    Marie, Would cetyl alcohol work to give a solid lotion (massage bar) a quicker drying feel when applied to the skin. I have tried many ingredients to lessen the greasiness such as arrowroot powder, drier oils and butters but they still have a oily feel for longer than I would like to have. You are awesome, and I love how you explain everything. I just ordered your book and signed up for your class and can't wait for more fun stuff from you. Debbie

    Hi Marie, I have been interested in formulating for around 10 years now, but am still very much a beginner and only now stumbled upon your channel. Thank you for your blog and these informative videos!!
    Over the years, I have accumulated many formulating ingredients but lacked the knowledge to actually use them to formulate a cream/lotion. I am wondering if it is possible to create a lotion with all the following ingredients:
    - vegetable glycerine
    - sweet almond oil and hemp seed oil
    - beeswax
    - xantham gum
    - a bunch of essential oils
    I really want to use up the ingredients I currently own and hope to make minimal purchases on the missing ingredients. I am wondering if cetyl alcohol is the missing link? Will I be able to make a lotion with the above ingredients + cetyl alcohol? Or will I require an emulsifying wax as well?
    (I am also aware I lack a preservative, and am considering Phenoxyethanol or Liquid Germall Plus which are available in my country.)
    Looking forward to your response,
    Regards
    Genevieve

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  Год назад +2

      Hi Genevieve!
      If you want to make lotion, I've shared several different basic beginner formulations. I'm actually in the middle of a series all about natural lotion formulation-I'd start there. ruclips.net/p/PL4cZgaY9j7fMXbuFZvAv_rL83f23YJjer
      You will need an emulsifier and a preservative, and for the base formulation the series uses. I also recommend a different humectant so the pH of the product works out every time (though you'll get plenty of use out of glycerin eventually and it has a very long shelf life). You can use the almond oil stead of the Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT/Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride) I use.
      As you progress through the series you'll find uses for the gum, essential oils, and other ingredients you might have. Cetyl alcohol is not the missing link, but it is lovely.
      And as you're watching the series, please please PLEASE always read the partner blog posts as well. There is TONS of extra info in those posts and you will not get the full benefit of the free series if you don't read *and* watch ❤️
      Happy making!

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  3 месяца назад

      Gosh, that's a bummer, but not impossible to work around!
      Thankfully the pigments and powders we use and make up are not derived from coconut, so that is very important piece of the puzzle is fine.
      Silicones and isododecane would also be ok, as well as non-coconut carrier oils.
      Behenyl alcohol and brassica glycerides could be good alternatives to cetyl/stearic/cetearyl.
      You could make most of the powder formulations in my book (Make it Up: The Essential Guide to DIY Makeup and Skin Care) without any coconut derived ingredients :)

    If you put cetyl alcohol in you formulation, do you skip the btms 50 or can you use both ?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  Год назад

      Hi Tony!
      Cetyl alcohol is a thickener/hardener. BTMS-50 is a conditioning ingredient and emulsifier that will also thicken, but that's not really *why* you'd use it-it's more of an incidental thing.
      If you use a thickener instead of an emulsifier, your formulation will fail. If you use a thickener instead of a conditioning ingredient, your formulation will suffer.
      You can definitely use them together; BTMS-50 actually contains cetyl alcohol, so you're technically always using them together :)
      I highly recommend looking up both ingredients in the free Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) to learn more.
      Happy making!

    Is this what is used in the pore eraser face primers? Like baby skin intant pore eraserproduct?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  Год назад

      It might be used in some of those formulation, but it's unlikely to be the key blurring ingredient, which is usually some sort of silicone :)

    Marie, I'm looking for a fine, slick finished look in soap.. would this work? Mine is Behentrimonium methosulfate and ceteryl alcohol

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  2 года назад +2

      That's BTMS-25, not cetyl alcohol. Please look it up in the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) to learn more! It won't work well in soap as it is cationic and soap is anionic.

      @@HumblebeeAndMe it says 30. .. but ceteryl I will,?? I want finished look..
      Add glycerin to soaps. The lather is so rich.. I am using this formulation on my mother's day baskets.. scented like rose/vanilla.. with lotion same. Light pink.. and hair conditioner..

      I've had good results using polyamide-3, but it's fairly particular about what oils it will thicken. You can learn more about it in the free Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/), and if you scroll down to the bottom of the entry on it I've shared a summer body oil that uses polyamide-3 for body so you can see how a formulation using it can look :)
