When I was little, I saw a trailer for Kimba at the end of a pokemon video tape or something, and I said that looks like a Lion King ripoff. My mom said "no, they're nothing alike. They're just both about a lion". Turned out she used to watch Kimba as a kid.
i saw an ad for it after pokemon: the first movie (it was a VHS tape, so i believe this wouldve been around 2000), and remember as a kid thinking 'this looks cool!' but i didnt end up finding it on yt until ~2010 after watching P:FM again and wondering what was going on with it. good film tho! highly recommend.

The craziest thing to me was the line after, something like "Aw shucks, too bad the elephants were so bad, otherwise they didn't have to be exterminated." Like... You better do what you're told or your species will literally be genocided! Making this the moral of the story, being said by a character who literally made it his life's mission to make all the animals get along is kinda creeping me out. Sheesh, Kimba. Not to mention that this one part talking about how Africa is awakening and needs to be civilised makes it clear that all this is an allegory for Africa after colonialism, in the process of forming nation states and "civilising themselves". And, in keeping with the allegory, if they don't behave, the stronger animals (humans/former colonisers) will just have to kill everybody. Super creepy, tbh, if you look at the history of colonialism in Africa at the time.

So, Tezuka based his art on Disney animation, then Disney took influence from Jungle Tatei, and Leo '97 aped a bunch of scenes from Lion King. It's the circle of life.

They both have a very similar setting (space). They both have a lot of humanoid races (which is definitely not because the actors are humanoid). They both have space craft. That shot from Star Wars where they show the ship passing over the camera is clearly a ripoff from the Star Trek shot where they show the ship passing over the camera (which is totally not a common Sci-Fi trope). The comparisons are endless.

I started off thinking that Kimba is a young children's show, that changed more and more over the course of this video. The content got darker and darker, the wearing the fathers corpse, abuse and racial implications. Did not expect this and I'm glad I never started thinking that the lion King ripped it off and never started supporting it because yikes.
Genuinely I think this should go down in history as one of the most entertaining, informative, and well made video essays ever made. Im actually nostalgic for this video now and I have to thank Adam for taking such a large amount of effort to disprove a lie that many including myself believed. It also funny enough was one of the stepping points for me to start exploring anime

I don't know what I'm more shocked about, that this controversy has gone on for so long without almost anyone actually seeing the source material to verify it for themselves or the fact YMS dedicated so much time to debunking it he subsequently became more knowledgeable on the topic than even most Kimba/Tezuka fans are.
It was likely because as Adam said there's over 3000 minutes footage of Kimba materials to cover and unfortunately as the saying goes, it takes 2 minute to tell a lie while it takes an hour or 2 to debunk them. Even more annoying when the comparison videos cherry picked using the Kimba 1997 film, which came out 3 years after the Lion King and people still on board that Disney ripped off Kimba.
It makes perfect sense that this has gone on as long as it has. They're two things with a similar name and that's about as far as the average person will ever look into it. Beyond that, you have to be Really invested in this - to a degree that very few people have ever been - to actually justify watching a 52 episode children's cartoon because of it. Astro Boy is way more palatable as far as Tezuka's works go for me as an adult because I have some nostalgia from watching it as a kid, but I know for a fact I wouldn't be able to get more than twenty minutes into that unless I was showing it to children or someone else in the target audience. It's way worse without the benefit of nostalgia.
The guy who made this video is not knowledgable. He does not debunk. He is really bad at analysis. Analysing film is a craft with techniques you learn from books or at film school. Comparing Meia is a different brancjh all on its own. Building a heap of material, pointing to it and claiming that your preconcieved opinions are betterer is NOTHING. The Lion King would have been a much better movie if Simba dragged Mufasa's corpse with him everywhere he went and all the other characters pretended this was completely normal. And he kept talking to it and acting like his father was still alive. I think it would have been the most disturbing yet darkly hilarious movie to come out of Disney.

