@Shir Levi Thank you for sharing this information! I'm just becoming aware that I have this trait as an adult. Do u think this is only genetic or can it be developed as a result of childhood trauma? I was the scape-goat child growing up in an abusive family. I wonder if trauma/environment can exacerbate being an highly sensitive adult?

When you are highly sensitive you also know immediately if a person dislikes you or is a negative person. They might not have a reason, but it can cause anxiety being around them...crowds with lots of these people are draining.

^ The problem is that those people can dislike me too (basically ignore their own philosophies). It's often also because of my erratic nature. The worst and most nonsensical part is that it's usually bigots that treat me nicely, ugh :/ But I agree, most have that calm aura where you know they'll never harm or look down on you

I’m very shy and I hate being around huge crowds of people it makes me very nervous . I am just aware of my surroundings & I’m very empathetic I can feel for others and sometimes it becomes overwhelming .So I’m learning to really take care of myself and have alone time . I did the quiz and had a score of 25. As a guy it's tough to be highly sensitive, simply because I can't and won't live up to the image of what a man should be in our society. I cry a lot, I care way too much about things I can't controll and I have such a vivid imagination that it sometimes makes me loose touch with reality. I see auras around people most of the times, I see shadows in the dark that move around and sometimes I get lost in feelings/emotions of other people. It is tough, but it's a gift that I try to use as well.

Bro! I have the same thing. I suffer from anxiety and depression. Ive had to learn to except myself. Amd at most its a great thing sometimes. But its hard for me to eat at a restaurant or go to the mall or amusement park. Because i read everyones emotions. And im very sensitive to the crazy environments to the point i want to be secluded in my own room. But what frustrates me the most is when i cant explain it good enough to others that dont have this. So others tend to get mad at me or irritated. Because i can become angry or irritated fast. And i get twitchy and sometimes sweaty. Its an insane feeling. I hate it when it becomes out of control but love it when i can control it. Im prescribed xanax to help me calm down from the fast paced world. Im 31 and am still trying to figure out how to deal with it. And control the urges to not become so easily irritated or angry. And such simple things like the lights are to bright or theres loud or annoying noises or alot of people talking at once can set it off. Im glad im not the only one with this. We can all learn from eachother.

Shir Levi Throughout my life people around me have been attacking me for being too sensitive. And as result I have developed depression as only 14 old girl.
Now I am adult and ok with just being with myself. It is the pressure of society that we all should be social and extroverted. But without introverts world woud fall apart because introverts are the ones who make change because they have genial idea.
Anyway,it still huts when people are cruel to me. I do not know if this is something that I as a hyper sensitive person can overcome as it is in my nature that everything matters to me so much.....

Yes! I wish more people (or I should say more of my friends and family) understand this. I always wondered why I often felt overwhelmed and drained when I go to crowded places even if it's just minutes within entering a shopping centre, I thought it was my vision/sensitivity to bright lights and for a while, I even assumed it was my lack of iron that made me feel that way. It made me feel like I wasn't really present, like I was being pulled in so many different directions. Too many times, I've been called a hermit/anti social because I didn't want to go to a social event.. but at the same time, I still want to be invited and not forgotten. I've struggled with my personality my whole life, feeling like a misfit and unable to connect with others but now I feel so much more at peace, happy and living in the present -this is mainly due to working on myself for more than 10 years (learning how to appear normal, communicate with others etc) and because I now have a beautiful, happy baby girl who keeps me centred :) I've also learned how to cut out the toxic people in my life.. but I am still a work in progress and always will be. Love your channel so much, you are truly a beautiful and unique soul. You are the kind of friend I look for, I wish there were more like you. My test score is 26 but I already knew that I'm highly sensitive. Sending you love from Australia 💕

