I hear this song and I have an instant memory. I was 16 years old working my first job and they had this playing over the Muzak. I had my whole life in front of me. I wish I could go back to that time. Merry Christmas everyone.
I was fortunate enough to see George Michael at Wembley arena in the early 90s when Elton John appeared to play Don't let the Sun Go Down on Me with him. Fantastic performer who left us too soon. nice to see your reaction.
His music never was my jam but that's a legend right there. If I recall it correctly, after Freddie passed away Queen was seriously considering to continue their run with George filling his shoes and that's the highest praise one can get. Ultimately it never came to be but George Michael gave absolutely iconic performance of Somebody to Love during Freddie's tribute concert at Wembley. An icon.
I'm so glad that never happened. Both Freddie and George had spectacular voices, but I don't think George's singing style would have fit with the band.
George Michael is a beast and my fave male singer. Fun fact, he wrote this song and also created all the music (synths, beat etc). He has a ton of great live performances, but two of my faves are the Freddie Mercury Tribute with Queen singing Somebody To Love (both the rehearsal & actual performance are outstanding), and from his Wham! years his duet with Stevie Wonder singing Love's In Need of Love Today at The Apollo. Thanks for covering this!
Imagine Elizabeth getting 100 percent of George’s singing power. He is only at about 40 percent in this soft reserved song. He could belt it out with the greatest of them.
9:38 Elizabeth: "And is THIS George Michael?" Me: *nodding emphatically, screaming YES in my mind so that I might communicate through space and time* Merry Christmas to our favorite redhead! Ho, ho, ho
What a beautiful bright spot for the day! Thank you for going through this. George's tone was something else. Effortless, clear, intentional. Miss him.
George Michael worth the rabbit hole, his soulful voice, underrated artistry ….his Freddie Mercury salute Queen’s “Somebody to Love”, his Symphonic concert, duets with Mary J Blige. Elton John, Aretha Franklin. Great albums: Faith, Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1, Older, Patience…full of great songs and performances!
George Michael was such an amazing singer. I could never get into Wham, being teeny bopper music. However, I did start appreciating George once he went solo! Songs like "Freedom '90", "Too Funky" and "Faith" were some of my favourites. I would definitely love to hear you analyse more George Michael.
There are so many George Michael songs to love and appreciate, but Mother's Pride shows off his vocal mastery. It is a tragic and lovely song. I would greatly appreciate your analysis and introspection on this song.
Yes! George had sooooo many hits. "Freedom '90" and "Careless Whisper" are two of my favorites that I hope you react to in the future! The man can sing, and he just got better with age.
The great thing about G Michael is that he knew exactly what to do with his voice to convey the emotion he wanted to evoke from the listener. Incidentally, there is a duet with Pavarotti (not my fav). But his best live performances are Somebody to Love, the Long and Winding road, Brother Can you Spare a Dime, and One More Try (Concert of hope)
The Christmas song of my teenage years full of heartbreak, yearning and learning. George's voice is so full of range, tones and feeling you can't help but be pulled into his songs and wallow there happily. Merry Christmas one and all, may the coming year bring joy, peace and a bucket load of amazing songs.
George WAS responsible for rhythm/wanted his voice to be the main instrument, even though he played all the instrumentation. When you’re 21, a perfectionist, and are convinced you’ve solely written, arranged, and produced a UK Christmas number one, there will be a smile behind the sound, as well, right? Now, George may be smiling ~ 39 and 40 years to receive that accolade. Such a LEGEND! Your review was exquisite! So enjoyable to watch a new George fan listening. 🩵❄️🩵 (And, yes he’s the main character. His band mate is the new boyfriend in the vid.)
There’s a new Netflix special called last Christmas and it’s a whole show about this song how he wrote it. It shows the producers in the studio with the layered vocals. You get to hear his vocals from that track in the studio. It’s amazing. You should watch it.
YES!! I watched it a couple nights ago-so good! There’s a part where they play the isolated vocals and it just blew me away. I had heard that GM was disappointed that Last Christmas wasn’t the #1 Xmas song that year (because of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”) but to learn that he donated his royalties from LC to that same Ethiopian Famine Charity, it goes to show that this man is/was truly an amazing human being. Love you and miss you, Yog 😢 Your music lives on ❤
Really nice Netflix doc on the 40th Anniversary of this song and them making the video that we watched over the Christmas holiday that is worth a watch. They explain the relationship of the members of Wham and the other friends that you see in the video and them all getting together 40 years later at the same lodge in Switzerland to reminisce about the times and of course their good friend George. Talks about how George had hoped this would be a big #1 Christmas hit, but then he was asked to participate in the "Do they know it's Christmas" charity song that kept the Wham song from getting to #1, it was #2 behind it for 4-5 weeks. George donated his royalties from the Wham song to the charity as well. Amazingly talented and good person, RIP George.
