What really makes this song stand out to me is, as the story goes, when it was time to record it Freddie was very ill, and Brian was worried if he would even be able to sing it. Freddie downed some vodka and said "I'll fucking do it darling", then nailed it in one take. A true legend. There will never be another Freddie Mercury
Very true. What a lot of people don’t seem to realise is Freddie was LITERALLY on his deathbed when he found the strength to get in the studio to record it. I will always be amazed at how he managed to give such a performance in the condition he was in. A LEGEND TO THE END
Freddie was one of only a handful of celebrities who I cried about when I heard they died. To this day, whenever I hear this song I can't help but shed a tear. He was truly unique.
To me was him and Ayrton Senna, the sequence of events that weekend was tragic and sad. Both were men of the people I guess thats why, you could see they were real. But I know i will have my 3rd one soon in John Williams :S
Oh yeah... completely... I'll never forget that evening news on November 25th 1991 (the day after he left us), it's like a moment frozen in time for me, i was in complete shock, couldn't believe it. My mum looked at me a asked me if i was alright, i think i remember just saying: "Freddie died...", couldn't even speak right... 33 years gone by and it's still crystal clear in my mind.
@@AgenteusaRR Yes. Ayrton was the same to me too, also remember crystal clear the news that day, the race, the accident, the flight to the hospital, and the "brain death" news... Heart breaking. I was an obsessive F1 fan in the 80's and 90's, after that day i never watched an F1 race again...
This song always gives me huge goosebumps, it always makes me cry so much, not for sadness just the sheer power of it, Freddie was an incredible singer there will be no-one like him ever. ❤️
The final part of Brian's unintentional Freddie trilogy: Who Wants To Live Forever?, Scandal, The Show Must Go On. I remember watching the video when it came out a few weeks before he died. It felt like being at a wake. Long before social media, everyone knew what was coming.
This song is unique, it is heartbreaking, but powerful in a way. "I'll face it with a grin!,I'm never giving in! On with the show!" and the guitar. It's about doing what you do better than anyone, through it all.
I was in college when Freddie passed. Having been a Queen fan since my earliest memories it was just shocking to lose him. The one thing that struck me and is still incredible is how the rest of the band dealt with his illness and death. John, Roger and Brian all came together to protect Freddie during those last years of his life and have continued to protect his legacy in the nearly 33 years since. They really are a class act.
I have been a Queen fan ever since I first heard them in the early 70s. Four great musicians led by Freddie Mercury. The GOAT, the best frontman of any band, ever. As others have said, he was very ill when this was recorded and it just shows how good he was.
Fred gave us 1000 percent right till the end ...the greatest frontman that ever lived gave us one of the best vocals of his career in this song ..he left us shortly after this RECORDING
Written by Brian May. If you listen closely to the lyrics Freddie is ACTUALLY singing about his impending death and how he was on stage and his personality
This was released as a single and a couple of weeks later Freddie had died. Big shock. I always think of Freddie’s heavy makeup to hide the KS. And “My soul is painted with the wings of butterflies” reminds me of the lyrics from that wonderful Freddie composition - My Fairy King “someone has drained the colour from my wings”. First album to last album. ❤
I will never forget when I first saw this video at the end of a British weekly music TV programme called Top Of The Pops, two days after he'd passed. It hit me like a steam train and has left a mark on me to this day. This song was and remains my favourite Queen song and no one will ever be able to cover this and do it justice like Freddie could. Nobody. Its one of those songs that should never ever be covered by anyone else.
It’s a song that inspires you to stand up after every fall & when it’s over offers comfort for those you leave behind , the four of them have delivered some of the most iconic songs of all time and there audience keeps growing, .
Yep - thanks for this, Ray.. made to make you cry.. it usually brings tears for me... appreciate your reaction... (mostly written by Brian May, who wasn't sure Freddie would be able to sing it... but according to Brian, Freddie just said "I'll F*ckin do it darling.. downed a shot a vodka, simply "lacerated" that vocal..."
When guitarist Brian May was concerned that Freddie Mercury was too ill to sing The Show Must Go On, Freddie took a shot of vodka and said: "I'll f****n do it, darling!" Recorded his vocals in 1 take. Freddie passed away 9 months after the album was released. Freddie only co-wrote the 1st verse with Brian May, everything else was written by May.
This song came out when I was about 8 years old and my father was a Queen fan and had followed them from a young age. I heard there music growing up I never knew the meaning behind the song when it was released. But this will always be one of my favourite Queen songs
I’m not a person who uses words like “favourite”…”the best”…”the greatest”….as I feel they place limitations on us and they are mostly subjective anyway. However, this song is so uniquely special to me that I do say my favourite because it literally saved my life and the darkest time of my life! I hope that if I’m given a celebration of life gathering that this song will be played as really defines who I am!
