Rick Beato does a great analysis of this song on his channel. He loves that little riff in the background at the beginning of the 2nd and 4th line of the verse. So beautiful.
Recently lost my best friend that I've known since the age of 11, he was an artist, poet and loved grunge/hard rock, he loved this song and I can not listen to it without feeling lost, alone and devastated..he was not supposed to go first...miss him terribly! Struggling to find my ordinary world without him in it...
I know exactly how you're feeling.... My best friend since High School passed away three years ago. He was my one and only ride or die friend that is impossible to replace. I'm still trying to find my, "Ordinary World." 😢😢
This is Simon's masterpiece and the greatest Duran Duran song of all time.. His best friend killed himself and Simon wrote this song to heal himself from the grief.. They play it at every live show And they get more fan mail about this song than any other to this day.. It's incredible.. Simon says before he sings it live at every show that it's about the life you have maybe not the one you wanted but learning to survive the life you were given.. I follow the band all over the world 10 months a year every single year and I cry every single time Simon sings it.. I have 2 severely disabled children and when Simon sings it I feel it to my core. It heals my heart.. My life and my soul.. The band knows me and my life and I never miss a show and I try to never let Simon see me cry when he sings it but he sees me and nods and smiles and last year he came up and wiped my tears as I cried at a show.. Sometimes a song can heal your soul.. This is that song.. My son's first name is Duran after the greatest band in the world.. 😁 He can not speak but you turn on Duran Duran and he lights up like a Christmas tree.. Thank you for reacting to this song.. You should react to more of their music.. Maybe Rio or The Reflex or Wild Boys.. With 16 albums there is plenty to listen to 😁 Long live the greatest band in the world.. Long Live Duran Duran 🙌💕
This song is a part of a trilogy about David Miles (his self-killed childhood close friend). The first one is 'Do You Believe in Shame?' and the last one is 'Out of my Mind'.
My husband died a year ago Aug 14th. I just took my first vacation in over 4 years ago after being a caregiver as well. I can relate to this, trying to fit into an ordinary world. Sebs, you and Ally rock! I watch all the time! ❤
I can identify with this song. I lost my brother when he was 31 years old. I was stuck in deep grief and couldn’t understand why people I would pass on the street were carrying on with their lives, laughing and didn’t have a care in the world. I had to realize that there was an ordinary world out there and with the help of God, I would survive.
Very sorry for your loss.. music like this makes us feel it but it's not a bad thing. Appreciate the time you had with him.. I'm there with you in the feels
This is my favorite band of all time!!! I’ve seen several times in concert!! They always make me smile!!! They still make albums and tour!! Simon always has a way with lyrics, beautiful. Go down this rabbit hole my friend they have great songs!
My sister and I both loved this song a lot; it became even more meaningful to me after my sister passed away in 2009. I love it, but its meaning has changed for me since its release. Great reaction, thank you.
This is one of the deepest, widest rabbit holes you will EVER fall into. Official video for Save a Prayer or Rio is a great next choice. You got introduced to 90s "comeback" (they never left) DD. You need a look at 80s "when they ruled the world" DD.
Duran Duran never got the respect that they were do as musicians. They were written off as "poster boys" on teenage girl's walls. But they were truly fantastic musicians and brilliant at their craft.
Duran Duran is one of my all time favorites. I’ve seen them live at least 5 times, they are everything. I can’t imagine my life without their music. Glad you found them. I love their older stuff - Sound of Thunder, Friends of Mine, Planet Earth, Careless Memories. Hungry like the wolf, Rio, Save a Prayer, New Moon on Monday….the list goes on. They did a cover of the Make me Smile - EPIC! Andy Taylor is an amazing guitar player. Best band ever. Their 007 Bond song A View to a Kill is awesome! They were the biggest band of the 80’s - I love this band and listen to them on the constant!
