- Wangan Midnight anime race series highlight! Koichi Hiramoto's final shot with his GT-R "Dragon" against Blackbird and Z in an intense high-speed street race!! I love how at 1:57 you can hear Devil Z in your right earbud/headphone and Blackbird in your left. Just a tiny detail but jesus, it really makes you feel part of the show.

@@zera0611 Hiramoto didn't give up his wife. His spouse discovered he spent all their savings to buy and tune a car and told him she couldn't take any more of his expensive hobbies and bad addictions, and after this last treachery, she decided to leave him and go back to live with her parents.
Hiramoto then flashed back all his life and all his friends, then had a revelation when he thought about his son. As the author said in an interview : "Koichi realized, with much pain and torment, that the Wangan is merely an addictive, destructive world where you can never be the winner, and that the real world, your family, and your feelings, are the most important things that make you a good man, forever."
After retiring, Hiramoto sold the car to a rich driver and recovered all his money plus a bonus from the sale.
I thought necessary to clarify the "Dragon-R32" story. 👍
One of the best storylines of Wangan Midnight. The later Maximum Tune games does this justice.

This is by far my favorite clip of the whole series. Just that opening shot as the music changes to "Like Hell" after the calmer music in the build up.
I love this scene the most in WM. The characters' passion with speed is on another level compared to Initial D.
Welp initial does not need much horsepower driving its all about touge attacking but the character in Initial D is all about the power of "Luck" if you know what I mean

Ya. I saw sum video a while back about comparing the 2 shows, forgot what it was called. But I think he said sumn how they're not really comparable cause they're different. Initial D is like, heroic stuff and shi. When someone crashes, it's not serious. Mistakes don't really have intense consequences despite racing on mountains. Just win or lose the race. Wangan Midnight has like, a more realistic approach. It should the consequences of going into that racing world n stuff
@@JM-bd9qothat's because Wangan midnight depicts racing that's more dangerous. Driving at 300km/h is way more dangerous than racing on the mountains . Both have a realistic approach on how street racing is they just are 2 different kinds of racing

Fun fact, Tatsuya Shima (blackbirds name) is the voice of Takumi, Asakura Akio (Devil Z driver) is the same voice of Sakamoto from Initial D (Sakamoto is the driver of the Cappuccino in 4th stage)

Sure Initial D is so much to watch, but goddamn the races at Wanga are so freaking intense
It's no 1/4 drag, it's maximum velocity. Highways have traffic and bends so skill is still a requirement on the shutoko. The drivers are overtaking in 200+ km/h speed, RWD would've been unstable.
@@Joshua_N-A Yeah, people who think highways are too straight never raced on one. That slight bend you're taking on your way to work can kill you quicker than going off a mountain at mildly competitive speeds.
@@RyuusanFT86 A lot of people have no clue how nerve wrecking it is taking that slight bend on a highway at 200+km/h even if you have AWD. Not to mention these guys are dodging traffic at extreme speed too, just a slight oversteer and you're potentially dead. Overtaking at over 200km/h isn't like overtaking in a city at 90km/h.
@@xylven5918 Yeah. Hell, even driving a Kanjou at a constant 140km/h can be difficult if we're trying to stay on one lane.
I've wrecked on a Kanjou and Touge and I'd rather wreck on a pass at 150kmh. I either survive or nose dive off a cliff to instant death. Withe safety equipment, if you wreck on a highway you're never deaf instantly. Either severely wonded and in need of EMTs or you're in extreme pain from your ankles and forearm snapping and now you have to also pay the city 500,000 dollars in damage fees

since i can relate to hiramato so much, i got people who care about me, sacrificing all that due to speed and when giving it all the power down, you start to get flash backs, things you care or cared about, your family, your wife and kid, and you begin to get chills on your spine and you let off the gas, later realizing speed is not as important as your family that you brought to this world.
That's why i don't want to race IRL, Video games exists, i value my life so much & don't want to put it to risk

0:40 I always loved this shot of the GTR passing Blackbird and the camera is moving along. and the music is perfect for the scene.
Love how all the other instruments cut off at 2:01 and they just got the bassline playin for for dramatic effect. Makes the scene wayyy more intense.
The whole sound design of this scene goes incredibly hard. It does a good job of making us feel the Tension Hiramoto is feeling. This race is his last shot.
The 1km that actually equals 10km
It would take 12 seconds to get to that truck while doing 320 km/h, however the truck has it's speed too so it would be more like 18 seconds...still it's fast as fuck

From time to time I like to revisit this scene and listen to music from the Maximum Tune games.
"Fallen Angel" by Aspen Vincent fits this scene so well that I'm convinced the series would've been million times better with the Maximum Tune soundtracks.

This is the MOST intense scene in the whole series. The second one was the 1st time the Z reached 330 with that slow and steady build.
The chills hearing the engines roar one next to the other. The speed they are reaching and the dead end. It is marvelous to rewatch again. Just like the first 10 times i've watched it still gives me chills and Adrenalin rush. Amazing soundtrack choice + good car sounds

So.... these guys were able to go 320kmh... but in the much later episodes.. the main characters had harder time going above 300kmh
Much of that depends on the traffic, the route, and how far they feel like pushing it. Just goes to show how formidable Hiramoto's R was for them to take things this far.
main character who? Akio or the others? If other racers, the Lan Evo and RX7 FC are harder to reach 300 KM/H because those cars are less sustainable to counter the airflow after 250 KM/H than other cars such as 911, Testa, Skyline GTR and Supra.
For Akio and Shima (Blackbird), it has same reason as the upper reply

I know this is a late response, but here are my 2 cents: as mentioned before it depends on the traffic and the area, but for example i have a diesel truck, not fast by any means but in some areas i can do 160 kmh top speed, most of the times i cannot go over 140 kmh, it is a turbo diesel though so night time and cold temperatures will help the engine's power.
But that is my point, depending of the highway (elevation and surface quality) you can get 20kmh+ top speed or maybe your regular one.

ngl, Hiramoto's arc is the most saddest episode on this series. i mean he saved his money a lot and suddenly went down after he bought an R32 and faced against Blackbird and Devil Z. for me, this is really good filler(?)

That's your opinion, mate. In _my_ opinion, Wangan Midnight is a nice show, but also so incredibly cheesy that I had to quit watching it 30 episodes in. I just couldn't handle it. Initial D is more down to earth and objective, and barely has any "spiritual" stuff in it. They're just different.

Which one is better initial D or this one + you a real one if you get it right
Not gonna lie, Initial D is the better anime overall. It's more appealing to the average car guy. But for some people (like me), Wangan Midnight is just so satisfying to watch. Most people don't get it and those who do can't really even explain it, but for those who are passionate about speed and/or building a car to hit the limits with, WM really hits the nail on the head. That is why I like WM just as much as Initial D overall. I have the same disease as the people in the anime.
