I don’t think they look alike enough for the Tissot to be considered a knockoff. They may be similar in genre, but I think the Gentleman has a more distinct look and is even nicer than the rolex
That may be true and there are certainly a lot of subtle differences (haha, or maybe not so subtle depending on how much one studies watches). In particular I much prefer the constant hour markers on the Tissot as opposed to the doubled up markers at 3,6, and 9 on the OP. Plus, you get a display caseback on the Tissot! Haha, rather funny since the Rolex has a much better movement so it would make more sense to want to admire it but then again Rolex basically never makes display casebacks. There is a lot to love about Rolex but it is hard to argue against the amazing value of the Tissot! I appreciate your comment!
Rolex is a wonderful watch brand but very hard to get if you are first time buyer I love Tissot they make quality time pieces and they are not afraid to bring new styles every 3 to 5 years I have the Seastar powermatic 80 in blue dial 43 mm case it’s been great very happy with my purchase
Tissot watches are terrific value for money. I have a blue dial Chemins des Tourelles with stainless bracelet that has been a great watch even thought it has synthetic pallet fork and escapement wheel. Some people complain that these are "plastic" parts but they work well and are self lubricating. Mine maintains -1 to -2 seconds per day consistently. Not bad for a $750.00Cdn ($560.00USD). That is more than 10 times less than a Rolex that I would be afraid to wear in most situations. If I bought a high end watch it would probably be an Omega and not a Rolex. The Gentleman with the silicone hair spring does not use synthetic parts however. The fact that the ETA Powermatic 80 is completely built by machines makes them cheaper, more reliable and more consistent and accurate. Watch snobs don't like them but they are fantastic time pieces.
I have two "Gentleman" in my collection (silver and black) and I never would think, they look like an Oyster Perpetual. They have different cases, hands and backs and a date window and butterfly clasp which both are not available with the Oyster. I love them ! Great video with very good informations about the history of Tissot. (I'm no native english speaker. Apologies for my english)
@@jxpstfu2450 at this price point, what’s not to love about a Swiss manufacture simple movement with great power reserve and some resistance to magnetism ?
Absolutely love the quality of the video, the explanation and history of the brand, the subtle music setting the tone for this awesome video. Definitely earned a sub today!
Excellent appreciation video. Tissot is a class act. I do have the silver dial version of this and appreciate it enormously; sure there is a bit of a similarity, but when your name is Tissot, or, for that matter, Longines (they have a similar model), I think you can raise a credible point about diversity and inspiration without getting into knockoff territory. Great watch, great vid; stay safe and good luck with grad school.
Thank you Peter! I am so glad you enjoyed it. Oh no question. Tissot has so much history and quality going for it that I am surprised they are not more well known here in America. Yes, I think I may have been a bit too harsh in my video and can totally get behind what you say about the Gentleman having legitimate inspiration from within Tissots own history. I think the success of the OP line definitely inspired Tissot to bring back its own watches of the same style in the form of the Gentleman but that does not mean it is actually a knock of. Thank you for the input! I always appreciate hearing well thought out comments like yours!
The similarity to Rolex is a non-issue for me as I buy watches for me, not for what others think. Also, for a fraction of the price, you get so much value (as you mentioned) plus a date-just-esque date window. My Tissot Gent (blue variant with crosshairs) arrives tomorrow after much research and soul searching coming to terms with what budget range I’m in. I have a few nice pieces in the slightly higher range, but the 1k +/- is where I can sit comfortably. Anyway, Great review. Very fair. Subbed.👍🏼
Well said. Yes, there is so much value in this watch and one I still get a great deal out of wearing. Good choice on the blue dial variant! That will look so good and serve you well for a very long time
This is a GREAT review with quality commentary by the viewers. I believe Tissot gets overlooked and does not receive the credit it deserves. Nine times out 10, this is the brand that is on my wrist our in my pocket (Tissot Pocket Watch).
Thank you so much! Yes I have been very pleased with the commentary from the viewers. That is all thanks to great watch enthusiasts like yourself! Totally agree. Tissot makes a wonderfully well made watch for the price you pay especially when compared to watches costing significantly more. That is so neat to hear you carry a pocket watch too!
Great video, everything you want in a watch and nothing you don’t. Just got the TG80 with black crosshairs dial on a dark brown leather strap, it wears comfortably, incredibly versatile and always looks proper.
I own the Tissot Gentleman and I love it. Very high quality, beautiful dial, and accurate. The only reason I’d want a Rolex is for these exact traits and if the Gentleman offers the same for much less, why would I spend the extra money? I’m not concerned with resell value or the prestige of owning a Rolex. I simply want a watch that looks and performs great. So in the end, the comparison doesn’t bother me in the least. Loved your review and Tissot history. Looking forward to more videos.
That is solid logic. Glad you are enjoying your gentlemen. Tissot is really knocking it out of the park with models like this! Thanks for the kind words too!
Great Review. While watching the Review, I was also thinking that the watch looks very similar to Rolex watches. Then pleasantly surprised that you confirmed the same feeling at the end. If we are getting similar level of accuracy, then yes Tissot has nailed it. Also the silicium model is antimagnetic. Summing up , Tissot offers the highest quality for the money and makes such watches accessible to masses. This was indeed one of the visions of the founding fathers of the company. Kudos Tissot.
