Hey! Hope you enjoyed this review. I'm streaming some games on twitch right now if anyone wants to say hi. www.Twitch.tv/AdumPlaze
Can I say hi here?
Hi big man
Sit on my face daddy!
Worth the wait!
hi
The dumpling that they use in the korea version is a type of dumpling that you often get as a side-dish when ordering delivery food. So it implies that the character is probably eating a side-dish of someone else’s main dish for fifteen years. Just an extra info dump,
So what your saying is in the remake, they should’ve given him nothing but mozzarella sticks, or onion rings, or something?
@@goORIOLES236 doesn't have to be the exact equivalent, but it would have been nice if they kept the kind of foods as effortless as the original one
Brian Tully think italian seasoned breadsticks
That added another layer of depth to it, thanks so much for sharing!
@@goORIOLES236 lol that's funny~
The whole point of Dae-su cutting his tongue out at the end was to show that he was apologizing for "talking too much." The form of self-sacrifice he chose was actually relevant to the crime that he was being accused of, and that's why Joo-win was moved to spare Mido. Joe just imprisoning himself for no reason cause he feels bad is so dumb.
Also he said he would be Joo-win's dog to save her, so it could be connected to that as well.
Anyways I never thought of that connection! Thank you for enlightening me
Also mirroring Oedipus doing the same to his eyes after realizing his incestuous ways.
Totally agree! But just a nitpick not intending of being a dick, but he's Woo-jin, his name is Lee Woo-jin..
@@nico.f. The director said that Oh Dae-su is actually a play with the name Oedipus, so you're pretty right.
Woaah
Surprised Adum didn't mention that Oh Desu oversharing in the opening sequence also conveys the characteristic that motivated the antagonist.
Good observation. It goes to show the depth of writing in the original
Also love the parallelism of Oh Dae-Su holding that stranger from falling off the building and Woo Jin holding his sister from falling off the bridge, both of whom die while Oh Dae-Su could have potentially prevented it.
Oh Desu
Fucking brilliant
Varun and TheMightyHaegr
You two have a very keen eye
I didn’t notice these until you both mentioned them. Just further proof of this movie’s competence in comparison to Spike’s “interpretation”. You could probably go back and find nothing that really makes you analyze the film like the original. That whole scene in the remake where his daughter gets the stupid Buddha is the writers and Spike desperately trying to capture that sort of feeling but it instead falls flat on it’s face for having almost no relevancy to the plot since she had never seen it in the first place.
Oldboy (2003) > Oldboy (2013)
that's such a good point! we're given so much information in that first introduction, but what's key to the plot is the simple fact that "oh talks too much".
I love how Oh Desu's reaction to the villain at the end mirrors how he acted in the first captivity scene when the guard brought him food. He pleads, he threatens, he gets violent, then switches back to pleading once he realises he truly has no power
Another fun fact. He begins licking the villains shoes, his source of imprisonment, like how he began licking his hand upon tasting the rain when he was almost to freedom at the start of the movie.