Though in the Kimba/Lion King case, it would have been difficult because YMS illustrated how much of the "research" for this topic is flatout wrong. One of the examples he used in people getting it wrong was *a TED Talk*. There comes a point where it's really hard to get to the bottom of stuff.
@@FelixHawthornethe thing about the TED talk, though, is that is kind of exemplifies the weakness of the argument altogether - if you've seen the lion king at all you'd know the talk isn't credible, so at that point you get curious and you actually watch the Kimba cartoon and realize the two are really nothing alike at their core.

Watching Adam dismantle this is like watching a boxing match where the victor wins by KO in the first minute, only for the fight to continue for another 30 rounds.
The first 10 minutes or so was the real match, the following 2 hours and 20 minutes was us quietly sitting in the stands while Adam continued pummeling the already rotting carcass of his opponent, scared out of our minds and hoping against all hopes that the madman didn't direct his focus onto us.

These types of videos, to me, are the rare gems of RUclips. When a content creator falls into a hole of a subject and end up finding WAY more than expected where it takes a 2 1/2 hour video to lay it all out. It becomes a passion project. Nice work YMS.

I mean, Adum deliberately chose to focus mostly on some of the craziest and most disturbing aspects of Kimba, and he relied exclusively on the crappy English dub that strays considerably from the original dialogues and adds tons of offensive connotations totally absent from the original dub. He also failed to mention the fact that animator Tom Sito openly admitted in 2015 that at some point, they had a copy of the Kimba manga in the studio and that they read it while they were still working on TLK. And finally, Adum glossed over the fact that in spite of their official statements and stance, Macoto Tezuka, Takayuki Matsutani, and Yoshihiro Shimizu all greenlit the production of a Jungle Emperor movie and short movie that both deliberately copy some elements from TLK, in order to get back at Disney without raising a stink about it (a typically Japanese attitude). I don't blame him, though. He just used exactly the same methods as the ones used by the people who made all those misleading and dishonest comparative videos and articles. In other words, he simply gave them a taste of their own medicine. Which is only fair, I guess...
@@Megrez-Alberich Let me say I enjoy this video and praise it for ending the rumor. But I disagree that its fair. Whether or not someone else did it first, if he intentionally spread misleading information, it's just as wrong as saying the Lion King plagerized Kimba. Now I'm not saying he did it on purpose. I'm sure he didn't as he only had the American dub to work with, but on the chance he did it's still wrong because it's unprofessional, and hurts his credibility as a creator. Not to mention that would be incredibly petty and unfair to fans of the Kimba series who did nothing to spread the misinformation. (A lot of us hated that rumor too! we said the people who spread it absolutely didn't watch the show but rumor spreaders wouldn't listen.) And let me say Kimba fans are getting an unfair backlash as a result of this video. I'm in a server for the series that shortly after this release, got raided and users attacked on other platforms quite a few times for enjoying the show, calling us racist for the blackface element when that part was only in the 66 sequel series and manga, that we all acknowledge as an unfortunate part that aged terribly and has nothing to do with what we like about the series as a whole. Is that fair? And here's another part he left out, Tezuka didn't know blackface was racist. He watched old cartoons with it and as a Japanese man in the 50s writing Kimba, had no idea the awful context behind it. But when he found out why it was wrong he apologized, never drew it again, even redrew parts to omit it for later editions of some of his manga. But there are people now who don't know that and assume he was racist when he truly cared about equality. If people read his manga they'd discover he wrote plenty about equality and peace messages that was far ahead of their time as works before the 80s and 90s when those themes became common. Its just liked making exaggerated characters (he even exaggerated a caricature of himself) and was ignorant of the context behind this one bad thing. (Is it fair to tarnish the legacy of a dead man who can't defend himself now? I'd call it a LOT worse than people thinking Disney only ripped off his work.) So, on the chance this was intentional I can't call this video fair. I'll say again I like the video and am glad it killed the rumor. But, no I can't call it fair.
@@kaiser8659 You're preaching to the choir. That being said, I can understand why some people have been acting so smug and aggressive since Adum published this video: they are finally "avenged"! For years, they have been insulted and accused of supporting a corrupt company, by people who know zilch about Tezuka and Kimba. Personally, I've been ridiculed and called all the names under the sun by people on both sides, simply because I love both properties equally (as you can tell from my profile picture). Yes, it's unfair, petty, childish, and it accomplishes nothing as it only adds fuel to the fire, but what goes around comes around... Not that I condone such backlash, mind you, but it was inevitable.

