Remember reading about Willis O’Brien being screwed over with this film. It took a toll on his health and died soon after. Damn shame he deserved better.
Actually, his health had begun to decline several years earlier, both from losing projects to his protege, Ray Harryhausen, and to Hollywood producers believing him to be past his prime. The latter has some value, as he often supervised productions and let others, like Pete Peterson and Harryhausen, do most of the animation work, such as with 1949's "Mighty Joe Young." Later productions either never developed or were low-budget affairs that gave him little to do. For "Behemoth, the Sea Monster," budget cuts forced him to use a wooden model that bobbed in the water and could not move its neck (see the infamous ferry scene). In "The Black Scorpion," the special effects budget ran out and several scenes of the scorpion remain as see-through matte shots. Also, Irwin Allen hired O'Brien but opted to go for the lazy method of gluing horns on lizards to pass as dinosaurs. Then, in 1956, O'Brien wrote the treatment for "The Beast From Hollow Mountain" and sold the idea to his "good" friend Edward Nassour, who promised to hire O'Brien as animator. Nassour promptly took the idea, reworked it, hired another animator and actually barred O'Brien from the set. As for "King Kong vs. Godzilla," Toho's involvement meant guys in rubber suits, so there would have been little to no room for O'Brien's involvement. Also, O'Brien had already suffered several minor heart attacks, was 76 years old and no one was sure he could have even handled the rigors of doing a major motion picture.
Hence when I said it took a toll on him. He literally died months later, he was quite the tragic figure. His children were murdered by his wife, he struggled financially and got shafted on something he helped create. Remember Kong is as much his as it was Coopers. Either way it is a damn shame.

Out of all the channels I'm subscribed to this show always has had a certain quality to it that I genuinely enjoy hell I think I've been subscribed ever since the mystics in Bali review and the show just keeps staying great which is refreshing considering most shows get worse overtime I think it's rather impressive!.
I'll always have fond memories of this film for being my first Godzilla film that I ever saw. Living in the UK in the early 2000's made it pretty hard to find any of the Godzilla films on DVD other than the '98 version (heck it's still hard to find them), but I'd seen him in plenty of books about movie monsters and had figures of him from trips to America, but I'll never forget the scene when he breaks out of the ice, really felt like a right of passage as a kid getting to finally see the character on screen. I'd have to say this has probably my favourite Godzilla suit, it's goofy and far from the best looking one but it's my mind's eye of the character.
another great video !!! So much respect for all the hard work you put into these videos.
"Cephalopunk", LMAO.
Loved the story of Kong v Frankies African Monster Jam, never would have known if you didnt mention it. Cant afford to patreon right now, but i promise never to skip the adverts during your videos :P
"Kong Pow"
- Brandon Tenold, March 2021
After this film Mothra vs. Godzilla 1964 also has continuity with this film as well with godzilla entrance
Ah, Godzilla, Kong, real Octopi, excessive map pointing, and a Babymetal reference? What more could you possibly want?
Another Babymetal song in part 2!
Woo hoo! Yeah!
Kitsune up for Gojira!
I loved the Baby Metal reference, I wish it was something from Band Maid but I fully understand using "Gimme Chocolate".
Always enjoy your reviews, no matter the subject!
I've been waiting for you to cover this for a looong ass time! My prayers have finally been answered!
Fun fact: This film is on THE CRITERION COLLECTION.
Yeah, pretty much all of the Godzilla movies are on Criterion. It makes collecting them all really expensive...
WHAT.
@@otaking3582 only the showa era, but it does include the japanese and American versions of this movie, also.its alot cheaper buying them all in the collection than individually
More importantly, the superior Japanese version is on the Criterion Collection. It's the only legal way to watch it in the West.
"baby metal" and I immediately start head banging lol
I've loved this film ever since I first saw it in 1972 on the Saturday afternoon creature feature!
I still have that dinosaur book from when i was in grade school!
11:04 Man that guy really is a dinosaur expert. He even got a children's picture book of 'em!
EDIT: Oops. How could I think Brandon wouldn't make fun of this. My bad.
Finally you do you do another Godzilla video
Godzila biggest show off is his Hollywood star of fame
Kong doesn’t have a Star? That sucks.
@@tbirdUCW6ReAJ I like to comment to people who say What does godzilla has that kong doesnt
Time to watch this quickly before it goes the way of your Godzilla Vs Gigan review. Also that American footage is giving flashbacks of the US footage for Gamera.
Fun Fact: One of the characters spinning a lizard in a grassy place ends up a again in GVK where Kong (The Main Character) spins one of two warbats the same way.
And that lizard was possibly the inspiration for GvK'stake on the Foetodon.
Thank god you’re still making reviews man best channel on RUclips
Man, we butchered the movie something fierce when we brought it over. So much story and characterization thrown out because they wanted to minimize the amount of Japan in this Japanese movie, along with throwing out all of Ifukube's score. I'd argue it's worse than what happened with "Godzilla's Counterattack".
What the fuck is “Godzilla’s counterattack?”
@@Marcieishereandqueer aka "Godzilla Raids Again" aka "Gigantis the Fire Monster"
@@GoGojiraGo Ah.
14:02 that’s when me and my buddies lost it (as in laughter) when we saw this in preparation for GvK
Well the thumbnail isn't lying and it's another Brandon godzilla video,so that's nice, and that's a cool Brandon video.
13:26
my dad at Christmas parties
Not only had Godzilla attacked twice, there was also Anguirus, Rodan, Moguera, Varan, the H-Man, the Telegian, the Human Vapor, Mothra, Maguma and the Gorath asteroid.
8:13 actually they retconned it like the raids again American cut so Godzilla never attacked before, so in this continuity he’s just an dinosaurs
"Donkey Krunk" might be my new favorite line!!
Donkey Krunk vs. King K. Drool
Now all we need is Kong throwing barrels at Godzilla and Godzilla throwing a crown at Kong.
@@nicholaslienandjaja1815Krunky Kong!
Fun fact the American version of the movie uses music from the 1951 movie the golden horde you should review that
I only now realize how much more references to the classic monster movies Legendary put in their monsterverse than I thought.
Yeah, I didn't know that Kong fighting giant octopus in Skull island was actually reference to King Kong vs Godzilla similar scene.
Damn. Opening RUclips and seeing sth new from Brandon AND it's a Godzilla one? F***ing rainy day just got promoted to great day! Love from Germany, Bra!
The octopus scene was always my favorite part of this movie. It was very well done.
Damn, you got a little GoodBad Flicks on us with that in depth production scene. If I remember right, the last one you went that far with was the Ultraman video. Dig it
"Oh no, there goes Tokyo
Go go Godzilla!"
YYYYYYYEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS YOU ANSWERED MY PRAYERS LOL THANK U , n bout time u did another godzilla movie danm it
I'm a simple man, I hear a Baby Metal reference I hit 'like'.
I've watched ALL of these reviews- this one is NOW my favorite because.... BABYMETAL!!!
Ha! I knew you were going to do this review when Godzilla vs Kong was on the verge of being released! Awesome!
YOU NEED TO DO GODZILLA 1954!!! I CAN'T BELIVE YOU HAVEN"T DONE THAT ONE BEFORE!
He could do the Raymond Buuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrr version.
@@icedevilart1379 He said he'd do the Raymond Burr version
he should also do godzillas revenge and the 1998 zilla.
Nice to see my movie review suggestion that I posted on your last review come to life! Thanks, even if you were always gonna review this anyway lol
I have the original. This movie looks good. Especially the special effects.
You did it! You FINALLY, REALLY *did* it!