Fact of the day: Oedipus literally translates to swollen foot…
@@AcidOverseer Oedipus doesn't apply because the original manga that all this is based on doesn't have the incest element - it's a fairly basic revenge story. The SK adaptation basically added that twist to make the film its own thing. And besides, it's not like every story that has surprise incest in it is based off of Oedipus.
And also part of an unconnected trilogy
South Korea actually requires all adult citizens to serve a compulsory period in their military so it’s very likely he has had martial arts training as a young man. Definitely a jumping off point for him to train himself well over 15 years.
Underrated comment. It actually sheds some light on what a lot of people who aren't familiar with the original culture would consider a plothole.
All adult MALE citizens. Doesn't change your point but worth the distinction
I don't even think this even needs to be said since the way he trained was just basic punches and dodges with a lot of pain tolerance. The guy was also fighting goons who weren't exactly the best and while it was choreographed, it wasn't over the top. He even got his ass kicked by a real expert at the end. That version could make sense even in a US release but they had to make him John Wick for some nonsense.
@@cityabsurdia6680 All healthy adult male citizens
You know something really important about Oldboy? Oh Dae-su is just some fuckin guy. He's complicated, he's a drunk, he neglects his family...he's just another dude in the world. And when he seeks his revenge, he's never cool and stoic. He's always just some guy, plus 1 fresh crazy pill. You never ever ever see what he's doing as cool or inspirational. He's not a morally ambiguous Hollywood action hero, with a deep gravely voice. He's just a person. And that's why he's so potent.
I don’t Know that hallway scene was pretty cool . But he is wounded pretty bad in that which does define another action hero trope
@@Galvatronover
Brother, struggling for something isn’t a trope, it’s the human condition. If the story is good, the hero will be injured in some way
Did you watch the film? The hallway scene as well as his extreme tactics like torture are meant to excite as well as disturb. Oh Dae su was a normal guy who became a psycho because of the imprisonment which is what the antagonist wanted. I do agree with your point the remake wants us to like joe despite him being significantly worse before imprisonment
@@haroldasusus4684 Don't think I ever implied that didn't happen?

The sad part about the hammer fight in the remake is that it’s completely divorced of context. In the original the reason it’s a total melee is because guns are very scarce in South Korea so thugs would just have whatever they can find. In America those thugs would absolutely have guns but it’s Oldboy so gotta have a hammer fight I guess. Same with the dumplings. Not only does this movie not give a shit but it’s actively not trying to localize and innovate on the original.
Also part of it is, I assume, due to the tight quarters. Oldboy 2013 was not only in America but not cramped enough to warrant too much fear of shooting off firearms
The director should of had the main character use a gun an kill a bunch of them John wick style.
@@lethalcontact365 that would be cool but wouldn't really make sense for the character. I just wish they had been more innovative and tried to make it feel more American, not just look it.
@@TheHutcharmy they should of had it as the main character being a marine that is a alcohol and a bum an for the the American version of a hall way fight they would of had him shooting at gangster with a shotgun after being ambushed by them after the torture season.
@@hydras5947 then the solution is to have fewer, more spread out thugs armed with guns.
One detail that I really appreciated about the scene where Oh Dae-su tries to force himself through the feeding door of his prison is just how effortless the guard handles it. The way he manages to force Oh Dae-su back into his cell and then close the door/seal the latch using only his feet and without saying a word conveys a lot of information in a really simple an seamless way. For Oh Dae-su his world has been turned completely upside down, but for the guard this is just another day in a job he's seemingly done hundreds if not thousands of times before Oh Dae-su even arrived. It's the first hint we get that these are not amateurs and that while Oh Dae-su is the main focus, he likely isn't the only prisoner, which also teases the fact that his jailers might not be the ones with a vendetta, but rather some sort of weird and twisted business.
👍
Immediately my thoughts went to slave trade, or drug trafficking, something with a cold calculus to it. The scene sells it so well.
I love that his description of his own movie is basically
“Of all the movies I have made, this sure is one of them”
One of the movies of all time
After rewatching that clip like a dozen times, I THINK what he meant was "it's gonna be another good story", because of what he said right beforehand.
Still confusing as shit, and it's very clear how unenthusiastic he was about this whole thing lol.
One thing that one reviewer pointed out was that the hammer fight makes much more sense in the original because Korea has very strict gun laws. The remake takes place in Louisiana. It makes next to no sense that he or the thugs would not have a firearm.
Didn't know that, makes sense. Very interesting bit of information regarding the film, thank you! The original movie is such a masterpiece.
Right? It would make great sense that the guards are fighting with a bunch of melee weapons in the original. But in the American version, they really expect us to believe that not one guard in a secret mercenary prison would have a gun on them??
Exactly! Hence why I feel like, if he wanted to do this movie SO bad...why not do it in a country with a stricter laws? It would've made a lot more sense if it took place in England or something. Either way, the remake sucked and did horribly on the Box Office, and I'm glad.
@@evandavis7 The remake even opens with a sign that says “Guns don’t kill, people do”. In a way it’s bizarre.
Korea is a country with strict gun laws. Korean police don't try to force the gangs down, they try to manage them (because even if they do, another organization will be formed). However, if a gangster uses a gun, the military, not the police, will be dispatched to clear it up, so Korean gangsters cannot use a gun even if they have it.
I was so enthralled by your in-depth analysis of the original old boy, that I would honestly forget you were comparing it to the remake. So anytime you transitioned to Spike Lee's version I would instantly grow disappointed because I just wanted to see more the original. If I have that feeling during a RUclips review I can only imagine how disappointing watching the entire remake must be.