The "funny" thing is that it's exclusive to the American dub. In fact, most of Kimba's disturbing and/or offensive aspects shown in this video are only found in the old American dub of Kimba.

Firstly, when it comes to anime, most people will inevitably be only familiar with the English dub, so you can't exactly dismiss English dubs of anime as insignificant little edits of the original XD Like it or not, the English localization will have a massive impact on how people view it. And secondly, America didn't alter 1965's Jungle Emperor Leo to make it about an enlightened white lion raised by humans trying to civilize the savage animals of Africa. A few more blatantly colonialist lines added in the English dub don't add much to the issue. Or all the blackface and child abuse present in the second series, that was Japan's decision XD

Which is hardly surprising, given the poor treatment given to Japanese animation in the US (Sailor Moon, DBZ, Battle of the Planets, Knights of the Zodiac, Princess Mononoke, etc.). The story of Jungle Emperor is about a white lion king naively trying to "civilize" the animals living on his domain... and failing miserably. It also involves humans, mostly white settlers, who foolishly think they can "beat" and "tame" Africa... and fail miserably. That's the message conveyed in the original dub. That you should respect Mother Nature and all creatures. Onward, Leo! is also butchered in the American dub. Raiya, for example, never says in Japanese that Leo hitting his son is no big deal. In the original dub, she's mad at Leo and tears him a new one. In the original dub, the natives speak in normal, unaccented Japanese, whereas they speak in broken English in the US dub (same thing with Killer in DBZ: the Americans apparently found it hilarious and perfectly acceptable in the late 90s to have a black character talk gibberish). Besides, dated and offensive racial stereotypes due to sheer ignorance (the Japanese simply copying what they saw in Western productions because they didn't know any better in those days, having never seen someone from a different ethnicity in real life) doesn't make Kimba a "minstrel show", seeing as there is no malice and no deliberate intention of dehumanizing and mocking the natives... In both cases it's terribly offensive, but for different reasons...

Japanese animation has been popular in lots of countries around the world for a long time now, sometimes since the 70s especially in Europe. Not everybody commenting here is American or familiar with the English dub of Kimba. I personally watched Kimba in French first, then in German, then a bit in Italian and Spanish, then in English, and finally in Japanese. I was floored - and horrified - when I saw how different the US dub was, with tons of offensive stuff, altered dialogues, made up lines and whatnot that are either totally absent from the other foreign dubs (including the original Japanese one), or at least much more nuanced. I understand why Adum found Kimba highly offensive, and I would probably be offended too if my sole exposure to the old TV show from the 60s was the shitty American dub in which they say that white lions are inherently superior and therefore natural born leaders, that the elephants kind of deserved to be exterminated because they were mean, or that it's high time for the dark continent to abandon voodoo mask and silly superstitions and to finally embrace civilisation... But that was not my personal experience with Kimba.

A year late but this is where delivery is almost crucial to how a line is interpreted. How I image the line was meant to be was that he was adding more insults like "Wait, He's not just a coward. He's a *blind whimpering* coward!". Thought it does add a nice funny aspect that the leopard was trying to think of something more scathing but backpedaled hard haha
@@tino9117 I think something to remember is that they were TV cartoons and not theatre-level motion pictures so you have to think of something more like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, not early Disney.
I actually did watch a few Kimba episodes a while back because of the controversy. The Lion King is my favorite animated movie of all time (largely due to Scar) and being told that it was a blatant rip-off of an older anime just made me curious about what was apparently The Lion King in anime form. After watching a few episodes, it was clear that they weren’t anything alike. I did still try to watch it for its own merit, but it just wasn’t for me.

