The Detroit River serves as a vital shipping route connecting Lake Erie and Lake Huron within the Great Lakes system. It's a significant route for freighters, cargo ships, and other vessels transporting goods between the United States and Canada. The river flows for about 32 miles (51 kilometers) and serves as part of the international border between the Michigan , United States and Ontario, Canada.
Key ports and terminals are located along the Detroit River, including Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario. These ports handle various commodities, including bulk materials like coal, iron ore, limestone, and grain, as well as containerized cargo and other goods.
To ensure safe navigation along the Detroit River, authorities maintain navigational aids, such as buoys and markers, and enforce regulations to manage vessel traffic effectively. Additionally, the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards play crucial roles in providing maritime safety and security along the route.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge has been designed for the height of freighter traffic on the Detroit River. The bridge, connecting Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and Detroit, Michigan, USA, has a height of approximately 215 feet (65.5 meters) above the Detroit River. Unlike traditional bridge designs with piers extending into the water, the bridge employs a unique cable-stayed design. In this design, the main span is supported by cables attached to towers located on either side of the river, rather than relying on piers in the water. This allows for unobstructed navigation beneath the bridge, reducing the risk of interference with maritime traffic and improving the safety of navigation on the Detroit River.
This careful planning and coordination between bridge design and maritime traffic, help to enhance safety for all users of the river and bridge.

That shot of the barge in the shadow of the bridge and then emerging---you are an artiste!!
You're very kind Sue! Thank you so much for watching the video!
Wonderful! Just FYI, that looks like the Alpena anchored by the concrete pile, the oldest steamer on the Great Lakes, built in 1942 and still going strong 💪. A true piece of history!
Yes, the Alpena goes to Holcim Detroit a lot! I went inside that silo one day and asked the security if I could park in their parking lot to look at the bridge. They were nice and let me park there.
Thanks! I hope you can put all your videos on dvd for sale. Good job.
Thank you so much for the super thanks David!
The DVD idea would be cool.
VERY VERY NICE! That cement facility seems to get quite a lot of traffic. I'm sure that it's not just for the bridge but material gets shipped out by rail. Keep them coming love every video.
Thank you very much Kurt! I see a lot of trucks in and out of that cement facility and they haven't even started paving the bridge spans. Some of it is probably used for the Michigan Interchange.
Perfect ending!
Great Video
Thank you for watching!
If you did this video this past Tuesday, we we're there .......
I was there!
Sweet, not a big fan of tug-barge combos as they're a bit of a kludge and some were created by gutting historic lake freighters (eg St Mary's Conquest), but this was nicely shot. Whilst on the subject of cement though, do we know if there are plans in the final year of construction to paint the bridge towers at all? Or are they intended to stay the current concrete gray.
I do like the freighters more than the tug boat combos too. I don't know about the towers but I'm guessing they won't get painted.
@@michaelanthonyvideos Maybe. I just took a look at some of the 'artist sketches' of the completed bridge on the website and the color looks brighter and more uniform than it currently is. I guess they map slap on a few layers of brilliant white weatherproofing towards the end of construction... we'll see.
👍👍
Thanks for watching Blueman!
30 sec commercial start gets thumb down every time
Hey, it's not my fault. Don't take it out on me dude.
That's pretty petty to do that to a channel. Not cool.
@@michaelanthonyvideos I think the YT algorithm sees both like and dislike feedback as signs of engagement, and slightly increases the content priority as a result. So I wouldn't stress it too much :)
@@dougall1687 That's good to know. Thank you Doug!
