Ive never seen a vocal coach respond to a rock singer..its always pop..this was so refreshing and informative as someone who loves singing rock.
I would loooove for you to do a best of Amy Lee vocals
I am dying for a coach's opinion on her cause she seems to struggle a lot

I've noticed that too. I'm a metal/punk singer I jump between the two, and people for some reason think that just because sometimes we don't hit dog whistle notes that we can't(oh trust me we can), but the genre we're in favors aggression over clarity.

I agree. I love Amy Lee so much, but a lot of her live performances seem shaky. Like she has a hard time controlling her voice. Course it could be cuz she's much older.

Sam listens to everything and I think that is what is also attractive about him as a teacher. He doesn't judge on what you sing he just listens to how you sing, whatever you sing. Not sure if it is only me but I have no sound on this when Same speaks, only when she sings do I have sound.

i find that a lot of women in rock rely on their lower tone as a stylistic choice (unless it's symphonic bordering operatic) which is why it might be strange that she is "preparing" for a higher note she could take but doesn't.
which i honestly love because pop tends to lean heavily into the higher tones, which are fine, just not the type of sound i enjoy as much. rock rocks

    • @jaernihiltheus7817

What I've heard Taylor's voice described as is "bluesy Joan Jett with triple the range", and honestly I've never been able to find a better description for it.
I don't think she's afraid to hit the higher notes (she does it all the time on the albums, which admittedly isn't saying much considering how well manufactured studio recordings can be), just that she prefers singing in a more comfortable range where she can help it.

Sam, you should check out some of Lzzy Hale's singing, especially if you liked Taylor. Keep checking out the rockers out there as well! Some other rock vocalists that are always on my playlists are Tyler Connoly from Theory of a Deadman, Brent Smith from Shinedown, Miles Kennedy from Alter Bridge.
Some older rock singers as well, especially Ronnie James Dio from Black Sabbath/Rainbow/Dio.

    • @Piotrmiko

I'm so with you on this man, would love to hear the Wembley version of Blackbird from Alter Bridge, or basically anything from Shinedown.

    • @drumlord8772
      @drumlord8772 6 лет назад +2

I think some of the Smith & Meyers acoustic tracks would be sweet as well.
(For those that don't know, Brent Smith and Zach Meyers from Shinedown laid down a bunch of acoustic covers a few years back of some classic songs ranging from Otis Redding to Kenny Wayne Shepherd.)

    • @hitmewithyourvan6662

You mentioned Fry screams a couple of times, I think it'd be REALLY cool if you looked at some heavier metal bands and talked about their techniques and the proper way to scream. Maybe look at bands like Slipknot, Amon Amarth, Bullet For My Valentine, etc. Not only would it be cool and informative, but it could possibly save a metal singer from messing up their voice.

Taylor Momson! I didn't know I wanted this video until I saw it... Thanks! I've wondered about her singing before, if it was safe/healthy the way she does the "screams" and such. This was very interesting.
I don't think she goes high often because it's not really the sound or vibe/type of music she's looking for. I'm trying to think of songs in which she does. Under the Water maybe? I can't tell notes apart so I've no idea what's above the range spoken of in the video.

It might be a little out of your comfort zone, but I would LOVE to hear your analysis of Devin Townsend. He's a metal singer, and he does scream (heavy vocal fry over lighter voice), but he can get some POWER in his sung notes. Kingdom is a good song to hear this. He explains it as "getting his power from the ground" when he's sliding up to those notes.

I'm sure you've heard her sing before this if you saw Jim Carey's version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, she was Cindy Lu Who.