Interesting fact: The video for “Show Must Go On” was compiled and put together rather quickly. It was released in November of 1991; just a few hours after Freddie died from AIDS-related pneumonia; and it was playing quite a bit in rotation on MTV. For fans in the USA, some of the footage from past music videos and concerts many had never seen before. This was due to Queen focusing on either touring or making music videos for audiences outside of America.
Yeah well when they didn't get the video of I Want To Break Free and the fact that they blamed Freddie for most of it, even though the song was written by John and the fact the video idea was Roger's/Roger's Girlfriend at the time idea to cross dress and to pay homage to Corrie, you couldn't blame him for blacklisting the states.
I can't help but to cry when I hear some of their songs.. this one almost always hits me like a ton of bricks. These are the Days of Our Lives hurts to watch, but the hardest two songs to listen to are Motherlove and No One But You. Not sure if you heard Motherlove yet so I won't give away any spoilers, but if you know the story, you will cry too at the beginning of the last verse.
I remember in november of 1991 this video was start for all the world brodcast tv in the same time when the news station get breaking news about Freddie's death. It was horrable sad to see this video in the same time. Few month erlier they gest Britis Music Awards for this song. Everone was in shock in that time. Music Queen sty forever. It's song about daying... about gone from material to soul existing in eternity.
By the time 'The show must go one' was released as a single by Queen in 1991, it was the last song on the album 'Innuendo'... Freddie Mercury was too ill to appear on camera anymore... The song itself captured the end of the band; after all is done... life keeps going. Freddie's last appearance was on the music video for the single 'These are the days of our lives'... and he looked thin and frail. The other members of Queen were always contributing backing vocals (and even lead vocals) to Queen songs since their first record... Their vocal harmonies were a trademark sound of the band.
@@alexandremaireno-ni4ec John never sang on recordings...sometimes he sang live, but not on recordings. It's been confirmed by numerous people in Queen's entourage...
It’s not that he was ill and couldn’t go on camera. This single was released after he died that’s why there’s no new video made with him in it. He had already assed.
@raynepromotions The show must go on was released on the 16 October 1991, merely a month before he passed. Of course he was too ill to appear on video, hence the collage video we got.
"The Show Must Go On" was a brilliant song that Freddie knew the end was coming, but "Mother Love" is more sadder: Mercury never got to complete it as he died midway in production, and Brian finished singing the last verse.
Of course, still hearing this song, as for, for different reasons, These are the Days, the one that Always tear my heart and soul apart is Mother, especially the 1st verse's ending 😢😢 , i really recommend this one also... With some tissues near by 😉👍
This is a great song written by Brian. Freddie was too ill at this point to do a video. He was proping himself up on the desk to sing. Brian said that as he was writing this song he had a vision of a sad clown who painted a smile on his face to entertain his audience. One would think he was referring to Freddie and perhaps in a way he was, but Freddie was not sad and never complained. Brian seems to be a fairly emotional guy and I think that it is Brian who is sad. Sad to see the suffering of his friend and bandmate, sad because he was not only going to be losing that friend he was also going to be losing his band, so the playback of all the historical clips is appropriate for this song. Brian's marriage was falling apart as well and he was very upset and depressed over that, too. Brian didn't know what the future held for him but he knew that beneath all of it, he was a musician and he needed to keep music alive because it was his only constant. Freddie had told Brian to continue, that he would always want him to do that. Thank you for your reaction. At this time, they band had decided that everyone in the band would be credited on all songs but Brian May wrote this one.
I can't recall if this came out just before he died, or just after (I'm pretty sure it was before, though). But he was clearly deathly ill with AIDS, and hearing this song the first time, I cried like a baby. And I've never been able to listen to it without still crying. I knew right away he was saying goodbye.
those are freddy´s vocals, this was the last song he recorded before his dead, brian Said recently in a interview the part ¨I have to find the will to carry on¨ was freedy last record
This might be Queens best song given the circumstances behind this song and the whole album. There will never be anyone else like Freddie. He is the best performer ever. No question. The lyrics were written by guitarist Brian May about about Freddie. I believe it was Brian's way of dealing with the situation and the uncertain future of the band.
Lump in my throat every time I hear this song. Not only for Freddie but for everyone we lost to AIDS and the way the queer community suffered in the 80s and 90s. The loneliness of going through it in the closet and facing the judgment of the public. Heartbreaking.
When he recorded this song he did it all at once. He was on his last legs and had asked the other members to bring all the songs they had for him to do the vocals. They already knew that the end was near. For this song Brian May offered to sing the altos and Freddie asked them all to leave, to bring him whiskey and ge increirabó the whole song in one take....absolutamente incredible. The heartbreak you can feel in his voice, it gives you chills. Great reaction, great song...greetings from Argentina.