That is correct Gijo! Tissot is an amazing value. Cool to hear you were thinking the same thing about the Gentleman’s resemblance to the Rolex OP. Mine is pretty accurate. Usually plus 1-3 seconds per day.
Excellent video. I have this watch and I love it. I bought it in Black and Blue at the same time and decided I liked the blue better. I kept the blue and sold the black. I’ve seen the white/silver one and think that looks great too. The black and blue were too similar, but that white/silver one looks fantastic. Might be another addition to my collection.
Excellent review, Phil. I do think you're being a little harsh re the similarities to the OP. There are a lot of watches with this "look," and there is only so much differentiation possible. It's a lovely watch and hope you continue to enjoy it as such. Congratulations on starting grad school; it won't be long before you're going upmarket and writing about Audemars, Patek, and Vacheron, lol.
Thank you so much Pete! I really appreciate your kind words and insight. I was just at my local AD checking out some JLC, Patek, and Omega dress watches. It is crazy how similar some of those are (definitely cannot responsibly afford any of those right now, but it is still fun to look). Looking online it seems as though Vacheron and A. Lange also make dress watches that look super similar. Rolex seems to be the most different with a fluted bezel on their Cellini. Considering those are some of the most well respected and oldest brands in the industry, I see your point regarding having only so much latitude to work within for a certain style of watch. In light of this, I would agree with you that I came off a little too harsh on the Tissot Gentleman. It is a great watch that does what it is intended to do very well!
I am really glad i discovered your channel. As a watch collector I really do appreciate the insight here and I love the manner of delivery. Subscribed. Look forward to more content. thank you.
Such a great review!! Keep posting!!! I've been wearing my silver/white gentlemen for couple months now and I love it more and more everyday. I switched the bracelet with a black leather strap and it looks so good. I also watched your Grand Seiko review and love it.
Thank you so much Ricky! Really appreciate those kind words. Shooting to post a new video every couple of weeks so stay tuned! Great to hear you are enjoying your gentleman! Like I said, it is a great watch indeed!
My favourite tissot is the couturier small second hand white, photos do not do the time piece justice. Design, build quality, integrated strap BEAUTIFUL
That does sound nice! I have never seen one in person but I have no doubts it is a great looking watch to see in person. Tissot makes amazing watches but they put up these lame renders on their website that make it hard to really appreciate what the watches look like in real life
I have one and the power reserve is no where near 80 hours. It's honestly closer to 48 hours max. Not sure if I have a bad one or not. I haven't actually timed it, Maybe I'll do that.
I would try and time it to see. One thing to keep in mind is that if you live a relatively sedentary lifestyle/do not move your arm much, the rotor likely will not be able to spin around enough to build up a full wind on the mainspring. Thus, unless you walk around or move your arm a lot, most watches when worn will float somewhere around 50-70% of their max power reserve. If you really want to see the true max power reserve of your watch, give it 30 or so winds of the crown after you take it off for the day to make sure it is fully wound (might not require 30 winds but it never hurts to overwind automatic watches since they have a clutch mechanism to make overwinding impossible. You should be able to feel when this happens) . Tissot generally makes really good watches so I would be surprised if your watch were not able to reach into the upper 70 hours range or even beyond 80 hours. I have tested mine a few times and it is always 80 plus or minus a few hours. However, if I do not wind it after taking it off and have spent a few days working on my computer without moving around very much, then the power reserve is usually around the 50 hour range. Hope this helps! Let me know if you end up testing the PR
Nice review, thanks, Phil. Love your enthusiasm... however I disagree about it being similar to an OP and find it difficult to see how anyone could possibly consider it a 'knock off'.T he handset is nowhere near the same, there are no 'double' indices on the Tissot, it has a date window. Great watch with great specs for a fraction of the cost of a grossly overpiced, horrendously overrated, overhyped, unobtainable R...x (they say a fool and his money are easily or soon parted applies) . The only downside for me is the polished centre links on the bracelet (this IS a bit Rolexesque, unfortunately). Tissot would have been better IMHO to leave the whole bracelet brushed (the brushing is outstanding!). I have just purchased the green dial variant, it's not what you would call a bright 'sunburst' dial-it's a little more understated. I swapped out the bracelet (which was actually not as annoyingly tacky with the polished centrelinks as I initially thought) for a green leather strap......which looks amazing. At least I have two options (as is usual with most bracelets, taking them off can be challenging). Mine is running +1 second/day (16 hours on wrist/8 hours dial up overnight) . I also have a Tissot Ballade Chronometer , two Hamiltons, two Midos and a Certina DS1 with the same base Powermatic 80 movement. ALL are running well within COSC limits.
Thank you Graham! That is true, the Gentleman and the OP are not exactly the same but I do feel that there are enough similarities to make them at least comparable to a mash between the OP and DJ. Probably a smooth bezel DJ on the oyster bracelet would have been a better comparison. Good point on the huge price difference. I do wonder what the margins are on both watches. That said, I would be willing to bet that Rolexes margins are not nearly as high as most people would guess given they make basically every part of their watches in house as opposed to many other brands that outsource a big portion of their components to Asia (mainly China and Malaysia). PCLs are something I am rather undecided on. I generally like how they look but they do make scratches more apparent so that is definitely a downside. Putting the green dial gentleman on a green leather strap sounds like a stellar combination. Very impressive that all your watches are running so well but I suppose that is a testament to the huge improvement that has been made as of late and the great engineering that Swatch is doing. I appreciate your input. Thank you sir!
