Gen X and was a big fan of Duran Duran. They burst onto the scene when I was just getting into music. They get overlooked by people who think they were just a pop band. They are a talented group of musicians.
Growing up in the 80’s at least in my experience, the girls loved Duran Duran, no guys actually did or would admit it if they did. However, when I listen to it now in my 50’s I can appreciate how good they actually are.
Seriously. It was easy to write them off as a glam-band in the 80s with sytle over substance, but they all had mad chops, especually John. Look for his youtube video from a couple of years ago where he breaks this bassline down, it's amazing and he clearly still *loves* playing it.
This band is still going strong 40+ years later. Still making new music and selling out concerts. Trust me when I tell you, they are gonna surprise and impress you on every turn. It should probably also be noted that when this album was recorded, they were all in their early 20s, with one actually being 19. This entire album is widely regarded as a classic, and they were known for their videos. I can't really describe to you how huge Duran Duran was in the 80s. They have been inducted into the R&R HOF. They are literally legends. You have just fallen down a rabbit hole of epic proportions. Have fun. The Duranies will come.
🙋🏼♀️ Hi. I’m one of those Duranies 😃 I saw them at the Odeon New Street Birmingham, Villa Park, and Birmingham NEC Arena. It was always lovely to see them play when they came home to Birmingham.
As a metal/punk fan in the 80s, I was programmed to hate Duran Duran. They schooled me after I got older, too. First two albums are bass guitar ecstasy.
These guys were marketed more like a boy band back in the 80s which is crazy considering the music talent on display. This song is a certified banger®️
MTV was bigger than anything in the mid 80's. People would watch a video like this over and over. This was what made the song sell. And Duran Duran was one of those bands that made the top videos of the era. Duran Duran had many great song in 80's, Hungry like a Wolf, The Reflex, Ordinary People, Save a Prayer just a couple of great songs.
GenX to the core ---these blokes were at the height of their powers when I was a senior in high school in '83-4, all over the radio and MTV (which wasn't even three years old yet, and they were on the leading edge)...I quite enjoyed 'em and respected their musicianship This is their best track, and "Save a Prayer" from the same album is right up there...also recommend: "Planet Earth," "My Own Way," "Is There Something I Should Know," "The Reflex," and "New Moon on Monday" ---seek official videos

Born in 68, graduated in 86...Duran Duran was top of the food chain for pop. Good time for music. Classic rock, nu wave, beginning of rap, even pop was good...
Duran Duran was one of the groups that ushered in music video when no one knew what a music video was supposed to look like. Their videos were usually in unique locations and very creative. Mostly, they were known as a "fun" band which made them popular but hurt them musically because they weren't taken seriously early on. Musically, they are incredible and I urge you to watch more of their videos!
❤️ Duran Duran ❤️ My favorite from them is "Lonely in Your Nightmare" This particular video is still my favorite music video of all time, because it was just so FUN! Matched the song perfectly ❤️
Almost the same age as me (b 1965), but I don't agree with where the sociologists have split the generations. To me, all the people born from '60-80 are Gen X in the culture we grew up with. Latch-key kids, etc. That final generation who grew up after the hippies, but before computers were common in homes. The "late boomers" (1960-64) have more in common with Gen X than the true Boomers.

Remember that this song Rio was 1982. MTV just came out in 1981. The video reflects the beginning of when Videos began for music. Duran Duran was big on MTV with Rio, Hungry Like the Wolf, The Reflex, A View to a Kill, etc. I was 11 when MTV came on TV. Rio was a good song. I love Heavy Metal but I had to admit Duran Duran had some talent.
Polo, I'm 70 years old and have loved music since I was young ( about 6 or 7). When other kids came in from playing to watch cartoons that came on at 5:00 pm I came in and watched American Bandstand that at the time was on daily Monday thru Friday.Duran Duran was one of my favorite bands of the second British Invasion. Their videos were very innovative in this new video genre. I saw them in concert when I was about 27. Loved them.
