Dear Polo, I was recommended a channel called Polo reacts today. The channel is posting your old reactions, but I don't think it is you. Am I right or wrong?
I am here because Mark Knopfler is here. And still thrilled that this man and his music is being heard and appreciated. These guys are only about the music. It is perfection.
There are few songs ever written that make you want to break your heart over and over by listening to it. This is one of them. Mark's gift is humanizing emotion.
I was in Hamburg in 2010 at a Mark Knopfler concert on his "Get Lucky" tour. I was 40 years old at the time and when I saw so many visitors who were much older than me, I thought for the first time that I was getting old😅. But I didn't regret it and enjoyed experiencing a live concert with Mark and his great band. I was able to buy the first half recording of the concert on a stick with the logo on it and download the rest of the concert online a day later. The stick is in my display case with the memorabilia that mean a lot to me in my life. Greetings from Northern Germany 🇩🇪❤️
One of the best memories I have of this song was a few years back we had the opportunity to visit Stratford Upon Avon and arrived for the celebration of Shakespeare's 500th birthday. Upon leaving the bus, a local townsperson met us and offered everyone a slice of birthday cake as we toured the village. There was a guy dressed in a jester's costumer wandering the square with an acoustic guitar. This was the song he was playing.
Mark Knopfler also wrote the soundtrack to my favorite movie, "Local Hero." I understand that the final song of the movie ("Going Home") is also how he ends all of his concerts. I give both of them a thumbs up and highly recommend watching/listening to both soon. Thanks, Polo...and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
The guitar is called a "National" Style-O (National Reso-Phonic Guitars is the brand) or you can also call it a "resonator guitar". His one was made in the 30s I think it was. There are different styles but his iconic model here has a full body made of chromed metal. Hence the very special tone. Its super heavy to carry.
This is about his ex girlfriend Holly. She used him to reach some success then dumped him. I love this song. He refers to "the movie song" from West Side Story called There's a Place for Us.
He may also be referring to A Time For Us (also known as the love theme from Romeo and Juliet) from the 1968 Franco Zeffirelli film. It was just that the time was wrong …
Correct, Holly Beth Vincent who had a band called Holly & the Italians and a song that peaked in the bottom half of the Billboard Hot 100 called Tell that Girl to Shut Up. She has admitted to using MK in interviews
While this is from a Knopfler concert, its actually a Dire Straits song, of course written by Knopfler. The original studio cut from D.S. is worth a listen.
Oh man. My roommate introduced this song to me in college in the 80s! It always makes me cry. Made me cry just now. Thank you You said it perfectly, it’s a perfect expression of what love feels like
This song moves me more than any other song in this world. I requested it awhile ago- don't know if this is my request but as long as you got to hear it and share it----------- that makes me happy. It's a National Guitar. 10 out of 10 for me.
This song comes from their Making Movies album, which is personally my favorite. It also contains my fave Dire Straits song called Skateaway which I highly recommend. Brilliant.
Romeo and Juliet was originally recorded with Dire Straits. But Dire Straits was basically Mark Knopfler. His solo stuff is great, as are his soundtracks (Local Hero is fantastic). Knopfler is the king of dynamics. Like Telegraph Road starts so so quiet and then it builds and builds.
My favorite band of all time and Mark is the greatest guitarist of all time. Saw them live at the Fox Theater in Atlanta and it was a great show. Their album Alchemy is perfection. Telegraph Road is a good one to listen to and react.
That song is so damned good. It gets more poignant the older he gets too. He can casually rip off guitar playing that would make someone else sweat and the mood of the song is note perfect.
Short Story: I live in Toronto Canada and saw them the ist of 5 nights they played on the "Brothers In Arms" Tour . They played 5 nights to fine tune their world tour and it was in a small ice rink and they were phenomenal. As a bonus they had Stevie Ray Vaughn open for them and he was on fire. One of the best shows I have ever seen.
This was taken from a 'Night in London' when Mark played just about every one of his most memorable hits at the time with various other great artists. The music and guests were amazing.
Hey love your channel and reaction. I think you'll really love Private Investigations from DIRE STRAITS- Live "On The Night"1993. It's so haunting with Mark playing Spanish style while narrating a spine chilling story with a jaw dropping instrumental ending. It's one of my favorite performances. Cheers, all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