For real, not only is this video a YMS Review for OldBoy (2013) is also a a great review and analysis of Oldboy (2003). I watched the original when I was 14 and stupid, and I thought it was just "alright". I never revisited the film because "I already know the twist, so what's the point?" but Adam really showed why it's a great film and it's not just because of the twist, the entire thing is a beautifully crafted and well-acted movie.
I honestly felt the same and this review really made want to watch the original version.
@ "plot-twist". Overused words weren't in need for a long time.
Oh Dae-su's hair style corresponds with his mental state, every time. Another subtle detail in a movie that is so carefully crafted. I love Park Chan-Wook.
Him and Bong Joon-ho make the best movies!
A quick side note:
In the original manga, the protagonist goes captive for ten years. Park added five for a reason. The limitation period on first degree murder was 15 years in Korea back then. Oh was framed for killing his wife, and there is a scene Lee sending Oh a chat message stating his false charge has been lifted (56:34). This period had been extended to 25 years in 2007, and finally gone limitless in 2015.
A simple question:
Why the hell did Spike Lee extend another five?
Twenty years? More like hefty tears!

He's playing by the rules he set, he's being fair. Sure he was a horrible despicable person for doing that to someone in the first place and ruining a guy's life, but at the very least he has a set of principles he follows and sticks to, and is a respectable villain. That's compelling, that's a damn good villain.
That is part of why I consider him one of the greatest villians of cinema. Just imagine how much of a mindfuck it would be to have someone both trying to destroy your life and also giving you money and the things you want..?
I Saw the Devil is sort of similar, just with the roles of "hero" and "villain" reversed. Also a great movie with Choi Min-sik
I love how the 2013 version expects us to care for Joe Doucett despite him murdering those football players.
In the original, Oh Dae-su was defending himself from street thugs beating him over a cigarette. While we never see the final outcome it's likely he just knocked them out with a few minor injuries.
In the remake, the football players thought Joe was a random creeper about to assault this defenseless woman. Granted, punching Joe is not a smart way to start things off, but Joe could've just ran away or knocked them out in *non-leathal* ways, but nope, he straight up breaks their fucking necks in front of their girlfriends. And oh right, he has *WITNESSES* now! Why didn't those girls call the police on him after he murdered their boyfriends!?! Could they not get a good description of him in *BROAD DAYLIGHT!*
Oh Dae-Su was socially inept,
Joe is a *SOCIOPATH!!!*
Not to mention that Oh Dae-su doesn't kill anyone in the movie: he beats people up and tortures them too, but he's never shown killing anyone, probably the guy he found in the prison (the one sitting there before Mr Park's office), was knocked out as well. It truly shows that, even if his main focus is revenge, he's still a normal person deep down, and would not take it out on those who didn't have a direct role in his imprisonement.
Joe just goes around and murders people!
@@myrtaleellery I think there's a few parts where you could argue that Oh Dae-su killed someone like when he first arrives at the penthouse with the broken toothbrush, but yeah the point still stands. If the remake wasn't so terrible Adam wouldn't have made a video comparing the two films and i wouldn't have watched the original, so in a way some good did come from the remake.
xxAnaconta Even though these 2 films are more well made than Oldboy 2013, The Ring and The Grudge had a more positive impact on introducing J-horror to mainstream american audiences, with Samara/Sadako, Kayako and Toshio becoming horror icons in america like Jason Vorhees, Michael Myers, etc. People remember the cursed tape, Samara crawling out of the TV, the “seven days” quote was memed to death, Kayako’s death rattle and contorted crawling body still scare people today. Hopefully this video gets enough views to give the original Oldboy more attention (I’ve never heard of it or the remake until I watched this video, Oldboy looks brilliant).
@Troin What are you talking about, Oldboy (as well as the rest of the revenge trilogy) is a Korean psychological thriller, what does Japanese horror have to do with this. And what's the point of the introduction when your average consumer doesn't even know what the plot of The Grudge is since it has almost no memes compared to The Ring
>Hopefully this video gets enough views to give the original Oldboy more attention
Dude, it's hailed as the single greatest piece of Korean cinema, just because you didn't know it doesn't mean that it suffers from lack of attention
@@anneelk9066 I think the point being that those movies were more successful, by way of being better made than Oldboy (2013), of exposing the west to their respective genres.
@@luckygitane But again, what's the point if the way most Americans engage with asian horror boils down to posting The Ring memes? And those who are actually interested in these films likely didn't start with The Grudge remake