I got a 25 on the quiz. And I cried during the whole first half of this video. I'm 30 years old, and have always known that I"m highly sensitive, but I didn't know it was a real thing, if that makes sense. I feel validated, and hopeful that I can learn techniques to help me cope. Seeing how accepting you are of yourself makes me feel like it's okay to accept the things about myself which I see as weak. I already do some of the things you mentioned, but I am very much looking forward to reading the book. And I could really relate to what you said about being so in touch with your emotions that you can help others to understand and feel theirs--I try to do the same thing with my music. I'm sixteen years old and have been labeled as 'sensitive' my whole life. I have had many downs in this small amount of time. Being called a crybaby because I cried easily. People telling me I get to influenced by other people and how they feel. I have always considered myself a people pleaser. I think they didn't really notice that I was a highly sensitive person because I'm everything but shy. I'm what they call a HSS, a high sensation seeker. They figured it out when I went to an acupucturist, who told me that she could feel my emotions running through my body like an open book. Sound very poetic, doesn't it? Being a sensitive person also made me respond very easily to treatments and antibiotics. Although sometimes still thinking it is a trait that doesn't always help me, it feels amazing to get to know yourself better. It feels amazing to know why you respond the way you do. Why I cry more than my classmates. Why someone who walks past me, can change my whole day. my whole mood. Being a HSP may not be the easiest thing in the world. But it does make me feel gifted even if not everyone can see it. :)

You might be straight up empath rather just than HSP. They're very similar, we share traits and you can be both, but empaths also tend to be more energy-driven and intuitive vs mainly triggered by sensitivity to stimulation or a sensitive nervous system. Empaths may strongly sense their environment, often sense people's (or even sometimes an animal's) emotional or physical symptoms, and we tend to absorb it.

Jessica Lynn Same here, you're not alone! Sometimes people don't understand what the big deal is. I used to envy those who can get away with not sleeping enough consistently, but now I just accept it and make sleep a priority...

    • @miaramer
      @miaramer 8 лет назад +7

Ana That's also exactly how I feel if I don't get my sleep, and I also need a lot of hours of it. For some reason our society values skipping sleep to "get more things done", but for some people that's very counterproductive!

This was brilliant. I've always been empathetic to the point where it's beaten me down by trying to help the wrong people or believing that I should be a slave to others and never put myself first. I scored 24 on that test and I'm totally going to read the book.
    Thank-you for making this 💕

I'm so glad I watched your video, I had never heard of highly sensitive people before! I scored a 25. I had always thought I had some kind of learning deficincy or something, I can not listen to music or talking and do anything else. My friends in high school would listed to music when they did their homework but I had to have total silence, even then I was easily distracted. I get easily distracted or annoyed by light, sound and temperature. I jokingly tell people that I have dog ears because I seem to hear things no one else can. I can not be in large crowds of people, especially if it's very sunny and warm, I can have a panic attack or get angry from being over stimulated. I'm also very empathetic to others especially animals, and often am plagued by sad, horrible or depressing repeated thoughts. I am happiest when I am alone with my animals

oh yes. finally I realized my empathy was a strength. Here is an example: I started volunteering at the pet center where I used to cry whenever I went in the store. Now I am helping those cats and only sometimes I cry. Mostly it's a glorious gift working with others who care deeply to save many animals each week month and year. I also became a pet sitter in my spare time to give more love and found I was monetarily compensated in return as well. A good energy exchange.

I found out that I actually am highly sensitive I even looked up positive quotes about Oversensitivity and made them into posters to hang on my wall. Most of my friends know about this and they try to comfort me at all times as best as they can. I am not sensitive to sounds or lighting so much but I am really sensitive to words and action. Anyway, if you read this, I really encourage you to just keep on going with your life because being highly sensitive is a wonderful gift. Thank you.

Kim, I'm the same about the high, uncomfortable levels of energy. I thought I was claustrophobic for awhile (maybe I am lol). My grounding for this is getting in nature, somewhere with wide open spaces. The only place I can fully get rid of the edge and can tune into different frequencies, re-energize. Weird but true!

I've been an HSP ever since I can remember! Took a long time for me to realize that most people around me didn't see the world as I experience it. I grew up thinking I was somehow inferior... But I pretty much accept it now. I've come to view being HSP as mostly positive. It helps with my writing, for one thing. And for creativity, in general. Very important, if it's possible, to share with important people in my life, I've found. Thanks for posting this.

This has truly been an eye opener. Thank you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thank you Shir! I discovered this book almost twenty years ago when I was teaching in Portugal. It was so eye-opening to discover that I am a highly sensitive person and a handful of my students were as well. I have recommended this book so much over the years and am deeply grateful for you sharing your personal experience. My biggest challenge now is how to best care for myself in the highly public and social life I experience on a daily basis. How to find that alone time, to stay healthy and to create healthy boundaries without being defensive. I am highly sensitive and compassionate but after too much of my boundaries being pushed and too much stimuli, I get fed up! I welcome the anger and even rage, for I know it is giving me energy, motivation to continue to move forward to create a life that is more conducive to the highly sensitive being I am. Many Blessings.

