blagborough got caught by this. Or rather HMP used that as the excuse to charge him - unfortunately setting a precedent which means that photography and video whilst in public parts of closed prisons can be carried out.

Doesn't always mean it has right of access to the public though. This place did, but say military bases and places with bylaws restricting access don't

When I was a kid in the 70’s. In the summer all the estate kids, would walk around 10 miles through Alderley Edge, from Wythenshawe to go swim in the river Bollin

@@AceAuditsThe dji is great, but quite a lot of GoPros can be glitchy. I think some of them have quality control issues. You seem to have got a good one.
@@albin2232 Yeah my previous GoPro was so jittery. Was ok as a bike cam, but no good for anything else. The 10 is great, well after they ironed out a few issues with firmware it was lol. I love it!

@@PaulEcosse Yes, pretty much any bike can be a swytch bike. The new kits are better that the 1st gen ones like mine.
Can understand staff being sensitive about cameras but in reality it’s all available on satellite ie google maps.Still they have a difficult job to do it just makes fun viewing when someone over reacts to the camera.Sometimes they have no idea about filming rights make up rules as they go along that can be funny when they get really annoyed.

Multiple claims of aggressive behavior by officers at HMP Styal have surfaced through the years.
All kinds of controversial stuff at that prison, including high levels of inmate and staff violence and also suicides.

The site prison is the former Styal Cottage Homes orphanage and work farm dating from 1898. Orphanage closed in 1956 and reopened as a women's prison 1962. The orphanage included cottages, chapel, Oakwood Farm, school and hospital. Each has a wiki page for more history. Oak Farm pre-dates the orphanage and name changed to Oakwood Farm with cottages, hospital and sewage works constructed in the south fields. School was added near the hospital around World War 2. To the northwest was RAF Ringway airfield 1938-1957, now the north end of Manchester Airport.
Aerials views: hospital was the cleared square to the northeast; school and staff cottages were located in the wooded area on the north side.
Nice video, shame you couldn't use the drone (those real pesky LAWS that actually exist for safety reasons, not killing people in helicopters etc,not the imaginary shite people make up 😂), still nice buildings and interactions

Styal has an unfortunate reputation for self harming. For many of the women it is their first time in prison and counselling and support is often inadequate. I'm led to believe there is a hard core group of aggressive lesbian officers who prey on the vulnerable young prisoners.
Lots of reports of these things happening at this prison, and over many years