That’s so depressing, because his posters are so good u can tell he put so much effort into making these posters look awesome for the film and what he gets, being treated horribly
and the monkey's paw has curled...
Maybe this is the comment that started the strike
Luckily he won out in the end.
In the Korean version, there was also the massive implication of how strong Lee Woo-Jin’s drive was. You see him and Oh Dae-Su grew up in an impoverished town. Knowing that Woo-Jin was able to work his way up into the riches using his own revenge as motivation is so much more palpable and lends greatly to his character without having to explicitly say anything.
In the American version, the villain already comes from a rich family and his stupid ploy for revenge just seems even more petty.

I believe he also cut his tongue to show how sorry he was that his tongue caused Woo-Jin's sister's death since he clearly states that Dae-su's tongue is what got his sister pregnant.
The fact that it also prevents him from telling the truth to Mido only came to me after the film had ended.
Brilliant scene !

I thought it was in reference to when he first threatens to cut off the guy’s hand for touching Mido, the guy says “what about my tongue?” Before walking away, implying that he... well... you know... I took it as he was cutting off his own tongue as punishment for... well... you know...................
arenkai It’s a phenomenal film that’s deserving of classic status and several oscars.
Ya know, if you're like me, and you root more for Oh Dei Su on repeat viewings than Woo-Jin...there's ONE little detail that makes up for all the crap the villain inflicted on the hero: when he hears someone from his sisters year in school, a classmate of hers, one she didn't even KNOW, call her a SLUT...that look on his face tells me Od Dei Su got the better of him; because no matter what. no matter how much Woo-Jin attempts to destroy this mans life...his sister will ALWAYS, to her generation of kids, in that school, be known as the school-house WHORE. 😂 I kind of hate Woo-Jinn really...i think he's a smug oily little baby. but i guess that's what makes the film great: Oh De Su starts things as a "villain" and because of Woo-Jin's plot against him, he actually becomes a better man; in the process the sweet and confused child who only made the mistake of falling in love with his sister then becomes an even greater monster than Oh De Su ever was.
It is also a reference to the myth of Oedipus, in which Oedipus stabs his own eyes out after finding out that he murdered his father and killed his mothrr.
Just as Oedipus cannot bear to see a world where fate has made him a kinslayer and his children the victims of incest, Daesu does not think he can continue to speak when he could potentially tell Mi-do the truth.

