"Ordinary World," fundamentally, is about vocalist & primary lyricist Simon Le Bon "still" processing the loss of his childhood & close friend, David Miles, who had passed away five years prior in 1986 to writing "Ordinary World" in 1991. The song is not only inspired by Miles but it is also influenced by The Gulf War (1990-1991) that was prevalent during the making of this song. "Ordinary World" is the second part in a trilogy of songs that centers around Le Bon & Miles' passing. The first song was written soon after Miles' death & it is called, "Do You Believe In Shame?" found on Duran Duran's "Big Thing" album released in 1988 & also as a single in 1989. The song can also be found on the motion picture soundtrack for the film "Tequila Sunrise" starring Michelle Pfeiffer. "Out Of My Mind" concludes the trilogy & was released in 1997 as a single from Duran Duran's "Medazzaland" album in 1997. The track was also the main theme for the motion picture "The Saint" starring Val Kilmer. Of course if one speaks to Le Bon about the song's meaning, he will tell you to form your own interpretation of the song. Le Bon typically doesn't explain the meaning of his lyrics to his songs & prefers the listener to make up their own conclusion. It is rare for him to expound on their meaning but with the aforesaid trilogy of songs referenced, he was more so compelled to share the inspiration behind them due to the nature of the topic.
Classic 90s Duran Duran… the song was actually written about the loss of someone close to Simon. And the album version is longer with even more amazing guitar from Warren 🖤DD
I absolutely adore this song, my friends band were playing a local festival and asked me to sing this with them as the lead singer couldn’t hit the notes. I’d recently split with my son’s mum and the words resonated with me. He sat on the front of the stage looking up at me and my family were in the crowd. It was such a moment I’ll never forget!
The song is more about grieving the death of a close one but it could certainly apply to a romantic relationship. My recommendation to you: you need more Duran Duran culture in your life. Still making great new music today!
Duran Duran is one of the best British bands, so they are so creative. Unlike most rock bands who only use guitars and drums, Duran must be talented to use and mix so many instruments when making songs.

