Vinny's style was just _made_ for Dio and the Dio-era Sabbath. Amazing!
Vinnie Appice is a very underrated drummer
True
How did I know this was gonna be the first fucking comment? Oh, because it's the most fucking over rated comment on RUclips.
Also listen to Black Sabbath Live Evil his snare has a unique sound
Stupid comment.
He’s got lots of money I’m sure he’s very happy 😁
one of the great heavy rock drummers of his generation
reminds me of Bonham
Totally!!
yes mate
the spirit of JB is in Vinnie
Vinny is the reason I started playing drums. It all started with the Mob Rules, one of the best albums of all time. Everyone mentions all these influential drummers well he was mine.
Same here Bro! 💯💪
Yup, when I started out drumming it was Vinny Appice, Bun E. Carlos and Mick Brown that influenced me the most.
Vinnie is not only plaing the drums, he lives in every song what he plays and i appreciate that
Every fill I'm like: "is he gonna make it?" and then he somehow does.
"Somehow"? 😂😂😂
That's all Vinny. He leaves no space.. Every drummer says the exact same thing
Same here. Funny as hell. He's chatty on the sticks.
Always loved his fills and rolls. Tasty.
I'd have to say he's the best at it.
i stood beside him at a drum clinic back in the late 80's ,,it was awesome to see how he did all those tasty fills and rolls up close.
his mob rules drumming is his absolute best (close behind, is holy diver.)
@@cango5679 Yep. Love ‘em both.
@@cango5679 And it goes over, and over, and over again.
I love vinny no body has his style
Vinny one of the best rock & roll drummers out there!
he did a clinic at a store i used to work at in the 90's. he brought a guitar player and bass player, we didn't mic him up and he was...and still is the loudest and heavest hitter i've ever seen. love his playing.
Same here. I hosted him at our store and we had mics on every drum. After the first song, we had cut all of them off. We should’ve known what was coming when he removed several chain links on the bass pedal so the beater was as far away from the head as possible so he could kick it as hard as possible. He was loud asf!
I saw him at that time at Hollywood drum shop and he had Tracy G with him , I didn't recognize the bass player
Then you've never played w/Shane Evans from Collective Soul. Guy absolutely beats the drums like they owe him money.
5:31he's doing that unique grip of his that lets him rest his thumb. I get terrible friction burns when I do that
He's such a musical drummer in this style, he puts down a lot of musical ideas. I was watching one of his streams, and he was talking favorite licks from Jon Bonham, and he cited many of them coming from Max Roach first. Saw a few of them in this performance
I only just noticed that - don't get me wrong, he is one of the greatest drummers of all times with his energy, his knowledge of what a song needs and his amazing fills - but his technique is very bad. Looks very stiff. No wonder he has to rest sometimes in a song.
Next to Bonham, my favorite drummer.
Holy Diver was the reason that I became a drummer in 1983. I Vinnie is one of the best rock drummers there's ever been.
I agree and my last name is Green!😊👍
Vinny Jimmy & Adrian could CHUG
HE ROCK! HE ROCK SEE HOW HE ROCK!!!!
Vinny is simply incredible in every aspect of his drumming and best of all he is very humble and so down to earth. I have met him a few times and he spoke to me like I was his equal.
Agreed! Met him with LIL band and spoke to him about grip between index and middle finger. . . gave me the story about it and how he discovered it!
My Favorite Drummer Ever!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🤟🏽
He has a Very Unique Style...
Vinny is the man! I have loved his drumming for years.
Effortless. One of the cooler drummers for sure. Love his style!
my favourite drummer ! great groove ,very powerful and smart fills ... my primary inspiration :)
I Love vinnie. He SMOKES his brother. Such a solid player. Hes the best as far as im concerned
No one smokes Carmine.
Saw him at a drum clinic in Portland, Maine in 1989. He was amazing, graceful, powerful and SWUNG like mad. And he managed to break 2 brand new Sabians as well!
In my opinion, Ronnie didn't have a better chemistry with a drummer than he had with VA.
The singer-drummer-chemistry on Holy Diver and The last in line is pure gold.
Love the space he creates in his fills, deffo has his own style, awesome
One of the best in harder rock...Dio and Sabb songs don't work without him..👍
Watch Bill Ward War pigs live when he was young. It works alright!!!
The beauty of the original is the way he let it breath which, created this monster groove.
Ken
I'm not 100% sure but I think he does it so he can do stick spins.
There is another video where he explains that he just does it to change it up and maybe kinda rest his hand a little. I think Carmine does it too.
I listened to the song a little while ago and realized how much groove he had when he recorded this tune. It's actually a hard song to play and keep interesting because it's so damn slow.
What an awesome player with a great sound! People say he reminds them of Bonham but Vinnie's got his own vibe going on. Those quick 32nd note fills on slow tempo songs are his thing and very recognizable. He's got Bonham's chops and feel but with some additional stuff off his own.
Vinny has fantastic groove and an incredible back beat where he plays slightly behind the beat (like Bonham). He's the type of drummer where when you hear him play, you know it's Vinny!
Great drummer!
Gets better every time you watch. Vinny is what made DIO......DIO !!!
I'm not even a drummer but I watch all the Vinny Appacie videos on RUclips that I can.
The first three deal albums have been in my top 20 favorite albums of all time ever since they came out 30 years ago. I love Vivian Campbell's playing. And of course, Vinny's drumming.
haha - love the 5 count and how Vinny opens Hi Hat on 5 for others to cue 👍awesome, Rock on Vinny! Cheers to Carmine, 🥁😎DC
What people don't understand, this is the video camera mic capturing the ambient sound in the room. This is not recording audio so his drums don't sound like crap the audio quality does.
