Retinoids are a staple in my day and night routines and I thought I couldn’t use it with Vitamin C. Nice to know it’s not a hard no! Would love to see your routine using both actives
this is crazy, I was literally doing research on vitamin C this week and was just thinking how I was gonna check your channel for some info and then this pops up!! perfect timing!
Hi Michelle, can you do a video on ‘pores’, perhaps their biochemistry, how they work, and common myths surrounding pores on skin, please? Thanks for all the informative content. Keep it up!
Omg I'm so glad this video popped up and debunked the 'ascorbic acid decreases UV protection' myth for me. I'd stopped wearing it under sunscreen but now I'll wear it with gusto!
Thank you for a wonderful video! Very informative! A couple of years ago I heard a dermatologist talk about the ABC of skincare. “A” for vitamin A or tretinoin, “B” for vitamin B or niacinamide, and “C” for vitamin C. The derm basically the “A” was best and most effective for the skin. I use the first two (A and B) and they work wonderfully. I tried for a few years to use vitamin C and it didn’t do anything for my skin. I made sure I used the ascorbic acid version and tried inexpensive to expensive versions, water based and oil based and didn’t see any change. I’ve seen pretty major changes in my skin with using vitamin A. And vit C can be quite expensive. With the vitamin A my insurance covers it. It’s been well worth it for my skin.
It's definitely not necessary for everyone, although I do like it because of the potential long term advantages. I would personally pick a proper retinoid over vitamin C!
Same here. I did a lot of research and chose a pretty pricey Vit C serum, which I used religiously every morning after cleansing, for over 3 months. I saw zero difference in my skin. Been using Retin A for about 5 years now, with excellent results, and figure the other skin care products I use have the antioxidants I need. Won’t be buying any more Vit c serums.
I love hearing you speak! Such a calming voice, demeanor, and accent. And most importantly, I love how you share your knowledge and research. Thank you 😊
Michelle: talking about vitamin c in skincare and going into the usual crazy details that I should be paying attention... Me: that's such a cute Halloween shirt... Where to find 🦇
All these reminded me is that I’m too lazy to chase a worth-it Vitamin C skincare. I’ll keep my sunscreen+tretinoin game (and save some cash😉), thank you very much.
Glad I’m not the only one. Disappointing. Just leave out any mention if you aren’t going to follow through with something or post an update addressing the reasons for not doing so.
I choose retinoid rather than Vitamin C. Retinoid have the best evidence when it comes to reverse sun damage. People love Vitamin C because they can brighten their skin and presumably boost collagen production. But they tend to be on the pricier side. I'm in love with Tretinoin.
Pretty sure you aren't supposed to use any type of retinoid if you're pregnant or planning to get pregnant. Besides, most people use topical vitC specifically to target hyperpigmentation spots, and in some countries tretinoin is prescription-only; lack of accessibility is the biggest reason others turn to other ingredients to do fairly similar effects.
@@quillpen815 hyperpigmentation can be treated by using other ingredients such as arbutin, kojic acid, licorice root, niacinamide, etc. For women who get pregnant, there are other ingredients that can help for anti aging such as Alpha hydroxy acids. 9 month pregnancy without using Retinoid is okay. After they are giving birth, just use it back.
I would love you to make Part 2 of this! Ascorbic acid is not for me, and help to navigate Vitamin C esters (and product recommendations) would be so helpful.
I have been using a collagen powder in a shake about four times a week for 6 months. it has made a huge difference with my nails. I don't have as many ridges and they just look pinker and healthier. So much so I don't even like to wear nail polish over my nails anymore.

I bought the CE Ferulic online directly from Skinceuticals 3 times. The first time it started to discolor after 6 months and I had not finished the bottle. Following your previous posts on Vitamin C I started using it every morning. First using your DIY recipe (it's great for slowly ramping up the concentration), and then I found a local skincare company that produces their ascorbic acid serums every 2 weeks to make sure it arrives fresh. The formula seems pretty generic with ferulic acid, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, and panthenol - but it's 15% at
@@_Hello_4444 Sure the company is BasicLab (based in Poland, as am I), and the serum is called "Serum z witamina C 15%" That being said, the main reason I went with them was because I was concerned how imported vit c serums (for example Paula's Choice, which doesn't have its own store over here) might sit in a cold/hot warehouse for unknown amounts of time - unless I bought it directly from them, in which case I'd know it was a couple days I guess. But with something that perishes relatively quickly, I just didn't want to pay the extra 15 EUR for shipping every 3-4 months. Then again, BasicLab also seem to charge about 15 EUR for shipping across Europe (except Norway and Great Britain), so I feel like you're not much better off ordering from them.
