  • The Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, Ontario is an iconic landmark connecting Canada and the United States. This suspension bridge spans the Detroit River and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.
The bridge has been in operation since 1929 and is an important link between the two countries. However, the Gordie Howe Bridge, will, once open, number the days of the Ambassador Bridge. Don't miss the chance to experience this historic bridge and all it has to offer!
    Enjoy, and thanks for watching!

Great video footage. I can’t imagine the ambassador bridge being removed as they have replaced the whole driving surface with concrete, added new beams when the surface was apart, replaced all the guard rails with galvanized, and right now they’re replacing the cables. I would hope it remains open to keep trade and travel moving.

I used to live in Sandwich, Windsor in that small white apartment building at the far right of the screen at 2:50. I worked at Wayne Sate University in Detroit and crossed the border every day. I'd save my paycheques if the Canadian dollar was low and cash them when it went up. That was an interesting time in my life. When I left Windsor I couldn't sleep for a few months, having become so accustom to the constant noise of trucks crossing the bridge. It is a grand old bridge, but the Gordie Howe bridge is magnificent and should improve the commute immensely.

The Ambassador Bridge goes through downtown Windsor with all the stop lights and traffic. The new Gordie Howe Bridge takes the traffic directly to a major highway saving both fuel and money. Don't see why that is a problem. Not sure what is happening on the American side. But Canada is paying for all of it.

Good visuals, but I think you may be confusing the Howe bridge with the replacement of the Ambassador.
The Howe bridge is *not* the replacement of the Ambassador. It is a second, completely separately owned and managed span, at a totally different site than the Ambassador.
The stories you cite about the demolition of the existing Ambassador span refer to the immediately adjacent bridge that the Morouns have been planning for decades. Prior to the approval of the Howe bridge, the Morouns wanted to twin the Ambassador with a six-lane span immedately west of the existing Ambassador, followed by closure and rehabilitation of the existing span to handle one-way traffic. They even built ghost ramps to this planned bridge, which have since been demolished (per court orders from the state of Michigan). Canada did not permit the twinning of the bridge, but did permit the construction of the second bridge on the condition that it *replaces* the existing Ambassador. That bridge is still in the planning stages, but once that bridge is complete, the existing Ambassador must be demolished.
Nothing about the Howe Bridge's construction or opening has anything to do with the Ambassador.

Gordie Howe International Bridge's meant to decongest Ambassador Bridge. Of course, it is less than a century old but it still remains a vital link. Emphasize on "decongest" and also, that's to provide truckers a more efficient path with more modernized border control stations and customs inspection rather than trudging through city streets. So they don't have to just dismantle the bridge, and the increased benefits would be enough to keep that open.

I've had occasion to use the Ambassador Bridge a few times lately, and it's a bit of a shock to realise just what an inhibitor to trade it has become. The bridge itself isn't so bad these days, but the terminal areas, on both sides of the bridge are too small, too cramped and really not up to the demands of the twentieth century. Onward connections at each end have improved over the years, but they're really not up to a good standard. Will the Ambassador Bridge survive? I'm not sure. If you live in Windsor then I'm certain that you'll want it stay, it'd be quite handy to use, especially if all that truck traffic is gone. It could also act as a good standby in case of emergencies. But, being privately owned I really can't see the bridge retaining the amount of traffic it will need to keep up with future maintenance. If governments took it on then the tax payers will be on the hook. There are some tough decisions ahead, I think.

While this presentation is good, it is a bit misleading. The Ambassador bridge will not be demolished due to the construction of the Gordie Howe bridge. This stated demolition condition relates to a formerly proposed third bridge, in all likelihood never to be constructed. There was a proposal to twin the Ambassador and upgrade the existing structure. That proposal received a permit by the US Coast Guard. A conflicting condition by the Canadian government requires the demolition of the existing (old) Ambassador bridge within five years of the opening of that new twin only IF that twin is built (the existing is allowed to stay, or a new structure stays after five years, not both). That US Coast Guard permit for that twin is now expired. As it stands now, there are no serious plans to build that twin and there is no compelling reason. It appears that the new Gordie Howe and the existing Ambassador bridge will compliment each other for decades to come.

The Ambassador Bridge over the years has enabled the Detroit Windsor area to become a real economic powerhouse. in cross border trade and now it'll only get better. The new bridge has a projected lifespan of 125 years. Projected traffic within the first few years is 25000 to 26000 daily trips @ say $10.00 a pop, that's a bonanza. You do the math. Whenever I see an article or news story with a major error, I always wonder what else is wrong. You stated at 32 seconds in, that the bridge “…was privately funded by the Detroit Bridge Company, headed by Matty Moroun”, implying that Matty Maroun was there when it was built. Fat chance, in that he was only two years old when the bridge was completed. It wasn’t until 1978, when the bridge company went public that he was able to buy stocks in the company and then took it private.
This leads to the main point. There is little chance that the bridge will be torn down, due to need and redundancy. The Ambassador Bridge is the largest border crossing by trucks, between the U.S. and Canada, comprising of almost 25% of all goods trucked between the two nations. Currently, the bridge is at near capacity, and the Gordy and Ambassador bridges will fill the need. Secondly - redundancy, if something were to happen to it now, it will be up to two years before the Gordy will be done.
As a final note though, I liked the drone works.