The first time I heard this song, I sobbed. There are so many lyrics, like in the chorus, "there's an ordinary world somehow I have to find" that hit hard and captured my feelings perfectly. A neighbor started molesting me when I was a very young girl back in the 1960s. All of a sudden, I didn't understand the world at all and couldn't find any way to explain what was happening to anyone around me. They all were living in what had been my ordinary world. The line, "where is the life that I recognize?" was devastating. As you noted, though, the song conveys a determination to find a way back to an ordinary world in both the music and lyrics. Thanks for your reactions. It's a pleasure to see you enjoy songs that are long standing favorites.
So true it's not easy letting go lost my brother and sister last may 2023 just day's apart that's what you do is learn to live and move on day to day. 😓😢😭
This song was part of Duran Duran's rebirth in 1993 from their 80s success, marked by a lot of excess and hubris (no one was immune from it). They were great then, but this self-titled album (also called The Wedding Album) showed a band that had been through the wars, so to speak, and come out alive and changed for the better. They didn't repudiate their past, and I don't think anyone would expect them to, but their maturity came through in spades in lyrics and music. I still remember it as the first part of a one-two punch of bands I liked reflecting on the difficulties of life in hopeful ways without denying pain (the other album came the next year, 1994, Pink Floyd's The Division Bell). Do check out their 80s material, but also listen to the other big cut from this album: "Come Undone."
I lost one of my childhood friends a few years before this song came out, and I struggled with my feelings, because his death was so senseless and tragic. The first time I heard this song,it gave me clarity, and helped me start to heal. I know that sounds corny, but it's true. Duran Duran is an awesome band.
I forgot this song existed. It's painful to listen. It reminds of losing Cheryl in a car accident.never got a chance to say good bye. Still hurts today. That was over 20 years ago. I still miss her.
Thank you so much for covering Duran Duran (my favorite band since 1982). They just got admitted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. One of their most beautiful songs is Do You Believe in Shame (that the lead singer Simon LeBon wrote about the death of his best friend. He wrote 3 songs about this. Ordinary World is one). Their best songs are not their biggest hits, imo, but their music videos are legendary for their movie like quality. They got their start just as MTV was debuting. Every album is just a little bit different and their still going strong.
u r 1 cool dude, sebs. im 64 and i really appreciate a young guy like u that truly enjoys all the music like this that i loved (and still do) when i was in my 20's, at the time living that entire 1980's decade in LA.. went to many live rock concerts back then, including david bowie, the stones , tom petty, elton john, journey, styx, foreigner, duran duran, springsteen etc. - it was a very special time in my life back then.
Yes, please check out more Duran Duran. This song is beautiful, it is what made me a DD fan in the first place. You really hit the nail on the head as far as the song's meaning as well. It is sad but also incredibly uplifting. I highly recommend checking out 'Come Undone' next. It's from the same album (from 1993) and has a really cool "liquid" effect with the guitar. But after that, do look into their work from the 1980's. Their peak, commercially, was around 1982-'84 with songs like "Rio", "Hungry Like the Wolf", "Save a Prayer", "the Reflex", "Wild Boys", "A View to a Kill", etc...
Teenager of the 80s here. Def Leppard and Duran Duran were my two favorite bands of that time. Both bands just knew how to make not just great music, but hit after hit after hit. Which made them most-listened to favs. Duran Duran's songs are always some of the most poetic in the industry. You might want to try their song, "Come Undone," next -- it's really great. and has one of my favorite lines (poetically speaking): ""Happy Birthday to You" was created for you." What a line to deliver to a girl, right?
Simon, the lead singer, wrote a trilogy of songs to a friend that committed suicide. The other two are Out Of My Mind and Do You Believe In Shame... both are great tracks you should check out as they are deeper cuts. Ordinary World was a worldwide hit, but the other two are far less known outside of the DD faithful.
They were the lookers (cute boys) of their time. Try out "Hunghy Like a Wolf", "A view to a Kill" or "Come Undone" They were huge on MTV in the early eighties.