I’m very glad to have you do a deep dive into this. Sadly, I wasn’t as much a fan when he first hit the charts, but tastes change and I appreciate his vocal talents now more than ever. While not a Christmas song, another Wham, fun, peppy and happy song is Wake Me Up Before you Go-Go, and while I’m sure there are live versions, you need to see the official video version of that. So. Much. Fun! I don’t comment much on channels I follow, but really felt the need to say thanks for this reaction as well as all your others.
As a teen girl in the 80's, George Michael...sigh. 😍 Both talent and looks made him irresistible to a lot of us. His was my first concert and did not disappoint.
I'm a rock/metal guy but I've always liked George Michael. He had a spectacular voice and I also get nostalgic hearing some of his songs. Every few months or so I go on a mini GM binge.
George was a powerhouse. I'd put him in the top 5 vocalists of our time. Definitely listen to more of his work and you'll see. His live duet with Elton John is a must on Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me. Maybe not the insane range of Freddie Mercury, but only George could cover him brilliantly on the Queen/Freddie tribute concert.

I miss George Michael. I was both shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. So influential in the music industry. Part of my childhood and adolescence; he was always a voice that gave me comfort and happiness. My favorite George Michael album is Listen Without Prejudice. It marked a departure from the pop and giddiness of Wham! and the free spirited innuendos of Faith to a more adult and melancholy tone. Truly a masterpiece album. Years later George would release Older, another beautiful album cementing his role as one of the greatest voices in music history. 🎄

You definitely need to listen to it and analyze it. Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!
I have just had goose bumps down both arms as i sing along. I had such a crushing and soul bumping heart and love wreck when this song reached number 2 in the charts here in England back in the early 80's. I was 17 and thought life was over. I still struggle with this song and i am now nigh on 58. I usually stay away from it but just gave into it and sang into it heartily. Them forlorn and devastating feelings still come back but only act as the air that my now fond memory floats on. Yet, those physical goose bumps spread up my arms again. Something in my inner core still remembers. No idea why i just told this to RUclips but anyway.
George Michael is an incredibly versatile vocalist. I couldn't help but like some of Wham's music back in the 80's thanks to my sister being a particularly fanatical GM fan, but it wasn't until the later years when he started moving more into jazzy and slower song styles that George (now a soloist) really started flexing his vocal abilities and I became a huge fan. George liberated himself from (amongst other things) the ongoing pressure of record labels and their uncompromising need to release new formulaic music on a tight schedule, George was now making music he felt more connected to and the result of this directional shift would in draw in a new larger audience mesmerized by his ability to evoke emotional responses singing songs the "George Michael" way, and the song that won me over was a cover of Bonnie Raitts "I can't make you Love me" his vocal textures and ad libs still make me misty eyed even to this day. Keep up the wonderful work Elizabeth, George Michael is a rabbit hole you will want to fall down. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from New Zealand.

Definitely do some more George Michael on this channel. He had an amazing voice.
Also, today is the 8th anniversary of his passing.
RIP George, sing with the angels, as Brian May said.
I hear this song and I have an instant memory. I was 16 years old working my first job and they had this playing over the Muzak. I had my whole life in front of me. I wish I could go back to that time. Merry Christmas everyone.
George Michael is one of the best voices I’ve ever heard live. He was just incredible. Even the songs I didn’t know went right through my body.
wrote it, sang it. programmed and played all of the music, produced it.
the man was truly a generational pop musician.
I was fortunate enough to see George Michael at Wembley arena in the early 90s when Elton John appeared to play Don't let the Sun Go Down on Me with him. Fantastic performer who left us too soon. nice to see your reaction.
You have opened Pandora’s Box. George Michael was incredible. Have fun on this journey.
His tribute to Freddie Mercury with Somebody to Love....
He belts in the background, trust me.
9:38 Elizabeth: "And is THIS George Michael?"
Me: *nodding emphatically, screaming YES in my mind so that I might communicate through space and time*
Merry Christmas to our favorite redhead! Ho, ho, ho
George was so great, I think he is one of pop music's greatest vocalists ever.
One of the best singers we have ever listened to. So sad when he died. One of the greats.
More Wham! More George Michael, please. One of the best voices ever heard!
What a beautiful bright spot for the day! Thank you for going through this. George's tone was something else. Effortless, clear, intentional. Miss him.