It was obviously a successful and popular roll-out as they're doing versions with the cross-hatch on the dial and the green colour too. I think they must be phasing out the PR100, its closest predecessor in looks. Although that one has a COSC -chronometer version. I guess if the Gentleman comes with a chronometer option in the future, you know it's going to be a stayer in the Tissot range.
That is a good point John! I had not thought of it as a competitor to the PR100 either. True, certifying the Gentleman as a Chronometer would definitely imply a desire to cement the watch as a mainstay in the Tissot range. Well said John!
My embryonic watch collection consists of a Hamilton Field watch (Day/Date automatic, H70505733) and this Tissot, both of which I genuinely love. I am a humble public schoolteacher and am limiting myself to about $1000 a timepiece, so my grail watch, a brand new Rolex 41mm Oyster Perpetual, is well out of my price range for the foreseeable future. Having said that, I totally agree that when I can afford -- and find -- a Rolex OP, I am definitely getting one and retiring (reselling) my Tissot. But until then, I am thoroughly satisfied with my Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 w/ a blue dial, it's a beautiful thing.
That is a great two watch collection! Oh, yes the blue dial variant is beautiful. Glad you are enjoying it and your Hamilton as well! That will be really exciting when you have worked hard and have saved up to responsibly buy a Rolex. I respect that
It’s funny, I’m looking at the blue one and the Hamilton khaki king. I’m thinking it’s better to have two affordable watches than one that costs several thousand dollars for various reasons.
Ive had mine (silver dial) for a month. I absolutely love it. Don’t share your complaint, though I wouldn’t ever spend 6000 dollars on a watch. The gentleman gives you a luxury feel without emptyimg your pocket.
Amazing video! Loved the insight on Tissot history. Im seriously considering to buy this as my first swiss watch. And yes that was a little too harsh haha
Thank you Mauricio! Very glad you enjoyed it! Yes it is a great watch and you certainly will not be disappointed if you end up getting it. Like I said, I still really enjoy wearing mine. Haha, yes I think you are right. I probably was overly harsh. I should have prefaced what I said a little better clarifying that I, at least to an extent, was playing devils advocate especially since nearly no other reviews even mention the similarities and I just wanted to point them out.
I was torn between getting the Gentleman or the Open Heart Gentleman. I think I've settled on getting the Gentleman (blue dial), the open heart is interesting but a bit too flashy for me.
Quality review! 👍 I just needed a fairly accurate, do-it-all, automatic watch with antimagnetic properties. That's it. For me, the Gentleman ticked all the boxes. Sometimes people just want a reliable watch.
I understand that some watch lovers don't like homage watches. I personally don't mind it at all. Tissot is a great brand and AFFORDABLE. Just remember that most people cannot afford Rolex prices, and even if you can, you can't find one in stores. My personal collection system is made of 5 watches. The everyday watch, the diver, the chrono, the dress, and the flieger. Tissot has some many great affordable watches, that you can make a full collection just with Tissots. So we would have the Gentleman, the Seastar, the Heritage 1948, the Visodate, and the flieger is the only one missing,... But you can fill up that spot with something interesting from their vast catalogue. Great brand!
Paulo, that is well said. I agree, Rolex watches are very very hard to come by from the ADs. Plus, you could afford a whole collection from Tissot for the price of one Rolex. I am quite impressed with what Tissot is able to do for such an affordable price. Like you say, great brand! Thanks for the input - I always enjoy reading well thought out comments from watch enthusiasts like yourself. By the way, it sounds like you have a great 5 watch collection there!
@@TheTimelyFocus Phil, you're right on the money! Rolex right now is a trend for the nouveau riche who need to show off that they've made it. I never follow trends. I like what I like and I can't afford luxury watches. Tissot is very impressive for the money. I'm still building my collection. I'm new to watches. I have the Visodate, and I would love to get that wonderful vintage looking chrono (Heritage 1948). The Gentleman or the PRX are very likely to follow,... Cheers!
I expected e.g. the missing regulator to be a con that you would mention. Sure, it looks similar to the Rolex, but that's just the way "modern-classic" watches look like. The Longines Conquest looks like that, the King Seiko too...
Great video Phil!, Tissot is arguably best “Swiss mechanical Watch” for almost every watch enthusiasts, Yeah we do have Seiko & other micro bands out there , but if someone wants that Swiss&good brand history (value) this is probably the best, and the fact that as you mentioned it does resemble like Rolex OP , or Omega aqua terra, end of the day it’s just a vague comparison (&that’s Ok) but hey most of the moderately priced watches do tend to copy similar designs of higher end watches like Rolex, blancpain, omega,AP, this happens in every industry you know, anyway great watch great insight phil! Stay safe!
Thank you Sid - glad you enjoyed it! Yes that is a great point and a very good thing to remember. I suppose I could very easily think of a lot of watches that are super similar from one brand to another. Like the Rolex Chellini, Omega Tresor, Patek Calatrava and the VC Traditionnelle (all super cool watches) for example. Thank you for the input!