Vinny Appice to me is a John Bonham in metal, but has his own swagger.
The absolute best rock drummer in my opinion. Just listen
The word that Vinny was looking for that RJD used was "Predictable"
Cliche'
What do you mean?
As a studio drummer of several decades myself, I put him next to three of my other primary drum influences, the others being Neil Peart, Alex Van Halen and then Nicko McBrain, but Vinnie had what I'd call more advanced drum fills than all of them except for Peart. So to me, that says a lot, especially for the time frame being the 1980's. Very significant.
nice to hear a pro drummer not rambling on about Bonham being the worlds greatest drummer ever LOL
thank you
@@toddlavigne6441 But Nicko?
Vinnies use of space in his playing is so good
Drumming during the guitar solo was great. So creative and fresh.
VINNY ROCKS..............
Thanks 😘☺️😊😘
I´m just amazed watching this video and I don´t even play drums
Great drummer love his stuff with Dio & sabbath
VINNIEEEEE!!!! 🤘🏼🥁
one of my favorite drummers......great fills
Vinny is a beast. So underated.
Vin y has a,ways had that herd of dinosaurs plodding along style of drumming. Freakin’ love it!
LEGEND 🤘
Vinny completely awesome...RIP RJD
this is talent
Vinny is so bad ass!
Vinny is a monster on the kit. Yeah!!!
💖Vinnie!
And oh yeah, one of the greatest singers to ever live singing the song....
Vivian Campbell, Dio, and Vinnie. What an amazing line up. Black Sabbath 3. With Ozzy as Black Sabbath 2. If you think about it. 3 Black Sabbath's were created. 🎸.
Rainbow, Ozzy, and Dio bands had bassists that understood music theory and could actually compose.
Huge smile from ear to ear during the whole thing.
The best replacement for Bill Ward. I still like Ward. But this guy is very good.
I love Vinny Appice!!
Priceless groove.beautiful fills
He’s so damn smooth as a metal/rock drummer. He lays back and slams it, at just the right time!
Finally I know what he did for those triplet fills. I always thought of it as a common right/left triplet but it never sounded right when I played it.
I love this song and drumming. He never used the first Tom. But still fu#*ning cool
Always thought he had a nice groove. This one is very reminiscent of Bonham. I liked the stuff he played on the Heaven and Hell Tour. I have the DVD.
What a beast on the drums. Love the raw sound.
Very "melodic" drumming, and indeed, as someone already pointed out, tons of lovely fills, that you can hear much better here than burried in the bed of decibels produced by the other Dio members. Of course, there are many good drummers who can cover this, but it's quite another thing to "invent" all these decorations for the first time. Aping is easy, creating is yet another thing. Good job Vinny !
I got to open up for him in Minneapolis. He was a very nice humble person.
Him and his brother Carmine are both awesome
Thanks Vinnie you're a Legend!!
I remember I had a live version of this song on cassette in the eighties and I kept rewinding it because of the drums, still great
Listen to dio last in live , Vinny is incredible on that album, the best he ever sounded, he makes a lot of those songs my favorite versions with his different pacing and different fills, he even fucks up at the end of holy diver but than catches himself and goes with it and makes it sound awesome
One if not my favorite rock drummer. His fills are awesome. Used to think Lars was the best till they changed completely after Master of Puppets. Just love Vinnie's style. Love to have some DDrums but oh well. Right now it's fighting through the pandemic on unemployment. Thank you for posting this video! I never saw any video with him in it other than concert videos. This is very much appreciated! Btw, is there a website of his to follow his stuff? Thank you!
Yes, Vinny does have a website.www.vinnyappice.com
Much Love Vinnie! You ARE AMAZING!!
The GREATEST❤️🤘
Much respect for all that played with R D J
What a great song! Drums, vocals, guitars, bass, all killing..I always liked Dio but now I'm really into him and Vinny's playing. Great stuff!
So Good . Best fills
His playing is exceptional. It's so complicated that at times it looks awkward but fantastic. He is only second to Neal Peart in my book.
This Dude incredible drumming
Great drummer!
👍👍
Vinny no longer reps Ddrum. Now its Sawtooth. I met him a couple years ago and he is such a down to earth guy.
Phenomenal drummer. Vinny is GOD
Vinny is the best. 🤘
I hate the way those drums sound. He's such a killer drummer. I've been playing guitar since 85 and this is the stuff I learned on. It's my favorite Dio album and one of my favorite songs and the drums just don't sound like the recording.
That is WAY COOL! In some aspects I like this take better than the original. Awesome.
Thanks for that triplet fill there at the end!
This video made my day.
so good
Grande VINNIE
Very good!
Vinny, Nicko Mcbrain, and Tommy Aldridge 🥁❤🥁🤘🥁
I think he's probably the one I've learned the most just watching him the way he explains the count the five is the best such a great drummer I'd pay top dollar for a one-on-one for a week so I could correct and get rid of my phobias when playing he would be the one you just seem so down the Earth and it also seems like he'd be the one to make your drum kit sound like a million bucks even though it was under a thousand
awesome song indeed......
Great drummer
This is so cool. I've watched it about a hundred times. Still can't play it though. (yet)
he makes it look so easy :D I want to hear this only with ghost notes, no actual hits.
Definitely a unique grip
2:36 drums start!
Ginger Baker did the same thing with White Room, the intro was different and blah and he made the 5/4 part but never got writing credit for it, and it's at least 1/3 of the song, usually a band may get nervous and decline when a drummer suggests a time change, no NO it's 4/4
a lot of vocalist I've played with need that count in before "home" comes in
Amazing. Rip dio
I like the look of that Kit, Glossy Matt Black.
Solid and powerful 👍🏻👍🏻 Thank you for posting 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for listening
badazz drummer right there boy!
