- The Voice of the Devil Z. A personal project that I've been working on for a while.
For the engine sounds of other cars in the anime (GT-R, 911, etc.), I also have some clips of that here:

How?
I acquired a copy of the anime with 5.1 surround sound audio, which allowed me to take out the audio channels with music, and have only the engine (and dialogue) sound remaining. Then, I went through all 26 episodes and picked out the best clips with clear and crisp sounds. As a bonus, I upscaled the clips from 720p to 1080p using After Effects, and then transcoded the resulting videos to 120FPS using SVP, before uploading the final product to RUclips.
Why?
In a few years, I might have a new hobby, a new obsession. But for now, it is the Z and Wangan, and I will treasure this time we have together.

there's rarely any upshifts in this anime lol, but when there is it's just pure music
That's because with cars modified for 300kph+, one of the key parts to doing that (apart from engine power) is a MUCH taller final gear ratio inside the differential.
Therefore, the jump between gears is THAT much longer, in the anime we're mostly introduced to a battle-scene when they're already in 3rd gear or higher, rather than being there all the way from absolute stand stills>top speed, hence, not as frequent gear changes! :)
@@ToreDL87 you are right, I was about to say the same, the gears are larger wich is why there is not much gear shifting and plus they always maintain the rpm's high to keep up the speed
PS: at least is better that F&F 20 speed gears shifting

They even get the slightest rattle that the car makes at speed, something only a car owner would understand.
They even got the sound of the door closing perfectly.
As a 280z owner myself, I can 100% confirm.

Made by ACGT, the same studio that produced Initial D 4th Stage hence the identical CGI animation. In WM, you can hear Initial D's voice actors themselves. Takumi is a surgeon who drives a Porsche.

@@colten2524 Yep, both are voiced by Shinichiro Miki. Takumi in the Legend trilogy is an exception because he's voiced by Mamoru Miyano over there.
@xylven5918 Yeah. But in the 3rd part of the movie, Shinichiro Miki voiced the orange 86 GT driver.

Maybe in recordings of an f1. In real life they sound way better. My buddies dad actually owns an f1. Well he owns alot of ridiculous cars but drool the f1 will always be my grail. Well besides maybe a paganism Zonda r or that one road legal Porsche 917 or whatever the le mans car was.

One of the things I love about Wangan Midnight is how they make cars seem like mythical apex predators that wander the concrete plains of the highway, looking for prey to catch. Beasts that you would stare at awe from a distance but you would never tango with them otherwise you could get bit.

The engine in the manga is an all mechanical carb twin turbo setup. Only one such car existed when the manga came out and that car disappeared

i really love wangan midnight, but the only thing that gets me that there is no real turbo sound except for the one downshift at 1:30. The Devil Z sounds grateful for a NA triple carburetor ,but not as a twin turbo

While 4AGE is for lightweight drifter, L28 is for literal racing, also endurance if its posible.

But part of the charm with L-series is the rocker arm clatter :D
Btw someone milled off the front of a RB26 head (to make the camgears accessible for internal sump) and added coolant pipe on the outside = poor man's L-series twin cam :)

This anime hardly ever redlines the car, normally it would be more high pitched. But this is how L-engine sounds on a cruise or low rpms lol.

Interesting note: The Engine samples used for the Devil Z are actually from a 350z, as assets were reused from initial D. Here is what this car would likely sound like IRL :)

It’s not too far off the L-series. For what the original sample was originally recorded from its a very good alteration to sound similar to the older engine. It’s close but the Turbo L-Series is definitely deeper in tone and the lack of turbo “whistle” as it spools was definitely something I noticed when I first watched the series.
Didn't the fifth stage released way after the Wangan midnight? Imo initial d actually reused the L28 assets for the 350z. 350z sounds wildly different from this sound assets
All the way around. Initial D Fifth Stage used the same sound samples from WM, since the studio was the same.
For the Wangan Midnight anime, they hired 3 real life highly tuned cars to record all sounds. For the Z, they used Star Road S30Z, tho it's an NA engine they managed to get a turbo feeling of it.

Ryuji Ikeda's Nissan Fairlady Z33 from Initial D Fifth Stage also uses the same sound for the engine. Perhaps because both Wangan and Fifth Stage share the same audio studio (so I've heard)

@@frostythewolf8290 you would be amazed by the suspension settings of this cars. most of the 300kmh cars that ran at yatabe back in the day had stock suspension (mostly from the european sold cars, which had it a tad stiffer)
@@frostythewolf8290 they actually did, the Z before it came the "Devil" was racing in a track, until Kitami crashed it. And handling a car at 300km/h needs some serious suspension settings so that you won't slide
L28 is the best engine ever made and the the fairlady Z with a j spec body kit like the Devil Zis the best car ever

There (just the rev sounds) they used an l28 engine, with a mandrel bent exhaust with FCR41 carbs it seems

@@wills.junks7 L28 turbo engine never came carbed, it was the L28ET from the 280zx s130. The only other car that has an L28 from the z line up is the 280z. Most likely, Kitimi bought the L28 longblock, bored the cylinder and used a stroked crankshaft, and then twin turbod with either twin or triple carbs (I'm leaning towards twin, one for each turbo) and then put it in this 240z, since the 240z has an L24 engine stock. The real life version of the devil z was actually a fuel injected L28ET in a red 280zx, funnily enough. It also ran on the Wangan and was this car's main inspiration.
@@inaNis_ oh I actually didn't onew the ABR Hosoki S130Z was fuel injected and yeah I do know it was the main inspiration for the Devil Z, which the S130Z itself is a iconic red figure in the Mid Night Club team (which it still exists today, just a fyi if you know about Mid Night). And yea I think Kitami would've done that
@@inaNis_ I always thought of it like Kitami engine swapped the 240z with a L28 derived from the 280Z and does a stroker onto it, tt'd it with 3x twin carbs (I'm guessing?) And boom
@@wills.junks7 I assume its twin carbs that feed 3 cylinders each, since it would be pretty annoying to split that air from 2 turbos into 3 different carburators.

Some turbos don't have sound. It is a stock turbo. Plus they recorded an N/A car so hope that answers it after 3 months lol

Moght be NA yet wouldn't be surprised if some Carburatted Turbo would sound somewhat similar.
@@kaedeschulz5422 totally agreeing with you. I had multiple kind of talks to people but I do believe its a modified VQ sound file which would make sense if it's a high performance VQ without any turbos

for hillum gas injector like nitro oxide in high RPM only help your valve not bent that all...hilum more cool and clean, unlike hydrogen gonna dry your sleeve combustion, so ring piston gonna harm your harm that cylinder.... midnight race is endure race like MME, just it on highway....better save your money and buy liquid nitrogen tank and install in car boot, then sync with auto spray siliniod the whole engine bay while endure...89% for for sure no power lost....all silinoid must be place at gasket area....or for exhaust valve exist you need bolt siliniod..so whole the magnifold have chiller and when the air circle to turbo it gonna suck a hot air into combustion system....89% you can sustain your torque in highway cause your engine quite cool.

I have the Devil Z In Pixel Car racer I got :240Z The Og Z And Sr20 A Twin turbo a Big Black intercooler a body kit and Dark blue paint and a drop "4" So it can go faster and a red intake. So that makes it 418 Km/h