It is hard to overstate how influential Duran Duran were in the 1980's. The name came from the film Barbarella (the villain was name Duran Duran - a riff on Sirhan Sirhan). Between Duran Duran's first album and this one, Rio, MTV had become an international phenomenon. If you could get good looking videos in regular runs there, your song would be a hit. So once the album was mostly complete nearly everyone flew off to film the first set of videos (Nick Rhodes and Andy Taylor stayed to finish the album and worked 48 hours straight before jumping on a plane). Videos for the album were filmed mostly in Sri Lanka and Antigua (Rio's location shoot).
There were loads of cheeseball concept videos in the 80s. It was a relatively new medium and it got a little weird at times. I agree, this song is on a level that isn't helped by this video. Bass line is out of control. John Taylor is a madman.
The 80s had incredible music. Yes indeed they also had a mega amount of one hit wonders a staggering amount of one hit wonders, all great songs. Bands everywhere making great music. It was all incredible.
I am absolutely loving these channels of people discovering songs I grew up with, listening to them for the first time and seeing the reactions. It kind of makes me fall in love with the songs all over again.
Duran Duran is an awesome band. They are still making great music. I love so many of their songs and their videos are iconic. I was about to rip you for slandering this video because the images of them absolutely killing it on that racing yacht are incredible! Oh, listen to “Save a Prayer” or “Union of the Snake” by them if you get a chance.
Their first 2 albums are absolute bangers. Great “headphone music.Extremely, sonically pleasing. And the basslines on the first 2 albums were just off the hook. Taylor really went off in the early 80s.
Big time band. A ton of great hits. I was in my 20's during the whole decade of the 80's. I've grown to appreciate the music so much more since watching these reactions. I think I kind of took it for granted all the great groups that were coming out one right after another. I feel blessed to have experienced it all!
I was playing in some bands back then and experienced all of this great music first hand. I'm 80 now, my wife is 67, and still going strong! Thanks for your channel Polo.
Play that f-in' base John! Play that f-in' base John!…👏👏👏 If not every song on this album ("Rio"), then most of them could've made Top 10 or Top 40. So I'm gonna recommend 1 of their coolest tracks that rarely gets mentioned: "New Religion" (it's upbeat, a bit dark, just in a good way; & the execution of the pre-chorus lyrics are badass & fun) It's not requested to reactors vry much, not bc it's not great but bc it's diff & mainly it gets forgotten as it's not a released single - meaning no vid. Now, I like that since it can also mean no distraction on 1st listen, given you can always watch a live vid after, & if you like the song you should; esp DD's "Official Live" vid fr/ a Live Concert made into a kinda film/concert, shown 1st on Cinemax I think, then later on Mtv where those songs can be fnd individually on DD's YT Channel, called: "As the Lights Go Down" Anyway, obvi if you like watching vids then check that 1 out; however, I'mma Simon(vocalist)-girl, so I like studio versions btr bc he layers his vocals, including for most harmonies, vs someone else taking over when live… Casual fans may not remember NR or ever even heard it since it couldn't get radio play bk then. But I'm guessing most Duranies know it well… Also, as others have mentioned they still tour globally, while also still making new music. Hell, even their covers are great. And tho their latest studio album has several covers (made for Halloween last yr, w/ additions this yr in a "deluxe edition") I still think their Bowie tribute of "5 Years" made for the fifth anniversary of his death shows how sharp they all still sound. So if you wanna chk out how good they're doin 4+ decades later, I'd play that vid which has Bowie's piano player joined in… Take care, & thx for sharing ur DD reaction; I always subscribe as soon as someone does…😉😊
Mercy, the daydreaming I did about these guys in the 80s! Still one of my favorite bands. They have a lot of facets to their music. Glad you're checking them out with an open mind. Thank you and peace!