I buy bulk ascorbic acid to dechlorinate water for my fish tanks. But it has other uses! After bathing I dissolve a small amount of vitamin C and niacinamide powder in distilled water, (I use a small wasabi/soy sushi dish to do mixing) add a few drops of lanolin oil for ceramides, vitamin E to stabilize the vitamin C, carrot oil for vitamin A, and 7-12 pumps of Equate brand CeraVe. Stir it until its mixed and has a serum feel to it, and apply it all over my body. It's inexpensive, super fresh and only adds a few minutes to my after bath routine.🌱

I got really enjoy the timeless brand of vitamin c. I got the 20% and next time I’m going for the 10% because the 20% is too harsh for my sensitive skin, plus I use retinoids so it’s even more sensitive. I watch a dermatologist that preaches stronger does Not automatically make the product more effective. How do you feel about this? Also the theory which I find to be true for myself is if you are using a stronger percentage, you are more likely to get irritation which results in you actually using the product less making it less effective. Lower concentration means less irritation and therefore you can use it more often and reap the benefits.
I first heard of colloidal gold in medicine when some students in my high school were doing a project on the use of colloidal gold for concentrating chemotherapy in specific locations of the tumours in cancer
Thank you! My eyebrow pencil went red all of a sudden and I had no idea it was a reaction to the Maelove Glow Maker I'd recently started using. (I'm ditching the brow pencil and keeping the vitamin C).
Using a salicylic acid face wash in the morning before applying vitamin C aids in penetration. Even better, use an acidic toner (I use an AHA/BHA/PHA toner) to further increase penetration. Otherwise, apply it before anything else.

You are brilliant and I love the way you explain the science of it without putting the entire room to sleep (guilty) looking forward to the rest of the videos
5:25 "you have to be really careful otherwise you'll burn your face off" I wish I watched this video before my endevour with vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night. I've been slowly easing my skin into retinol with a low % but I went too confidently into vitamin C at 15% daily for about a week and a half until my skin got stingy and the next morning my skin was dry and tight and even stung with some antiseptic ointment creams but I continued use as I knew they were safe for face and on broken skin and then I moved onto nivea cream in a few days (german version) on top of a thinner moisturiser which has helped soothe the dryness and help the flakes sort of melt off instead of flaking and my skin is finally almost done shedding like a snake a week after I noticed stinging and stopped with the vitamin C and retinol combo. I will ease my skin into it much more gradually now and maybe not use a 15% vitamin C daily, I might find a derivative to use for in between days
Missha also has a vitamin c product that allows you to mix the powder in once it arrives. I just ordered it and I reaaaally hope the scent is as light and citrusy as other people describe it as.
Eucerin has excellent new packaging solution for vitamin C (with powder activation). It doesn't oxidize with easy video instructions as to how to use it without compromising it at all. Using it for months.
Thank you for this video! I love hearing on the chemical level of why and how Vitamin C is good for skin. I use Timeless Vitamin C which you mentioned. Yay!
I always had extremely dry skin and I'm prone to psoriasis, so my go to was the Garnier Aloe Vera serum and Nivea soft, but now that it's summer, it just sits on my face. Good for me, my skin has improved, but I still needed a good skincare so it doesn't get bad again. When I went to the beauty shop today there was nothing but vitamin c products. So I guess it's more the "light weight summer" stuff 😂 I'm eager to find out if it really has all the effects you've mentioned, minus the possible irritation, I'm a bit sensitive to that 😬
I’ve tried sooo many ascorbic acid serums, and usually my skin can’t handle them. I’ve come to realize that the most effective and tolerable of them for me is the Drunk Elephant one. Now that they’ve dealt with the freshness issue of it, i’m more inclined to do a last effort and see if i’ll work as a part of my longterm routine. Had almost given up on vitamin c for me, but it’s such a great ingredient that i just can’t not use it.
A video on how you became a cosmetic chemist would be much appreciated. I’m going to school for chemistry and was wondering how I could become a cosmetic chemist like you
i'm really excited to hear your opinion on Deciem's Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%; that's the most affordable and accessible form of VitC i can get for me
That's The Ordinary one I mentioned in the water-free section! I like it but it's not for everyone. I prefer the Paula's Choice one but TO's is fine as well, just proceed with caution and start with the mixing method.
So I mix TO Vitamin C in Silicone with my Sana Soy Toner before my moisturizer! I think with a lighter formula, it dissolves well and penetrates evenly! Good luck
That was an amazing bomb of information as always Michelle thank you!! But I am kinda irritated that no other company is allowed to create its own vit c serum just because SkinCeuticals has the patent that really works! And it is the only one that really really works... I am refusing to pay so much money for this however... Looking forward to your next videos!
It should expire soon if that's any consolation 😊 But other companies could do clinical tests on their own formulas too to match it! But the financial incentive isn't really there...