George Michael - One More Try. You really get to hear his range and power in that track.
Always loved Michael's voice. R.I.P., George. 😪
George Micheal is the handsome one with the fly blondish 80s hair😉You know, "Father Figure" "Faith" "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go"❤
There are so many George Michael songs to love and appreciate, but Mother's Pride shows off his vocal mastery. It is a tragic and lovely song. I would greatly appreciate your analysis and introspection on this song.
This! Exactly this one. Or anything at all from that album. 🎉
Yes! George had sooooo many hits. "Freedom '90" and "Careless Whisper" are two of my favorites that I hope you react to in the future! The man can sing, and he just got better with age.
The next George Michael song you should do should absolutely be his live performances of "Praying For Time", just him and the piano. Truly beautiful.
The flip side to this was Everything She Wants. Another amazing song.
I have the Everything She Wants 7" that was released on its own. Loved that song.
That song rocks. George really killed it on the production of that song too. Hard to believe he made that basically all by himself
My 9 year old self was obsessed with this song when it came out, and I just loved George. Still do.
George Michael's voice is amazing!
(And, yes he’s the main character. His band mate is the new boyfriend in the vid.)
“Faith”, “Freedom”, and “Father Figure” are musts for George Michael. “Wake Me Up (Before You Go-Go)” for a guilty pleasure Wham.
Love you and miss you, Yog 😢 Your music lives on ❤
Highly recommend "Everything She Wants." It's an underrated song, in my opinion
His voice was awesome. Can't wait to see more George Michael reactions!
“I don’t know who is who on the screen”…
This cracked me up 😂
Id love for you to do more George Michael. I was a teenager in the 80s, have loved his voice since.
Seconded!
I think so to, George was really great. 🎵🎶
JITTERBUG!
„Different corner“ and „Kissing a fool“ would be so great to look at. I really love these two. He was such a great singer!
Oh Elizabeth… you’re going to LOVE exploring this man’s voice. I can’t wait to see more.
So much more than Last Christmas. RIP George. You are missed!
This man is a Legend. And the man could sing!!! They won't go when I go out One more try these two songs give you his depth and range. R.I.P. George 12/25/2016
"Praying for time" is yet another gift from George
You HAVE to do more of George Micheal! He is one of my favorite singers. I loooooooove his voice!
George had a generational voice. he could have sung any genre he wanted and killed it.
George's cover of Queen's Somebody To Love is incredible!!
I'm a rock blues fan, but I couldn't help falling in love with this pop song.....best Christmas song of the last 50 years.....allegedly even more important.
RIP to this legend
Father Figure and One More Try, please.
I know it'll probably be him doing Queen or Elton, but I just have a huge soft spot for young George starting to find his way, and unlike Careless Whisper, there's actually a chance Elizabeth hasn't heard these songs yet.
Please do more George!!! Just unbelievably talented. His live performance with Queen of somebody to love is outstanding. Has the crowd in the palm of his hand. Anything off listen without prejudice is phenomenal
I will be waiting on this one until Christmas or I got to Whamhalla.
I love how she enjoys some songs. She smiles, her eyes glow and makes the video so enjoyable.
1987 record "Faith" is nothing but bangers. Not one song you will want to skip. Amazing voice, amazing time. Father Figure will always be one of my favorite.
Edit Avoid time-shares lol
18:49 that squeal lols! YOLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the loveliest voices.
RIP George, a generational talent. Saw the Faith tour in 1987
This song is an evergreen already. I loved Wham and also George Michael when he went solo. ❤❤❤
FINALLY!! Elizabeth does GM. I've been waiting along time for this. Agree with everyone else, GM at the Mercury tribute... Both rehearsal and onstage are amazing. Elizabeth, It'll put to shame this song.!! Plus the live Duet with Elton. 🤯. And any of his songs from Listen Without Prejudice❤.
Now, if only she finally reacts to KD Lang. It will fill another spot on the bingo card. Especially any of her live stuff( Hallelujah, 3 cigarettes, Crying) . Cant wait ❤❤❤❤😊
Elizabeth, this is why I love watching your reactions. The George Michael Arrested Development reference was freaking hilarious. I grew up listening to the original George Michael and later became a big fan of Arrested Development so I totally understood the reference of George Michael on the show. You definitely have to dig in more of wham and George Michael’s songs. Careless Whisper is an all-time classic that I’m sure you’ve heard at least a snippet of it. You definitely need to listen to it and analyze it. Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!
R.I.P. George ,a tortured genius.
This video is so fabulously 80's it gives me full body goosebumps ❤