I’m Gen X, born in 1977. I’m a melomaniac who was raised by a melomaniac/audiophile with fabulous taste in music. The music of the 80’s was exceptional!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!! The only thing that compares is the music of the 90’s! 😂. Honestly, imo, the 80’s and 90’s were the absolute best times for music, ever!!
GenX here. I was / still am a major “Duranie” (that’s what Duran2 fans are called) Their videos may seem cheesy now, but compared to other videos of that point, they were groundbreaking. Duran2 traveled the world for their videos. Many of their videos are mini movies in exotic locations. Their main director for these shoots was Russell Mulcahy, who directed ‘Highlander’. Duran Duran were compared to the second coming of The Beatles in America at that time. They often get mislabeled as a “boy band”, which couldn’t be more wrong. The two founders, Nick Rhodes (keys, synthesizers) and John Taylor (bass) were classmates who later met Roger Taylor (drums), no relation to John, and they met Simon LeBon (lead vocal / songwriter) at a club called The Rum Runner in Birmingham, England. They later auditioned lead guitarists and there they added, Andy Taylor (no relation to John or Roger). They all are very accomplished musicians and each song is written by themselves. *They were extremely handsome which drew in all the girls. Myself included. 😊 probably the reason why they got that “boy band” label. They’re still going strong with albums and touring. Their shows are amazing! Andy Taylor left the band in 1986. There were a few side projects you should look into, The Power Station and Arcadia.
Gen X here! Duran Duran is amazing! Every teenaged girl was in love with John Taylor (bass player)/and Simon Le Bon ( lead singer) I was anyway!!😂 check out Hungry Like The Wolf, Save A Prayer, Girls On Film, The Reflex… so many to choose from 🎉
Duran Duran was EVERYTHING to me!! LOL. I was in high school and i was obsessed, John Taylor was "chefs kiss" to me. Back when MTV was all videos, they dominated. I still have all their vinyls. The 80s music was fun for me.
I grew up in the eighties. I thought that this was a catchy tune, but that was it. Coming back to it after listening to a shed-load of other stuff over the years, I find I have different ears. It's brilliant!¬ I had no idea it was so funky!
GenX -- Rio was one of the first music videos I saw on MTV (back when it first aired). I was 9 years old and fell in love with Duran Duran. I'm still a Duranie today.
Gen X here, high school in the 80's. My circle of friends and I were mostly into hard rock, underground, and 70s metal. I was also a beginning drummer jammin with a garage band. The new wave/pop mainstream stuff just seemed too manufactured and electronic for me at the time. I wasnt until I grew up and over the years learning to "function" guitar bass and keyboards with a reasonable understanding, did I start to appreciate the music I ignored. I heard it (a lot), but never really LISTENED to it back then. This music was the the atmosphere of the 80's, it was in the background, everywhere you go. Part of the appreciation I have for it now is its the soundtrack of so many great memories. I also now appreciate the skill and musicianship that went into these songs. The most profound moment of opening my eyes, and ears, was seeing Duran Duran perform live from the studio audience at a Tonight Show with Leno, in its last season. Seeing them mature, playing actual instruments plugged into amps by cords, the human musicianship, even with insignificant flaws and deviation from the recordings Ive heard for decades at this point, I was north of impressed. 16 year old me would have never believe he would grow up to be a Duran Duran fan.
In 1981, when they had their first album I was 12. I had a huge crush on their bass player John Taylor and still do. He is what made me become a fan of theirs. Their music is funky and also innovative still to this day.
My favorite song by them, still a banger. Was in my 20's in the 80's, and this was my young adulthood. They are still touring and still sound great, saw them just a few years ago.
