- Yoshiaki Ishida has been chasing the shadow of the "Devil Z" in hopes of one day running in front of the legendary S30 Datsun 240Z with his Ferrari Testarossa. After meeting the "Tuner from Hell" (Kitami), Ishida's dream of outrunning the Z is becoming possible! But it's going to cost him big money! Thanks for watching! Well if it would be the nfs carbon dumpster truck it would be, with nitrous it goes 0-60 in about 1,5-2seconds, and had a top speed of +/-420km/h which it gets to in about 10 or so seconds.

I was gonna say. Do they trace real cars or do 3D models for the driving scenes? No artist goes from that bad to that good so quiclkly.

I don't think everyone noticed that but part of the Ferrari tune was removing the rear spoiler which was causing more downforce on rear tires and removing it will make you go faster but compromise the traction at high speeds

The Testarossa has a natural 40:60 rear weight bias due to being mid-engined. Removing the wing doesn't compromise traction that much, and if anything, that helps the front spoiler apply more downforce to the front wheels, which you would want in order to maintain steering control at high speeds.

In the manga Ishida crashed into the truck and broke his foot or something, and after his final race against the Z he retired from racing because of his sickness

That's funny because in the anime instead of getting more sick, he was operated on at the hospital and had the cancer tumor removed.

This video reminds me of a manga I've read a while back called Countach. It revolves around a salaryman who gets to buy his childhood dream car, a Lamborghini Countach LP400 and races it in both touge and highway roads. Its pretty much Wangan Midnight and Initial D but with more exotic cars.
I've heard about that manga, everyone says it's awesome!

The modern Wangan midnight could be more interesting:
You'd have a subaru Legacy with a flat-6 twin turbo,
Nissan 370z possibly with an RB30DETT,
You'd have obviously a Supra, probably a mk3 or 4,
You'd have obviously an R35 GTR with the least upgrades,
You'd have an EVO 9/10 with the most upgrades,
You'd have an LS swapped miata,
You'd probably also have an FD RX7 with 20B turbo...
Then, you'd have american cars such as a Hellcat, camaro, Shelby GT350, even a corvette C6 or C7...
Extras would be a super built Exige, Esprit V8, Aston, Lambo, and finally a Ferrari....
For the Ferrari, I think it makes most sense either a highly tuned 430, or maybe a 458 that gets legendarily tuned later in the show.
You forget the Porsche 911 991 turbo.

There'd probably be a boxster flat-6 twin turbo as that has a crowd, a 997 turbo, a 928 with a later panamera V8, a 944/924 LS swapped, a BMW e46 with a tuned V8, an m6 with a tuned V10, and obviously some MBs with their supercharged engines and later twin turbo V8s...
Maybe Live you forget some of the first amg models had big v8s like old muscle cars had. Like the c63 amg hammer and the more modern sls amg.
I love to see how a Ferrari Enzo will work or the Maserati Mc12 in thsoe midnight races. Altough both will be incredibly wide to drive on those autobahn like racing which may not be great for that niche and more like greatly disadvantaged for drivers. Not to mention how long they are. The 488, f430, and other hardcore versions will be way better for this racing as the size difference will make it better.
What would the Subaru legacy be there to do? Watch?
I'm sad how Ishida mysteriously dissapeared in the Anime after racing against the Devil Z while Kitami was riding with Him.
He was actually one of my favorite side characters.

fun fact the Testarossa is a 5 speed manual meaning the part where Ishida supposedly went from 5th to 6th gear it was all just to make it seem like he was about to "get serious" by switching to a higher gear

Really liked the character arc of the rich man. He was dying and the Z inspired him to have to build the Testa into a machine that made him feel alive.

In the 80s my dad had a 1976 Datsun 280z with 470hp in the original Strait six. He said the fastest it ever been was 158mph when the front end pick up and he lost all steering he said for 15 years it was only defeated twice by a mk1 golf gti and a 396 impala other than that it was the king of our town of 50k people

forgot to include the part about Ishida has cancer...or rather early diagnosis of something that is a form of cancer. he has had a successful career but it is implied his life lacked something to live forward to,until he encounters the Devil Z. after that near crash experience, he goes for treatment and goes back to his usual life.
if initial D was an anime focused on skills, wangan midnight focused on the madness people do to achieve speed and taming such speed, very technical terms comes out in the anime that makes little sense to the casual viewer.