Great review and congrats on your new career at grad school. Don't worry about the OP comparison; 99% of the general population know nothing about Rolex and all the hoopla surrounding it.
They're both basic time and date steel sports watches in the GADA category but that's it. The dials are very different up close, hands, the type of indices, the lume etc. If you hadn't mentioned the OP I wouldn't have entered my mind when I was looking at the Gentleman.
I not only really enjoy the look of the "original" but as well the slight differences in all of the similar designs that I've seen . A crowd pleaser no doubt . Nice one !
It also looks like an Omega aqua tera, and plenty other watches on the market. Look at the Swatch group alone, all the brands have a classic looking design like that. I'd be interesting to compare Tissot gentelmen, a longines conquest, a aqua terra and for the sake of it a oyster perpetual since they all look soo similar, and put up your thoughts if the more expensive watches worth the difference of the value. You can even take a tudor black bay 36/41 In consideration 😎 Looking forward to hear your thoughts. I'm a watch enthusiast but to me the Tissot it's a no brainer, and as I'm getting older I'm struggling to see why we paying top dollar for omega and rolex. Is it worthy? Hhmm.... What do you get for all of that money a part from a NAME?
That is a good point Johnny. The overall design and especially the hour markers are rather similar to the Omega AT. Maybe that is one reason I really liked it. I am hoping to pick up an AT in the near future and I will certainly put together a comparison between those watches. The Rolex OP might be a bit hard to source seeing as those have been in quite high demand for the past few years but I will see what I can do. Great idea! Excellent question. As one eclipses the 3k mark, more and more tech is realized. For example, something that the Rolex OP and Omega AT both have which the others do not, is a screw down crown and nearly completely anti-magnetic movements. These are super nice features for everyday wear pieces. The Tissot Gentleman is a particular good value given it has great looks and 100m water resistance and a silicon balance spring which helps it to have relatively high levels of magnetic resistance. Part of me wonders how much it can actually cost to cut some threads and use anti-magnetic components for the mainspring. However, Omega and Rolex do put a lot of work into research and engineering new movement tech which eventually works its way into cheaper models. There will always be a higher level of craftsmanship, detail, and tight tolerances that is expected on the higher end models as well. The question is how noticeable are these differences and are you willing to pay for them. Thanks for the comment! You bring up some great points and ideas!
Right on - very cool Alex! What did you study? Haha, it would be funny if we had some of the same professors. I am in the Molecular Bio department and am researching TBI at DUs Knobel Institute for Healthy Aging.
I've watched quite a few vids about Tissot and no one has explained their history and innovations as well as you. I have been contemplating buying the Gentleman, recently. Your information might contribute to whether I do or not. PS. The kicker at the end put me off. If someone else thinks its a Rolex, it might get ripped off my wrist. So, I'm out!
I own the blue dial Gentleman and a Rolex OP 41mm. The Powermatic 80's anti-magnetic silicone hair spring helps separate it from other similar watches in this genre of "everyday/every situation" wearability, including the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. Some may scoff at that statement but if you know...you know. Comparing them in quality, the Rolex stands alone in my opinion. But that shouldn't have you counting out the merits of the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 Silicium or the brand as a whole, as they too stand alone.
That is a great point. Yes, Tissot does a really good job and including an antimagnetic hairspring is a very valuable quality on any watch. I do wonder if in fact the Tissot hairsprings are actually paramagnetic like the Rolex Parachrom Bleu hairsprings. Haha, I suppose we could find out by leaving both on strong magnets and seeing if either were affected. Anecdotally, I do work around a lot of strong magnetic fields and neither my Rolex watches nor my Tissots have been affected negatively in any perceptible way. I expect Omega would fair the same but it would be fun to test more seriously
@@jayj2day that is a great idea. No promises, but I might have to track down an Omega and then try and magnetize a bunch of my watches in measurable and controlled ways. Haha, I have already accidentally done it in the lab with my Grand Seiko. Now I pretty much only wear certified dive watches and my Milgauss in the lab
Great video. I considered one of these but instead opted for the Seiko Prospect Alpinist Deep Lake, another fantastic watch at a reasonable price point.
Oh that is a sweet watch too! Those Alpinists had not been released when I picked up my Tissot but if they had been that would have been a much harder decision!
Finishing and dial aside. I honestly prefer the case design of the Gentleman better than the Oyster. The bezzle design of the Oyster makes the watchface feel a bit cramped. On the Gentleman, the watchface looks a bit larger than it is. I don't think anyone would confuse the gentleman for a rolex for that reason alone.
I see your point but, being older and having been raised by a watchmaker father and seeing many of the 60’s and 70’s watches first hand to me it doesn’t so much look like a Rolex oyster perpetual but, just the kind “ run of the mill” 60’s-70’s standard rare Swiss dress/casual watch. The newer Rolex oyster design with the increased size looks different to me than I’m used to more like an really upscale 60’s to 80’s standard fare Swiss watch. So, I think to me just the opposite! Lol
Thom that is some great insight! That must have been so fun to be able to learn from you dad all about watches! I really appreciate your comment and I definitely see your point. Further in yours/Tissots defense, there are so many brands out there that all make very similar watches in the out and out dress category too. I am thinking of watches from JLC, GS, AP, VC etc. that all seem to resemble the Calatrava.