This video gave me so much anxiety. I am going on a trip this summer with two of my friends for 10 days. It's totally out of my comfort zone, because we are road tripping and spending all his time together, and I am really stressed out. I'm also kind of excited about this because it's something I never did and I want to see beautiful places and have new experiences and go out of my comfort zone. I'm also going to a festival and because of the video you showed I really thought 'oh no'. Because I know I won't be able to retrieve there. We're sleeping in a tent (only for two nights), but it means we're gonna get up and close and not able to be alone. I'm also glad I saw this video because now I realize I have something to reflect and work on. I'm meeting up with my friends tomorrow to plan the trip and I think I am going to say something about it. I wish I could be happy about the beautiful trip I am going to make, but no, here I am stressing out about being up close with two people for 10 days. Goddangit

First comment on RUclips! After seeing this I had to write some words of love and support and also share a little of my experience. I am highly sensitive as well, scoring 24 on the test. While I don't feel particularly shy, and most people agree that I come off as outgoing, I am very picky about who I spend time with and who I want in my life. I'm very sensitive to negativity and people's intentions. I cry easily, especially when I'm overwhelmed and have to do more than a few major tasks in a day. I also struggle with motivation if the task is not in line with my core values (sometimes struggle working for big companies). I never thought of myself as having few friends until I just sat and thought about it. I spend a lot of time alone and need it to interact with the world. I go through periods where I get very upset and sad at the world, society and what we've done to the beautiful Earth. I find myself being an incredibly loving and understanding person, but at the same time dealing with a lot of anger towards humanity (similar to a commenter b leria below). I've found spirituality is a great way to deal with these sometimes overwhelming emotions and helps me make peace with the world. Something I also feel, that I have not seen in the comment section or in the video, is a sensitivity to food. My body is so sensitive that I have to eat vegan, unprocessed food. Any complicated dish or food that seems to have negative energy effects my digestion and mood almost immediately! Anyone else here like that? Amazing video! I LOVE your energy!

My score is 24. I always feel that I'm a loner and something is wrong with me. My parents used to say that I'm a hyper sensitive people. I try very hard to be 'normal' like other people but sadly its just not me... if i do it, its just me faking it.
That was so tiring. I also can feel negative vibes and being with negative people makes me sick, stress and depress. I can read people effectively just by seeing their gesture and facial expression even if its a stranger. I also very sensitive to bright sun light (always curtain down in the mid morning) and loud TV. I always mute my TV during commercial break. I dont know why. But its bother me and make me cant concentrate to other things like talking, or reading. I love animal... cause their love is unconditional love. Love to help people but hate to be around argumentative and negative person... Glad to know that im not alone having this personality... Love myself but sometime hate it when most people can't understand me

Thanks so much for this! I scored 100% on the quiz a while back. Discovering I was a HSP made so much sense of my entire life! It explained my strong sensitivities to bright light, to sound (misophonia included), to smell (I can smell pasta when it is al dente from 2 rooms away), to texture. I feel like my senses have been in overdrive my whole life. Not only that, I pick up on everyone's intentions and energies, and a room full of hostile energy will send me into a panic and force me to leave. I am always exhausted. I work from home with 2 small children and barely have time to myself. When they sleep however, I love retreating to my bedroom for quiet time. Funny part of it all is that I am an extrovert (ENFJ). It would be so amazing to meet fellow HSPs like me!

Omggg, the "very much affected by the condition of your body" thing !!! I've been seing the sensitivity part of it as a blessing since I've red tha "Anne of Green Gables" novels (if you value imagination and sensitivity you HAVE to read them, even if you're not an hsp). But this body thing, I've always seen it as a weakness. I can't do ANYTHING properly if I'm hungry or sleepy or tired or thirsty or rally need to pee... And my physical well being is very much affected by what I eat and by exercise. My life simply doesn't work If I don't exercise (I can't listen to my own thoughts, can't sleep...). I simply CAN'T deal with overwhelming situations if I'm tired, and I've always felt so weak because of it. Thank you so much for letting me know it's just a part of who I am (:

Highly sensitive people are strongly advised to avoid electromagnetic frequencies from wireless, power lines and house wiring. Using ethernet instead of Wifi, airplane mode your phone as much as possible, and most importantly, turn off the circuit breaker to your bedroom at night. These steps (and others) will help so much!