They were not taken seriously by many at the time because of it. These guys could always play with the best of them, though. Early DD songs made me appreciate a good bass line.
The complexity of the arrangement of this song, the melancholy but serene mood it puts you in, is amazing. One of the very best pop songs ever recorded.
This takes me back. They were great. My suggestion to you is Queensryche if you are travelling to the 80's. I love watching people react to new music. I truly love your reactions.
Duran Duran ruled the 1980s and early 1990s. This song just grabs your heart and leaves a mark. Truly one of the best songs of the 1990s and actually of the last 50 years. They have TONS of awesome hits over the last 5 decades. Come Undone from the same album is another incredible song.
I found an acoustic version of this song a few years ago, and it brings back memories of lying on a beach in Greece, listening to this song, a drinking a cold beer. It's amazing how certain songs can immediately transport you back to another time and place, and the memories are so vivid.
I was a teenager in high school when Duran Duran hit. Me and my circle of friends, all musicians and hardcore music fanatics, were into all kinds of stuff - prog, oldies, metal & hardcore, old school outlaw country, etc. We were also teenaged young men in Texas and going through that wannabe “tough guy” phase and preferred music with an edge. Duran Duran were pretty boys from England playing pop rock perfection, and all the girls swooned over them. We really wanted to hate them, but the music and song craft was undeniable, and in the end, that’s all that really matters. We also discovered that getting tickets to their shows was a sure fire way to get dates with the hottest girls. Good times. Great band and still in my rotation after all these years. Gotta check out Rio at some point - one of the sickest basslines ever. Edit - like many others have mentioned, this song was a healing balm after the heartbreak of failed relationships and divorce. Beautiful song.
This is my all-time favorite Duran Duran song. Simon wrote the profound lyrics to help him with grief from a close friend’s sudden death. Raw emotions often produce the “realest” lyrics. If you check out Save a Prayer, you’ll also find real emotions in the music and lyrics. This band is totally under-rated! But it’s great to see them get recognition now, as the very real artists they are!!🌻
OH I just saw them in concert last month! They were so amazing!! So many great songs, great video's! They have a great new album out right now. It is about the death of a great friend and trying do grieve the loss. Thanks for the reaction!
The singer, Simon Le Bon, wrote this song after his best friend passed away. He wrote 2 other great songs about missing his friend: Do you believe in shame, Out of my Mind. Love Duran Duran music!
I would send some cash but can't. You and Ali and one more person speak to my heart. I love you all. I'm in Colorado. A I wish you all the best I the world God speed. Love to you and the little girls who are adorable 💕 🎉😢
Omg.... My teenage loves. My whole room including ceiling was Duran Duran. Love them so much still. 😍😍😍😍😍 Check out Rio... Or Come Undone .... Such awesome music. Takes me back to the skating rink😆
I love this song so very much... Every time I hear it, I'm back at the grave side, for my grandma, for my grandpa, for my girlfriend... for my son. For all those who have left and are no longer with us. No longer here, in this ordinary world. This song makes me weep almost every single time.
Really great band to dive into. You'll get a lot of song suggestions and they will all be good ones. As with any great band, it's always good to listen to the various phases of their careers. Duran Duran's early phase was a fun and youthful New Wave sound. They then matured into a great synth-Pop band, then with their synth-adult contemporary sound (like the song you just listened to). Finally, in the 2000's to today they have become a cool EDM band working with producers like Timbaland and Mark Ronson, as well as legendary legacy dance music producers like Nile Rodgers and Giorgio Moroder. Last year, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Yeah, brother you got me. Lost my mom and little sister 3 weeks apart at the end of April and first part of May. This song I love as it brings me some joy and helps release a little pain at the same time. Think you always do a great job on your reactions. Thank you
I am more familiar with their songs from the '82-'84 era, so it was interesting to hear one of their newer songs. My sister was a huge Duran Duran fan when we were teenagers and had their posters all over her room (along with Shawn Cassidy, I believe). Now, her 20-year-old son is a fan (although I think he is still a bigger Beatles/John Lennon fan and spent many years wanting to be a Michael Jackson impersonator).