Amazing video!! Watch companies commonly make their own versions of popular looks and can seem very similar. It's a fair argument to bring up. I can see the similarities but don't feel it's a blatant knock off. Just a bit too harsh! Lol Love this watch!!
Yes, well said Hector! Since making this video I have noticed an even closer resemblance of dress watches from popular brands like Patek, VC, JLC, Omega, etc. Thank you for your input and kind words. Appreciate it man!
Do you think this watch is too small for an 8" wrist? What do you think of the Tissot gent XL classic (42mm) and swissmatic (43mm)? I like the dial finish much more on this powermatic, but id love any recommendations on similar watches in bigger dial sizes.
Not at all. The watch will look smaller than on my 6.75” wrists but that will give it a really classic and somewhat vintage look. Try one on though if you can since in the end how you feel about it is what matters most. The Swissmatic looks cool and has short lugs so even though it is on the larger side will still wear really well. However, take a good long look at the Tissot Luxury Powermatic 80. Wow what an incredible value it is at the current grey market prices of under $300. I have bought a few as gifts and rather wish I bought on for myself instead of the Gentleman. Yes the Gentleman has a slightly better movement (more anti-magnetic), water resistance (50m vs 100m), and great applied hour markers, but I am not sure those warrant nearly double the price. If I were you, I would go with the Luxury Powermatic 80 and never look back regarding this category/price range of watches. Hope this helps!
That is a great question. I do wear my Milgauss quite a lot but my Tissots definitely get a lot of wrist time as well. Very hard to beat their value. I have given many as gifts since they are such wonderful watches for the money. Plus, when wearing a Tissot there is the added benefit of not having to worry too much about it in terms of being stolen or anything.
The only downside mentioned of looking like an OP is actually a main plus for me as I came across this Watch looking for a more affordable Rolex look alternative.
Subscribed to your channel very appreciated for the history overview and nice music on the background just got today this beauty piece for myself. I don't agree that this is a replica or copy and do not believe that Tissot did it intentionally I have several Tissot pieces and this one my daily watches for next couple of months for sure
Hey thank you so much! Glad you appreciate it! Congratulations on choosing such a great watch! Yes, maybe I was too harsh on Tissot but to me at least it is hard not to look at my Gentlemen without also seeing a little bit of Rolex inspiration. Either way though, it is still a great watch!
Great review man ,this gentleman is in my wishlist for months now and I would pull the trigger just for the fact that it resembles the OP 😜😜... Loved your video ,however would like to see the watch and it's macros more that I saw....just a suggestion....
Thank you sir! I really appreciate the input. I will keep that in mind for my upcoming videos and be sure to include even more watch shots. I definitely get that. In the gentleman’s defense, I really enjoy the watch. It draws on Tissot’s own history even if it does look a heck of a lot like the OP. Some commenters here have pointed out that there is only so much latitude a brand has when designing a watch in this style. Even the hallowed Patek, VC, and JLC make some watches that looks remarkably like each other (I would say even more than this Gentleman resembles the OP). Just some thoughts
That's a nice watch if it didn't have the Powermatic 80 in it. Buying a Tissot with a beat rate of 21,6 00 beats per hour (imo) defeats the purpose of buying a Swiss watch. The unmolested ETA2824-2 has a beat rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. that makes the second counter sweep so much smoother. I do get why they dropped the beat rate, it was to get a higher power reserve. My other problem with Powermatic 80 movements is the escapement wheel and the pallet fork are made from plastic. using plastic in a movement that cost a fair amount of money seems a bit wrong. I sure can't argue that. It's a very beautiful looking watch though.
As one who love Rolex (reminds me of the beloved Milgauss) I can also never afford one, so this would (and will be) a suitable alternative. Thanks for a great video!
That is a good choice! Yes, I do see the Milgauss similarities - especially with the polished center links and case shape. Both amazing watches in their own ways. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I think it looking like a Rolex at 1/10th the price is a plus. This seems to be an extremely high quality piece at an affordable price point. Rolex it’s not obviously, but for the money, you get a darn good watch, that is an eye catcher. This I will own one day, don’t need a Rolex.
I think I'm just gonna get to the store and buy one today, because it's available instantly, not like Rolex... also, a lot of money saved. Oyster Perpetual used to be twice as less in terms of cost.
In my opinion i would say that tissot is deferent enough from rolex because of its hands,so it doesn't look like a rolex homage. Exactly the way that Tudor does!
That’s a great watch! You will enjoy it but better deals can be had. Retail price from an AD here in the is lower than that and I currently see them for about $700 here. Hope this helps! www.anrdoezrs.net/click-100652553-10694952?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.jomashop.com%2Ftissot-watch-t127-407-11-041-00.html
Yeah, I might have been a little too harsh. Haha, I figured it would be more interesting if I had more of a hard position than a boring one. Haha, a few writers at Hodinkee also compared the Gentleman to the OP so I would like to think I am not crazy. I do however understand they are playing in different markets and offer different levels of quality but there are enough similarities that for me it warrants the comparison
Really enjoyed your Tissot review. I am split too on the rolex similarties too. I'm not a rolex hater , I think some of rolexs are beautifully designed and well made.( Oyster P) I just don't like how rolex manipulates the market. Why would anyone spend 15,000 on a 4,000$ watch!!!
