    I'm HSP and as a man, its even harder. I cry/get angry etc easily. After work, my emotion and mind would be drained. The slightest annoyance in my boss' voice would be enough to ruin my day. Luckily my wife understood HSPs (she is a psychologist). Thank you so much for the video 😊

    • @DrMaikaSteinborn
      @DrMaikaSteinborn  Год назад +4

      Oh yeah, I can imagine it's a lot harder as a man. The societal expectation is for men to be almost free of sensitivity and emotion, which is incredibly unhelpful. I'm glad you found someone who understands this and what it means to be an HSP and who supports you! Sensitivity is not a weakness, it's a strength, it just goes along with different personal boundaries.

    I prefer to call it a highly aware person . Most people are asleep almost dumb and unaware of life. It’s the world that is out of balance with all the unnecessary noise and information crammed into our brains,uninvited. it’s us aware folk that have to analyze it all to help those that are unaware. ❤

      Glad you found sth. new to try out! Lots of success with this. It may work to different degrees with different triggers/stimuli/situations, but it's definitely an important strategy. I used to get really overstimulated speaking in front of groups. As a teenager I even fainted in front of the whole class once. Since then, I've become so used to it, I genuinely enjoy it and don't feel overstimulated anymore.

      Hi! I'm glad you liked the video. I'd love to have subtitles for all languages, but they need to be added manually/specifically for each language. So I unfortunately can't just turn them on, someone who speaks that language would need to write them in.

  • @auntiebobbolink
    @auntiebobbolink 2 года назад +5

    All your suggestions are fine and I've known this about myself for years.
    However, there's a huge problem that nobody seems to want to address. Simply put, poor people aren't able to do a lot of those things. As for unhoused people, under constant surveillance by those who purport to be "helping" with absolutely no awareness of the damage they cause with their demands and insensitivity! This is not being addressed at all.
    The first book I found many years ago, "Sensitivity, The Agony And The Ecstasy" was written by a psychologist who said he recognized the majority of his patients were very sensitive and decried "the dirth of literature" on the subject. I would not be at all surprised if the majority of unhoused people are highly sensitive, yet, as I said, it isn't addressed
    For me, your words are more important for those claiming to help, rather than for me personally.
    Please take this seriously, acknowledge the harm being done to poor people, and gather others to speak out about this
    Thank you!

    • @DrMaikaSteinborn
      @DrMaikaSteinborn  2 года назад +1

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! I agree, there are a lot of self-leadership sklls that are harder or not possible to do when someone is poor and/or unhoused and most countries could do a better job at supporting everyone who is in such a situation.

      Yes! They are different and can be mistaken for one another. Also, they can both occur at the same time. One of the main difference is in how HSPs and people with a spectrum disorder experience social situations. There are also differences in brain activity, like how the brain processes emotions.

    Is there a difference from being a highly sensitive person and being an empath?

    • @DrMaikaSteinborn
      @DrMaikaSteinborn  2 года назад +4

      I haven’t seen any specific research on this question. The understanding that is most common at the moment as I gather is: Yes, there is a difference. Someone can be highly sensitive, but not an empath, but an empath is always highly sensitive (so above-average empathic ability is seen as a possible but not necessary domain/manifestation of sensitivity).

    I wonder what the cause of this is or how it is linked to mental health. It's caused a great deal of stress for me and it gets worse as my mental health gets worse

    • @DrMaikaSteinborn
      @DrMaikaSteinborn  2 года назад +3

      I'm sorry to hear this is becoming more and more of a burden to you.
      There are lots and lots of different kinds of sensitivities and with that also different kinds of causes. Sometimes it's more physical, like certain physicall illnesses can make a person more sensitive, but past experiences, trauma or mental illnesses can also make a person more sensitive. And sometimes it's a sensitivity a person is born with as discussed when psychology talks about a "highly sensitive person". Any of these causes can feel very similar... So it's always important to get to the bottom of one's sensitivity: where is it coming from, when did it start and is there anything that could or needs to be taken care of (and under the guidance of which health professionals) so it doesn't become a burden to a person's health.
      The studies I've come across regarding the connection between being an HSP and mental health are finding that when someone is highly sensitive, it's even more important for them than for others to learn and apply the kind of skills discussed in this video. When a person gets good at managing their sensitivity, it can even make them stronger in the long run.

      @@DrMaikaSteinborn Thank you for taking the time to write this! It's certainly something I was born with, as far back as I can remember loud or unpleasant sounds distressed me, and my sense of touch could (and still can) become very keen. I was also diagnosed with GAD at age 13 and have gone through multiple long depressions. Trauma seems to have a bit of an influence as to what sounds will distress me but when anxiety/depression is worse it makes the hyper focusing much worse. I also started dissociating a lot which I attribute mostly to my mental health but certainly is also linked to sensitivity. If I endure physical pain like a bad fall or something as well it hikes the sensitivity through the roof. You mentioned it could become a strength and I've certainly found this to be true; I've been a musician since I was 5 and plan to pursue it as my career now and my sensitive hearing has enhanced (if not caused) my talents in so many ways

    • @DrMaikaSteinborn

      People can be born with a higher sensitivity, and it can come from experiences (also trauma) and the way we deal with life (for example, if we keep avoiding challenges and facing our fears, we'll become more and more anxious about/sensitive to challenges).
