    Thank you for a wonderful video! Very informative! A couple of years ago I heard a dermatologist talk about the ABC of skincare. “A” for vitamin A or tretinoin, “B” for vitamin B or niacinamide, and “C” for vitamin C. The derm basically the “A” was best and most effective for the skin. I use the first two (A and B) and they work wonderfully. I tried for a few years to use vitamin C and it didn’t do anything for my skin. I made sure I used the ascorbic acid version and tried inexpensive to expensive versions, water based and oil based and didn’t see any change. I’ve seen pretty major changes in my skin with using vitamin A. And vit C can be quite expensive. With the vitamin A my insurance covers it. It’s been well worth it for my skin.

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  3 года назад +27

      It's definitely not necessary for everyone, although I do like it because of the potential long term advantages. I would personally pick a proper retinoid over vitamin C!

      Same here. I did a lot of research and chose a pretty pricey Vit C serum, which I used religiously every morning after cleansing, for over 3 months. I saw zero difference in my skin. Been using Retin A for about 5 years now, with excellent results, and figure the other skin care products I use have the antioxidants I need. Won’t be buying any more Vit c serums.

      It's a weak, ineffective derivative that is poorly absorbed and doesn't really get into the skin. It has shown to somehow help with acne and likely can act as an antioxidant but don't count on it for anti-aging, collagen-boosting effects, or anything else you'd want from vitamin C. I.e., look for a better version of vitamin C, ideally sticking with stabilized l-ascorbic acid.

      - best practice wrt basic care, eg what damages nails, how to maintain healthy nails (especially when one works with cleaners, or gardens, or as a mechanic, and other hand-intensive work), different types of nails (eg my sibling has mega thick nails - they're almost claws - whereas mine are quite weak)
      - mythbusting, eg do nail strengtheners work, will it damage them to have them constantly painted/covered with acrylics, can you tell if someone's malnourished by the lunula or white patches or cloudiness (a common thing that my mum's naturopath frequently said)
      - how to recover from damage, eg injuries, infections, whether nail beds can recover from a lifetime of chewing (that one is not at all personal >.>)
      there's, uh, a short list for you? lol. it's not your main area of interest, of course, so i'd equally appreciate recs for scientifically-focussed sources. i don't really know enough about it to figure that out for myself and i trust your judgement ^_^

    I choose retinoid rather than Vitamin C. Retinoid have the best evidence when it comes to reverse sun damage. People love Vitamin C because they can brighten their skin and presumably boost collagen production. But they tend to be on the pricier side. I'm in love with Tretinoin.

      Pretty sure you aren't supposed to use any type of retinoid if you're pregnant or planning to get pregnant. Besides, most people use topical vitC specifically to target hyperpigmentation spots, and in some countries tretinoin is prescription-only; lack of accessibility is the biggest reason others turn to other ingredients to do fairly similar effects.

    • @NicePerson58
      @NicePerson58 3 года назад

      @@quillpen815 hyperpigmentation can be treated by using other ingredients such as arbutin, kojic acid, licorice root, niacinamide, etc.
      For women who get pregnant, there are other ingredients that can help for anti aging such as Alpha hydroxy acids. 9 month pregnancy without using Retinoid is okay. After they are giving birth, just use it back.

    I am a bit confused about if Vitamin C and retinoids can be layered.
    Conventional wisdom is that L-ascorbic acid and retinol shouldn't be layered, because they destabilize each other and work at different PHs, making each other less effective. I do sometimes read that more stable derivates can be layered (like retinyl palmitate or granactive retinoid and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or sodium ascorbyl), but that one would not be able to layer, say, tretinoin and L-ascorbic acid.
    I've seen some folks say you CAN layer them, so long as your skin can tolerate them. I've even seen some say that, contrary to popular belief, they don't destabilize each other, but actually stabilize each other. Is this true? I see one study that these folks mostly cite. I've only read thr abstract (I don't think I have enough technical understanding to bother trying to read the actual study), but it seems to be that it was a split-face study that compared a retinol/vitamin C mixture to a placebo, rather than a retinol/vitamin C layering to people using one or the other. Does the fact that the experimental group saw better results than the control group show that these products don't destabilize each other? Or does it only show that, even if the effectiveness of the products are reduced when combined, they still produce SOME results, and certainly better results than just applying a vehicle?
    pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15767769/
    My second question is about layering AHAs or BHAs with L-ascorbic acid. Most websites say this is a no-no, too. But they mostly say it's a no-no because of irritation. How about for the people whose skin can tolerate it, though? Do the products destabilize each other/reduce each other's effectiveness, or are they fine layered?