Wow, I will try and do this! Thank you for these tips! I was always one to keep my phone away from me during the night. I know many of us sleep with our phones under our pillows or next to us on the side table drawers. Now it is time that I go back to this!

The Simple Life it's okay to have your phone near your bed while you are sleeping as long as it's in airplane mode (make sure 3G/4G/Wifi/bluetooth are all off). That way you can still use it for an alarm, listen to music, read an ebook, etc. But if you need to leave it on (like if you're a doctor or EMT on call), distance will help, as well as leaving it in a place where it has the most bars (fewer bars means the phone boosts its power).

i scored 15, I am diagnosed with depression and i might also have BPD, noise always sets me off. i hate it so much but i love music. also a messy room annoys me although i used to never be a tidy person when i was younger. minimalism helps. but i havent fond a solution for outside noise other than noise cancelling headphones. btw youre so beautiful.

I feel relieved! I always thought there was something wrong with me. I'm highly sensitive, partially due to the tough situation my mom went through while pregnant. As a child I would wake up feeling sad for homeless dogs, cried all day remembering a sad song and felt nostalgic over a toy I had stopped playing with. I would observe the kids around me and think: "they're normal. I'm ridiculously sensitive". Unfortunately, teachers reinforced this idea. As a teenager I suffered a lot every time I got heartbroken, and as an adult I feel a lot more confident with myself (yoga was the key factor to achieve this), but I cant help being extremely empathetic. I haven't reached the point yet in which I feel the advantages of it. I'm currently teaching Spanish in primary school and feel EXHAUSTED after all the noise and pressure on me. Definitely not staying! I put on my headphones and travel through music to escape reality. I just want a quiet cubicle. And staying at home all weekend long.

I just recently discovered that I’m highly sensitive and this is a great video. Recently I’ve noticed I’ll cry but idk why I am crying. I literally can’t find a reason. Also if I have some work to do the weather or my environment will decide whether I get my work done that day or not. If it’s raining and or gloomy outside. I will not get work done. If I’m in my house I can’t get my work done. If the cafe or library is too cold or loud I can’t get my work done. If the weather is not perfect I will not go outside for a workout.

I had no idea about HSP. But it describes my life experience perfectly, from high sensitivity to noise, smells, textures, to anxiety and depression, to being very empathetic and intuitive. I wonder if all INFJs are also HSP? (I took the test and got a 26). Thank you Shir!

Angela Fernandez Yeah this very hard. I was in a bad situation living with my mother in law who would complain to my husband everyday about all the things he did wrong. It hurt me so much, that broken relationship between them. So I broke down crying and my MIL was like: Wow you are really sensitive (after almost a year of that stress...I don't think you even have to be HSP for that). But it is hard to deal with those people that have 'hardened'/'toughened up' by life, as my MIL is. Some bad things happened to her. And even though my own life hasn't always been easy (whose has?). I try to stay open minded and try to understand myself and the people around me better. But yeah I understand it is a struggle, when people tell you that you are 'too sensitive'...They just don't understand...

I took the test and got a 14. We have diagnosed our son as a sensitive person. It has been a struggle to inform people of what a sensitive person is. We didn't know where my son got the sensitive gene and now I feel it maybe me. Thanks for your support and explanation. We want the best for our son and want to protect him from the negative outside world as possible.

I scored 24.Thankyou for posting on RUclips. I always knew something was wrong with me as I'm always stressed and became sensitive if people yelled at me or gave me a hard time.
Being a HSP is a gift.My intuition is always 100% on.I can spot a lier a mile off.And I also think being empathic is a good quality.

yeah, i wear earplugs whenever i leave my room because there are just too many painfully loud sounds around, when i take a shower, when i'm in the kitchen with clanging dishes, around musical instruments, when i'm around roads with cars driving by, when the vacuum is running, any other loud appliance, etc., and i always keep earplugs with me wherever i go when i leave the house

I thought that a few of the questions were a little too broad though. For example, I don't think I know anyone who doesn't get into a bad mood or stop concentrating when they're really hungry. Hahah it's natural for a living being because food is a physiological need, so it's more important than any other need!

on the flip side dealing with someone who is highly sensitive is draining. When ever im around people who highly sensitive, i always feel like im walking on egg shells. Its like i have to tip toe around them to not accidentally set up an emotional eruption from that individual.
Then when I try to explain my perspective on things im met with snarky responses like "You're just an asshole." or "you should try being more considerate."
Most of the time i get annoyed and cut them out of my life.

