From Med School to Life Support, When My World Shattered

  • There is one date on the calendar which forever changed my life. It is October 10. Every year, I try to ignore the day, but its significance is etched in my mind. The anniversary marks the day my dreams were cancelled. My life went from pursuing my lifelong goal of becoming a physician to laying on the ground surrounded by broken dreams. #lifewithavent #followyourdreams #lifesupport
Growing up, I had a relatively normal childhood. When I was three years old, my mom bought me a pretend medical kit. From that moment forward, becoming a doctor became my only mission. Everything in my life would revolve around getting into medical school and becoming a physician. As I passed through high school, I took many science courses and achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average and graduated as valedictorian of my class. I knew if I wanted to get in to medical school, I needed a solid science foundation. In college, I got straight A’s and again graduated as first in my class. I applied to medical school and was overwhelmed with joy when I received my acceptance letter. I was now on my way to fulfilling my dream.
During medical school, I became very sick with severe GI pain. Week after week, I pushed through it. I kept telling myself I would rather die than have to drop out of medical school to seek medical attention. Twelve hours after taking my last final exam, a massive ovarian cyst ruptured, sending me into sepsis with organ failure. Through a divine series of miracles, I was able to get emergency surgery, and God allowed me to live.
Prior to surgery, I was having issues with severe fatigue, muscle pain, muscle spasms and my heart raced when I stood up. I never sought medical treatment because I was assured I was healthy and nothing was wrong with me. However, after having surgery, my health could no longer be ignored.Every time I stood up, I felt as though I was going to pass out. I had a hard time walking because I became very fatigued very quickly. I was short of breath and my muscles ached. I was told by my doctors that I was just recovering from surgery. There was nothing wrong. When school resumed from winter break, I went back to class.
Three months after having surgery, I was again in the midst of my studies when I became severely ill with pneumonia. My health deteriorated even more. Suddenly, I found myself begging doctors for help.I went from physician to physician, but my health challenges were passed off. If a test was abnormal, I was told I faked the result or that the irregular result was nothing to be concerned about. Finally in July 2009, doctor number 86 suspected I had postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome which is abbreviated as POTS. He referred me on to a cardiologist. The cardiologist ordered a tilt table test, and behold, I finally had a diagnosis. I was told POTS was causing all my symptoms. If I drank water, ate salt, wore compression stockings and took a beta blocker which would help lower my heart rate, I would be as good as new. I tried all the recommendations, but my health continued to worsen. I asked my doctor if it was ok to attend medical school in the fall. He said, “Medically, there is no reason you cannot attend.” With that advice, I continued my studies.

I just graduated respiratory therapy school, and watching your videos has helped me gain a new perspective that I could never learn in textbooks. I see that I must perform my duties with utmost compassion and empathy, as well as competency. I cannot believe how many medical professionals you’ve had to go through in order to get some kind of diagnosis. You have already inspired so many people and you will continue to. Because of you, I will always remember to fight and ADVOCATE for my patients❤️

Young lady, NEVER doubt your strength and value! You may not have been able to complete med school (You didn't fail, you just took a medical discharge), you still do what a physician is to do: To teach others, to help others. Galen would be proud of you!
I love that you have voice inflection. I think that is the other thing people worry about, that they will wound like 1980s robots, all mechanical-like.
I can see you've put an awful lot of work into regaining your voice. Take care. And God Bless!

I had the same symptoms as after 1 year of chronic work stress. I had gut issues, hypertension, leg cramps, restless leg, spasms, muscle fatigue, lethargy, breathing episodes and bells Palsy where half my face was paralyzed. Doctors couldn't help. So, I did my own research to save my life. I decided to heal my gut, mitochondria, and nervous system. First, I quit the stressful job and eliminated all stress. I ate an anti-inflammatory diet and supplemented. After 1-2 months, all symptoms were gone except occasional breathing episodes. For some reason, electrolytes would help. It took a few more months of sticking with my self treatments until the breathing episodes went away. Its been 2 years now and im mostly ok. I do get a little fatigue at times but I have past menopause so maybe its related to that but it could be from my past health issue.

I just came up on your channel today. The medical profession NEEDS people like you. I am glad you are educating the public via RUclips, even if you are never able to become an MD.
I know nothing about ventilators. In fact, my impression was that only someone unconscious would need a ventilator. (Quite obviously, my impression was false.)

Thank you for sharing your story and knowledge with all of us out here. I was literally on the blind as I was trying to understand my mothers condition and her permanent use of an artificial ventilator. Very helpful information which I think have saved my moms life as I am guilty of probably puncturing her lungs as I was trying to go deeper during suctions. Now I know thanks to you, and I show her your videos to let her know that she CAN get out of bed if we work together using supervised physical therapy to get her to a point where she can get around and eat normal food. 🙏🏼❤️

I too, have a permanent tracheostomy. And February 27th of every year, changed my life forever. I have tracheobroncomalacia. I had the surgery that was supposed to fix the trachea and the bronchial tube. However if you knew me you wouldn't be surprised that I would fall into the 1 percentile of it being more serious. I have malaria or collapse in my lungs and the upper trachea. It doesn't even have a name for it yet. I am somewhat a lab rat since everything is new for me and the doctors. Thank you for making these videos...i wanted to do something like this because in 2017 there was nothing on RUclips or the internet and i was scared to death. I am on oxygen 24/7 6 liters and sleep with a ventilator only at night or naps.
I wanted to do some videos to put peoples mind at rest that was having one done. Then I thought it still would have been scary. Thank you. I know these will help. Information and knowledge is power. God bless.

Yes! You are and have impacted my life and my daughter’s already! I’ve started doing some research based on your experiences you mention as a child, on how to be more proactive than I have been with my daughter’s mitochondrial disease and in turn my own. I completely understand working toward a career that does not come to fruition. I was first on the path to medical school, but as I got into labs was told that my lack of fine motor coordination would make it impossible. So, since I was taking foreign language, I decided to become a linguist. I spent years in college to become a professor, but now I cannot work. My day is full of coping with health issues non stop. The first question that always comes out of people’s mouths to me is whether I work, or when will I work or why don’t I do something more to work. I’m completely unpredictable day to day though as to what I’m capable of. It does frustrate me that most people around me simply do not understand. However, I feel like I am going to set my purpose to getting my daughter healthier earlier in her life so that perhaps her endurance for latter years will be greater. So, thank you!!!!!

Girl, I literally wish the best for you because although I'm healthy, I had experience with a large ovarian cyst that needed to be removed, and I also had experience with not so severe low bp and dizziness due to anxiety/ vitamin deficiency/ bad diet. I know how hard life can become with these symptoms. I genuinely pray that you'll gain your health back ❤

You are truly an inspiration! 🙏🏽
There's a lot of scope for medical educational content on youtube; a bright mind like you is definitely making an impact for both doctors and chronically ill patients.😇
You could try out making small topic based videos for usmle prep as a change😅
I wish you all d best for your youtube channel!
    Take care😁

Thank you for all your kind words. I would not be suitable to create USMLE prep videos. The USMLE focuses on generalities for many topics. Generalities are often wrong. For example, the USMLE teaches cystic fibrosis is mostly found in people from northern European descent. Reality, cystic fibrosis is HIGHLY prevalent in the Cuban population.
