Nathan, have a suggestion for you , outback where you are blowing your wood chips you might want to consider pouring an 8’x 8’concrete pad and build a bin on it for all of your sawdust and wood chips with a roof over the top of it to keep the rain and Snow off of it , With two 4 foot double door that you can swing open so you can get the tractor or skid loader into the bin and scoop up the contents

The metal roof looks great, what a wonderful improvement!
I have been moving metal since mid 90s and I've learned that I learn something new everytime I talk to other smiths and read everything I come across. Also I never seem to have enough hammers, punches... well tools of all sorts. Need a tool, make a tool. It just goes on and on. It's been a very rewarding hobby for me.

As an HVAC tech, I know exactly how that kiln works. It is essentially a heat pump. It passes the moist hot air being exhausted over the evaporator coil where the liquid refrigerant boils, pulling in heat, This causes any moisture to condense on the cold coil and drain out. Then the refrigerant carrying the heat energy from the evaporator is compressed. The hot gas exiting the compressor is around 260 degrees and passes through the condenser coil where fans blow that heat into into the drying area, which cools the refrigerant back to a liquid again. And round and round we go.

Ive seen a few people use waste wood to heat the wood to dry it out
If it cant be used a lumber or firewood you can always boil water with it or use the heat for something.
The ash after you burn it good to lower your soils ph too. The saw chips off the saws good compost or fill for a garden every part of a tree is useful in one way or another.
It took it 50 75 100 years to grow
We dont have a 100 years for the next one to finnish growing.
But we can be good stuerts of the resources we have.

Company in Canton Ohio that sharpens saw blades, router bits, planer blades etc. Anything that can be sharpened, they sharpen it, and they are the best in the business. I'm a carpenter, and when i buy brand new blades, i don't even open them before having Cammel Saw sharpen them (they are that good at what they do)
I'm fortunate enough to live close to them, so i don't pay shipping, but i know they get blades etc. From all over the world. You will not be disappointed by anything they touch!

A quick tip to rid yourself of ants. Sprinkle a good amount of cinnamon around the area. If you don't have any to hand use salt. Salt kills them and cinnamon just makes them move away. Have you maybe thought about suspending your sawdust tubing from the ceiling? I've seen others doing it and it gives them extra workspace.

Beautiful home and, you are right, that roof looks great! Man, you have so many projects and tasks everyday! Thank goodness you have good gear to help you out. Imagine the days when that gear didn't exist but the tasks still did. Tough tough people getting all of that work done! God Bless Them! Getting that blacksmithing going will be great! I have a friend is a smithy and love the work he does.He does a lot of it for the town events and opens his shop to the public and does demos for them. The old shop he uses was the original smithy shop near the town center. Old New England Building from 1895. It was right next door from my Dad's old grocery, meat counter, hard goods shop and post office. So your mention of a black smith shop, as you can see, brought a lot of old memories to me.

Blacksmithing is a great hobby - I've done it myself and still have the kit but no shop.
    Couple of things to suggest.
Airflow - not sure if you are using gas or coal, but both need good airflow in and exhaust out of the shop.
Sparks shouldn't be a big issue with wood - mostly they don't have the energy to burn something solid - but avoid rags and plastics/foam insulation as they will burn/melt.
Take it slow and keep repeating the things you make - keep it simple and learn the basics first - my apprentice piece was the normal poker and hooks.
I'm sure you'll have some across ABANA, but also worth having a look at the groups in the UK - BABA, BFBA and Blacksmiths Guild - all have some great resources.
Looking forwards to seeing what you put together and start making.

From what I've read about blacksmithing you may want packed stone (crushed, stone dust or small gravel) for at least part of the floor instead of concrete. I've read that if molten metal falls on concrete it can splash, run, and even spall the concrete. May not be an issue if you're not doing any work with molten metal, but you never know.
Looking forward to your metal journey.

Looking forward to following you on your new journey, Nathan. I have always been interested in blacksmithing, ever since I started working for my uncle as a restoration carpenter over 50 years ago. He had a colleague who was a smith, who made beautiful iron hinges, latches and other things for us. As a young teen, I was fascinated by the forge, the hot metal, and the work it took. That blacksmith - Pete was his name - was a tall, thin fellow who you’d never think of as a manual laborer. But he could mold a huge piece of hot iron into a beautiful strap hinge in no time, with hand tools and an anvil. Fascinating. Like I said, can’t wait to watch you do it. 👍🏻
