Hello Friends! This week we are finishing up the day bodice for my Red Victorian ball gown!I had a huge argument with my machine and some buttonholes toward the end, but otherwise, things went pretty ok, and I am very happy with the results!

well done with the day bodice, despite the machine complications. I wouldn't worry about putting your grandmother's spirit into her machine, I have my granddad in one of mine. he bought my most modern machine in 54 when my mum was born. she got it when she left home, and I got it when I left home. he's always there helping out.

The day bodice is so adorable. Someone suggested using a cheap cordless electric razor for removing embroidery and button holes. OMG that was a game changer. Didn't mangle the fabric at all.

I have a couple of very nice modern machines….confession…I only ever use my 1926 machine and a couple from the 60’s and 70’s. They never fail me. I can take them all the way apart, fix, maintain, and cajole. The modern ones often just decide not to. 😂 🌈🌈🦋🦋
I don't have modern machines anymore, for exactly this reason. I've got my 1896, 1901, and 1954 that I use all the time. I hate that modern machines don't come apart, but with my others I can take them down to the bare bones, clean and service them myself, put them all back together, and not have to pay through the nose for someone else to do it, if they even can (I had two serviced by professionals, who basically came back to me and said "sorry, don't know what's wrong, but we're still going to charge you the service fee)! the only modern machines I own is an overlooked, and inonky bought that for convenience sake, and saving time.
Absolute truth. They don’t make em like they used to! The new one does sew like butter, until it doesn’t!
The M7 does have a “manual” button feature. It’s the button hole choice that says MEM next to it. I found this out recently when I was researching optional accessories for mine and looked up the “Buttonhole Transparent Foot”. It looks a lot like the “F- Satin Stitch” so I tried it and it does work. Down sides are you do have to babysit and guide it and it is only the squared off style. Up sides, it is manual, if you do them all in succession it remembers the size for you; asks if you want to do it again, and you can even make button holes larger than your foot can too. Like coat for example.
I know you already finished, so this is moot, but this is info for the future.

Noelle! That looks so dang good. The buttons look like little juicy little berries. The velvet on the lapels is just the perfect change in texture. I joined Craftsy because I got a serger a year and a half ago....and I am not great with it. Tolerable at best to just clean up edges because SewStine said once it's better to have a done-dress then a none-dress and with my Ehlers-Danlos I just needed a simpler way to do all my modern finishing to save my hands for the historical I want to finish the long way. Since I got going with it I have made 3 dresses, 4 shirts, 4 trousers and I am about to start another dress. It can be better and I know my serger can do so many things I have zero understanding of yet. Thanks for the discount because that is indeed in my budget.
Heck yeah for modern machines as mobility aids ^^ I updated my sewing machine to a computerised one so I can control by buttons and it's helped my fatigue so so much. I haven't used the pedal in the 1-2 years I've had it. My overlocker (serger) is standard though and I can feel the way the pedal tires me, but it lowkey stresses me regardless so the pedal at least feigns control while I'm using it.

Just finished the final book in the Rook and Rose series by MA Carrick and it was 🤯 amazing. Incredibly well written, funny, and an intriguing story steeped in politics and class culture instead of the regular sword and hero tropes. Plus a Dread Pirate Roberts figure, amazing costume details, and some hilarious cats. 100% recommend if it's not on your TBR yet!

Sorry to hear about the long COVID. I hope the sewjo stays strong! I've been watching Pie in the Sky on Acorn TV... Nearly retired inspector starts a restaurant but still helps investigate crimes for the police. Not always fast paced but good dry British humor and hijinks ensue. I made a peasant blouse yesterday. And am knitting a twi'lek hat and a sweater for a friend... Or a shawl, I haven't decided 😊

I just inherited a bunch of my Grandma's old crafting items and it both gives me inspiration to craft and also makes me feel not alone in it, like she is there with me. I am sure she hangs out with you and lends you a hand when you need your Grandma. ❤
I am working on reading through the 5th edition DnD rule books. Have not played in years but going to start a campaign and want to familiarize myself with what has changed.

I love this jacket so much! To be honest, I hate button holes. I have a button holer foot, but I haven’t been able to figure it out. I cheat with either toggle buttons and loops or snaps with fake buttons sewn over them. 😁Or bribe a friend. Bribing generally works.

My Grandma helps me with cooking. She was a great cook who could just throw things in a pot and make the best-tasting food. I am working on the neverending dance costume lists for my two dancers, as well as some vintage children's patterns. So far I have made one from the 1960's, one from the 1970's and a more "modern" one from the 1990's, all using thrifted or donated fabrics and trims from my own stash. Next for me is a high-low dress for my daughter's open mic night performance in two weeks.

