    I just got done rigging my Jonny boat today. Waiting on warm weather now. I did a 55lb minnkota Max, and molded kydex skid plates along the bow and bottom. The purpose is mainly for river samllmouth...solo fishing. I've had kayaks for years but you need two people for long trips. With this I can get way further up river and float back down. Also the whole set up is cheaper than a new 9.9 kicker for my boat on 10 horse lakes

    Need to try it with the planing tabs. I bet that would help.

    • @siimkivi
      @siimkivi 3 года назад

      I bet what would help is if they consulted anyone that knew anything about outboard motors. That thing is trimmed waaaaayyy too high. Basically a good rule of thumb is that the trim tab(the flat piece of metal just above the propeller) should be as parallel to the bottom of the boat as possible. That way the motor is pushing the boat straight and not pushing the stern down or up. Not trying to be negative, just a quick tip for you guys. And I enjoy both your stuff on RUclips and seriously thinking of gettin myself a kayak aswell.

    kayaks are not designed as planing hulls. their tracking hulls. think of the paws on a puma or cougar. their bigger, flatter for more surface contact. the paws on a cheetah are smaller, less contact, more speed. planing hulls are designed to lift the hull up and reduce water surface contact (drag)
    the solo skiff was designed for the 6hp mercury. will clock 27mph. it's a hybrid surf skiff with planing hull characteristics. (hard chines).
    the danger of over powering kayaks is that with the soft chimes (rounded), the boat will roll.

    These are cool but it seems like a small aluminum jon boat would be a better option at this point. A 10 foot jon either flat bottom or a small V would have more room, more stability and you could have a second person. I just dont understand the market for these... but I guess its there.

    • @AliexFolgueira

      @@AliexFolgueira a 10 foot Tracker jon boat is $150 cheaper than this thing, can hold 2 people and is only slightly heavier. I'd take a jon boat over this anyday. I have a 12 foot fishing kayak...after 3 years of using it I think a jon boat would have been a smarter choice...

  • @TWC6724
    @TWC6724 3 года назад

    So I'm really thinking of getting one of these but with the built in trolling motor. However, the one thing that is making me hesitant is I've heard you really can't paddle with this. If I run out of trolling battery juice, I want to be able to paddle my way back just in case. Is this really true? I wonder what other kayaks may be better for that. I like the price of this though.

    12ft by 40 will be better, also the fuel tank in the front may help it balance the weight better. No room for tackle with a fuel cell

  • @shitloveaduck

    If you put both legs in the kayak, one on each side of the pod, and twist at the waist you will have much better stability. I know as I have a 14 ft square back canoe with an 8 hp Honda. I have a similar seat set up and am a chubby 55 year old dude so it can be done.
    Gotta stay safe. Eh!

    Pointed out elsewhere by me, Aliex, that what the motorized kayak world REALLY needs? It would be a one horsepower outboard weighing less than 20 lbs. that runs off of the little Propane camping canisters. Lehr has one around 2.5 HP (still too much) but it has been reviewed as "unreliable." And, Tohatsu has made a much better propane outboard . . . but it is 5 HP. Way too much power, too much weight for all but a few kayaks. If someone could make a reliable, propane powered, one-half to one HP outboard weighing less than 20 lbs.? It'd compete very well against the current electric motors and trolling motors. Brad