Hauntingly beautiful song that has touched so many. The notes that he hits at the end just really hit home. I would suggest “Save a Prayer” for more beautiful Melodie’s but “The Chauffeur” is lyrical perfection in my book for the imagery that it evokes. The Deftones, Korn and the Sneaker Pimps have covered that song.
Ordinary World and Come Undone are my 2 favorite DD songs of all time. Very moody, very introspective, and kinda mysterious. Trademark Duran Duran ingredients at their best.
These guys (minus lead guitarist Andy Taylor) have been making music together since they were teenagers in the late 70's. This song came out ten years after they were the toast of MTV. Andy had left the band, replaced by Warren Coucarella (sp). Andy rejoined for a while but left again and is now battling terminal cancer. I have followed this band for over 40 years and their music has always been playing on the soundtrack of my life. This one still hurts a bit because of things I was going through when it came out (the death of my parents three months apart and getting sober). But these guys are old friends of mine and we understand each other. Great reaction!
First concert ever on February 7, 1984 with my bestest friend in the entire world. She was killed in a car accident in 1999 and this song encompasses all the feelings. Where is my friend when I need you most.....gone away. 😢 I still break down when I hear this song. I'm ugly crying right now. So yeah, I understand all of the feelings that Simon expresses here.
Simon LeBon said he wrote this song to help him get over the death of a good friend. But he said the meaning of the lyrics can be applied to many different hardships. After reading the lyrics, and watching the video, I got the impression it was about a failed relationship. Where the man is singing about his ex wife or girlfriend. Supposedly they used to fight sometimes (or a lot). During when his ex partner told him, "Pride will tear this relationship apart." Meaning winning the argument wasn't always more important than just getting along. Now that she is gone, he has to accept going from the bliss of being in love, to the ordinary world where he is single and alone again. And he says he knows his problems pail in comparison to the big problems of the world. But to him, losing her is still a big deal.
This is one of the finest songs ever written.
utter perfection.
Rick Beato does a great analysis of this song on his channel. He loves that little riff in the background at the beginning of the 2nd and 4th line of the verse. So beautiful.
It is a masterpiece.
True that! Rick doubts whether they "knew what they were doing"..... How so? I wonder
That’s for sure. This song is one of the best ever written . The chord progressions are amazing
Recently lost my best friend that I've known since the age of 11, he was an artist, poet and loved grunge/hard rock, he loved this song and I can not listen to it without feeling lost, alone and devastated..he was not supposed to go first...miss him terribly! I know exactly how you're feeling.... My best friend since High School passed away three years ago. He was my one and only ride or die friend that is impossible to replace. I'm still trying to find my, "Ordinary World." 😢😢
They are from Birmingham England and they started in 1978. They are still in the business 45 years strong.
He wrote this song about a good friend who died. He struggled with depression after. That is what inspired this song.
Come Undone by Duran Duran is absolutely worth checking out
This is Simon's masterpiece and the greatest Duran Duran song of all time.. His best friend killed himself and Simon wrote this song to heal himself from the grief.. They play it at every live show And they get more fan mail about this song than any other to this day.. It's incredible.. Sono nella tua condizione. Anche mio figlio si calma e gioisce ad ascoltare questa canzone!
This song is a part of a trilogy about David Miles (his self-killed childhood close friend). The first one is 'Do You Believe in Shame?' and the last one is 'Out of my Mind'.
This is one of the most beautiful songs of all time.