Thank you Bill! Yeah I get that. I have been wanting a Rolex Milgauss Z Blue for quite a while now and am just waiting for the AD to get one in and give me the option to buy it. Pretty amazing how Rolex is able to maintain such demand. They do make a great product though. Is Rolex better than others from the competition like Omega, Grand Seiko, IWC, etc.? Maybe in some ways but luckily they are not pricing them as if they are markedly better. Most of them are right in the ballpark of these aforementioned brands for comparable products. It is only on the secondary market that many Rolex models are hyped and sold for sometimes many multiples of original retail price.
As an early watch collector, I use to be a Tissot guy. Of the many buys, most after 10 years are deeply oxidized, non working, or worth little. In fact, I'd classify as junk. I then pivoted to Seiko. Seiko in my mind is a much higher quality and better looking time machine. My advise to collectors is to steer clear of Tissot and if looking for a field or daily high value business watch, to deeply consider investing in the Seiko Alpinist instead of any Tissot product. Just an opinion.
Interesting insight! I have only have my Tissot for about 5 years now but have some quartz ones over a decade old and though the quartz gets very little use since I prefer automatic, they are still going strong and looking great. Seiko does make some great watches though. I even have my grandpas from the 70s which is still ticking away!
Hi, I am interested in buying this watch, on either blue or green dial. I would appreciate if you could tell me more on where I could find this awesome watch at the price you mentioned, on the grey market. Thanks in advance!
Right on man! Yes it is a great watch. I got mine on JomaShop. Sometimes you have to wait for them to come back in stock but these watches can more often than not be found for around $500 there. Sometimes Authorized Retailers will offer 15-20% off as well. Hope you are able to pick one up!
So many modern watches are too thick and just too big in diameter for my taste. I'm planning on selling my 90s vintage Rolex Air King. Not sure what to get. This is an option, along with Tudor Black Bay 36 and Longines Conquest 39mm.
That is exciting! Yes this is a great and versatile watch - wearing mine right now actually! I too enjoy smaller watches. Personally 40mm generally my limit maybe with the exception of some dive watches that might be in the 41 or even 42mm size. The Tissot Gentleman is fairly thin and in black I feel like it wears a little smaller than your average 40mm watch. Check out the Nomos Orion and Ludwig. Two amazing watches that come in around the $2k mark. They are smaller and lean on the dressy side while the gentleman is more casual. I am guessing that the Rolex you have is a 36mm or maybe even 34mm. The Gentleman is considerably larger so I would take a good long look at these Nomos offerings as well
Tough question. They are both great watches. I actually owned the Ballade for many years and really enjoyed it. It is definitely more of a formal/dress watch than the Gentleman which is more of an everyday watch that is highly versatile. They both have the same movement which is great but the Gentleman does have double the water resistance at 100m as opposed to 50m. Other than that it really just comes down to which you like the looks/style of better and or which you can find the better deal on. I think either would be a great choice!
@@harshalmankar4710 another great question. With consistent maintenance (movement cleaning, lubrication, and seal replacement) every decade or so, I would imagine these watches could easily last 50 years. The movement is based on the ETA 2824 which has already been around for about 50 years and is extremely popular so sourcing parts and watchmakers who can work on it should never be an issue. Might cost up to a couple hundred bucks to have serviced ever decade by Swatch but you could likely also find independent watchmakers who could maintain it for you just as well for less.
Yes it is very similar. That is actually a main reason for which I appreciate my Tissot Luxury Automatic more - it is a unique design that does not in any way feel like it is trying to be something else. Great question. These Tissot movements are based upon the venerable ETA 2824-2 and now the Powermatic 80 movements are some of the most popular in production so support for it will be easy to find for decades to come. I have no doubt that Tissot with one of these movements could last many decades with proper maintenance. Rolex has proven to make some of the most robust watches out there and should easily last generations assuming proper care and maintenance as well. I have met many elderly gentleman who have been wearing the same Rolex for over 50 years and their watches still look great and work perfectly. That always impresses me. I have not seen many vintage Tissots.
Glad you enjoyed the video Nicholas! Thank you! I understand the indecision. Went through the same thing myself. I of course did go ahead with the purchase and am still glad I own it since it is such a great watch especially considering the price point. Another way to look at it is to consider that owning the Tissot will allow you to enjoy a great timepiece while you wait to save up for and work with your local AD to actually get the Rolex OP since it will likely take over a year for them to be able to get one for you (assuming that is something you want). During that time, having the Tissot will allow you to be sure you actually like this style and want to follow through with the Rolex purchase when one becomes available. Overall, I still think the positives (including that Tissot does have some historical legitimacy in saying the Gentleman was inspired by a previous design of theirs) out weight the negatives of this watch but that is a personal decision and if it really bothers you a lot that it is so similar to the Rolex, well I would probably find another watch to look into. Hope this helps and enjoy your horological journey Nicholas!
Haha, right on! Yes I still quite enjoy mine as well! The green one is really cool. Sometimes I wish I bought that one instead. Congratulations on your new purchase. I hope you get decades of enjoyment out of your new watch!
That would have been nice! COSC certification does increase costs a bit so I bet they wanted to be able to deliver as good a watch as possible while still keeping costs relatively low. Mine runs well within COSC tolerances at about 1 second fast per day. Not sure if mine is the rule or exception but most Tissot watches I have or have had experience with also run pretty accurately as well
I don’t think they look alike enough for the Tissot to be considered a knockoff.