I probably saw older kimba vs lion king videos while looking up clips of the movies, and started watching kimba stuff on youtube because I was under the impression it was practically more lion king content. I think I only saw the 1991 ova film and then like 5 episodes of the og series before I got bored lmao
For me, I love Lion King and I know Disney is prone to taking influence from others, but I just kind of dismissed it because I’m gonna be honest the anime crowd resorts to plagiarism/ripoff allegations all the time. And they try to be possessive of genres in its entirety, especially sci-fi, or just think anime series/art exist in isolation. For example I’m a huge fan of Gerry Anderson and its a fact that Hideaki Anno took inspiration from him, something that i think a lot of weebs would be unwilling to recognise lest it tarnish their idea of anime as wholly unique. Idk the Kimba controversy always seemed dicy, i mean seriously when you see the two posters of a white and a yellow lion trying to bait you into outrage its just ridiculous, no one can patent a fucking cartoon about lions and the savannah, thats one of the most popular settings i can think of for children’s media.

That indian woman who did the TED talk has NEVER EVER seen The Lion King. I am 100% sure of this. Because even as a kid I can remember always looking at Mufasas appiration and always knowing it was of him in the clouds. NOT IN/ON A MOON.
Judging from the title of her book my guess is that she is one of those people who hates the idea of western civilization and tries to claim that everything good that come from it was stolen.
The only thing that stopped me believing in the lion king being plagiarism discussion was one scene someone showed had humans in it. That by itself made me realise something was wrong. Human existence in a story about animals, however you choose to represent them, will always heavy change and skew what the story is. It's unavoidable. So if Kimba had humans in it, there was no way it could be the same story. Turns out, yeah, that's one of the biggest things, Kimba is a story about a lion wanting to be more like humans (plus a lot of other weird stuff).
That's what I felt, I watched the 97 movie and was like, 'wow there are some similarities but the stories are so deeply different? I always assumed there was some inspiration, but they seem really different!' Turns out there was even less in common in the earlier series' I didn't watch.

You can be a "professor" without having a lick of insight, provided you know the right school that can accept the right bribes. I'm just glad that (most) younger people seem to care about factual honesty.
Law Professors aren't really members of academia in the same way that other professors are. Law Schools are professional school, you don't learn how to conduct research outside of issues of law. Additionally, books don't really go through peer review in the same way that an article will. It's the responsibility of the author and their publisher to be responsible, and obviously no one except for a select group of furries know enough about Kimba to refute the part of her book that talks about Kimba and the Lion King. And yeah, don't cite Wikipedia. It's the sources in Wikipedia that you want to draw from. Your teachers weren't stupid for trying to make you do the right thing. The failure belongs to Madhavi Sunder for making baseless claims.

Adum's video here is the first thing you get when you search "Kimba" on RUclips, and Adum, like any RUclipsr that gains moderate success, has an obnoxious portion of his fanbase that shuts down every conversation of this topic anywhere by linking this video. Adum's influence as a RUclipsr spans far and wide, because many of the things he's said have become very common. He's the one who began that Childhood Trauma trend, and a lot of people don't realize it. I think that after a while, this video will cause the Kimba Conspiracy to die out. There will always be people who believe it, just like there will always be people who love Cyberbu//y. But on the flip side there will always be way more people who remember it for being a massive meme.

Leo is known as Leo in a lot of countries around the world, and the controversy happened in those countries, too. And back then, there was no internet or youtube with misleading comparative videos Heck, here in France lots of people started pointing out the similarities as soon as the movie came out in 1994, and it had nothing to do with the character's name. That being said, we just had a complete rerun of the 78 original episodes of "Le roi Leo" on French television between 1989 and 1990, on a very popular kids show. So, it was still fresh in people's minds, not like in the US where people said TLK reminded them of that old cartoon they used to watch in the 60s.

The craziest thing to me was the line after, something like "Aw shucks, too bad the elephants were so bad, otherwise they didn't have to be exterminated." Like... You better do what you're told or your species will literally be genocided! Making this the moral of the story, being said by a character who literally made it his life's mission to make all the animals get along is kinda creeping me out. Sheesh, Kimba.
Not to mention that this one part talking about how Africa is awakening and needs to be civilised makes it clear that all this is an allegory for Africa after colonialism, in the process of forming nation states and "civilising themselves". And, in keeping with the allegory, if they don't behave, the stronger animals (humans/former colonisers) will just have to kill everybody.