A favorite of mine
My husband died a year ago Aug 14th. I just took my first vacation in over 4 years ago after being a caregiver as well. I can relate to this, trying to fit into an ordinary world. Sebs, you and Ally rock! I watch all the time! ❤
I can identify with this song. I lost my brother when he was 31 years old. I was stuck in deep grief and couldn’t understand why people I would pass on the street were carrying on with their lives, laughing and didn’t have a care in the world. They were The Beatles of the 80's. Absolute hysteria wherever they went.
This is my favorite band of all time!!! I’ve seen several times in concert!! They always make me smile!!! They still make albums and tour!! Simon always has a way with lyrics, beautiful. Go down this rabbit hole my friend they have great songs!
After 30 years ,this song is still peerless! ❤
My sister and I both loved this song a lot; it became even more meaningful to me after my sister passed away in 2009. I love it, but its meaning has changed for me since its release. Great reaction, thank you.
My favorite of their songs. Reminds me of losing my dad and the grief.
And most of the members were self-taught. Several don't even read music. John Taylor (bass player) is always highly rated by his peers.
They were the biggest band of the 80’s - I love this band and listen to them on the constant!
I've only gotten to see them twice (2015 and 2023), and they are still amazing live. Just as good as in the studio.
Simon wrote this song about his friend who died of an overdose!
They are THE reason why I started making music myself.... my heroes.
The first time I heard this song, I sobbed. There are so many lyrics, like in the chorus, "there's an ordinary world somehow I have to find" that hit hard and captured my feelings perfectly. A neighbor started molesting me when I was a very young girl back in the 1960s. The line, "where is the life that I recognize?" was devastating. As you noted, though, the song conveys a determination to find a way back to an ordinary world in both the music and lyrics.
Thanks for your reactions. It's a pleasure to see you enjoy songs that are long standing favorites.
You did this song justice.
It's hopeful and sorrowful at the the same time.
Utterly beautiful.
Love them. I've been a Duranie for the past 40 years (Was 14 when I first heard them)
So true it's not easy letting go lost my brother and sister last may 2023 just day's apart that's what you do is learn to live and move on day to day. 😓😢😭

One of the best British bands of the 1980ies!
Duran Duran = Class and Coolness
Even today....he STILL has that same voice....it is just amazing to listen to
Biggest band in the world for awhile. They’re amazing.
This song got me through my divorce. As well as Undone. ❤❤
I forgot this song existed. It's painful to listen. It reminds of losing Cheryl in a car accident.never got a chance to say good bye. Still hurts today. That was over 20 years ago. I still miss her.
'Hungry like a wolf' & Rio' are another couple great Duran Duran tunes.
I think you would enjoy Hungry Like A Wolf. It was the first song I heard of Duran Duran as a teenager. I loved it.
Another Duran Duran great is 'Come Undone' You'll love It!
Thank you so much for covering Duran Duran (my favorite band since 1982). They just got admitted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Duran Duran opened for Bowie on one tour. My favorite band ever, since 1983.
One of my favs is Rio, due to the rhythm section.
Yes, please check out more Duran Duran. This song is beautiful, it is what made me a DD fan in the first place. You really hit the nail on the head as far as the song's meaning as well. It is sad but also incredibly uplifting.

I love this song. Cathartic for me during my divorce. Duran Duran were one of the demi-gods of the 80s! Check out The Reflex!
Their best song ever!! But also just a great song PERIOD
One of my top favorite bands still to this day.
...have to see them unplugged... one of the greatest rock/pop concerts of the century
Simon, the lead singer, wrote a trilogy of songs to a friend that committed suicide. This song has a healing power, it does helps
to survive to bad and sad things that happens in life, it is my safe place to go when I feel down!
They were the lookers (cute boys) of their time. Try out "Hunghy Like a Wolf", "A view to a Kill" or "Come Undone" They were huge on MTV in the early eighties.
Girls on Film!
The Reflex!
They were not taken seriously by many at the time because of it. These guys could always play with the best of them, though. Early DD songs made me appreciate a good bass line.