GenX here Duran have been my favorite band since 1983 ❤ blessed that they are still putting out new music and touring. Might as well listen to the whole album of the same name 😊 its a banger, if not definitely listen to Hungry Like the Wolf from this album. Other songs, Planet Earth, Girls on Film, Save a Prayer, Ordinary World
Polo --- I graduated high school in 1983 in West Los Angeles and music was then and still is a huge part of my life. Duran Duran was a great band, musicianship and writing. The first time I heard Duran Duran was at an under 21 nightclub in Beverly Hills that my friends and I would go to in 1979 or '80 and their two hits Planet Earth and Girls On Film were huge hits. Growing up in L.A and being 15 years old in 1980 was the best time and place to grow up if you liked music, girls and partying. The Taylor brothers, bass and guitar did a side project with Robert Palmer on vocals and Tony Thompson of the band Chic on drums called Powerstation that rocked a cover of the '70s Gary Glitter "Bang A Gong" amongst incredible original tunes RIP Robert Palmer Duran Duran's first album and their first two singles Planet Earth and Girls on Film are what 80's music is all about. Duran Duran was the villain in the 1969 film Barbarella staring Jane Fonda when she was about 19 yrs old and absolutely beautiful. The film was soft porn and sci fi cheesy but really good.
Gen X. I remember Duran Duran from my tween to early teens.. I was 10 when this song was released. I got into music early and vividly remember the first broadcasts of MTV as a kid.. and John Taylor is a beast on bass!
I went to high school in the 80’s and one of my best friends was a huge DD fan. We listened to them all the time! I do love the sax! “Come Undone” is a great song.
Duran Duran was a New Romantic-pop band from the 80s with some glam and punk rock influences. I’m a Gen Xer and this was my fave band when I was in middle school. I was INSANE for these guys back then 😂

Not only are they an amazing band, they were video trailblazers when video was still in its infancy.

The bass is insane. John Taylor goes nuts on the bridge.

Duran Duran is a guilty pleasure from the 80s. Try "Hungry like the wolf" or "Save a Prayer".

John Taylor's Bass playing doesn't mess around! It's also sweet to hear the appreciation of Roger Taylor's drum playing.
Big time band. A ton of great hits. I was in my 20's during the whole decade of the 80's.
I've grown to appreciate the music so much more since watching these reactions. I think
I kind of took it for granted all the great groups that were coming out one right after another.
I feel blessed to have experienced it all!
Gen X’r who waited till my 50’s to fall in love with Duran Duran. They deserve so much more credit and respect than they get
I was playing in some bands back then and experienced all of this great music first hand. I'm 80 now, my wife is 67, and still going strong! Thanks for your channel Polo.
Play that f-in' base John! Play that f-in' base John!…👏👏👏
If not every song on this album ("Rio"), then most of them could've made Top 10 or Top 40.
So I'm gonna recommend 1 of their coolest tracks that rarely gets mentioned:
"New Religion"
(it's upbeat, a bit dark, just in a good way; & the execution of the pre-chorus lyrics are badass & fun)
It's not requested to reactors vry much, not bc it's not great but bc it's diff & mainly it gets forgotten as it's not a released single - meaning no vid.
Now, I like that since it can also mean no distraction on 1st listen, given you can always watch a live vid after, & if you like the song you should; esp DD's "Official Live" vid fr/ a Live Concert made into a kinda film/concert, shown 1st on Cinemax I think, then later on Mtv where those songs can be fnd individually on DD's YT Channel, called: "As the Lights Go Down"
Anyway, obvi if you like watching vids then check that 1 out; however, I'mma Simon(vocalist)-girl, so I like studio versions btr bc he layers his vocals, including for most harmonies, vs someone else taking over when live…
Casual fans may not remember NR or ever even heard it since it couldn't get radio play bk then. But I'm guessing most Duranies know it well…
Also, as others have mentioned they still tour globally, while also still making new music. Hell, even their covers are great. And tho their latest studio album has several covers (made for Halloween last yr, w/ additions this yr in a "deluxe edition") I still think their Bowie tribute of "5 Years" made for the fifth anniversary of his death shows how sharp they all still sound.