    • @MegaLoler9000
      @MegaLoler9000 6 лет назад +23

this is a huge reason why i have a hard time accepting my own self, being so sensitive, because i can understand what it's like on the other side, and often do my best to hide my sensitivities because i can't stand the idea of upsetting anybody, but in the end all that really ends up happening is i retreat and hide away forever because my sensitivities just can't be avoided, i just can't "get over" it, as much as i'd like to just for the sake of the people the relationships with whom i care about

This is actually true. I recently had a falling out with a friend over something that seems small to me, but is a huge issue for him. I just apologized prefusely and tried to understand his situation, but he just wants to take a break from us. I have felt so guilty and talked with others about it who made me realize that he is not being reasonable. It's hard though.. I love him but I also feel like you shouldn't have to tip toe around your friends.

I'm late but it seems like you were dealing with a narcissist rather than a HSP. I don't think HSP will ever be as daring to say such things to your face. Narcissists usually tend to guilt trip like that.

I saw your eyes and recognized the highly sensitive in you. Small details like recognizing another HSP by their eyes is a gift. I am a HSP and know the struggles well. I found support through a therapist to learn how to live a full happy HSP life. Thanks for sharing it's hard to find encouraging help out there.

I had to check almost every box, except the one with the caffeine, because I don't really know it. Already did another test like one year ago where you could reach about 135 points and I reached 129. It's so hard for me to deal with it... I'm like constantly exhausted, people empty me and my anxiety makes it so hard to stand everyday life... plus my self-esteem is like non-existing, I can't even look people in they eyes when they talk to me. And nobody understands me, I'm just the weird girl that doesn't have any friends, just sitting in her room, doing nothing. I even broke up with my boyfriend because I hate myself so much and I started feeling so uncomfortable around him... it feels like it's never going to end. It just won't pass... :(

mhm! i'm so afraid of interacting with people, actually talking to people and being myself, because as soon as i expose myself in any way, i feel extreme anxiety and regret, fearing every little detail about what they might be thinking of me, feeling like i'm a huge mess up, i tremble and feel traumatized when i have to speak up about anything remotely personal, it can be crippling, i can't even feel comfortable around my own family, i'm always in my room just blocking everyone out because it's the only way i feel i can be okay enough
i'm just a blank person who smiles and doesn't say anything when i have to be around other people, i avoid as much as possible having to engage with anybody
i feel totally trapped and hopeless about it, watching my life go by with all the people i care about and want to enjoy life with living their lives distant from me, because i feel physically incapable of letting them in

I believe the difference is mainly in the degree it affects you. Being highly sensitive can be hard in social situations, but it is not paralyzing. It takes a lot of energy sometime yes, but you do not shut down. Anxiety on the other hand can completely run your life and make social situations simply impossible.

I am a highly sensitive person. I always loved people and animals and nature and art... and I most definitely was not prepared facing the cruelty of the animal industry. (a colleague recommended me to watch a documentary) Ultimately I am extremely glad I did watch it (even if it was hard), as I could stop assisting to torture and killing, and I became vegan (which for me finally meant, I live in complete harmony with my own values... Compassion and empathy, with no exception... selfless without speciesism). Ever since I have to take care of myself with care (which I never really focused before) and educate myself to deal with people more efficiently. I am so glad that now I can make a good use of my sensitivity. As a construction architect I had a great sense for details and project management, so I decided to combine everything and I became an entrepreneur financing and starting environmental and pro-vegan startups as well as an activist.

Wow, I always thought I was really different from everyone else and hated myself for not being able to cope with the stress/high paced life/stimulus etc. Knowing 15% of the population experiences many things that I always thought were weird is crazy! I’m so excited to read all about this now as I finally feel like I’ve found the reason I’m different.

Since becoming a mother, it is harder and harder to get my alone time and I feel guilty sometimes that I cannot....I can't though.... Thanks you so much for these videos. At 38 I am just barely coming to terms with being a male HSP and all that entails. It breaks my heart when I realize that there are probably so many other people and especially males that live lives of quiet desperation never admitting or coming to terms with their sensitivity. Your video is so easy to watch and I can stare for miles into your beautiful eyes. They are spectacular!!