I grew up in Michigan and while this bridge undoubtedly did serve a purpose, I’ve always thought it was pretty ugly. Especially the stupid “Ambassador Bridge” text on the top of each tower. I mean can you imagine the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco actually saying “Golden Gate Bridge” on the towers of that? It would be laughable! But regardless, the design isn’t nearly as iconic with the Ambassador. What’s more, it has always really rubbed me the wrong way that it’s been privately owned and for profit. Public infrastructure like this shouldn’t be in private hands, lining some individual’s pockets. Especially for an international border crossing. The new Gordie Howe looks beautiful, and I for one can’t wait to see the Ambassador go. It feels like part of the long needed revitalization of Detroit. The city has SO much potential. In the early 1900’s it was referred to as the “Paris of the West”. But after decades and decades of decline, to the point of just wiping the slate clean with demolitions and population loss, I’ve been so glad to see the city very slowly begin a second coming.

Truckers will love the Gordie Howe being able to pass Windsor traffic on Huron Church, and hit the hwy from the bridge. The Ambassador, like you say, will be better for Windsor and Detroit's downtown traffic.

As an US citizen that has never been to the area (I been to Toronto several times via the Peace Bridge or Rainbow connecting Buffalo & Ontario)why not just close the Ambassador for a bit after the Howe Bridge opens. Then make the Ambassador Bridge after renovations only for cars/small SUVS. In the NYC area, the Brooklyn Bridge being now 140 years old in the year 2023, only allows cars. Just an idea as maybe local residents in both Michigan and Ontario can reply.

I'd like to know where you got your information that the Ambassador Bridge is going to be dismantled. The current problems have been corrected. Why would they dismantle it? The cities of Windsor and Detroit need a 3rd crossing, thats why the Gordie Howe bridge is being built.

The Ambassador was in such deterioration, if they didn't refurbish it, authorities were afraid it could collapse. Matthew Moroun, Matty Mououn's son, has been completing massive updating to the bridge and continues today. The bridge deck has been replaced and the 100 year old cables are being replaced as well as railings, electrical ect. Still they must inspect the bridge yearly from this point on for deficenties. It will be interesting to see what the Morouns will do to keep as much of the traffic on the Ambassaodr. Interesting comment. Thank you!

There's little reason to believe that truck traffic will increase to any great extent as much of the truck traffic is automotive related and that is likely to shift to Mexico, rather than increase between Canada & the U.S..

Since the Gotdie Hiowe bridge should be able to accommodate the traffic, in particular, commercial truck traffic, there will be no need to twin the Ambassador Bridge, which was the condition to remove it.
The Ambassador bridge isn’t going anywhere. Besides, it would cost way too much money to take it down.

I thought the Canadian governments condition that the Ambassador come down was only made when the owners of the ambassador wanted to create their own replacement. This video covered the story 5 years ago. There was an issue with the coast guard which prevents it from being torn down. Have the conditions changed?

It was a condition of the Canadian Govt. when Gordie Howe was approved. The Canadian people are paying for the new bridge. Taking the Ambassador down would ensure the Gordie Howe financial success as the Ambassador will certainly draw enough traffic to dilute profits for both crossings. That said we in Windsor have seen the Huron Church traffic backed up for miles/klms. I seen idling trucks stretched back up the 401to the Dougal Parkway! We need a second crossing so why would taking the bridge down make any sense except to make the Gordie Howe more successful. Maybe Moroun is planning another bridge in place of the Ambassador. 5 Years would grant them enough time to build the second bridge before pulling the Ambassador down. Just speculation on my part :)

@@bobjonesrealtor7756 Have a look at the CBC story from last year. The Order-in-Council from 2017 gave the Marouns the permission to build a second span immediately adjacent to the Ambassador. Let's call it Ambassador 2. A requirement of the Order was they had to begin construction on Ambassador 2 within 5 years of 2017. That didn't happen, so the Order has expired. The Order required the demolition of Ambassador 1 after Ambassador 2 was completed. But that conflicted with the US Coast Guard permit that required both Ambassadors to remain standing. Since Ambassador 2 isn't going to happen without a new negotiation, I think we can expect Ambassador 1 to stay with us for a long time as the "redundancy" to the Gordie Howe.