They both have a very similar setting (space). They both have a lot of humanoid races (which is definitely not because the actors are humanoid). They both have space craft. That shot from Star Wars where they show the ship passing over the camera is clearly a ripoff from the Star Trek shot where they show the ship passing over the camera (which is totally not a common Sci-Fi trope). The comparisons are endless.

I started off thinking that Kimba is a young children's show, that changed more and more over the course of this video. The content got darker and darker, the wearing the fathers corpse, abuse and racial implications. Did not expect this and I'm glad I never started thinking that the lion King ripped it off and never started supporting it because yikes.

I don't know what I'm more shocked about, that this controversy has gone on for so long without almost anyone actually seeing the source material to verify it for themselves or the fact YMS dedicated so much time to debunking it he subsequently became more knowledgeable on the topic than even most Kimba/Tezuka fans are.
I'm more shocked about the former. It seems that nobody in that argument even knew a bit of Swahili.
It was likely because as Adam said there's over 3000 minutes footage of Kimba materials to cover and unfortunately as the saying goes, it takes 2 minute to tell a lie while it takes an hour or 2 to debunk them. Even more annoying when the comparison videos cherry picked using the Kimba 1997 film, which came out 3 years after the Lion King and people still on board that Disney ripped off Kimba.
It makes perfect sense that this has gone on as long as it has. They're two things with a similar name and that's about as far as the average person will ever look into it. Beyond that, you have to be Really invested in this - to a degree that very few people have ever been - to actually justify watching a 52 episode children's cartoon because of it. Astro Boy is way more palatable as far as Tezuka's works go for me as an adult because I have some nostalgia from watching it as a kid, but I know for a fact I wouldn't be able to get more than twenty minutes into that unless I was showing it to children or someone else in the target audience. It's way worse without the benefit of nostalgia.
Tezuka was also wrote some gay manga!

God, I wish more people got that message inside their thick skulls. It would literally solve 90% of petty internet arguments we see everywhere, especially social media.
Though in the Kimba/Lion King case, it would have been difficult because YMS illustrated how much of the "research" for this topic is flatout wrong. One of the examples he used in people getting it wrong was *a TED Talk*. There comes a point where it's really hard to get to the bottom of stuff.

Watching Adam dismantle this is like watching a boxing match where the victor wins by KO in the first minute, only for the fight to continue for another 30 rounds.

These types of videos, to me, are the rare gems of RUclips. When a content creator falls into a hole of a subject and end up finding WAY more than expected where it takes a 2 1/2 hour video to lay it all out. It becomes a passion project. Nice work YMS.

Sorta. He did kill the controversy but he did spread some misconceptions about the Kimba series. I don't think he intended it though.