Absolutely wonderful, the song, the lyrics and Mark's voice and guitar, it brings tears to your eyes. Dire Straits were absolutely amazing. Watch Live Wembley 85 “Tunnel of Love” and more, so so great
This was my intro to Dire Straits, first heard performed live on the TV show Fridays, ABC's answer to Saturday Night Live. I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. I have always been enamored of the sound of the steel-body resonator guitar, which is usually played with a slide, but to me sounds like a cross between a guitar and a banjo. Knopfler is an absolute genius in whatever he's done.
I've seen him in concert twice and he's such a gentle, humble human and one of the greatest guitarists and writers on the planet. And yes, they're all dressed like the guy that came to your house to fix the plumbing and I love that!
🥲I love Mark Knopfler... from the beginning, and now 40 plus years later. I'll always tune in for a Knopfler and / or Dire Straits reaction. I see someone in the comments has already filled you in on the Resonator guitar info. Since you mentioned that you wanted to hear another of Mark's signature soaring solos, may I suggest a few songs that you've not yet reacted to here: "Once Upon a Time in the West" from Alchemy Live, as well as "calling Elvis" (Mark's playing will knock you socks off) and their live performance of "Brothers in Arms" (I know you watched the official video, but you are missing out it you don't see this live version... Mark's emotional solo still gives me chills), both from LIVE - On The Night. Happy Winter Solstice!
Please, please listen to the studio version, too. The production values on the whole album are fantastic. He also made a solo album called Local Hero, which is pure gold.
It is called a dobro guitar. "This resonator guitar was made by Dobro in Los Angeles, California around 1933-1937. The name originated in 1928 when the Dopyera brothers formed the Dobro Manufacturing Company. "Dobro" is both a contraction of "Dopyera brothers" I love the sound of it. Some people play it like a traditional guitar while others turn it upwards and either sit or stand while using a slide rod.
I knew when you first listened to Brothers in Arms you would be hooked. Got that Eagles vibe. Now here's a good one for you to watch...Jeff Healy 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' live on David Letterman show. Do a bit of digging around in Jeff Healy's world you will become addicted guaranteed. ✌
This and Tunnel Of Love are two of the best tracks off the Making Movies album. Tunnel Of Love is more of a rocker where this is more ballad so you get a balance between the two. Roller Girl is a good fun song as well from the album. Mark is a fantastic guitarist and one of the few the finger plays a lot of the time so he has a distinctive sound. Dire Straits was so different from other music when they first appeared in the late 70's and I've been a fan ever since.
The guitar is a resonator or resophonic guitar, also commonly known as a Dobro due to the original manufacturer. It is louder and has greater sustain than a normal acoustic guitar. They were normally used in country, bluegrass and folk music and often played with a slide.
Polo, I love your videos. They’re so insightful and your voice is so soothing. With this video, though, I learned something. I was telling my husband about this video, and found out this is one of his most favorite songs. We’ve been married for 16yrs, and I had no idea. Blew my mind. I’d never actually heard this song before, and I’m a Gen Xer, so I’ve usually heard the songs you do in your videos. Thought I’d share.
So here's Mark's lyrical genius on full display - "There's a place for us, you know the movie song" - There's a famous musical film called "West side story" which is basically a modern adaptation of the Romeo and Juliet storyline. And one of the most famous songs from that film is called "Somewhere", and the main line in the chorus goes - "There's a place for us"..... (You know the movie song...). Genius.
I love Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler. You should try a session video between Knopfler and Chet Atkins. Two of the best guitarist to grace the music world.
I see some say he's an " under rated" guitarist. I don't know of any musician or casual listener who thinks such. When you have the likes of Chet Atkins praising you, that's all one needs.
Great track. Another track to try is 'Going Home' which is an instrumental track from the film 'Local Hero', well worth a watch. They did the whole soundtrack. 😂
But live, you get to see the quiet interactions and signals between band members, the subtle guitar switch, the sadness that permeates the song in Mark's face and demeanor. The studio version might have more clarity or other differences (I haven't listened to it yet) but I'll take a well-filmed live version over studio any time. Or...both.