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Thank you so much for the reply!! I was wondering if any other antioxidant inredients could ''mimic'' the effect of ascorbic acid?

So far my skin looks a lot brighter and I started incorporating azeliac acid as well. Just need to find a high uva sunscreen, which is kinda hard in the US 🙃.
Yay that's great to hear! If you can't import a sunscreen, maybe check out Bondi Sands! It's approved in Australia so it has better UVA protection than most US sunscreens ^_^
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Hi Michelle I have a query. You have said that the spf differs with the quantity we apply. Does it applies to uva to? For instance overapplying a pa+++ sunscreen can give protection equal to pa++++?
@@linalex3860 Maybe, but it's really difficult to overapply enough - PA+++ to PA++++ is double the protection, you'd need double the normal amount of sunscreen.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Thanks Michelle, here in India pa ++++ sunscreen are pretty heavy. So I apply more and frequently of spf 30 and pa+++(they are very light). I think you might like Indian sunscreens, they mostly use tinosorbs and uvinals for uva and they are very affordable tho.
I might have had a bad experience with Paula’s choice one. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve opened the bottle for about 3 months and products were oxidised. It was super irritating that my eyes and face were swollen for a few days...at the time, I thought it was just allergy or hay fever (but I’ve never had allergy of any kind) and I went back using it and boom...my face was swollen again with impaired skin barrier😵 it took me two weeks to heal. When I googled my symptoms, I also saw a reddit thread saying vitamin c serums could cause corneal erosion if not used properly around the eye area...I NEVER thought of that!
Loved this Michelle, can't wait for part 2. What do you think of mixing The Ordinary's ferulic acid & resveratrol serum with ascorbic powder? I've mixed their pure ascorbic powder (which is the finest vit c powder I've ever used btw- it dissolves in less the 10 secs, more quickly than those from the supplements aisle) with their ferulic acid serum for years now and I also use their alpha arbutin serum with my local Superdrug's (equivalent to Walgreens) own brand tranexamic acid 2.5% serum to help with residual hyperpigmentation. I use the alpha arbutin + Tranexamic acid serum first and follow them up with the vit c + ferulic acid serum after, then moisturiser, then sunscreen everyday. This is the cheapest way I can get really good antioxidants and tyrosinase inhibitors in one without spending tons on one little bottle of premade serum. Hope this helps someone. Love from the UK 🇬🇧
I just got the Ordinary C in Silicone and a bottle of the Ferulic. I "think" you can mix them together. But I've been using the C first then mixing the Ferulic with a Vit E oil right after. Tonight I'll try just mixing with each other.
You can't just add vitamin c powder to oils it's much more complex than that and doesn't keep it stable I researched this on google maybe you should look into it more.
@@nicolerose7639correct. The ferulic/resveratrol serum is oil based and ascorbic acid is water soluble therefore the resultant product will be ineffective
I made the DIY formula of the vitamin C serum and it did burn my face lol also it constantly got contaminated. Preparing skincare in my kitchen was a really bad idea lol. I'll stick to a manufactured product unless I have access to a lab to make my own skincare.
Thank you, exactly what I needed! Used the TheOrdinary Serum you've mentioned so far, but didn’t know I could use it with Niacinamide (which is my holy grail). Yay! Thank you so much on behalf of all the scientists - like me - who have no patience to do youtube videos about these VERY important things.
You are brilliant and I love the way you explain the science of it without putting the entire room to sleep (guilty)
looking forward to the rest of the videos
We need a part 2!
I love the Lab Muffin Matrix!!
Thank you! I feel like it isn't quite complete, I might add packaging to the formula column too... 🤔
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience Oh I like that idea!
I've been using Regimen Labs vitamin x serum which has vitamin c. I've been loving it!
Hi. Have you made part 2 yet? I've hunted for it without success.
Thank you for this video! I love hearing on the chemical level of why and how Vitamin C is good for skin. I use Timeless Vitamin C which you mentioned. Yay!
Thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated your very detailed and relatable info on Vit C. NEW SUBSCRIBER. Thanks much
I always had extremely dry skin and I'm prone to psoriasis, so my go to was the Garnier Aloe Vera serum and Nivea soft, but now that it's summer, it just sits on my face. Good for me, my skin has improved, but I still needed a good skincare so it doesn't get bad again. When I went to the beauty shop today there was nothing but vitamin c products. So I guess it's more the "light weight summer" stuff 😂 I'm eager to find out if it really has all the effects you've mentioned, minus the possible irritation, I'm a bit sensitive to that 😬
Thx for explaining this very important anti-oxidant.