I mean, Adum deliberately chose to focus mostly on some of the craziest and most disturbing aspects of Kimba, and he relied exclusively on the crappy English dub that strays considerably from the original dialogues and adds tons of offensive connotations totally absent from the original dub. He also failed to mention the fact that animator Tom Sito openly admitted in 2015 that at some point, they had a copy of the Kimba manga in the studio and that they read it while they were still working on TLK. And finally, Adum glossed over the fact that in spite of their official statements and stance, Macoto Tezuka, Takayuki Matsutani, and Yoshihiro Shimizu all greenlit the production of a Jungle Emperor movie and short movie that both deliberately copy some elements from TLK, in order to get back at Disney without raising a stink about it (a typically Japanese attitude).
I don't blame him, though. He just used exactly the same methods as the ones used by the people who made all those misleading and dishonest comparative videos and articles. In other words, he simply gave them a taste of their own medicine. Which is only fair, I guess...
@@Megrez-Alberich Let me say I enjoy this video and praise it for ending the rumor. But I disagree that its fair. Whether or not someone else did it first, if he intentionally spread misleading information, it's just as wrong as saying the Lion King plagerized Kimba.
Now I'm not saying he did it on purpose. I'm sure he didn't as he only had the American dub to work with, but on the chance he did it's still wrong because it's unprofessional, and hurts his credibility as a creator.
Not to mention that would be incredibly petty and unfair to fans of the Kimba series who did nothing to spread the misinformation. (A lot of us hated that rumor too! we said the people who spread it absolutely didn't watch the show but rumor spreaders wouldn't listen.)
And let me say Kimba fans are getting an unfair backlash as a result of this video. I'm in a server for the series that shortly after this release, got raided and users attacked on other platforms quite a few times for enjoying the show, calling us racist for the blackface element when that part was only in the 66 sequel series and manga, that we all acknowledge as an unfortunate part that aged terribly and has nothing to do with what we like about the series as a whole.
Is that fair?
And here's another part he left out, Tezuka didn't know blackface was racist. He watched old cartoons with it and as a Japanese man in the 50s writing Kimba, had no idea the awful context behind it.
But when he found out why it was wrong he apologized, never drew it again, even redrew parts to omit it for later editions of some of his manga. But there are people now who don't know that and assume he was racist when he truly cared about equality. If people read his manga they'd discover he wrote plenty about equality and peace messages that was far ahead of their time as works before the 80s and 90s when those themes became common. Its just liked making exaggerated characters (he even exaggerated a caricature of himself) and was ignorant of the context behind this one bad thing.
(Is it fair to tarnish the legacy of a dead man who can't defend himself now? I'd call it a LOT worse than people thinking Disney only ripped off his work.)
So, on the chance this was intentional I can't call this video fair. I'll say again I like the video and am glad it killed the rumor. But, no I can't call it fair.

The "funny" thing is that it's exclusive to the American dub. In fact, most of Kimba's disturbing and/or offensive aspects shown in this video are only found in the old American dub of Kimba.

Which is hardly surprising, given the poor treatment given to Japanese animation in the US (Sailor Moon, DBZ, Battle of the Planets, Knights of the Zodiac, Princess Mononoke, etc.).
The story of Jungle Emperor is about a white lion king naively trying to "civilize" the animals living on his domain... and failing miserably. It also involves humans, mostly white settlers, who foolishly think they can "beat" and "tame" Africa... and fail miserably. That's the message conveyed in the original dub. That you should respect Mother Nature and all creatures.
Onward, Leo! is also butchered in the American dub. Raiya, for example, never says in Japanese that Leo hitting his son is no big deal. In the original dub, she's mad at Leo and tears him a new one. In the original dub, the natives speak in normal, unaccented Japanese, whereas they speak in broken English in the US dub (same thing with Killer in DBZ: the Americans apparently found it hilarious and perfectly acceptable in the late 90s to have a black character talk gibberish).
Besides, dated and offensive racial stereotypes due to sheer ignorance (the Japanese simply copying what they saw in Western productions because they didn't know any better in those days, having never seen someone from a different ethnicity in real life) doesn't make Kimba a "minstrel show", seeing as there is no malice and no deliberate intention of dehumanizing and mocking the natives...
In both cases it's terribly offensive, but for different reasons...

Most people, really? Japanese animation has been popular in lots of countries around the world for a long time now, sometimes since the 70s especially in Europe.
Not everybody commenting here is American or familiar with the English dub of Kimba.
I personally watched Kimba in French first, then in German, then a bit in Italian and Spanish, then in English, and finally in Japanese.
I was floored - and horrified - when I saw how different the US dub was, with tons of offensive stuff, altered dialogues, made up lines and whatnot that are either totally absent from the other foreign dubs (including the original Japanese one), or at least much more nuanced.
I understand why Adum found Kimba highly offensive, and I would probably be offended too if my sole exposure to the old TV show from the 60s was the shitty American dub in which they say that white lions are inherently superior and therefore natural born leaders, that the elephants kind of deserved to be exterminated because they were mean, or that it's high time for the dark continent to abandon voodoo mask and silly superstitions and to finally embrace civilisation... But that was not my personal experience with Kimba.

A year late but this is where delivery is almost crucial to how a line is interpreted. How I image the line was meant to be was that he was adding more insults like "Wait, He's not just a coward. He's a *blind whimpering* coward!".

