    This is the BEST explanation I've ever heard with respect to singing! This is the most accurate educational lesson on breathing. It's so much easier to understand than, "Don't sing from your throat. Sing from your stomach."

    This 100%! I spend a lot of time with students explaining this very thing. Our vocal folds are like strings on a guitar - but instead of a finger vibrating them, the air does. And each frequencey (note) of vibration needs a certain amount of pressure to vibrate freely. The diaphragm is the nozzle, if it doesn't do its job, the throat will be the emergency dam and mess with our sound and be uncomfortable.

    • @KClayMusic

    What helps me is that I stop imagining producing the pitch with my throat. Instead, I imagine producing the pitch with my tummy.
    Also, if you, like me, are a beginner singer, but experienced in piano, you are likely to "play the piano" on your vocal chords. What helped me here is to imagine the phrase as a single note moving sideways (instead of upwards and downwards).
    This video is incredible. Keep up the good work!

    It's something that feels natural to me because I started to learn how to sing when I was very young, but it just helps to visualize the power coming from your core.
    I think a lot of people get confused on how to sing because they're trying to mimic the way that pop stars sound, which kind of disguises the power of their voice as a heady, talking voice. Some examples that come to mind are Justin Bieber, or Brittany Spears. But that's like watching a magician and thinking magic is real. Those songs are produced in a way to feature that as a stylistic choice and you can't just pick up any tune and sing it that way, so it's not helpful to lean on that style as a technique.
    I guess what I'm trying to say is, singers should learn the basics before they lean into any particular style. Learn how to do it the classic way, and let the style be an organic manifestation of your voice. Singing from your core is just the essential thing to learn before anything else. Projecting your voice is the essence of singing.

    Watched this vid a few days ago and I realize that I got it. Not singing from ny throat anymore.
    The garden hose example did this for me. Simply NOT reducing and thereby controlling the air in the throat, instead I use mystomach muscle to controll the airflow while relaxing the throat intentionally. It's that simple.
    Instantly got better and I also realized why some songs where just working better than others. I was just relaxed because of the song I felt very comfortable with...
    Thank you so much.

    I would guess this is part of my problem. I also think of this analogy for ergonomic lifting. They say don't just lift something with your arms and back. Use your legs to take pressure off your back. I know when I sing I am only using about 40% of what I am supposed to. Meaning I am not using nasal passages, throat, diaphragm, etc to their fullest ability. Karen, I am still trying to absorb all your wonderful information. Thanks!

      Nice to have your perspective this evening. My ear training occurred naturally as I sang with my parents in church. And as a kid I learned by ear always walked around the house singing along with radio and my ability to sing on pitch became very sharp ( also learned the drums by ear and then formed a group) My forte was soul music I didn't pursue voice lessons until much later. Now understanding that appoggio in absolutely essential sing the repertoire I love to perform. Jams with a fat sound and higher compass. OK, young lady I will stop now@@KClayMusic

    Hold your nose sing into towel, one it keeps the neighbours happy, but most importantly it teaches you to sing and project from the diaphragm, and a towel muffle helps you tune your ear as it slightly projects back to you, as to hear yourself more so....To strengthen a diaphragm an 02 trainer is far far better than any traditional methods, look it up..To much air is not a problem, it's how you manage it, rather than not enough air...

    • @KClayMusic

      Too much air can be a huge problem, especially if you want power in the high range! Its tough to bring our high note vocal folds (that are thin) together over emense airflow!

    Wow, a constriction in a pipe will reduce the pressure energy of the fluid going through it, and increase the kinetic energy, it will flow faster with less pressure, the gas having to go though a narrowing at the same litres per min will speed up , increasing kinetic energy but decreasing pressure energy. Any ways that what they taught me but I am sure you are right about singing. If you dont believe me hold 2 A4 pieces of paper by the short side with the long sides dangling down and very close together. Blow in between them to blow them apart. You won't do it, theyll move close together. Venturi effect. I still liked and subscribed.

    • @KClayMusic
      @KClayMusic  9 месяцев назад +2

      This is really cool. In singing, we call the minimum pressure of air needed for the vocal folds to vibrate PTP. (Phonation threshold pressure). So if you went producing that pressure, you won’t be able to make noise. It changes at each pitch as the vocal folds are a muscle and change shape and size to make different pitches.
      There is a category of vocal exercises called SOVT (semi-occluded vocal tract) exercises. They include a blockage of the vocal tract usually at the oral level, which creates back pressure. The back pressure helps the vocal folds function easier as they balance out the extra pressure singers usually apply from below the folds.
      The alignments between the two are awesome!

    I don't get the purpose of the hold portion of the box breathing exercise. Why don't we just inhale/exhale for a certain count? What's the purpose of the hold part?

    • @KClayMusic
      @KClayMusic  10 дней назад +1

      holding on empty is actually really tough, and it causes your diaphragm to fire a lot harder. Great for people who arnt using that muscle to its full extent. (picture pulling someone who is drowning out of the ocean- their first breath is going to be a big one becuase the diaphragm fires hard)
      Also, when you hold it is forcing you to control your breath even if your body feels like panting. this is a huge part of breath control. controling the size of your inahle and the pace of your exhale even when you feel out of breath.like panting

    Indian singers often sing with their throats, while they are sitting cross legged on the floor, and they sound incredible. They are trained from an early age to sing this way. Examples: Arijit Singh, and Shreya Goshal.

    • @KClayMusic
      @KClayMusic  Месяц назад +2

      Yes this is a different thing. I am talking about tension- and this type of singing your mentioning is more about place of resonance. They would still want to be mindful of having external tension in the neck

      @@KClayMusic Understand that these singing techniques have been developed and implemented over millennia (first written about in ancient texts called the Sama Veda, but existed thousand of years earlier). Yogic, and devotional principles were applied and practiced to foster relaxed, and flexible vocalisation, with the aim of achieving connection with the spiritual. These techniques would be impossible for most Western singers to emulate, imitate, or achieve, without decades of dedicated training, under highly skilled gurus. Hindustani, and Carnatic singing discipline, has little or nothing in common with Western singing technique.

    If you want to stop singing from your throat learn to properly put your vocal folds together without squeezing them, then learn to sing in that mode very quiet, as quiet as possible. Vocal folds not squeezed but not opened. Singing with opened vocal folds will result in a whispery sound with too much air. Singing with squeezed vocal folds will result in too much tension, vocal injury and pain. In proper singing vocal folds must be put together even before the airflow, so the air would not leak through them, but the pressure to put them together should be as minimal as it needs to be, so that any amount of air would go through them when you exhale. Even lightest breezes of air. That's why you should practice very light singing as well. Because if you have only practice loud singing and big amount of air, you learn yourself to squeeze the vocal folds to contradict that amount of air and then when you want to sing lighter your vocal folds squeeze too much.

    I used to be able to sing smoothly, til I started to belt high notes. Now, I am more pitchy, some notes get choppy, especially last note in a line. It feels as if not enough air and throat feels tight. I try to relax and sing but still can't. On a good day, the condition is better but mostly not. Is this a throat problem? Singing into the high range is all about ditching tension, and reducing air pressure. (Try stretching and moving around- swaying etc- when you sing. Also, pull back on volume without losing the “chest voice” qualities. The more relaxed you can be the better.