I'm going to start a simple knit dress that is mostly rayon. It's black with some red roses printed on it. Something that can be dressed up and down.
Made a black satin evening cape for my 4 yr old grandson. He loves it and wears it along with vampire fangs everywhere.

The bodice is quite lovely! I'm glad your grandmother's machine could fix the curse of the button holes. The only thing I could add to the discussion of the curse, which might have been brought up, is cleaning, but I'm sure you tried that. Regardless, the bodice is lovely on you.
I'm rewatching the Dead Boy Detectives (for the 4th time) and still loving it. I made a vintage style advert for the titular characters, but I''m going to make one for another character I adore. It's a comfort watch for me.
I'm listening to Freaky Signs, which is the 5th omnibus of the Mystic Caravan Mysteries series. Tomorrow begins my county's summer reading challenge that I'll be participating in and I'm excited for. I have a lot of books planned for the summer :)
I had carpal tunnel release surgery today, but i was told I could use my fingers, so typing is allowed, just not wrist stuff, Soon, hopefully, I'll get back to making things and I'm very excited for that.

It is SOOOO GOOOD to hear your voice again. I missed you. I was so pleasantly surprised to find part 2, today! I hate it when a machine decides to "Not With It." Been there a couple of times. Does it work, else wise? Happy you could channel your grandma.
I, on the other hand, now have two broken feet, and I can't sew. This, of course, makes me desperate to sew. I'm trying to redirect that energy into writing something (anything,) and into catching up on the stack of magazines I haven't had time to go through. Musically, I'm looping through 4 songs: Laufey -- I Wish You Love, and Promise, The Killers -- Human, and Ladyfingers but it's raining and you are in a province (a RUclips video.)
I've also been going through every vintage\antique skirt video I can find, tracking down patterns that I may or may not have, and thinking "why can't you be like this when I CAN sew?!"

Hope you have an awesome trip to LA with your friend. I'm currently making an edwardian skirt using a pattern from the Fashion Archeologist. It's pretty fun. Every seam is only top stitched, so fitting and adjusting the size is super easy by just moving the top pieces and darts. You can literally fit it as you make it, so you don't really need to make a mock up. I love the final bodice! The hat is a perfect addition too!!

That is what I love about very early medieval, no buttonholes! Many of my skirts close with a safety pin because they are supposed to have buttons .
I have been making the new garden. That means moving a mountain of dirt into raised beds. I hired a young guy to do this but he got a real job so now I am doing some of it. I can manage 3 wheelbarrows a day if I am careful and don't try to lift twist and kick something heavy at the same time. Old backs are a pain in many ways. Today it rained when I got home from lunch in the city with the kids so I am just knitting.

I have a very old Singer sewing machine, 1930s. I have to make buttonholes by hand, or I'll put on snaps and fake it!!! 😅

LOL, when you started talking about the Craftsy membership, I actually said: "Well, damn." as I had already singed-up. [Ah, well. Craftsy ISN'T that expensive, so it's still a good deal if you miss Noelle's membership bonus.] And can I JUST say I am sending you SERIOUS 'you are my hero' vibes for having seam-ripped out all those button holes!! Last week, I decided to take in the inseam and crotch of my EMS 'tactical' cargo pants. (I buy the men's as the women's pants are low-riders for some reason, but that means the crotch is dropped on my pants and that is super uncomfortable.) Little did I know that the TRIPLE-sewn french seams on these pants are done with such a short stitch-length that it would have taken me days to do this in-between my shifts. I noped out of that in a hurry. Some professional seamstress is going to get some cash very soon, lol. So I could, to some degree, imagine how much you suffered through that process. Ugh!!!

I spent a wonderful few days binging 3 or so seasons of tower 4. Suspense would be the genre it is excellentwith s syrong following. The trailer gives an accurate vibe. You should come to LA more often. I hope that you get to eat HomeState. Sorry about the button holes. That ALWAYS happens to me. Currently working on a Regency day dress which is made from the thinnest black cotton lawn and has been the biggest pain in the butt. It does not want to gather at all. Thread keeps getting caught on the fabric. Grandma's are amazing! One of mine had a Parking Angel, so whenever anyone in the family needs help parking, we talk to Grams and her Parking Angel and get RockStar parking. The bodice/jacket looks awesome! Congrats! You should watch Dead Boy Detectives if you haven't. I need to start watching season 2 of Interview with a Vampire. Have to finish revising the pilot episode of my procedural family drama with ghosts to get it submitted by tomorrow. To the end.