I think something to remember is that they were TV cartoons and not theatre-level motion pictures so you have to think of something more like a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, not early Disney.
I actually did watch a few Kimba episodes a while back because of the controversy. The Lion King is my favorite animated movie of all time (largely due to Scar) and being told that it was a blatant rip-off of an older anime just made me curious about what was apparently The Lion King in anime form. After watching a few episodes, it was clear that they weren’t anything alike. I did still try to watch it for its own merit, but it just wasn’t for me.

I probably saw older kimba vs lion king videos while looking up clips of the movies, and started watching kimba stuff on youtube because I was under the impression it was practically more lion king content. For me, I love Lion King and I know Disney is prone to taking influence from others, but I just kind of dismissed it because I’m gonna be honest the anime crowd resorts to plagiarism/ripoff allegations all the time. And they try to be possessive of genres in its entirety, especially sci-fi, or just think anime series/art exist in isolation. For example I’m a huge fan of Gerry Anderson and its a fact that Hideaki Anno took inspiration from him, something that i think a lot of weebs would be unwilling to recognise lest it tarnish their idea of anime as wholly unique. The only thing that stopped me believing in the lion king being plagiarism discussion was one scene someone showed had humans in it. That by itself made me realise something was wrong. Human existence in a story about animals, however you choose to represent them, will always heavy change and skew what the story is. It's unavoidable. So if Kimba had humans in it, there was no way it could be the same story. Turns out, yeah, that's one of the biggest things, Kimba is a story about a lion wanting to be more like humans (plus a lot of other weird stuff).
That's what I felt, I watched the 97 movie and was like, 'wow there are some similarities but the stories are so deeply different? I always assumed there was some inspiration, but they seem really different!'
Turns out there was even less in common in the earlier series' I didn't watch.

Law Professors aren't really members of academia in the same way that other professors are. Law Schools are professional school, you don't learn how to conduct research outside of issues of law.
Additionally, books don't really go through peer review in the same way that an article will. It's the responsibility of the author and their publisher to be responsible, and obviously no one except for a select group of furries know enough about Kimba to refute the part of her book that talks about Kimba and the Lion King.
And yeah, don't cite Wikipedia. It's the sources in Wikipedia that you want to draw from. Your teachers weren't stupid for trying to make you do the right thing. The failure belongs to Madhavi Sunder for making baseless claims.

Adum's influence as a RUclipsr spans far and wide, because many of the things he's said have become very common. He's the one who began that Childhood Trauma trend, and a lot of people don't realize it. I think that after a while, this video will cause the Kimba Conspiracy to die out. Leo is known as Leo in a lot of countries around the world, and the controversy happened in those countries, too. And back then, there was no internet or youtube with misleading comparative videos
Heck, here in France lots of people started pointing out the similarities as soon as the movie came out in 1994, and it had nothing to do with the character's name. That being said, we just had a complete rerun of the 78 original episodes of "Le roi Leo" on French television between 1989 and 1990, on a very popular kids show. So, it was still fresh in people's minds, not like in the US where people said TLK reminded them of that old cartoon they used to watch in the 60s.

I recognize some of the photos the lady used in her TED talk. She ripped them straight from an article posted one of the oldest Kimba fansited called "Kimba W. Lion's Corner of the Web". Seriously, she didn't even bother to remove the cyan background. A person criticizing someone for supposed plagiarism while committing theft of intellectual property herself. I'm facepalming so hard right now.

Found the site described. It looks like the law professor's images are actually screenshots taken from the "Scar himself looks like foreign, weak, and with very female moves" video, which almost definitely got its images from the website through screenshots. All comparison images from the site's "Disney?" subpage are found in the video. That would explain the low resolution of the Ted Talk images.
Just to be sure, I checked the original video and there is no list of sources. It's still possible that the professor's images were taken from the fansite. But if she did she probably would've cited the source and there's no way Adum would have let that slide without a single mention.
I'm nitpicking, I know. The conversation is supposed to be about the law professor taking someone else's work while putting in minimal work on her part. I still think it's important that we keep all our facts straight.
