    I understand that in a water free formula, pH doesn't make sense. But, if the goal is to use it mixed in a little bit of watery product, wouldn't pH become relevant, since vitamin c efficacy and penetration depends on it?

    Hi Marie! I commented not to long ago about the silicone gel replacement. I’ve been wanting to try something a little different though. I kinda created my “own” formulation. But want to double check with you :)
    5% L ascorbic acid
    2% DL pantheol
    1% optiphen plus
    92% aloe Vera gel
    I do not have a lightweight liquid water but I figured that aloe Vera gel is already thin and watery. I also thought that since your vitamin C can’t contain water because there is no preservative.
    I was also thinking instead of aloe Vera gel I could do hyalouronic acid mixture and give the skin more benefits.

      Imo, don't try to make skincare for babies, just buy what reputable companies have already tested and marketed for them. If you make something and it is harmful, that would be unfortunate. I work for a cosmetic ingredient supplier and the regs when it comes to infants/toddlers are so strict, it is not a good space for DIY. It's like when people try to make their own SPF = foolish to think they can do better.

There still visible small vitamin c specs in the suspension even though I stirred this for quite some time. Could you please provide some tips on how you powdered the L-Ascorbic acid? How long it needs to be powdered and how much time to grind it up even further or what it should look like when it is fine enough to be used in this formula? Thank you so much 😊

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  2 года назад +1

      Hi Christine! Since vitamin C is not soluble in the base, there will always be some small specks, no matter how finely you grind it. This is why I recommend mixing the suspension with a water-containing product at the moment of use; it should dissolve readily in that and you'll get a smooth application. Have you tried that yet? Are you still encountering gritty vitamin C after mixing it with a hydrous toner or lotion?

    Hey Marie, I'd love to make this formulation!! Its shelf life is definitely the most amazing thing. Do you think we could replace the Silicone Gel with Aloe Vera Gel? I know it's way more sticky, but maybe adjusting the dosage and using Coco Caprylate could make the job? Thanks!! Have a great day :)

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  2 года назад +2

      Hi! That's a big no, I'm afraid. Aloe vera gel is ~99% water, and it is ESSENTIAL that this formulation remains water free. Please read the partner blog post to learn more. Happy making!

    To obtain the same texture, do you think is possible to replace the silicone gel with sucragel and increase the ester? Thank you!

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  2 года назад +1

      I don't think that would obtain the same texture; in my experience, sucragel products are FAR heavier/greasier than this silicone gel is. Sucragel also contains a bit of water, which could compromise the stability of the L-ascorbic acid. You can definitely try it, though!

  • @taniavisser27

    Hi Marie!
    I am wondering if one could add the Ascorbic acid to one of your oil to milk cleansers that does not contain water and then instead of rinsing the lotion off use it as a leave-on product? I can't find proper silicone gel nor isoamyl cocoate here is sunny SA so I have to consider alternatives. An oil emulsion sounds like an option, butIi am too inexperienced to know. Could you kindly advise?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  2 года назад

      Hi Tania! Have you read the partner blog post? I have suggested some broad stroke ideas for alternatives. Remember: it is essential that the base contain no water, and it needs to be able to suspend the L-ascorbic acid powder so it doesn't settle out. Happy experimenting!

      I have indeed. We are very limited with regards to availability (and affordability) of raw ingredients😞 That is why an oil to milk balm formula(although oilier on the skin) feels like an option. I am definitely going to give it a go. Thank you🌸

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  Год назад +2

      This formulation is a suspension, not a solution. The L-ascorbic acid is suspended (not dissolved!) in an anhydrous base.
      L-ascorbic acid is water soluble; in order for it to dissolve, a formulation needs to contain water. The key to the stability of this formulation is the absence of water.
      L-ascorbic acid will not dissolve in this formulation. It will remain solid and will be noticeable if you rub this suspension directly into the skin without mixing it with some sort of product that contains water first.
      This is why I encourage grinding and smashing the L-ascorbic acid as finely as possible and mixing it with a product that contains water before application.
      Please read the free partner blog post if you haven't for more information. Happy making!

      It prevents transepidermal water loss and is supposed to help with wounds/scarring because it forms a protective layer over the skin. Other than that there is no added benefit.

    Wow…..not everyone has time to do this. For those who do, might as well make it a hobby if you love the activity. You learn in the process too. For myself, instead of buying all the separate ingredients that I don’t even have on hand, I’d much rather buy one product with everything already in it.

      Silicones are safe, non-irritating, transepidermal water loss reducing, vegan, hypoallergenic, moisturizing, and non-toxic. There's a lot of myths out there about silicones, but they're great ingredients. I highly recommend reading this post from LabMuffin to learn more: labmuffin.com/silicone-mythbusting-with-video/. You certainly don't have to use silicones in your skincare products, but don't avoid them because you believe lies about them :)