So if you wanna chk out how good they're doin 4+ decades later, I'd play that vid which has Bowie's piano player joined in…
Take care, & thx for sharing ur DD reaction; I always subscribe as soon as someone does…😉😊
Mercy, the daydreaming I did about these guys in the 80s! Still one of my favorite bands. They have a lot of facets to their music. Glad you're checking them out with an open mind. Thank you and peace!
Baby boy, I was in the Air Force stationed in England 1983-1985.
Loved the '80s and Duran Duran.
GenX here. I was / still am a major “Duranie” (that’s what Duran2 fans are called)
Their videos may seem cheesy now, but compared to other videos of that point, they were groundbreaking.
Gen X here. Saw Duran Duran when I was 16! Love them still.
One of the best bass lines of the 80s.
Travelling from Spain to UK in July to achieve my dream of seeing Duran Duran…can’t wait!
Simon Le Bon has a phenomenal voice and sounds the same live. Excellent band all around - they were part of the soundtrack of the 80s for sure.
LOVE Duran Duran! I was in Beauty school in the early 80s. Prince and Duran Duran...SO MUCH GLAMOUR!
Pretty cool that you like this one. Unexpected.
Totally underrated song.
Duran Duran was late high school and early college for me. Thanks for reminding me how great this song is.
Just saw them play last month and John Taylor was still owning the stage with those bass lines at 62.
They were huge in the 80's and had a few great hits in the 90's (Come Undone, Ordinary World). Still making music and touring
Born in ‘72 I am definitely a child of the 80’s and a big Duran Duran fan. Love your work Polo! Merry Christmas!
My favorite song by them, still a banger. Was in my 20's in the 80's, and this was my young adulthood. They are still touring and still sound great, saw them just a few years ago.
I graduated in 86 I still listen to it on vinyl & still love it thanks for the reaction
GenX here Duran have been my favorite band since 1983 ❤ blessed that they are still putting out new music and touring. Might as well listen to the whole album of the same name 😊 its a banger, if not definitely listen to Hungry Like the Wolf from this album. Other songs, Planet Earth, Girls on Film, Save a Prayer, Ordinary World
Bass bass bass
Verses are amazing
Chorus is just perfect
And a mid section bridge to blow your mind
One of the best songs of all time
Duran Duran has a lot of good songs , great reaction polo !!! 👍👏😁🔥❤️🇺🇲💯 !!!
The Taylor brothers, bass and guitar did a side project with Robert Palmer on vocals and Tony Thompson of the band Chic on drums called Powerstation that rocked a cover of the '70s Gary Glitter "Bang A Gong" amongst incredible original tunes RIP Robert Palmer
Duran Duran's first album and their first two singles Planet Earth and Girls on Film are what 80's music is all about.
Duran Duran was the villain in the 1969 film Barbarella staring Jane Fonda when she was about 19 yrs old and absolutely beautiful. The film was soft porn and sci fi cheesy but really good.
Please please tell me now ...
T-Rex, not Gary Glitter.
None of the Taylors are related.
@shari_m925 --- I always thought they were brothers
Gen X. I remember Duran Duran from my tween to early teens.. I was 10 when this song was released. I got into music early and vividly remember the first broadcasts of MTV as a kid.. and John Taylor is a beast on bass!
I'm a Boomer and was in my 20s in the 80s. Duran Duran is a great band!
I went to high school in the 80’s and one of my best friends was a huge DD fan. We listened to them all the time! I do love the sax! “Come Undone” is a great song.
One of my favorite songs of theirs is WILD BOYS!!!!
I’ve seen them over 40 times Live from 1984-Present . I was 15 -56 yrs old .. enough said⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫✨
Duran Duran was a New Romantic-pop band from the 80s with some glam and punk rock influences. I’m a Gen Xer and this was my fave band when I was in middle school. I was INSANE for these guys back then 😂