Look into MDAire
A video on how you became a cosmetic chemist would be much appreciated. I’m going to school for chemistry and was wondering how I could become a cosmetic chemist like you
i'm really excited to hear your opinion on Deciem's Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2%; that's the most affordable and accessible form of VitC i can get for me
That's The Ordinary one I mentioned in the water-free section! I like it but it's not for everyone. I prefer the Paula's Choice one but TO's is fine as well, just proceed with caution and start with the mixing method.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience thank you, i mix it with a day cream but maybe i should mix it with a toner/serum so its closer to my skin?
So I mix TO Vitamin C in Silicone with my Sana Soy Toner before my moisturizer! I think with a lighter formula, it dissolves well and penetrates evenly! Good luck
@@aminsou6625 i will try that tomorrow, thank you Amin
Thank you for this helpful guide. Did you ever make part 2? I can't seem to find part 2 anywhere on your channel.
OMG all rounded explanation about vit. C. I owe you, Michelle!
Thank you! ❤️
Omg i have been wondering why the collars of my shirts look like I've been shedding makeup but i haven't been wearing makeup since quarantine started! Thank you so much, I don't feel crazy anymore.
For anyone wondering... I diluted The Ordinary's powder L-ascorbic acid in a liquid form of centella asiatica, and I noticed the tanning product rub off effect about halfway through the powder bottle.
Excellent explanation, so thoughtful and thorough. Thank you, You are a not only a scientist but a teacher as well.
Is part 2 coming soon (I hope)? Love your vids!
Just another comment asking for part 2 💕
Hi Michelle love your channel I was wondering have you ever done a part two on the vitamin c derivatives I feel like I seen the video floating around somewhere but can’t find it
Thank you so much. I finished my current vitamin C + E serum so I've been looking for something else.
I love how smart you are
Hi michelle, love how educational your videos are. Could you please do a video on scarring and products to help with that? Thank you 💕
You're a hoot Michelle! I love your sense of humor! I cant wait for part 2!!!
Cant find Part ll... Help! Love this. Great info :)
Best vitamin C video so far.
I JUST got into vitamin C. Been using the Klairs Drops, and the Rohto CC Melano serum. I did have sensitivity at first, but it went away after about a week.
I have the tatcha vitamin c and it’s decent but I can’t wait to try some of these
Hi Please link part 2 of Vitamin C guide. Thanks
I LITERALLY BEEN WAITING FOR AN UPDATED VITAMIN C GUIDE. I HOPE YOU CAN MAKE SUGGESTION FOR DRUGSTORE/AFFORDABLE VITAMIN C FOR ME AND THOSE PEOPLE WHO CAN'T AFFORD EXPENSIVE BRANDS.
Love this style of informative video on a specific ingredient. Would love the same on peptides
I love the Drunk Elephant Vit.C !💜
Lab Muffin video yeeeesss 🤩🤩!! I've been using vitamin c for a while. It's the diy from one of your videos and I apply it after a glycolic acid face wash (Loreal Paris).
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience
Hi Michelle I have a query.
You have said that the spf differs with the quantity we apply. Does it applies to uva to? For instance overapplying a
pa+++ sunscreen can give protection equal to pa++++?
@@linalex3860 Maybe, but it's really difficult to overapply enough - PA+++ to PA++++ is double the protection, you'd need double the normal amount of sunscreen.
@@LabMuffinBeautyScience
Thanks Michelle, here in India pa ++++ sunscreen are pretty heavy. So I apply more and frequently of spf 30 and
pa+++(they are very light). I think you might like Indian sunscreens, they mostly use tinosorbs and uvinals for uva and they are very affordable tho.
Very informative! When would part 2 be released? Thanks!
Awww the shirt is the cutest!
Great topic and I love the way you try to completely cover the different aspects of it. 👍🏻😄
Thanks again for your time and help
About time, a real chemist
You are amazing at explaining.
It would be great if you would make a video about Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate ♥
Girl. In the UK. Thanks lol.
My self made vit c "serum" oxidates way slower when I add vitamin e and ferulic acid. It's great to see chemistry at work
You can't just add vitamin c powder to oils it's much more complex than that and doesn't keep it stable I researched this on google maybe you should look into it more.
It’s a bit heavy, but I get results and it’s inexpensive. Thought about switching to a different product, but first I'll wait for part 2 of this series.
before I continue watching, I just want to say I love your tshirt!
Thank you! 😊
FINALLY! The video I’ve been waiting for!! 😍😍😍😍 Thank you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for another great video!
I heard that L-Ascorbic Acid serums act like an exfoliator because of their low pH and for this reason they shouldn't be used daily. Is it true?
please make part 2
till waiting for part 2
Very informative! Looking forward to Part II ! Thank you, Michelle !!
Living for the Halloween cat top, Michelle! Thank you for the informative video (per usual)
the real Kween of vitamin C 😩🙏🏼 we love to see it
