I definitely made the mistake of not realising how oily they can be and also assuming that lack of water is more hydrating. The good thing about formulating is you get to see your theories play out and then see why they don't work and that then leads to more reading and learning about truths. And I've made the big batch mistake a few times.

I don't know what I was thinking 🤪🤦‍♀️ When I applied it to my skin it made the craziest sound like I was rubbing sandpaper pieces together, so bizarre! Can you believe I also gifted some it to a friend omg cringe! I haven't made another since. But I do like the sound of the emulsified body butter. Think I'll give it another go 😊

About the oil is superior and water is not mentality, that's not me 😁 In my case, I just don't know how to work with preservatives and so I skip formulations that require water. I don't have access to preservatives mentioned in most DIY videos that even if I want to try the recipe shared by a creator, I end up just watching the tutorial and then find some other recipe with no water and make that.

I can relate to you when you said that your first time making body butters you made a kilo and it didn’t come out right. The other day I was making my first DIY hair butter and I used all of the ingredients I payed so much money for and then the butter did not turn out right and I didn’t know what to do or how to fix it so I ended up wasting a kilo of butter and then flushing it down the toilet. I was devastated about wasting all the product and money used to make that butter. Then I made another batch with the little bit of product I had left and it came out very oily and kept melting so that was also saddening. This video was helpful just wish I would’ve seen it sooner. Thanks.

I also love even the smallest amount of esters in mine. I notice in the winter especially, I need a great deal more water on my skin and in summer I need a touch more oil. Just what I've observed for my own skin.

I just made a big 10 pound mistake today myself. The Shea Butter itself was Ah-MAZING to feel, to work with, the natural color was a very light tannish after processing that was pretty enough on it's own and didn't need anything to color it so it looks just stunning all bottled up, so what's the problem? The scent was so obnoxious it was nauseating. It wasn't bad or moldy or anything it was just over the top with scent and no product scent in the world would have helped it smell better but and I stuck with it and it's all bottled tonight but there was just no way I could sell that batch to my Customers because it flat out stinks! I also accidently got some on my coffee cup and I assure you that it tastes even worse than it smells so I can't make any lip products with it either but I came up with a brilliant plan and after a little research I solved the problem...
I added a light amount of raw dried Lavender Flowers in the mix with a little Almond oil and a little Garlic Oil that I pressed & processed myself a few weeks ago for a Home Remedy and blended everything together and labeled it as Whipped Skin Cream for Dogs. I am serious! Shea Butter is 100% safe and effective for dogs skin conditions just like it is for ours. I kept it light on the Lavender which is beneficial for dogs with anxiety & sleep issues, a hint of garlic which is a great flea repellant in SMALL doses and a dab of my "secret ingredient".. too much Lavender or Garlic either one is toxic to dogs in high doses so I went way light on these ingredients but it was enough to make it smell a bit better. It's safe & effective for the pets and it's working on my dogs itchy spot already I haven't seen him digging at all since I put it on him.
My point is that as long as the problem isn't harmful to anyone or you didn't get a bad quality product, there is sometimes a way to resolve your problem with a little creativity. FYI, I sent a small newsletter/poll to my current local Customers to get some feedback earlier and I got an overwhelmingly positive response that my Customers would be more than happy to pay up to $15 for a jar of an all natural chemical free safe Whipped Body Butter Product specifically formulated for their dogs and I was even asked about a product for other animals too.. I may be onto something here :) It appears that I am actually going to make profit on this obnoxious smelling batch.

My biggest mistake was to make huge batches. To add to this, not understanding the ingredients well..
I remember thickening my body butter with bees wax.. and the final product tugged along my skin making my skin feel worser.

Water should not be used as a skin moisturizer. Fats are essential for skin hydration. Using water is not necessary. I just moisturize as soon as I get out of the shower. But this is a great video. Very true about the cooking.

If you're moisturizing as soon as you're getting out of the shower, you are moisturizing with water-the water from your shower :) Hydration is defined as "the process of causing something to absorb water." You simply can't have hydration without water. Both oil and water are important for skin health :)

I bought Raw unrefined shea butter to make lip balm for the first time and it smelled awful! The smell is strong and it smells like bad cheese or something .
I thought the best shea butter to use was unrefined or was it because it was raw?
I used like 8 gr of it and 20 gr of cacao butter but the smell of the shea butter took over.
I ones before made lotion bars and used probably unrefined shea butter and cocoa butter it it smelled chocolate like which was what I wanted the lip balm to smell like.

I just started and my first time doing it was small amount, but it turned out so hard I couldnt even press a knive in. Second time was much better, it turned out really great. Im in love with my first made body butter. My boyfriend loved the smell of nuts in it. He said that he would recommend it to his workfriends, who are working in construction. Because he already love it so much that his hands were little softer turn before and that he never experienced this before. So im already exited to do more. Im also a webdesigner and making my webshop already. That is how excited I am about it.
So Thanks, this kind of wisdom really helps me with my process! ❤

I'm so happy I watched this. I'm making an order away from my lab and forgot my tapioca starch. I use tapioca starch to cut the oiliness as well as anchor the fragrance. For mine, I like to use a few ingredients as possible and I whip it multiple times stopping for 10 minutes between to get the max airiness and lightness. Shea, Mango, Coconut oil and liquid oils like avocado, olive and definitely castor. I put the fragrance in the tapioca and add it when I take it from the freezer when only the middle is still liquid.

I don't like the cocobutter scent and not fond of a heavy scented shea butter. To me it smells like olives (which I love... to eat) It is just way too strong. Found this out with my first body butter. The family girls I gave this to for Christmas last year liked that chocolate scent which over powered even the shea. So, good. For me, I added peppermint EO which made it smell like a peppermint patty which was way better. My 2nd batch I did not use cocobutter and I love it!

Which one helps with the slip?

Thx so much! I am still having problems with shea turning grainy in BButter & Lip balm. Sigh. I have chkd my order of shea, its smooth. I have cooled in ice bath & just wondering how I'd know which recipes need which type of cool down? (I wish your book had in depth recipes on bbutter.)

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  Год назад

I'm afraid it varies, and there's no hard rules on what type of cooling is required. I usually start with a light-to-medium trace, and if that doesn't work, I try a heavier trace, chilling in the fridge vs. the counter, etc.-experiment until I get it right.
*Usually* body butters with lots of soft butters and relatively low hardener concentrations are the most likely to go grainy.
      Happy experimenting!

I wish i had found this before i tried my first batch. I used Shea and mango butter , jojoba, grapeseed and coconut oil. Added arrowroot but it was still greasy so i added more. I did whip it but it turned out like refrigerated butter, not fluffy. Sure it melts but I expected it to be softer. So i added more of the oils and now its greasy again. I thought it had gotten hard because i put too much arrowroot powder in it but i dont have any more.

I tried a honey cream and felt it became gready, like with small pieces in it. I tried to warm it up once again, but nope. The oroblem is i used fresh honey and could reheat over 40 degrees. I would loose all the healing power of the product. 😩
