The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is a once-in-a-generation undertaking. Not only will the project deliver much-needed transportation improvements for international travellers, it will also provide jobs and opportunities for growth to the Windsor-Detroit region and includes features that make this project truly distinctive.
The project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (P3). A public-private partnership is a long-term performance- based approach to procuring public infrastructure where the private sector assumes a major share of the risks in terms of financing and construction and ensuring effective performance of the infrastructure, from design and planning, to long-term maintenance.

Great job explaining the construction of the cables and the bridge, D'Andre! I'm an engineer and I lived in Detroit until I was 12. That was over 50 years ago but I still have love for the Motor City. I can't wait to cross the bridge once it is completed.

D’Andre: Excellent explanation of the engineering behind the cable structure of this bridge. I too am a graduate of CASS Tech ‘72. My degree is in Mechanical Engineering from MSU. Walker being such a common name, we may be related. 😊. Proud of you. Keep up the good work

Thats awesome 👍🏿 I always love bridges and towers I should have pursued this career when I was younger. I had a friend That his father had a towered company out of Virginia. And he let me paint the Tower on the ground. It was 980 feet. I always come down and watch the process of the bridge. I know we're on a tough boat so I do see the progress daily. Keep up the good work young man. I'm proud of you.😊

D’Andre, please describe how the stay cables are affixed to the tower. I can’t see from any drone pics or description specifically what the connection is at the tower is it a hook, a coupler…what is it?

  • @robertlevine2152

    DeAndre,
Thank you very much. You should be very proud. I live in Marion, Virginia and I watch every video that comes out. I am 71 and grew up in Pontiac and Southfield. My mother graduated from Cass Tech. Marty Howe, Gordie's oldest son was a year behind me in high school. The world is much smaller than you'd think.
I would like it if you could make a second video of the cables being attached to the tower and the bridge deck. Is it possible to see a drawing of the structure of the tower? In layman's terms, how is the cable attached? And, how is the load transferred down? Are cables coupled through the tower? Or, are they independent? The outer pipes all stop short of the deck connection. Will you be adding pipe around the strands to fill the space? You mentioned the spiral preventing the formation of ice. I've seen similar spiral fins added to smoke stacks and cylindrical towers to prevent harmonic vibrations from the wind. Are there similar concerns with the cable stays?
I bet you weren't expecting all these questions.
Again, thank you very much. You should leave work every day with a smile on your face.
    Robert Levine

This is a very informative video. It was well explained such that folks can clearly understand how the bridge is constructed. I learned so much and I work in road building. The young man explaining was excellent at presenting the inner workings.

D'Andre, that was a great explanation! Well said and broken down nicely. But how are the cable attached into the vertical bridge towers? How much concrete was poured for each tower? Is there a staircase inside or elevator?