    I might have had a bad experience with Paula’s choice one. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve opened the bottle for about 3 months and products were oxidised. It was super irritating that my eyes and face were swollen for a few days...at the time, I thought it was just allergy or hay fever (but I’ve never had allergy of any kind) and I went back using it and boom...my face was swollen again with impaired skin barrier😵 it took me two weeks to heal.
    When I googled my symptoms, I also saw a reddit thread saying vitamin c serums could cause corneal erosion if not used properly around the eye area...I NEVER thought of that!

    Awesome video 🤩 Thank you so much! The info provided is as detailed as it could possibly be. I've been using your DIY vitamin C serum for some time now. I've noticed that the formula you propose with baking soda stains my hands, and some time ago I stopped putting baking soda, mixing just ascorbic acid and water. I wonder if this somehow affects the stability or effectiveness 😳

    You mentioned that vitamin C effects can last for around 24 hours. If you use a vitamin C serum and wash your face a few hours later then will the vitamin C still work as an antioxidant after that since it has absorbed into the skin OR will it stop working after that since it has been washed off?
    And will the answer differ with water based/silicone based serums?

    • @LabMuffinBeautyScience
      @LabMuffinBeautyScience  3 года назад +9

      Not sure, I don't think anyone's done a study on the kinetics of ascorbic acid absorption under realistic conditions under that short a time frame yet, or at least not publicly! I would expect that a few hours would be more than enough.

    ugh, struggling with all the conflicting information out there. So many tout the benefits of Vitamin C, and yet it's questioned if it's the Vitamin C itself giving the benefit or if it's the formulation required to stabilize it which comes with its own anti oxidant qualities. It's highly unstable and questionable if it can even get in the skin since manufacturers aren't required to prove their formulation works. Then there's derivatives which hardly have any studies. The theoretical benefits seem so attractive but scientifically I just don't see where the confidence can come from in a cosmetic world.

    Hey, curious if there will be a Part 2 coming out soon? I'd be interested in hearing about the various 'versions' of vitamin c that companies are using claiming it is a vitamin c serum - but not listing ascorbic acid specifically. Cheers :)

    I just made a diy 15% vit c, 1% alpha tocopheral, 1% ferulic acid, 1% glutathione combo serum. I absolutely fcking love it. It's a long way to make the "final" one that's actually good. So many trials and errors. A long journey from just mix vit c powder with water in my hand and pat to my face to using penetration enhancer, emulsifier and some messy stuffs.
    I don't know how long it gonna last outside the fridge before it's too oxidized. But it is actually really cheap compared to those serum out there. Especially in long term.
    I never use Skinceutical, so I can't compare mine to it but mine literally changed my skin in a month and a half.

    I suggest trying the Cosmetic Skin Solutions 15% Supreme CE serum. In addition to ascorbic acid and vitamin E it also contains glutathione and arbutin. It does use alcohol as a penetration enhancer but the asciactic acid and hyalutonic acid are good at mitigating irritation. I have never had this oxidize even at the end of the bottle which for me is 6 months. THis is my favorote of all the many ascorbic acid products I have tried.

    My mother used to make a masc with fresh lemon and the white part of the egg, was letting it penetrate for 10-20 minutes onto her skin. I did this also when I was a teenage. I never had problems from it. It helped my acne. What do you think about that? How effective it would be for collagen production, how deep can the lemon and egg ingredients penetrate the skin?

    The Ordinary C suspension Ha works well because it froms a dermal patch releasing in a time released fashion the Ascorbic acid with the moisture evaporating from your skin no oxidation problems as it is a suspension.Try using after moisturiser and on DRY skin the stinging etc is when it's mixed with another product containing H20 or the skin is still damp

    Hi Michelle 😊, could you do a test of how oxidized vit c (ascorbic acid) work after their dark coloration?. I saw a brand Matteroffact says in their website that they have done tests and even if the serum changes of color, it's still effective. I hope you can see this 🎉
