We wore a respirator because it stinks , we did it outside and you wear gloves when you scrub it. If you are worried about it definitely don’t use this technique.
I stripped a piano using Extra Strength Easy Off Oven cleaner. Worked at it off & on for 3 days. Didn’t take long. Just have lots of paper towel & good rubber gloves! It worked fantastic!
I cleaned houses for 30 years and I've tried every cleaning product. Nothing is as good as the easy off-brand, well worth the money. It may have done it in one coat
Have wondered if this would work, stripping with oven cleaner. Thanks so much for this video. I trust you guys to be honest with us and appreciate you trying this technique! Love the results with your oil wax!
I was super nervous about the shower!!! But I loved how the table turned out. Thank you for trying this out for us. I hate the goopiness of stripper so I might actually try this now that I've seen it done. Also, thank you for adding in the amount of coats you did, the wait time in between coats, and all the ways you tried to remove the old yuck(the brushes and the wool pad) All of those tips do matter to me when I'm watching DIY videos. They definitely save me from having to just "try them out and see what happens" myself. 😂
Thanks for another great DIY class ... have heard of using the oven cleaner& appreciate seeing it done step by step -- showing the application of the oil wax & the best timing to rub it off .. saves a maybe oops ! Very nice outcome !
It looks awesome. I saw another RUclipsr do this and she said that when she left the oven cleaner on longer it took less coats and time to get the old finish off. I have an old dresser I'm going to try this on next summer.
It was nice to see your take on this viral hack thank you for sharing. I let my curiosity get the best of me last month and did an oven cleaner video as well. I think I prefer paint stripper better
Hi Leslie !! Oh my over 400 views and only 43 LIKES 🤷♀️. I give likes to ALL videos I watch even when I’m not subscribed…. People right ? Or maybe they don’t understand You Tube…🥴
WOW.. the white oil wax really gives the wood a nice old wood look ! I’m surprised at the Oven Cleaner. So glad you guys tried it out for us ! I have been wondering if it really works…YUP it does! But oh the smell of over cleaner 😬. I’ve never used a stripper on wood before , so don’t know which one smells the worse! LOL!! Thanks for sharing 😁
Thanks for doing this! I have seen some others do this treatment as well, I was hoping you two would give it a go! The SP White Oil wax is perfect for this.
I thought you had to neutralize the oven clean with a vinegar wash after cleaning it or the oven cleaner would be down in the grain and keep eating away at your wood?? Anyone know if that’s true?
Can you show us your other white oil waxed items, especially if you did more than one coat? Pretty please? Since oven cleaner is toxic, I wonder if this is the better of two “evils” (stripper)? Great video!
@@cynthiafisher9907 Okay I read up on it. They’re poisonous, at least while they’re at their caustic potency. They say after they’ve been used and wiped off, they’re not toxic. Still and all, I don’t like the stuff, but I probably don’t like stripper either.
It took you so long because You are supposed to do fume free and use water which reacts to the chemical that. I also left my piece out in the hot sun in between coats which really helped too
WARNING*** If you use this.. you have to cover the entire area, or it will show up where you sprayed the oven cleaner, and where you didn't. I just tried this on an exterior side of a front entry door, and I had to spray the entire door area so it would look consistent!
That looks easier than strippers..but even outside do we have to wear a respirator?? (Jami..I was freaking out about your beautiful shower tiles!! Lol you're so sweet! ) Thanks for this tip..I must be the only one who hasn't heard of using oven cleaner!
If the agent's health hazards aren't enough of a red flag, the harsh solution might also throw a wrench in wood DIY project before it truly begins. Oven cleaners will most definitely dry out wood, eventually resulting in splits and veneer separation, it's fair to expect a bleaching effect, as well, with oven cleaners. Instead turn to gel strippers that have "less splash, better accumulation, and are fairly inexpensive when working on any wooden pieces.
You have to use real easy off oven cleaner not off brand just saying I did this technique in the '70s and pulled off about 6 or 7 Layers of old paint easily and I didn't wipe anything back I rinse it off with a water hose
Meh ... Seems like much ado about nothing. Five coats?!? I've never had to use more than two coats of any stripper even with 3-4 layers of paint. Thanks for showing this latest fad. As much as I hate the whole messy process, I'll stick with regular strippers. 🤷🏻♀️
@@kayeyeager8006 hi Kaye! Sorry for the delayed response. I just saw this! I had stockpiled some of the old formula Citristrip that I'm still using. That works well for me - you just have to put a decent layer on and cover it with plastic so it stays wet while it's working. Klean Strip is a good one, too. That's what I used before Citristrip and I'll probably go back to it once I'm all out. I also have some stuff I bought on fb marketplace that is supposed to be really good. I haven't tried it yet but I'll come back and repost when I do if I like it.

