    When I taught woodworking to high school students I made them use hand tools to make their first project.
    I gave them a piece of rough 4/4 mahogany. This was in the late 70’s. I hear from some of those students that they still have that project and they appreciate me making them learn to use hand tools.

    Hey Nathan. My wife works for Agriculture Canada and did an experiment using wood pulp as fertilizer. The results were that the decomposing wood pulp took away Nitrogen from the soil during the first year of application but returned it during the second year. Also, if you do not plant a garden this year, talk to one of the local farmers or farmers co-ops to find out what type of cover crop to plant to plow under next year.

    • @dan1694
      @dan1694 11 месяцев назад

    I am a Tennessean, born & raised. Dad built a house with shiplap siding & painted a dark green. But, his ship lap had a different profile. The lumber was installed horizontally with a curved face along the top edge. This let rain water glide off the surface away from the joint.
    I see where it got the name "ship lap". Your ship lap must be for a different ship.

    Your doors are Lovely, practical and insulated, what’s not to like? Sturdy too! And hand tools are just that, extensions of your hands. You can feel the shavings being cut and the sounds made are like music and each wood has its own sound, smell and personality. And old tools have the energies of those who used and Loved them. Sometimes you can feel the history as you put them to work. The satisfaction that comes by your hands using well crafted tools is something there are no words for. Enjoyable, delightful and rewarding and always used with respect. Kind Thanks Nathan and Many Blessings to all the Elliott Family! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

    When I worked for AT&T (back when it still owned the entire Bell System), they only bought premium tools and equipment for their storerooms and warehouses. Uline was a favorite vendor for portable tables like the one you have. We used them in the Western Electric Warehouse over several shifts 5 to 6 days a week, every day of the year except holidays, for years and years. People would fill orders from those roll around tables. We must have had a dozen of them. I don't think we ever wore one out.
    You asked about the doors. I think they're gorgeous! I'll bet they're really heavy, too.

    Also, if you want to do something other than paint the outside of the doors that will waterproof it and deter the bees, spray it with a mixture of red diesel fuel and automatic transmission fluid (mixed at a ratio of 1 quart of transmission fluid per 1 gallon of diesel. It kinda stinks at first but the smell will go awake in a day or two. Reapply every couple of years. Works like a charm

    Exterior painted wood...unless you do a perfect job with the paint, moisture will want to wick laterally in the joint and since they aren't back primed or painted, can lead to rot. Since the wood is moving there's also a good chance of exposing bare wood. But, that will probably take decades or longer if the drying cycle is longer than the wetting cycle.

    Just a thought but if you're going to be rolling the table around with a load on it, you may want to bolt on a couple of pieces of angle iron or something (you could probably even use a couple of pieces of 1x4 lumber) to reinforce it. It won't add much weight and will make it more sturdy and easier to roll around, especially with a load on it

    Sorry about your Porter Cable nailer. As you discovered, Porter Cable tools have gone the way of Craftsman tools. The Porter Cable name is owned by Stanley/Black & Decker. They cancelled Porter Cable routers (the most well-known routers in the world), because S/B&D management decided to eliminate competition for their other brands. They (S/B&D) own several well known names and are capitalizing on unsuspecting buyers. Try a different brand, but don't rely on past experience. Good luck.

      @@tonygrimes13 hi neighbour , yeah I used to work in a wood shop and they had to pay a company to take away their enormous amount of shavings and wood dust all for landfill . I’ve checked out vids on RUclips on how to create sustainable pellets with a view to a mini business possibly , that’s why I wanted to know if he’d thought about it cis I have . But thanks for letting me know it’s an old question for Nathan

    Nathen you can use your drain oil from your truck engine to stain and preserve the door and the carpenter Bees dont like it . take a small pc of that wood you used and put two coats heavily applied and soaked in to see if you like it

    I'm sure the door will look awesome. To save time, why can't you leave one edge of the shiplap alone so you could just butt it up to the door edge and save time cutting and milling?
    Keep the videos coming Nate.