Saw Mark live and it was beautiful…. I was with an ex and I think about him every time I hear Mark 😢
The guitar is a National Steel Guitar. They have resonators inside that give it a very distinctive sound.
Mark's touch on the guitar is unique and for what it is, unmatched.
You can FEEL his heartbreak 💔😭
I agree. Awesome Band.
Excellent selection, the intimacy the freedom to sing the song as only he can.
I can’t listen to this to often..he breaks my heart.
Stunningly.

They have single cones/dual cones an tri cones resonator guitars, used to be played in delta blues music
It's a " National Steel" isn't it?

I've heard this many times but only just got the meaning in the live performance, Thanks for that explanation too

I cry too ...because music is GOD...and I'm simply humbled for having heard it.

Mark knopfler is a poet. I never thought "you and me, babe. How about it" would bring me to my knees but it does
Really beautiful song.
What a beautiful song; I have never heard it before;,transported me 😊. Great reaction, Polo!
I have the urge to say that ain't workin! That's the way you do it! 😂
Thanks to my dad for introducing me to this genius musician and many others from an early age :)
What a gift
Love this song❤ Thanks Polo 😅 Okay it brought tears😢 but that's ok😊 God Bless 🙏✌️🥰 Rock on my Friend ❤
Probably one of the best songs ever about a young love lost... Always brings tears to my eyes.
Ohhhhhhhh, I LOVEMark! I just bought one of his cd’s…….soooooo beautiful!
HO HO!! How beautiful for you!!!this song. Don’t get me started. Oh, it hurts, it’s so beautiful.
Peace and love to you and go all this season!’😇
Listen to the studio version, friend. 🔥👍❤️

I remember sitting in my bedroom when I was a teen playing this over and over again, whilst learning to paint in oils - random I know :)
Check out Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris singing a duet of If This Is Goodbye live in concert. All the feels!
That entire album is one of my all-time favorites.
Mark is unbelievable, always loved him with or with out Dire Straits.i also love the song "Lady Writer"
Dire Straights were huge back in the day. Mark is highly regarded by those of us older to know. Brilliant stuff.
This is my all time favorite Dire Straits song! Great choice.
This was taken from a 'Night in London' when Mark played just about every one of his most memorable hits at the time with various other great artists. The music and guests were amazing.
Great song-writing.
"... So now, all I do is kiss you, through the bars of a rhyme...."
Beautiful. Timeless. Classic. 💜🙏
One of my favourite lines. 🤘
Pure music. Live.
Such talent, beautiful music theirs no other like him.
Yay, you brought back the mesmerizing art thingy!
I want that! It is mesmerizing and I want to know where to get one!
I love that thing 😂
Check out his solo work. Many beautiful songs!
Whether it’s Mark with Dire Straits or Mark with other musicians, it’s always Mark at the forefront!
One of my favorite Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits songs. Thanks, Polo.
I love this song sooo much!
This was a great concert. Another favourite of mine is Wembley live 85 - especially Tunnel of Love and Sultans of Swing.
Beautiful.
Mark Knopfler is one of the finest guitarists to ever pick up the instrument. A truly exceptional artist. ❤
Knopfler’s solo catalog is worth digging into as well, not just a spectacular guitarist but one of the best storytellers of our time, hands down.
I love the feeling you have as much as the music you play 🎶✌️😌
In my youth, i always go to concert, no matter who is the band or the singer, as long they have live instruments in it😊
Mark is a treasure and a legend

When that Guitar was put on the Record Cover, the makers put the price up 20 times higher.

That voice 💓

My absolute favorite Dire Straits song. Thank you for the wonderful reaction Polo!
I see some say he's an " under rated" guitarist. I don't know of any musician or casual listener who thinks such. When you have the likes of Chet Atkins praising you, that's all one needs.

"Wild Theme" live, from the movie "Local Hero" one of his, I think 6, movies for which Mark composed the music.
I would absolutely love to take you to a concert if you lived in my area such a shame you didn't experience that yet😢❤
I love when you do Dire Straits! This is such an intimate version of the song.
Mark Knopfler is the real thing.
YES!
Ive been waiting for someone to react to this song! It's on their 'Making Movies' Album
(The Whole LP is great)
Some people call it a Dobro. Some call it a resonator.
I love watching you grow. It's not just musical taste. It's maturity. A broadening
I love this song
Never knew the name of the band...familiar with the song though as a child of the 70's and listening to FM radio.
amazing talent loved it

Sailing to Philadelphia is a great Mark Knopfler track!

I recommend watching the video of Mark Knopfler talking about his guitars. It's really interesting and enjoyable even if you aren't a guitar player.
I’m once again begging reactors to use the studio version!