Love Duran Duran! Favorite band of the 80’s!
This is a great, "newer" song from them. I loved their stuff in high school.
The complexity of the arrangement of this song, the melancholy but serene mood it puts you in, is amazing. One of the very best pop songs ever recorded.
Yeah, it's about grieving and so true. One of the best. Liked your reaction.
This takes me back. They were great. My suggestion to you is Queensryche if you are travelling to the 80's. I love watching people react to new music. I truly love your reactions.
My favorite Duran Duran song. You should hear him sing it with Pavarotti.
Listen to "Come undone" another great song.
I heard the group awhile ago. One of my favorites
I found an acoustic version of this song a few years ago, and it brings back memories of lying on a beach in Greece, listening to this song, a drinking a cold beer. It's amazing how certain songs can immediately transport you back to another time and place, and the memories are so vivid.

The singer, Simon Le Bon, wrote this song after his best friend passed away. He wrote 2 other great songs about missing his friend: Do you believe in shame, Out of my Mind. Love Duran Duran music!
Brilliant song, THX for the lovely reaction...greets from germany 🥰
I would send some cash but can't. You and Ali and one more person speak to my heart. I love you all. I'm in Colorado. A I wish you all the best I the world God speed. Love to you and the little girls who are adorable 💕 🎉😢

Check out Rio... Or Come Undone .... Such awesome music. Takes me back to the skating rink😆
This is my favorite song of theirs, the second would be undone
Absolutely the best Duran Duran song
They have so many great songs! "New Moon on Monday," "Rio," "Hungry Like The Wolf," "A View To A Kill," "Wild Boys"
Duran Duran is brilliant. Still going strong. The Chauffeur is my favourite tune of theirs.
I love this song so very much... Every time I hear it, I'm back at the grave side, for my grandma, for my grandpa, for my girlfriend... for my son. For all those who have left and are no longer with us. No longer here, in this ordinary world. This song makes me weep almost every single time.
OMG!!! Loooove Duran Duran! Pleeeease do more Duran Duran and keep up the Queen reactions !! 😊❤
This song was written about Simon's friend who died . (The lead singer)
Ordinary world is a beautiful but very sad song about loss.
That song makes me cry every time i hear it,,,#1 Duran Duran song ever!!1
Thank you
The grief and pain you experience during the loss of a loved one is unique, yet all of us feel.
A tragically beautiful song.
I believe you will enjoy the journey down this road.
First time watcher, awesome reaction to this song, definitely need more Duran Duran. Keep up the great work 👍🏻
It's my favorite song in the world.
A must for my memorial when the time comes.
I forgot to mention, they are still touring!!
Great analysis. My all-time favorite by Duran Duran. Them at the highest level. Timeless classic song.
Come Undone and New Moon On Monday are my personal favorites from Duran Duran… I’m seeing them live for the first time on August 26th!!
"Rio", "The Reflex", "Hungry Like a Wolf", "Girls in Film".
Ordinary World and Come Undone are my 2 favorite DD songs of all time. Very moody, very introspective, and kinda mysterious. Trademark Duran Duran ingredients at their best.
Great band and song. You should also check out the Duran Duran hits "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Is There Something I Should Know?"
This is the best song. Takes me back.
Welcome to the Duran Duran fan club!! ❤ You need to check out their song Wild Boys to get a completely different experience 😂
Do your research and listen from the beginning of there career.. class 👌👌👌 I think you would enjoy
Simon wrote this song about the loss of a friend. This was how he dealt with their passing.
One of those songs that brings you to tears and you just don't know why.
FYI, The song is about Simon Le Bon, the singer, friend's suicide.
My favorite song from Duran Duran. They have great concerts. Love John Taylor
Simon's voice here is amazing. Top notch.
This song makes me cry! I lost my sister a year ago and life will never be the same.
Nice reaction and review
I listen to this song weekly
So glad you covered it🎉