@@TheTimelyFocus thank you!
Bought my Tissot Gentleman yesterday. Love this piece so much.
Which color?
@@abdulrahmanassous2873the blue dial is perfect 🤙🏻
I have two "Gentleman" in my collection (silver and black) and I never would think, they look like an Oyster Perpetual. They have different cases, hands and backs and a date window and butterfly clasp which both are not available with the Oyster. I love them !
Great video with very good informations about the history of Tissot.
(I'm no native english speaker. Apologies for my english)
Heritage, Swiss Made, good specs, classic looks, strong value for money. Thank you Tissot.
How bout the movement? LOL

Thank you so much! Great to hear you enjoyed the video!
Tissot is killing it with this series. The new Tiffany Blue is hot right now on the automatic version
I agree! Tissot makes some great stuff!
True
I went to purchase tissot prx brought this instead
Very cool dress watch
That will look so good and serve you well for a very long time
@TracePhoto: Agree. I have a similar attitude and values. However, I bought the green Gent.
This is exactly right. I’m beginning to accept what I can and cannot afford. It’s really important to do rather than getting into significant debt.
Tolles Video. Ich habe die Tissot in blau. Sie ist sehr hochwertig. Bin sehr zufrieden
my personal favourite is Tissot Gentleman open heart. which by the way i will buy it very soon
I just picked one up and I think it stands on its own feet. I absolutely love it.
Right on! Glad you like it. Yes, I still quite like mine as well
Excellent video.
Right on! Yes the blue is beautiful! Glad to hear you are enjoying your watch!
Wonderfully produced video, great lighting!
Great way of presenting this watch
Lovely review
Keep it going brother
Subscribed. Look forward to more content. thank you.
I appreciate that PJ - Thank you sir!
I bought a Tissot Gentleman on a leather strap. Will It accept a Bracelet, if so, Do You want to sell Yours?
Tissot is doing some great things these days. Hamilton too.
Hey man, great video. Your production level is that of channels with many thousands of subscribers!
Thank you Justin! I appreciate the encouraging comment! Been having a lot of fun producing these little videos too
Enjoyed hearing the history of Tissot.
Glad you enjoyed it! I had a good time learning all about their origin and impact in the world of horology!
FYI, the early Tissot "Antimagnetique" models achieved magnetic resistance by using a palladium alloy in the escapement.
My favourite tissot is the couturier small second hand white, photos do not do the time piece justice.
Design, build quality, integrated strap BEAUTIFUL
That does sound nice! I have never seen one in person but I have no doubts it is a great looking watch to see in person. Tissot makes amazing watches but they put up these lame renders on their website that make it hard to really appreciate what the watches look like in real life
I own the Gent PM80 Silicium, black dial with crosshair, a solid piece in the collection, beautifully simple dial with workhorse movement
I just bought this watch today in green dial with crossline. My wristsize at 6+ but its fine. Beautiful watch. Got 20,% discounted at Rivoli Shop.
I wear mine every day and have the green face. It keeps amazing time never even have to wind it up. I get lots of compliments on it.
Right on! Glad to hear it!
I'm starting Grad school in Engineering Acoustics, I'm eyeing the green dial.
Congratulations! That is very cool. Yes the green dial is quite nice!
Great video with wonderful shots.
Meine läuft 80 Std.
Just bought the green dial version, love it. Super video too.
Good choice and glad you are enjoying it!
What's the accuracy?
That thing is gorgeous. It's gonna be my next purchase!
Indeed! I especially like the hour markers. They do an amazing job of catching the light!
You won't be disappointed if you go with this one. There's a blue dial version that you should see. It is something else with the sun burst effect.
Tissot has scooped the market with this beauty, I can tell ya. I see no downside.
No question! Tissot has been crushing it lately!
I was torn between getting the Gentleman or the Open Heart Gentleman. I think I've settled on getting the Gentleman (blue dial), the open heart is interesting but a bit too flashy for me.
The Rolex Datejust was my dreamwatch, but even in the secondhand market was too much money for me, This Tissot would fill my dream 😊
Not sure about cordovan, but I can confirm that it looks fantastic on a medium brown strap.
Quality review! 👍 I just needed a fairly accurate, do-it-all, automatic watch with antimagnetic properties. That's it. For me, the Gentleman ticked all the boxes. Sometimes people just want a reliable watch.
That is a good point and this one definitely meets those criteria! Sounds like you are enjoying yours. Glad to hear it!
I have the Visodate, and I would love to get that wonderful vintage looking chrono (Heritage 1948). The Gentleman or the PRX are very likely to follow,... Cheers!
@Paulo1901: Well said.
Tissot is probably the best brand for non posers who just seeking a good quality watch that looks good
I agree! In the sub $1500 price range they are among the best! Great value for what you get
Great review and congrats on your new career at grad school.
Nice one !
Yep! That is well said
Im considering buying this watch or Hamilton khaki auto. But Tissot looks more classy and have better finish in detail. Thanks for review!
Both are great choices! Both wear easily in almost all settings too
It also looks like an Omega aqua tera, and plenty other watches on the market.
You can even take a tudor black bay 36/41 In consideration 😎
Looking forward to hear your thoughts.