once all the varnish is removed, try good old fashioned house hold bleach to lighten the wood and help dilute the dark stain...it is a good hack

I had no clue. Handy , as I usually have oven cleaner to clean my oven in my cleaning supplies.
Bahaha! Love the shower part!
Love how the little table turned out, beautiful

😍😍😍 I need that table! Matches chair I have

If you do any pieces with the oven cleaner we’d love to see how it turns out for you!
It looks awesome. I saw another RUclipsr do this and she said that when she left the oven cleaner on longer it took less coats and time to get the old finish off. I have an old dresser I'm going to try this on next summer.
Turned out really pretty 🤗💕
A very pretty piece of furniture. I saw Katie Scott use oven cleaner b4. Who would have thought.
Oh nice, I didn’t know she had tried it
Definitely going to try this technique! Thank you!
Wow... great to know‼️ Thank you for testing it out for us ❣️

The oven cleaner smells better but I feel like we’re splitting hairs lol
For sure do it outside and wear a respirator
Very cool
Actually really liked how this turned out. Like the colour a lot!❤️
Thanks Tracy!

Thanks Deb! We’ve been wanting to try it out for awhile to see how it worked and I’m glad we did
Good one guys 👍🤗
Great idea 💡
I thought you had to neutralize the oven clean with a vinegar wash after cleaning it or the oven cleaner would be down in the grain and keep eating away at your wood?? Anyone know if that’s true?
I leave the oven cleaner on for over an hour it definitely gets down a bit deeper but I also put the spray on a bit thicker
Good to know. Ours was mostly drying out after about 20 minutes
@@JamiRayVintage
Or you could also cover with Plastic wrap to help stop it drying out so you could leave it on longer
Will e z off take Breewax off like it does paint and varnish?
Can you show us your other white oil waxed items, especially if you did more than one coat? Pretty please?

Great video!
It’s hard to say, strippers are tough in general.
Wear a respirator and do it outside.
Oven cleaner isn’t toxic, it’s just caustic. It’s lye, which is used to make soap sometimes.
@@cynthiafisher9907 Okay I read up on it. They’re poisonous, at least while they’re at their caustic potency. They say after they’ve been used and wiped off, they’re not toxic.

Did the lye burn your feet, Zeb? This was interesting, but I’d probably prefer stripper. Thanks for sharing the process!
No it was rinsed off before he brought it in. He was really just getting all the loose stain off.
It looks pretty. Did it retain any of the oven cleaner smell? Did the wax seal the smell in? Thanks!
It now just smells like oil wax
I wish you would have taped down the center and done a comparison with one ofthe "natural" strippers. Maybe next time.
It took you so long because You are supposed to do fume free and use water which reacts to the chemical that. I also left my piece out in the hot sun in between coats which really helped too
I think if you did it in warmer weather it would work better
I think that looks like a whole lot more work than using a regular paint stripper - what is supposed to be the benefit ? Cheaper ?.
For me it wasn’t goopy like paint stripper and it wiped off really easy. We got more off using the brillo pad
@@JamiRayVintage Thanks for the answer ! 🥰
😍
Agree with the person below. A good stripper will easily do it in two applications. And oven cleaner is horribly toxic, just as toxic.

What strippers have you used that git that deep on multiple layers? I have a piece that I'm seriously considering putting in the wood pile.

That is a lot of work and a lot of toxic fumes .
Wear a MASK!