🎉🎉🎉well what can I say I've been a die hard Duranie since 1981 was 12 years old now 55 still a die hard Duranie 🎉🎉🎉 this song is epic brilliant awesome amazing one of my favourites by the best band ever on planet earth 🌎🌍🌎 this is off the wedding album you need to listen to come on done off the same album it's hit 259 million views on RUclips 🎉🎉🎉 enjoy if you watch it thanx 🎉🎉🎉
Early Duran Duran were part of the background soundtrack to my junior high years. This song was a few years later. I may still have a soft spot for songs like 'Wild Boys', 'Come Undone', 'The Reflex'. 'A View to a Kill' was a James Bond theme song.
Simon LeBon (lead singer) lost a close friend to suicide, and wrote a triogy of songs to help him cope. The other two are Do You Believe In Shame (which is one of my personal fav DD songs of all time) and Out Of My Mind. I think the thing that really resonated with people about this song, at least, all of those that have faced the loss of a loved one or some other true tradgedy in life, was that he wasn't looking for happiness, or the best outcome, or anything "good"... he's so depressed and filled with sadness, he's begging for just an ordinary world. when you're depressed, just the idea of ordinary can be such a huge step in the right direction from where you are. The lyric in this song that always breaks me is, "what is happening to me, crazy some'd say, where is my friend when I need you most... gone away..." and right as that line brings you to tears, the chorus triumphantly comes back in with, "but I won't cry for yesterday... there's an ordinary world, somehow, I have to find..." which always fills me with emotion. Happy as he's trying to go on living in the face of his friend's decision not to, but also sad... as he's not found his ordinary world yet and does greatly miss his friend. If you don't do the other two on channel, they are both worth a listen in your personal time. To give you a little taste, my fave line from Out Of My Mind is, "how could you dare to become so real... when you're just a ghost in me..." Again, I think anyone that's lost a love one feels that. You can hear them still, feel them even. Hear their laugh in your head, but as that good feeling subsides, and reality comes back into focus, you remember they're gone... just a ghost in your head. For Do You Believe In Shame, the lyrics are more on-point... and where this line or that line are great, the whole of the song is what makes it special, as again, he's more on point and there's no guessing as to what he's talking about and the pain and confusion he's feeling... which makes sense as this is the first of the trilogy, so likely writen closer to his friend's death when the emotions were still more raw. Though some of the lyrics are better, my favorite is the build towards the end of the song with the lyrics, "Do you believe in love, do you believe in life... cause I believe there's a little part of you inside of me... that will never die..."
The funny thing about it is that... my association for the song isn't the original, and the same goes for Hungry Like the Wolf XD For that song, it is the cover by Reel Big Fish that is most ingrained in my mind, and for this song... it is the variation that they had in Dance Dance Revolution... amazing how covers can overtake originals like that XD
Was always a fan. It wasn't until I was a little older that I looked back on their 80s stuff and realized how much I loved it. It was so upbeat. Most of it. That's why I never could reconcile what was going on with this album. It was so melancholy. It was dark. I know the band had lost a couple of guys, but it seemed like the whole mood, tone, and attitude of this latest edition had changed. Still a good album, but far and away more depressed than anything before it.
I'm gonna try to bring an old Nu-Metal band alot of people may not have heard of to your attention. The band is Adema and two of their best songs are Unstable and Immortal. Amazing band, you should check them out.
Duran Duran is one of my favorite lol time 80s Nu Wave. This song actually came out when I was in high school in 92 or 93 I believe. You really must do: Girls on Film, Wild Boys, Come Undone, View To A Kill, Reflex, Union of the Snake, Electric Barbarella. Geez there are too many great songs by this band. I’m a child of the 80s so this is my era!
Nu Wave is not "New Wave" music. New Wave came out in the mid 1970s & lasted to about 1984 with bands like Duran Duran, Blondie, Talking Heads, The Cure, Simple Minds & the like unless you are just trying to be clever with the spelling, mate.
I agree with you that this isn’t typical Duran Duran. My opinion has always been this song is head and shoulders above everything else they did. And that’s no knock on them. I love their other songs. But “Ordinary World” is a brilliant, beautiful and unique track. By the way, I noticed you haven’t done any Band Maid in over a year! My goodness. If you appreciate well written songs like this one, please consider returning to the Maids. For me? I would love your opinion on “Puzzle,” official live. Lyrics are painful and poetic, and the music is what I call “cinematic rock.” But let’s see what you think! ❤
This is the "new" lineup (at the time), since their original classic quintet lineup that endured the 80s : Simon LeBon Nick Rhodes Andy Taylor Roger Taylor John Taylor (no relation between the Taylors). I don't have all the names of this new lineup, other than to say that Simon and Nick remained, along with just one of the Taylors (not sure which one).
I wouldn't call this the "new" lineup at the time. Duran Duran became a trio of John Taylor, Nick Rhodes & Simon Le Bon in 1986 when Roger Taylor & Andy Taylor both quit the band. Warren Cuccurullo filled in on guitar doing some guitar work & touring with the band in 1986 until he became a member in 1989. Ordinary World was released in the fall of 1992 & it was the second album working with Cuccurullo as a Duran Duran member & Cuccurullo's fourth album with the band since 1986. Duran Duran's iteration since the band's co-founding & as you note, no Taylor's are related: 1978: Duran Duran co-founded by John Taylor & Stephen Duffy with Nick Rhodes joining soon hereafter. 1979: Roger Taylor joins the band & John Taylor switches from guitar to bass. Andy Taylor (Guitars) writes & records four song's for the album then quits the band to pursue a solo career during the recording sessions. 1986 - 1989: Nick, John & Simon 1989: Duran Duran return to a five-piece band from a trio as Warren Cuccurullo (Guitars) & Sterling Campbell (Drums) become members of the band. 1989-1990: Nick, John, Simon, Warren Cuccurullo (Guitars) & Sterling Campbell (Drums) 1990: Sterling Campbell leaves the band. 1995: Roger Taylor plays drums on Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" & Elvis Costello's "Watching The Detectives" for Duran Duran's Thank You (Covers album). 1990 - 1997: Nick, John, Simon & Warren 1997: John Taylor (Co-founder & Bassist) quits Duran Duran during the Medazzaland album recording sessions. 1997 - 2001: Nick, Simon & Warren 2001: Warren Cuccurullo (Guitars) is kicked out of Duran Duran for reunion with John Taylor (Bass) who left in 1997 & with Andy Taylor (Guitars) & Roger Taylor (Drums), who both left the band in 1986. 2001 - 2006: Nick, John, Simon, Andy & Roger 2006: Duran Duran record their Reportage album & during the recording sessions, Andy Taylor leaves Duran Duran for a second time. 2006 to present: Nick, John, Simon & Roger 2023: Andy Taylor is invited to play the majority of guitar on Duran Duran's Halloween inspired album titled "Danse Macabre," which is mostly an album of cover songs. Warren Cuccurullo also plays on two songs on the album. 1980 - 1986: Nick Rhodes (Keyboards), John Taylor (Bass), Simon Le Bon (Vocals & Lyrics), Andy Taylor (Guitars) & Roger Taylor (Drums) 1986 - 1989: Nick, John & Simon 1989 - 1990: Nick, John, Simon, Warren Cuccurullo (Guitars) & Sterling Campbell (Drums) 1990 - 1997: Nick, John, Simon and Warren 1997 - 2001: Nick, Simon and Warren 2001 - 2006: Nick, John, Simon, Andy and Roger 2006 to present: Nick, John, Simon and Roger

This song brought respect to the band as more than just a video-friendly pop act. Beautiful song!

As a Gen X'er, Duran Duran were my Beatles, like Billy Idol was my Elvis and Def Leppard, my Led Zeppelin.
I always look forward to their next song.
That was a good song