DU class of 2011! Campus is looking nice these days. Great review of a classy piece.
Right on - very cool Alex! What did you study? Haha, it would be funny if we had some of the same professors. I am in the Molecular Bio department and am researching TBI at DUs Knobel Institute for Healthy Aging.
@@TheTimelyFocus I earned a BA in Political Science at the College of AHSS, so probably not much overlap with Bio fields.

Thank you so much!
I'd definitely watch that video 😁
Awesome history that explains why they are very similar with Omega Aqua Terra
Indeed! Very cool history. Glad you enjoyed it!
Lol
Love this watch!!
This watch feels like something I would like to wear for the rest of my life.
question....which watch will u wear in today's world..? rolex or this stunning watch
Thx, i think i go for the green dial. There is no way people will recognize it as rolex
That is a great move! Good choice!
My next watch! Not really in same category or a knockoff, but, an affordable homage to the OP.
Great choice! And yes, that sounds like a reasonable way to put it
I think it looking like a Rolex at 1/10th the price is a plus. This seems to be an extremely high quality piece at an affordable price point. Rolex it’s not obviously, but for the money, you get a darn good watch, that is an eye catcher. This I will own one day, don’t need a Rolex.
Yes it is extremely impressive what Tissot can do at a fraction of the price of Rolex!
I think I'm just gonna get to the store and buy one today, because it's available instantly, not like Rolex... also, a lot of money saved. Oyster Perpetual used to be twice as less in terms of cost.
It is a sweet watch! Definitely an incredible value too!
I think they all can share many characteristics, it's similar to the Tag calibre 5 too
Oh that is another similar watch! Good point.
The warranty is transferable so gray market is ok if the seller is reputable.
Oh interesting! That is good to know. Thank you!
In my opinion i would say that tissot is deferent enough from rolex because of its hands,so it doesn't look like a rolex homage. Exactly the way that Tudor does!
Is it serviceable and do I even need to?cuz I’m confused
I am thinking of purchasing Tissot gentleman powermatic 80 openheart blue dial. Would like some advice... asking price is 915usd.
That’s a great watch! You will enjoy it but better deals can be had. Retail price from an AD here in the is lower than that and I currently see them for about $700 here. Hope this helps!

Thank you
Would you think I’d better that Hamilton?
You remind me of a cross between Mr. Rogers and Carrot Top ..😄👌🏽
lol, I could see it
@@TheTimelyFocus ha ha! Thanks for the great watch review, my bro
- I dislike the display case back. I’d rather it solid to make it thinner. I also don’t like how wide the bezel is.
Interesting! You must like thin watches. I feel ya on the bezel though. I generally prefer thin bezels as well
I enjoyed this break down
A bit too harsh, this an absolute stunner of a watch and no one who knows anything about watches is ever going to compare it to a ROP
I appreciate the comment and hearing from other watch enthusiasts! Thanks!
Screw down crown would make it a “perfect”watch.
True that would be a huge plus!
Since the visuals of the movement are relatively mundane, they should dump the expense of the display case-back in favour of the screw-down crown.
Best video yet!🔥🔥🔥
Thank you David! Glad you enjoyed it!
Really very good info.....Thanks.
My pleasure!
@@TheTimelyFocus Alright, thank you!
Awesome - subscribed !!!
Thank you sir!
The Gentleman is considerably larger so I would take a good long look at these Nomos offerings as well
@@TheTimelyFocus Yes, it is 34mm. Good time to sell it. Bought it new 30 years ago and still have the box/papers. Thanks for the tips.
PRX or Gentleman? Which watch quality is better?
Ich habe beide. Sind beide in erstklassiger Qualität. Ich liebe beide
Should I purchase Tissot gentleman or Tissot ballade which one is better
Tough question. They are both great watches. I actually owned the Ballade for many years and really enjoyed it. It is definitely more of a formal/dress watch than the Gentleman which is more of an everyday watch that is highly versatile. They both have the same movement which is great but the Gentleman does have double the water resistance at 100m as opposed to 50m. Other than that it really just comes down to which you like the looks/style of better and or which you can find the better deal on. I think either would be a great choice!
@@TheTimelyFocus I wanted to ask you my friend how many years this Tissot gentleman will last about 50 years
@@harshalmankar4710 another great question.
I personally think it’s hard to make it not look like an OP. What I want to ask is what the longevity looks like for a Tissot compared to a Rolex.
Is it serviceable?
i was about to get myself a tissot gentleman, but after u compared with the Rolex perpetual. now I need to rethink of getting it. =(. Nice video btw
Well I just ordered one with the lovely green dial, so I guess I’m really leaning into the Rolex knock off LOL
Haha, right on! Yes I still quite enjoy mine as well! The green one is really cool. Sometimes I wish I bought that one instead. Congratulations on your new purchase. I hope you get decades of enjoyment out of your new watch!
This watch deserved a COSC movement. Shame that Tissot didn't think of this.
That would have been nice! COSC certification does increase costs a bit so I bet they wanted to be able to deliver as good a watch as possible while still keeping costs relatively low. Mine runs well within COSC tolerances at about 1 second fast per day. Not sure if mine is the rule or exception but most Tissot watches I have or have had experience with also run pretty accurately as well
Great review , great watch.
Gent xl is definitely the bestest of best in my opinion..