Making the incest in the remake one based on a vertical relationship was such a bad idea.
In the original it's two sibilings, it's a horizontal relationship. They're on equal grounds.
It's not a father abusing of his kids. It may be be wrong or disturbing, but they're both kids.
Neither of them forced the other, neither of them stood above the other.
Which makes the original movie's villain kind of tragic, despite being a huge asshole.
You feel sorry for him because you believe he thought their love was right and pure. It came naturally to them.
In the remake it was all the fault of a sick fuck who abused his kids.
The villain just looks like a victim in denial and he has no depth to him.
They thought making it more fucked up would make it deeper and it achieved the exact opposite effect.
What garbage.
Great review Adam, well worth the wait :)
Father! (bang)
thank you for taking the time to articulate this. not only did spike lee apparently believe Oldboy was just "that one super violent, cool revenge movie" and fail to get any of the nuance but this incest storyline DRASTICALLY alters the implications of just about EVERYTHING. the friend thing, too. like... they didn't have to make him interesting because he's... cool? I guess? because he's josh brolin? like what the fuck? this one hurts just from a "damaging a masterpiece THIS BAD" standpoint.
Hey, not only he's a sick fuck who abused his kids, but he's a hilarious, cartoony, over the top sick fuck who abuses his bland daughter and his hilarious, cartoony, over the top son.
I think the verticality of it isn't the defining factor, it's the way it's being represented and done. Verticality is the big factor, but the reason why I say this is to further underline the sheer incompetence of the remake in just about any aspect of the movie. There's taboo, secrecy, curiosity, care, love, playfulness, all together, in the first movie. You don't even know what to feel about their relationship. Should you condemn them? Tolerate them? Even encourage them? How guilty they really are? How responsible? Is the passion too great for them to ignore it? Is their behavior even pathological or it's some kind of understandable product of circumstances? And so on and so forth. And I think that something like this, although it would be more difficult, could be pulled off even with a vertical variant. Because the retardation of it in the remake stems from it being completely moronic and incompetent on every level and it being horizontal wouldn't change anything. Just watch the FATHER part again lol

I like how the movie where he mentions his daughter at the beginning and almost never again, but still is shown to love his daughter, he is fueled by revenge
Meanwhile in the one where the dad doesnt give a shit about his daughter he is fueled almost purely by his daughters life
If anything one of the things Dae-su did before doing the vengeance was to check up on his daughter and her whereabouts. Dae-su proceeded to do what he did once he finds out that his kid is safe and far away... which is a more effective diversion and makes the twist a lot more "Wait a second..."
One thing I like is how it doesn’t even mention his daughter past his escape, making his daughter being alive a surprise, but also makes the twist that he had sex with her as well so damn shocking.
Meanwhile in Oldboy it’s about nothing BUT the daughter. You could’ve assumed what the twist would’ve been, and even if you do get surprised, it’s nowhere near as impactful as the original.
@@TravisBroski The daughter is claimed alive though. Dae-su thought she is in foster care in Sweden.

I just had a realization that makes the 2013 movie even worse... Joe's daughter recognized him as a wanted criminal; he's wanted for killing her mother; it was made pretty clear by the false evidence that her dad killed her mom; therefore she must have known he was her dad...
This also goes into the matter that he looks no different from before the imprisonment to after. There's no reason she shouldn't recognize him unless she somehow never saw any news report regarding her mother's death, and never cared to look up and know who killed her mom, and never bothered to care knowing what her biological dad looked like...

But don't worry about that. After all, they were hypnotized...oh wait

As someone who just saw the original, it’s so funny seeing how little style there is in literally every aspect of the remake. From the direction, the color choices, the sets, the costumes, the camera work, the music, literally every aspect of the original films style was striped away. It genuinely feels like Spike Lee was forced to make this movie, so he just phoned everything in.
It's crazy right!? The lack of artistic vision in a literal sense is kinda nuts. Just the opening itself is like... what?? He's not captive at the police station, he's not talking to the camera, he doesn't seem to love his daughter at all. He's like... just an asshole.
