My father had an BMW 2002ti back in the early 70s and it ran 200km/h real smooth. So we have a history of cars that can go real fast real safe. It all comes down to a good suspensions and the highway itself. The autobahn is very smooth and straight, the curves are sloped and optimized for high speeds. A friend of mine has a heavily tuned Golf I and speeds down the autobahn at well over 200 with no issues. When i visit the US for vacation for example you clearly see why a speed limit is needed there. No crash barriers between the lanes, there are many potholes and trash is lying around everywhere. You just can't have a tyre lying on the street or a pothole at 250 km/h. And the american cars themselfes are just dangerous at high speeds with their shitty suspension and no road feel at all. And additionaly all cars have to pass a safety inspection every two years to make sure there are no unsafe rustbuckets around.