Such and incredible jacket!!!!!! I do the same with buttonhole sequence of sewing!!! I also detach my foot and use the start/stop button. A couple of things that I do is slow down the speed of my machine and also gently hold the back of that funny buttonhole foot up so that there is no drag at all and doesn't touch the fabric behind the foot. However, your machine seems incredibly complex given all the settings that you are able to adjust.
I was taught by my nana to sew and can completely jive with calling on her to aid in getting a garment made xxxxxxxxxxxx

This came out great!!! I'm working on Wearing History's Smooth Sailing blouse. Then moving over to making a friend two 18th C jackets. Currently reading a contemporary romance as I always do. LOL I'm rewatching Foyle's War on Acorn. REALLY GOOD. Anddd I have too many knitting projects casted on that are languishing because I'm doing other things. LOL Hope you are doing well! Annndd I would not have talked you down on the fabric. I currently have my eye on more of the fabric I used for my new 18th C Gown because I want to make a full bottom petticoat and an Amalia jacket. I am listening to the first season of critical role again...from a specific point though, because the next season of Legend of Vox Machina is in the process of being made and I wanted to freshen up my memory of what is coming up next. That way I don't stress over the episodes when there's a cliff hanger like always. I know, I'm weird that way. 🤷🏽♂️😂🤣

Bernina! I have one from 1972 and one from early 1990s, and both have garbage lighting. But I still love them...
THEY TOTALLY HAVE GARBAGE LIGHTING!!! I’m considering getting one of those attachable led strip lights…

Bodice looks great. I have had similar issues with buttonholes, practice ones are perfect, then on the item disaster. Last time I ended up using the half done ones as a template for hand sewing the buttonhole as any attempt at unpicking left very visible marks. Once I resorted to just sewing a button on where the buttonhole would be as it was slightly hidden and the other buttonholes had worked okay.

Omg that’s amazing! I’m having the same problems with a different machine. I cleaned it, changed the needle and completely rethreaded it. I don’t think it’s time to oil it but that’s my next step

Bodice looks amazing!! 😍 I could not for the life of me get the vest to work - I sewed and picked out and adjusted and readjusted over and over and finally gave up. I need a dress form for this project so I'm going to try bootstrap. Bonus if I can use it corseted and uncorseted.

I'm not doing much of anything because I'm supposed to be packing to move. UGH! And to think when I was a young whippersnapper I loved... erm... liked moving. The packing I've always hated, but then doesn't everybody? I mostly hate it because I can remember what was packed in which box despite trying to label everything.
Currently I'm reading/listening to all the Mercedes Lackey books in her Heralds of Valdemar series. She's finally written the stories of the founding of Valdemar: Beyond, Into the West, and Valdemar. It's interesting listening to the changes in her writing from the older books to the newest all jumbled together.

Heh, glad I'm not the only one who slaps readers on over distance lenses :P Age, it's a thing.
One of my sewing machines keeps snapping the thread if I do more than four layers. The other electric one I like is doing much the same as your fancy machine and missing catching the bobbin thread at frequent random intervals. And I can't justify the cost to get them in to the shop, so I'm going to have to haul out the Singer from Hell from its Closet of Shame and make it do the bathing suits project. Its favourite trick is to spit the thread out of its tensioner and make terrycloth on the bottom. This looks fantastic! And successful buttonholes! My machine is also currently giving me trouble. No matter what settings I mess with or needles or feet I change. The top thread tension is just too tight and won’t adjust. So frustrating. But I’m glad you were able to figure out the buttonholes!

My Singer does this nonsense with button holes. I dread making them. For my Singer I have an attachment that clips on my button hole foot that can help. It's called an underplate.

I had a similar issue with buttonholes with my janome (11K) when I was making a double breasted dress with 12 buttons and ended up getting out my (It's not heavy, it's my) Brother buzzbox machine. I recently inherited my sister's Bernina 830 and look forward to trying it out to make buttonholes one day.

I haven't been feeling great so now I'm trying to get caught up with house work and regularly should have been scheduled maintenance! All wondering how to retrain everyone to see the apparently invisible dishwasher!

Your experience with the automatic buttoholer is why I never use mine anymore! Hand worked all the way. Glad it all worked out tho.

I would have screamed, cried, called my mother and then probably asked my partner to make the buttonholes because he has sewn like a thousand buttonholes by now. 😅

My automatic buttonhole foot does the same stupid thing, only properly stitching one long side. I'm still trying to figure out a solution but for now I'm hand sewing them. I have the same experience with sleeves. sigh
